Absolutely fabulous! I struggled with the exact same concepts as your amateur and came to the same conclusion that the first move in my mind had to be pulling my hands down or as you explained accelerating my hands down. With many golfers, I tend to constantly question my swing dynamics because I don't understand the "why". This video really helped me understand the physics behind my feeling and result. I can't wait to play tomorrow with a renewed confidence in this move as I am also a single handicapper and really want to get to the next level. The video is great but doesn't really show you how to do this. What did you do in terms of swing thought to decrease the angle as the video mentions? I'm trying to figure out what I need to be thinking of at the start of the downswing. Thanks!
This kind of clear scientific analysis is exactly what I have needed to make some much needed improvements. I went out and immediately tested your recommendations and saw improvement. Hi, love what guys do. Anyway, how should we increase the hand speed? Should we pulled it from the top? How is it triggered? Should we use our left hand and pull it down? Appreciate your feedback as im trying to work on this in my game. Tx
Amazing vid and info.. just a tip for anyone trying to put this into practice... if you keep your right elbow/tricep tucked into the right side of your torso on the down swing, like the pro at 6:20, it creates the natural delay they're speaking of which will let you unload your wrists better, ramping up club head speed. It also promotes the inside out swing path even if youre hitting a fade. You can certainly over do it and start spraying shots, but a little dialing in will have you launching scuds as long as you flush it or something close to flush.
John, are you saying trail elbow leading more helps? That stull leaves open the question of how to accelerate hands from the top without jumping the plane or clubhead throwaway.
@@joshydep84 they can, if I dont hit the range at least once a week it can be hard to get the timing right. However, keeping my backswing slow and then the follow thru at about 75% does wonders until I’m ready to ratchet it up. And sometimes I don’t and usually score better lol.

Was the increase in hand speed due mainly to the down cock action? If so it appears to go against traditional advice to avoid early casting. Grateful for clarification.
Useful video thank you. One question: what makes the hands accelerate from the top?, Looking at McIlroy, for example, his hands remain passive at the top of th b/scand don’t stsrt down until his lower body has moved noticeably.
Would be great to see a down the line of all of your gear avatars showing us how the hands move sooner, quicker, and then the proper position/direction!
Thank you for answering, but for me "sooner", "faster" and in the "right direction" are changes which can be applied in every mouvement, every sport and more generally everywhere 😕 I don’t want to be boring but, for the first time, I don’t really understand what you’re talking about 😎
@@shogoonp.bechler4601 The "sooner" was him no longer trying to "leave the hands up and turn first." The "faster" was the intent of adding speed to the grip end rather than just being passive. The "right direction" was the hand path moving downward rather than out. Make more sense?
Just another Great video from you Guys. This is showing scientifically and without question what is 'actually' happening. How many coaches out there are teaching concepts which either they don't fully understand and therefore can't communicate properly or are teaching the 'feels' they have which are just that, 'feels' and isn't what is actually happening? When I've hit the ball best, the power has been just 'effortless' and has often left me puzzled as to what happened and why I've found it difficult to repeat consistently. This video should hopefully help me a lot, because who doesn't want more clubhead speed. Thanks Mike, Shaun.
I was always taught to believe that you accelerate your swing through impact and beyond; however, your video suggests that instead one should reach maximum hand speed much earlier in the downswing. Perhaps this the difference, and resulting confusion(?), between thinking about hand/arm vs. clubhead speed. Would appreciate hearing some additional insights on this concept.
I agree this insight is confusing to me now.. sort of antithetical to everything I try to focus on. "don't swing from the top" "accelerate through the ball", it's as if I've stepped into an alternate universe lol. I seem to have more success by letting my hands "fall" naturally from the top, not crank my hands down as fast as I can. I'm really not sure what to do with this new insight, but it's interesting.
Great vid, again! But how does one go about accelerating the hands sooner, without yanking the handle down (and getting narrow)? I guess moving hands more out than down (as shown in still image at start of vid), and bot gripping to tight. Thanks, grtz from the Netherlands.
I was thinking exactly the same thing, and also does that initial speed up of the hands reduce strike accuracy? As opposed to Justin Thomas who looks more for smash factor through vertical extension through impact as opposed to fast hands from the top.
