TOO MUCH HAND DEPTH (TRY THIS!)

- In this video I will talk about the biggest issue I see with players who tend to swing too many degrees on a in to out path. This is something that is not talked about enough for certain players!

Hands down, this guy is one of the best tutors on youtube for golf. His videos has helped me alot. Keep up the great content 👏
This is the first time I've ever heard this. This makes so much sense.
Jonathan, I’ve been bouncing around YT instructions for a while. I’ve decided to concentrate my efforts on improving my swing with your instructions. It is straight forward and to the point. Thanks for the great information!
The visualization of your arm matching the alignment stick on the ground halfway up is genius. Been looking for a feel to help my backswing. thanks!
I almost bought a membership to performance golf and stumbled upon JKM. WOW...he is so clear and on target with his instructions. Thank you!
Struggled with this on and off for years. FINALLY, you've explained it in a way that makes sense. HUGE HELP thank you!!!
Well done young man! Great check points and your reasoning and explanations make sense. I’m 71 yrs old now and lost a lot of my flexibility and length. I was a 7 handicap in my youth and could have been better, had I just been an average putter. Now I’m a 16 handicap. Have really been struggling with my irons the last 3-4 years. I truly believe this video you made will help me strike the ball cleaner! Many thanks!
This is totally me!! The best video I found so far on explaining the flat backswing addressing my issue)! Thank you so much Jon!!
Jonathan's videos are so helpful! He explains the different elements of a golf swing in a clear and concise way that allows you to easily follow along, visualize it, and put it in to your practice. Best instructor on UA-cam that I have seen! Thanks Jonathan!
Thanks Jonathan you just helped me understand why I’ve being either pushing my shots or doing crazy pulls. Very well explained. Again.
Another gem 💎 for beginner series, thank for the great video, I have been overloading my entire life. 😅
thank you , very helpful. The ' split hands drill " has also helped me stop wrapping the lead arm around the chest.
Very informative ~ bent trail arm at the top is actually caused by overloading the lead arm. So true and so helpful, thank you.
Great tip!! This is exactly my issue. Overly flat backswing with driver club path usually around 6° in to out. Had a lesson two days ago and my instructor is working on getting me between 2-3° in to out so I can still easily hit my draw, but eliminating my occasional low, screaming hooks. Hands above trail heel is an excellent visual check! This plays right into my most recent lesson! Thanks!
7:46 This is the video I’ve been looking for. This just explained my swing and
Why I over hook. Great job
Exactly what I do at the moment. Thank your so much for bringing that to my mind.
Also loving the visual identifiers you are pointing out. This way I can relate to some video footage of my own swings much easier.
You are my number one teacher now! 🙌
It's amazing how youtube is able to find videos that I need even with this video being over a year old. My son has this issue and I'm guessing a lot of junior golfers might have this because most don't have any meat on their chest. Their lead arm comes way across their chest just because there is more room to do so. My son has a severe 10 degree in to out club path. This just might be the fix!
I believe I'm coming way too much from the inside. Next time at the range I'm going to practice this golf drill. Thanks, loved your video.
This one definitely rang true for me. Great video, this really simplified thing for me. Thanks
thankyou jonathan, this is an essential component to keep
an eye on from now on 👍
Thank you for the breakdown. That small detail of having the butt of the club on or just a little off the right heel is a perfect check point. As a player that has a lot of flexibility with my hip turn, my swing tends to maximize its hip rotation but also takes the swing off its natural path, that check point will manage the rotation and keep the end point of my back swing consistent. Can you add another segment for transition from end of the top of the swing to downswing? What is the best trigger to initiate the downswing?
Was watching this tutorial today and can't wait to get out to the range to try this out, was watching some of my own video lips and my arms are definitely guilty of this, lesdsrm pretty much horizontal to the ground. Have been working on getting rid of a nasty slice but I think that might have caused me to overcompensate and exaggerate the inside path. Excellent video, subscribed.
Big thanks for all of your advice in the videos.ill definitely try this because I over draw/ hook my irons.
So that is what I have been doing
I do like the way you explain things😊
This makes a lot of sense! Will try this drill out next time out. Great video!
so glad to see you posting videos again!!! Please keep them coming!
Have this same issue and I've been working hard on correcting it (have around a 7-10 degree in to out swing with irons). A lot of it comes from an inside take-away, the natural transition is to take the club way back behind me from there. Have had to correct my take away and then get the feeling my trail arm is staying more "in front of my body" rather then getting under/behind me during the backswing - that is what I would suggest to people.
