How To Drive It Like A Pro: Arm Depth

  • How deep the arms get in the backswing is a good indicator of how well you can manage to play on plane in the downswing. But it comes with a caveat...
    When you get your arms deep, and how you get them deep makes all the difference. Do it too early, and you're in trouble. Sacrifice one key element for depth, and you're in trouble.
    In this video, we'll show you the proper "when" and how to use that key element to get your downswing started on the right path!

    Great video. After watching this video, I started to practice swinging my arms down to get them from being pinned on my chest. The results were amazing. I discovered the only way I could do this was to keep my arms (and chest muscles) relaxed as I used to tighten them up which locked my arms against my chest and really slowed my arm speed down. This has taken away the "hit" from the top out of my downswing. I'm now hitting the ball longer and straighter... having MORE FUN!!!! Thanks

      Love that awareness, Rich! You just touched on one of the biggest "secrets" in the swing. Because of the traditional down the line camera angle, it looks like every good golfer is throwing their left arm across their chest - THAT IS NOT HAPPENING, and you just learned why💪👏

    That's a good one. Didn't realize the arm position at swing top. Just did some dry swings in front of mirror and high top really makes it easier to come down shallow. Gonna work in this at range tomorrow. Thanks guys

    Love this stuff, completely different angle from other teaching stuff. I've had too deep hands which causes inside and across the line. This really does get to the root of that. Not being pinned at the top also helps to stop the need of finding that 'end of swing' position which can cause overswinging and then getting steep on the way down.

    Great video and clarifies the ‘arms in front’ issue. Is there any correlation with the speed of the shoulder turn in the downswing with clubhead speed I.e. a fast shoulder turn creates a faster clubhead speed? The pros appear to have a slow controlled downswing shoulder turn that creates a high club head speed/longer distance? Keep up the great work.

    The backswing model shown was a very steep backswing. I’m working with an arm swing matching shoulder plane as the steepest point to feel more connected.

    Great video. Would this concept change any for iron shots? Also, when you guys talk about keeping the lead shoulder down longer with iron shots, would that concept also apply to the driver? And should the forearm rotation be similar between iron and driver. Shaun has a video on his channel from 2016 about differences between iron and driver. But I am looking for more nuanced differences in the takeaway and downswing that what he has in that video. Thanks!

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  6 років тому

      Thanks for watching, Gojeh. Yes on the first 2 questions. Similar but not exactly the same forearm rotation. Driver swing is typically a bigger move with more range of motion.

    You guys are great! I would only question the depth of your pro sampling.....how many pros do you look at before you select a sample for the demonstration?
    Again....love your analysis.
    Fred Couples is an example of a pro that gets the club UP quickly....to your point.
    Question: Isnt the left arm "levered" off the chest? Does not the torso turn fling the left arm in a leveraged connected fashion giving it speed? IT may then 'regain' the abduction angle prior to impact as the torso slows and the lead arm propels into the ball?

    Very informative as always. My main struggle when trying to preserve some angle between chest and left arm rather than 'pinning it' is feeling very steep and outside. I end up chopping down and across and hitting really weak, wide push slices with the driver (I hit draws with my normal swing). Anything I might be getting wrong when trying to implement this swing thought?

    So the body is almost rotating back and through independently from the arms? The arms need to operate on their own? The only thing that gets “passed” to the arms is speed?

    To connect this to your video about over rotation of the hips by Ams in the backswing (and then needing a ton of rotation in the quarter-second downswing to get 25-30* open on the downswing), wouldn’t someone need tremendous thoracic flexibility to get the club over the heels and not need to massively open the hips in the backswing?

    The animation shows very differently, the left arm is pinned across the chest and the hands appear to the right of the right shoulder. The angle you show at 5:59 is between the right shoulder and left arm. The shoulders can move quiet a bit in relation to the chest. Already at the start I see a lateral shift of the hands in relation to the chest.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  6 років тому

      That's why we show the numbers. The left arm is not pinned in the data or graphics, and the angle shown is between the upper left arm and spine. We aren't comparing hands to right shoulder.

      Depth from this DTL view is a factor of rotation. The camera does not move with the shoulder turn so you cannot see where the hands are relative to the shoulder. We also don’t say the “hands never move past the shoulder.” We use the lead wrist/watch for reference.

    Can I assume that despite the fact this model looks notjing like any player on tour - the actual data GEARS spits out is what's important - not the rendering of the player model?

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  4 роки тому

      The most common thing we hear the tour guys say when we're capturing their swing is "Yep, that's my swing." It's not photo realistic for sure, but the underlying movements are represented fairly well (except for maybe a few waist sizes lol). We've been told that to get the animation to match the quality of the data (think video game realistic) would be several a several million dollar investment. We are taking donations😊

    Every single person golfer has a different backswing yet knows how to end up at the ball. That proves that there is no correct way to take the club back. Just whatever it takes to end up at a good impact position. From my research most people get the weight shift wrong. There is no weight shift. Just a pressure shift. Just feel like you're leaning towards your target during the backswing and away from your target at impact and although it feels weird this will fix a lot of contact issues. Like a baseball pitcher who actually is leaning forward on their way back.