I understand, from the video, what creates more club head speed but I'm not clear about what to physically do to get it. I thought about holding the lag longer but that is clearly not the right thought. So how do I maintain the angles without consciously trying to keep them intact please?
This is the first time I have heard of this and it is amazing how it has transformed my swing, It's really the only swing thought I use right now. Every other teaching pro teaches that you have to start slow and build speed. I have followed that mantra for years. I want to scream. Thanks to this one incredible video now I have too much speed and overshoot the greens. This is easier to fix. All I have to do is club down
It's such a key part of the golf swing to increase clubhead speed. I agree, very well explained and importantly makes logical sense. Good luck with it. Cheers
Was there a specific drill that got his grip moving sooner? Great video. For me having the slow motion animation with the angles seems very helpful at least to have an idea of sequencing and how those changes impact the speed.
Hey guys. Love the video. Love the content you put out. Appreciate the time and passion. Thank you! Im liking the concept/idea/intent of getting the grip moving “sooner, faster, and moving in the right direction.” If you don’t mind. Could you clarify the part about moving the grip in the right direction? Thanks again and happy new year.
The video analysis shows the Am’s hands coming “out” of plane when his body rotates too fast relative to his arms/hands trying to remain passive (presumably as he was instructed). This clearly illustrates one of the causes of classic “over-the-top/casting” motion.
Thanks guys! Incredible details on maximizing the hand speed EARLY to provide sufficient runway to accelerate the club head to reach maximum speed at impact. Also interesting is demystifying the myth of "holding on to lag", which has been plaguing the golf community for the past 30 years and hindering club golfers' ability to swing faster.
What a visual proof of what’s happening in the downswing. That angle filled in with the color reminds me of using the coat hanger drill to help with the release into impact, it looks so easy, as well as Phil Mickelsons analysis of release. Thanks!
Thanks for the advice. Tried it out and average club head speed increased from 104mph to 110mph. 👍Due to UK lockdown I was hitting to a net; hope it’s going straight 😀
This reminds me a lot when Tiger and Butch Harmon was on golf channel. During his lesson, Tiger said one thing that changed the way I played. Tiger said “feel like his hand is winning the race” as tiger tried to avoid the old “o’lay” move. Took me a log time to understand what he was trying to do, but over time it made me a better ball striker. The down side was it turn my fade into a 3 yard draw. This video brought back memories. But a very good video. Took 6-8 months to undo that early hip rotation that made my swing stuck and/or early release.
You cover "what" needs to be done- hands moving faster earlier. But I don't quite understand "how" to do it. Does the thought of hand dropping before the hips help? THANKS-
Love the video guys. I'm addicted to data driven golf swing analysis like this. I know I lose my angles way too soon in the downswing and have a strong hit impulse that is been the hardest thing to overcome. I'm certain my hand speed is fine, it just tragically comes at the wrong time (at transition) robbing me of distance while costing more effort. Would you say that most pros reach maximum hand speed at or near the trail hip/belt area like at 4:36? I just fear that the takeaway of hands moving faster, sooner doesn't fit for me.
I teach golf every day and have been working on my own club head speed. I have a Dewiz and struggled with how to interpret the max hand speed and distance to impact. But thanks to your video I totally get it. I can’t say that without watching this I would have tried to get faster earlier. But feel like I know have a clear objective to increase my speed. Thanks for the great content.
In his case, it was a change in concept by showing him the difference between what he was trying to do and how that differed from faster clubhead speeds. He felt like he was starting the downswing with his arms. That didn't change the sequence at all, but it did improve his acceleration profile dramatically.
@@kcs05 It's helped so many golfers to FEEL that. The reality is, it's nearly impossible to move the arms in isolation without the body moving, but that thought creates the proper sequence and speed profiles you see in this video. Make sense?