This is 100% my problem, excellent video JKM!
I think this is exactly what’s been going wrong with my irons thanks great video
Thank you Jonathan, amazing video.
Hi Jonathan, how about focusing on the right elbow going vertically upwards?
This is exactly my problem. However, I manage to come in to out because I turn my shoulders early to make contact. In my stack and tilt journey, I`v been think the more the better. The result has been to much of everything. Im still struggling with too much tilt :-).
I’m guilty of this. Thanks for the tip
Wow this is exactly my issue. Thank you!
Are there any other drills for this common problem? Would love to hear it. Thanks for the video :)
This is exactly my problem. I wish I had watched this first... I started practising hitting down as I first saw your channel. Because I have been pushing my lead arm so much, after two weeks of hitting down practice my left shoulder really hurts (too much pulling at the back of the joint). I have also watched your other video about insufficient body extension during back swing. That was the reason why I didn't have enough room of body rotation, hence I had been pushing to achieve more up swing in the past year, hitting the ground and hooking all the time. Thanks for all the great videos I wish I had carefully watch all of them earlier, but it's been too late. Hope to get some face to face lessons with you next time I visit Singapore. Any plan to be in Hong Kong?
I am organising a clinic in Hong Kong from July 21-25 ! send me an email if you are interested in the details. jkimmossgolf@gmail.com
púh right or hook = exactly my problems, thanks so much
this has been my problem for years ever since I tried to copy sergio's swing or pretend to shallow out the club. I always loop my arms way inside and crashed into my body.
I appreciate this tip but I have two problems.
1) I can do this but during the transition my arm just goes across and my left elbow flares out (looks like an overswing).
2) Is if I do it really slow the club feels so far in front of me that I shank it.
This game is so hard haha.
I like this video but do you have a drill to reduce too much hand depth?
Needed this!!! Thanks JKM 🙌
More course vlogs too 😁👍
I have this problem, but only with my driver... same type of things to work on? Or does it differ with the driver?
Update, this kind of helps with the driver
Great vid thanks. Hugely helpful as I definitely know I do this to some degree (whereas most vids I couldn't tell you if that's a fault of mine). I swing right handed although I'm very left hand dominant, so my left arm wants to load to provide all the power. So I usually inadvertently then overcorrect this error as soon as I start my downswing and my miss is low and left (by somehow even from this low starting position coming over the top)
It's like you just saw my swing. This is my big fault and I have worked at it. However, when I get into the better position, I hit nothing but pulls or pull draws as I my hands and club feel so "out" and near the ball line. From this new and alien position, what is the new matchup I need for the downswing? I haven't seen any video on this fault before, great topic thanks!
Great video.....This is me but my hands are very low.
👍🏻great content!
Thank you so much!
Jonathan. should the right arm also be parallel with the alignment stick in the follow through?
i think this is gonna help because i have this problem, thnx.
Like everyone who has already commented, I think you have precisely addressed my main fault. I am going to try a better posture in the setup to prevent this from happening.
Excessive lead arm adduction is typically caused by an arm-sy swing and a failure to lift the arms and rotate the thorax simultaneously.
I would day the opposite. Army swing tends not to turn at all.
Its due to poor synchronisation.
I have this problem so thanks for your video! I also come way across the line at the top of my backswing. Will this help with that as well?
Thanks Jonathan, this is my biggest problem, but rather than come from the inside, I reroute over the top. All In all, I make it work (6.3 index), but it’s definitely holding me back from getting any better. My biggest problem is when I try to drill to keep the arm along the line of the alignment stick, I tend to feel totally disconnected (almost like there is a huge gap between my bicep and chest). That feels weak and wrong. Ive seen a ton of pros, and none have helped me correct it. Are you up for the challenge? Happy to try your online lessons out. What do you think?
I never back down from a challenge haha 👍
I wonder if posture, or badly angle, in the stance may be too upright.
This is my issue. Too much depth caused by flat shoulder turn, not enough tilt, and hands too inside. Then I straighten up and early extend, but still come down and from the inside, after losing my lag. Blocks, hooks, and low point control suffer. I had too much knee flex at set up that was promoting depth.
I just started working on fixing my set up and takeaway.
Did you get this fixed? How?
Brilliant , thank you Jonathan, this combined with the chicken wing video, have set me on the correct swing path .. many thanks ..