@@AthleticMotionGolf @Kevin Smith It's the same concept if someone asked you to throw a baseball as hard as you can without thinking about it, just do it. Your body is amazing at making all the correct athletic compensations to produce a desired movement if you just let it happen. You'll probably have great body sequencing when the only thought in your head was "move this baseball as fast as I can." I think most golf instructors teach the downswing backwards, as in most say what they want you to do FIRST. When in fact, if you focus mostly on the outcome you want, or what you want to happen LAST (i.e. move my arms/hands as fast as I can), then just like the baseball, your body will naturally and athletically sequence itself to get to your desired outcome.
This is super helpful, explains what I've been observing in my own swing and prompts me to think about a different downswing intent from the top. Thank you for sharing!!
this video is fantastic. never had anyone mention that increasing hand acceleration increases lag. Ive heard all kinds of tips about what to do with the hands at the top like the AM in the video has heard. Keeping them passive isnt gonna be a thought i have anymore
Thanks for this analysis. So hard to understand this concept wrt handspeed. Can you suggest drills which will help optimise this aspect of the golf swing.
When increasing the hand speed as you mention, is that from rotation? My hands are typically the last thing to begin back toward the ball in my downswing. I just want to know if that means I need "faster hands" or if this is a result of rotation.
Very interesting. Not sure though, why faster hands earlier means better lag angle. Is it just that the centrifugal effect has had less time to take place or (my theory) that pulling down with both hands actually has the effect of pulling that angle tighter, so reducing, for a short time, the centrifugal effect?
The key thing you mentioned in this video is to not force holding the angle. That is so important. When I don't think about that, and get my hands moving faster more quickly, the club naturally lags more and I can feel more of the whip through the ball. Great video. Without that point you made, I would not have grasped the key concept.
Wow, awesome! Mike can you explain the difference of what the AM is doing versus what Jack Nicklaus said about releasing as early as possible? If verbalizing is too long, can you do a video answer?
I always took what he was saying as advice against trying to hold the lag angle, which we couldn't agree with more. We increased this golfers angle by NOT trying to hold it!
@@AthleticMotionGolf So the PRO who float loaded probably wasn't trying to decrease the angle but it was done my moving the hands quickly downward with "loose" wrists?
@@jimper15 floatloading and downcocking go together. Look at Woodland. He does not maximize wrist hinge going back. So it happens in the beginning of the downswing without him trying to do it.
WOW, this video together with the video about “Create LAG In Your Golf Swing” by having your arms more in front of the chest in the back swing have increased my average driver club head speed by 4 mph in one day (from 97 to 101). It was even more noticeable in my irons where the speed of i7 increased by 6 mph. It also puts my hands in a better position at impact. My accuracy has suffered a little, but I’m confident that it will become better again with more practice. Amazing that none of the pros at my club have never mentioned this before. I love your videos. It suits my tecnical brain perfectly :)
Magnus, you seem to have a good grasp of this concept (increasing hand-speed earlier). Let me ask you, since I didn’t hear it stated explicitly, how do you actually do this? Just swing harder from the top?
corddyson- Not at all. That's a way to get you to attack the ball from the inside , instead of coming over the top. Doing it "slowly" allows the information to be processed more easily. Once your coconut absorbs it, it's time to increase the tempo in order to get some respectable clubhead speed .
Can we get some more on this example please? Such as how long could the wrist cock angle be held as the arms are active earlier after the correction. Also, its hard to see but it seems the amateur's shoulders are more rotated sooner, drawing the arms down rather than swinging with less syncronisation with the shoulders. Great video, thanks.
We wouldn't recommend trying to hold that angle for any amount of time. Think of that angle as a by-product of doing the other things better. Great comment on the shoulders. That is something we see all the time with ams compared to pros. Pros get the club in position BEFORE cranking the shoulders, ams just the opposite.
Enjoyed the video, and the cross handed drill, will give it a try next time out to the range. What kind of advice do you have for senior golfers wanting more distance off the tee. 71 years old, good health and fairly athletic, but driver is 150 flight, 175 - 180 total. Tough on par 5's and long par 4's
I am 72 and have been having trouble (of course) loosing distance. Just a week or so ago I realized I was just swinging with my hands and arms. So, I figured I'd concentrate on turning my body a little more, back and then through. What do you know?! I gained about 30 yards on my tee shots, and my irons were much longer and more solid... So, I'm I little skeptical about moving the hands faster on the downswing. That would lead me to believe the fastest way to increase your hand speed is to rotate your body faster.
Mike and Shaun this video is excellent and has me curious about lead shoulder speed. I believe I’ve seen all your videos and can’t recall a lead shoulder profile as described here with the hands. Would be awesome to see pro lead shoulder comparisons exactly as done with the hands in this video. For example where does the maximum lead shoulder speed happen? And how do the pros compare in this regard? I’m very interested in seeing if I can achieve the proper hand speed profile by slowing my lead shoulder move starting down.
Great Work Guys, This is really shows what has been taught in the past based on inferior information needs to adjusted because new swing analytics has shown what really happens in a good golf swing is some what different than what was explained by the masses in the pass.
It certainly helps to be able to measure all the great players we're fortunate to work with. We like sharing that info so golfers can start to compare feels with reals and hopefully improve their intent and concepts when needed.
Profound video showing that technique produces clubhead speed. Amazing that the 3mph faster hands can produce 18mph more speed. That’s Rory power. Most ams are trying to accelerate the hands through impact as opposed to the club.
The greatest video I've ever seen. Many thanks! Mike, can we say the acceleration of the hands/grip will be maximized when the right hand presses the shaft down "as soon as but not until" the club head just begins to shallow and free-fall? To me its seems like that.
Thank you ! I ha some old vide'.o of myself from this spring. After watching this video, I learned a great deal by going back and re-watching the video. Many of the flaws that you mention in this and other lessons are clearly evident in my swing. I will try to take this to the range and see if I can get rid of some of the issues you describe. Failing that, how many to get you to look at my videos and make some suggestions?
So,are you advocating (Right Handed facing a Mirror) at about 9 0'clock is about the right position to put on the "Lash" as Tommy Armour called it? (In combination with uncoiling Hip rotation & Shoulders etc) ???
Good video - could you do a video on how to work on tempo and ensuring a smooth transition - I suspect many amateurs (me included) try to “hit” too hard from the top which messes up the timing/sequence. What drills would you recommend to work on this?
That would have been a good final 3 minutes for this video because thinking "faster, earlier" will cause many people problems. The amateur being shown in this video received a lesson to make this happen. It would be good to know what exactly he was told to do. What exactly he was told to guard against, etc. How did he hold his lag without 'trying' to hold his lag? There must have been some drills or physical sensations that were suggested to help this amateur make it happen correctly. Other than that, the mechanics and data shown are pretty awesome.
@@Randsurfer I think the video was more of an advertisement of technology available to perform a swing speed analysis. Again, the video doesnt tell us how to increase our speed, so that's why I concluded it with "waste of time"
I LOVE your stuff. Scientifically proven. I have 78 mph 7 iron speed but way too much wrist cock, we're working on less wrist cock and throwing the clubhead from the top- essentially what you're saying. I need to do it much faster and earlier. I'm a Malaska convert and this proves it. Thanks guys. Best coaching content on UA-cam.
It is not counter-intuitive. This is exactly what Nicklaus is talking about in his release. It is understanding the nuance of the concept of reaching the max hand speed sooner, not from the top. Watch the graphic comparisons again while processing this detail: The faster swing, release starts just under the shoulder line and the standard swing release of most golfers occurs when the hands are under the rib cage. This is the critical zone where the "angles are spent" differently. That is a free gem.
Excellent graphics and explaining the concept of starting the downswing. Is there a drill that will help increase the hand speed at the beginning of the downswing?
It's a fairly natural thing to do, Mike. But we find that intent is the biggest roadblock causing it to be slower than it needs to be. Using the arms, for some reason, has gotten to be a phobia for many golfers. It's hard to make the arms and hands move faster earlier if you don't use them. The best in the world use them.
Athletic Motion Golf. Today I had to fad the ball on a couple of holes that didn’t work. My setup and alinement wasn’t right. You guys are the ones to help me. Where can I get info to come down to see you guys?