This hardest training drills 🫣 been practicing bad habits for many years overloading because lack self confidence .
Congrats on the new golf simulator
Thanx. Makes sense 👍
Great video, have you tried a laser pointer aid on the butt of the club to track swing points? Any thoughts ?
I have never used it but you can use an alignment stick as well. It can help for sure
Could this also result in a shank from getting stuck? If so would love some tips
Probably why I sometimes block it right.
I've been struggling with a very high attack angle (~8 degrees on 7 iron), causing my ball to start low and spin high (sort of a stinger shot). Which makes it very difficult to hit a driver, is there any solution to this? Thanks Jonathan
try and keep your head looking at the back of the ball as you hit it. This will prevent you from coming in too steep. And move the ball up to your front heel. Try and finish with that Tour-like pose (slight side bend)
@@method341 Thanks for the tip, been trying to do that. The thing is I hit my 3wood best which has a counterbalanced shaft where the driver just feels extremely heavy and behind the hands at impact. (3wood = D0-D1 Swing weight | Driver = D4-D5) I'm thinking it might be a gear related issue. Thoughts?
Can this come from keeping right arm straight and bending it late? The hands too deep I mean
I lost my swing badly over the last 6 months or so of intermittent fall/winter play. Just beginning to get it back on track. However, I'm lacking power somehow. If I hit a good shot with, say, an 8 iron it makes good contact, sounds crisp and great, takes off nice and high but I struggle to get to 120 yards. With an 8! I'm 45 years old, in good shape, lift weights regularly so I'm fairly strong. I know it's difficult/impossible to diagnose without seeing my swing but wondering if there's any "obvious" ideas out there, if anyone else has had this problem. All my shots coming up way short even if I make great contact.
For someone who fight an out to in swing for years, this looks like a happy problem 😄
for a right-handed golfer, at the top of your backswing...imagine your left hand has to grab something out of your right pocket.
Feel like your hands are moving straight down to touch your right pocket.
let me know if that helps fight against some of your out to in path!
Doing this and making sure I don't let my right shoulder sneak forwards has helped for me.
@@ricy802 Let me try that on the range!
Let’s go JKM!
This fixes a lot of problems like
What is intel path?🙏
This video seems slightly inconsistent with the half swing video. In that one, it is recommended that the hands are over the back pocket at the halfway back point and the left arm slightly inside parallel whereas in this one, the hands are recommended to be in front of the chest and the left arm more parallel. Any reason for this difference Jonathan?
the topic of the video is different. This video has to do with TOO MUCH depth so the feels and things described are specific to this issue
Will it be the same swing with all the long clubs as well?
Yes
when my take away is too inside and hands get deep, I come over the top. Why?
Maybe getting too extended or over stacked
This is totally me.
That link to your golf academy doesnt work.
New site coming soon
To solve this problem, the arm and shoulder must move in sync
I do this this and I just end up hitting massive slices
Ensure the club face is not too open. This video just goes over a specific issue and not necessarily will cure all your issues
I always like your video’s I found this one confusing
Dino too much
Please get a new mic
This is not suitable for keeping the clo under the right shoulder of a flatter swing . Am not in favour of lifting the club above right shoulder . Bad video
Am ready to unsubscribe
Imagine someone telling Ben hogan, Sam Snead, Bobby Jones that their takeaway was too deep.. Golf instruction is trash these days…
Technology is far better than back then..we know every detail about the swing more than ever before. They were great players talented enough to figure things out on their own and neither of those players had too deep of a backswing…
@@JKMGolf Technology has done more for the professional golfer, but not the weekend warrior. Telling guys who may play once or twice a month that their backswing is too deep is detrimental to the natural swing most golfer possess. Everyday golfer would fair far better swinging like the old timers rather than using infinite amounts of technology to attempt to swing like a pro.
@@Lyfeastrey Technology is not there just to make someone become a pro…it reveals the truth as to what is really happening and makes things clear instead of having to guess. This helps pros and amateur golfers, weekend golfers and beginners get to the actual issue instead of beating around the bush. The technology now has made things more transparent than ever before which helps everyone..The video I made is for golfers with specific issues..I never said ALLLL golfers have too deep of a backswing..I said that if you have identified that you are facing these issues then here is a solution.
Another factor is too flat a shoulder plane at the top. Too much hand depth can be lessened somewhat by having a steeper shoulder plane on backswing?