It is cool video and give you lot of insights. But, I wonder how many amateurs are going to see this and think quick hands = better lag. Think lot of people are going to go to range and start these quick jerky downswings that burn up speed too quickly instead of accelerating their clubs. This might be where too much info necessarily isn't good thing or beneficial.
Guys, this might be your best video yet. Mind blown. Not only by the fact that pro hands max out earlier, but also HIGHER. For years I've been trying to accelerate my hands through the ball with a concept that the hands reach max speed PAST the ball (but before impact due to shaft lean). This was an amazing reality check. Actually tried this on my carpet (my wife hates AMG now) and by focusing on earlier acceleration, I got a much more powerful feeling and a faster "whoosh" of the club at the bottom of the swing. Can't wait to try this at the range! Thank you!!
I'd imagine it'll be a hard for amateurs to increase the hand speed at the start of the downswing as most amateurs will surely cast the club more, due to lack of trail hand wrist cup and not getting the trail elbow down and in front of the hip.
It shouldn't be. You can easily move your hands super fast without casting and without holding the angle. To feel how to do this, from the top of the swing take your lead hand off the club, lay the club on your arm and shoulder and leave it there while you swing your hand as fast as you can.
@@scifisicko2390 hi I don't understand the laying of the club on your arm? Can you please explain that or even link me to a video or article that shows how to do your drill to increase clubhead speed. Many thanks.
I am going to be working with this. I have lost clubhead speed over the last few years (decades). I think this is what I was doing (somewhat) more naturally in my. I do note that the "pros" had more shoulder rotation and that never hurts to get the hands higher, the right elbow higher, and the right shoulder higher, so there is more to pull down with, allowing an individual to pull down with more speed sooner. Anyway, I will be working on this. I hope to be able to take top quality lessons, maybe from AMG, one day.
I was aware of this hands in front of the ball at impact but thought on the terms of more ball compression resulting in more ball speed many thanks for the video

This is the critical zone where the "angles are spent" differently.. I have other methods to flight my shots, shape, trajectory and spin, but this is good for giving me more distance and smash factor! This is more athletic. A very clear example and explanation! I get that you need to accelerate the hands couple and grip as wuickly as you can in the downswing. Could you please explain though, what level of effort the golfer makes with his hands from their fastest point through to the finish. Do you continue to try to move the hands fast through impact or does the speed generated intially allow the hands to free wheel through without conscious effort. Is the golfer trying to pull or push the grip through to the target or just letting everything release from left arm parallel? Hopeful for some clarification. Best regards from Richard (🇦🇺)
50 year golfer with a bunch of them low single digit handicap. I’ve never heard this concept but very interested to hear exactly you teach how to reach maximum speed earlier.
Another great video! I thought a helpful and simple way to grasp the physics going on is the waterskiing analogy. The handle is the BOAT and club head is the SKIER. The skier is forced to speed up to conserve angular momentum. Another way to look at it. The curve path of the hands is also a factor i.e. tighter radius. Maybe another video subject which would be great to see. Thanks guys...you're the best! PS - shout out to Shaun from Maine, wrote this in front of big snow bank!
It’s called parametric acceleration and it exists in two different planes in a fast golf swing. In the horizontal plane, the hands (boat) change direction quickly (smaller radius) as they “turn the corner” and accelerate the club head (water skier). In the vertical plane, the ground force leverage of the lead leg raises the lead shoulder and hands (boat) upward and the properly lagged club head (water skier) gets accelerated down the target line.
This is an amazing video!!! I have a 5.3 index and have struggled with lag FOREVER! No matter what I do I have trouble creating more lag on the down swing. I can't wait to try your tips.

Loved the visual of the difference between the pro & the amateur and the angle of their club head in getting more distance &clubheadspeed!! !!
All I have to do is club down
Great job!
This is big and makes sense. I’m that AM ! I can’t wait to get this to the range. Excellent explanation
It's such a key part of the golf swing to increase clubhead speed. I agree, very well explained and importantly makes logical sense. Good luck with it. Cheers
Hey Mike, understand moving the hands faster and starting sooner, but what did you mean by also moving them in the proper or correct motion?
Ron finch perhaps staying in (i.e., not moving out towards the ball). He mentioned that as an issue late in the video
Kyle Rhoden Thanks Kyle!
Was there a specific drill that got his grip moving sooner? Great video. For me having the slow motion animation with the angles seems very helpful at least to have an idea of sequencing and how those changes impact the speed.
One of their best videos. Their illustrations and explanations were so clear. Thank you
Hey guys. Love the video. Love the content you put out. Appreciate the time and passion. Thank you!
Im liking the concept/idea/intent of getting the grip moving “sooner, faster, and moving in the right direction.”
If you don’t mind.
Would like to see a drill to work on this. Great stuff!
Ok we will put one up soon :)
How did you measure club head speed at home?
@@toneabet6252 likely a launch monitor…
Great video…as always! I’ve been working on this and notice I’m hitting the ball straighter by speeding hands up early in downswing.
great!
So how does the golfer accelerate the hands earlier, faster rotation, thoughtful pull down with the left hand, how?
Feel the bend at 10 facing the clock accelerating from 10 to 6 releasing the club.
THANKS-
Jeff Street look at his response to an earlier comment. He mentions also looking at 9:45 in the video.
Hey guys what's the best way to increase grip/handspeed have tried different ways have not been successful any ideas
Awesome, thanks for sharing that! Where do you teach?
We shot a new video on how to get those hands moving faster that might also help🤓
What did you say/how did you get him to reach is maximum hand speed sooner and then have his hands decelerate?
In his case, it was a change in concept by showing him the difference between what he was trying to do and how that differed from faster clubhead speeds. He felt like he was starting the downswing with his arms. That didn't change the sequence at all, but it did improve his acceleration profile dramatically.
@@AthleticMotionGolf - So you are saying on the downswing the arms should start the sequence?
@@CosmicApe Thank you, Travisty!🙏
Thank you for a much needed explanation! I hope you can make a video on how to learn this information.
This is super helpful, explains what I've been observing in my own swing and prompts me to think about a different downswing intent from the top. Thank you for sharing!!
love it !! Thanks!
this video is fantastic. never had anyone mention that increasing hand acceleration increases lag. Ive heard all kinds of tips about what to do with the hands at the top like the AM in the video has heard. Keeping them passive isnt gonna be a thought i have anymore
Incredible breakdown as always! This channel continues to improve my golf game!
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Without that point you made, I would not have grasped the key concept.
that's a million dollar tip !
@@jimper15 yep. When we see guys try to do that, it's usually done by cupping that lead wrist and opening the face... neither good for speed lol
Athletic Motion Golf yep Malaska method pivoting the hands early. 👍
Great video as always.... Any chance of repeating same idea with the Driver...? Really curious how this would work on Driver Swing speed..!
Best Video out there about this! Thanks for making and sharing this..
Very insightful. I’m and old, 60+, beginner. I’m working on stabilizing my swing. I’ll be in touch ordering an analysis to work on.
Does this conflict w Harvey Penick’s “magic move” of slowly lowering the right arm and weight shifting in transition?
corddyson- Not at all.
Pros get the club in position BEFORE cranking the shoulders, ams just the opposite.
first time i have seen this concept; would like to see it in other videos. thanks
ok we will do that! ;)
Thanks Mike, can't wait to give this a try.
Let us know how it works!
finally someone explained lag. the best video I've every seem. thank you.
Great info!
What drills focus on this early downward movement of the hands?
ua-cam.com/video/TKrY7PlKZgc/v-deo.htmlsi=1rYg1ACCv4HK1P20
I honestly just try to accelerate when I start my downswing. I never try to hold a lag angle, it does not work.
I don't think Palmer ever tried to hold his move with his arms back down to the ball either. He turned it on as soon as he could.
Just how do I go about increasing hand speed?
Its about reaching max hand speed sooner, not that I have the answer to that.
Lead the downswing with your hands smoothly and let the body react .
Have the club head pointing up towards the sky longer before hitting the ball..
Great Work Guys,
This is really shows what has been taught in the past based on inferior information needs to adjusted because new swing analytics has shown what really happens in a good golf swing is some what different than what was explained by the masses in the pass.
I think you're exactly right. The downswing is a 1/4 second, doesn't leave time to be lazy with the acceleration.
The greatest video I've ever seen. Many thanks! Mike, can we say the acceleration of the hands/grip will be maximized when the right hand presses the shaft down "as soon as but not until" the club head just begins to shallow and free-fall? To me its seems like that.
This is the best video I’ve watched thank you
Thanks!!!
How did he increase his hand speed earlier? What did he do to make that happen? Thanks guys!
Yup. They never answer the most important question that needs to be addressed by this video. Incredible.
I would say feel like you pull down on the handle earlier
So,are you advocating (Right Handed facing a Mirror) at about 9 0'clock is about the right position to put on the "Lash" as Tommy Armour called it? (In combination with uncoiling Hip rotation & Shoulders etc) ???
Yeah, would love to know the move to get hand speed quicker
Give yourself the freedom to move them faster😊
Athletic Motion Golf What would be the “feel” for correct amount of tension in arms/hands when trying to move hands faster?
Art Vandelay do it the other way... move them faster first then see what that feels like to you.
Got to have a good transition using lower body. That’s where you get the whip action.
Good video - could you do a video on how to work on tempo and ensuring a smooth transition - I suspect many amateurs (me included) try to “hit” too hard from the top which messes up the timing/sequence. What drills would you recommend to work on this?
I don’t get it. How to be faster in hands earlier?
That would have been a good final 3 minutes for this video because thinking "faster, earlier" will cause many people problems. The amateur being shown in this video received a lesson to make this happen. It would be good to know what exactly he was told to do. What exactly he was told to guard against, etc. How did he hold his lag without 'trying' to hold his lag? There must have been some drills or physical sensations that were suggested to help this amateur make it happen correctly. Other than that, the mechanics and data shown are pretty awesome.
Theres nothing to get. Video wasnt for you, me, or any other youtube viewer. Waste of time watching this.
@@jacobbelmontes4899 Who was the video for?
@@Randsurfer I think the video was more of an advertisement of technology available to perform a swing speed analysis. Again, the video doesnt tell us how to increase our speed, so that's why I concluded it with "waste of time"
I LOVE your stuff. Scientifically proven. I have 78 mph 7 iron speed but way too much wrist cock, we're working on less wrist cock and throwing the clubhead from the top- essentially what you're saying. I need to do it much faster and earlier. I'm a Malaska convert and this proves it. Thanks guys. Best coaching content on UA-cam.
So...this is counter-intuitive to the old teaching of "don't RIP from the top" right??
It is not counter-intuitive. This is exactly what Nicklaus is talking about in his release. It is understanding the nuance of the concept of reaching the max hand speed sooner, not from the top. Watch the graphic comparisons again while processing this detail: The faster swing, release starts just under the shoulder line and the standard swing release of most golfers occurs when the hands are under the rib cage. This is the critical zone where the "angles are spent" differently. That is a free gem.
@@ericgamboa1617 :)
How can you see that the release is starting earlier? Sorry, but I can't track this down. Thank's.
Excellent graphics and explaining the concept of starting the downswing. Is there a drill that will help increase the hand speed at the beginning of the downswing?
Does the increased and “quicker” hand speed come from a conscious effort to pull the hands down harder in the downswing?
It's a fairly natural thing to do, Mike. But we find that intent is the biggest roadblock causing it to be slower than it needs to be. Using the arms, for some reason, has gotten to be a phobia for many golfers. It's hard to make the arms and hands move faster earlier if you don't use them. The best in the world use them.
Reminds me of the of the old Leslie King "free arm swing" concept back in the day. Julie Inkster was taught this by Mr King.
john Mule very cool. We can measure and qualify more today then in the past, but there’s really nothing new in the golf swing.
Another video from these guys that’s one of the best I’ve ever seen. I’m an Analyst, so more details and visual is great for me. Thanks.
Wow, thanks!
Athletic Motion Golf. Today I had to fad the ball on a couple

@@chadaitken5476 here you go brother athleticmotiongolf.com/inperson/
It is cool video and give you lot of insights. But, I wonder how many amateurs are going to see this and think quick hands = better lag. Think lot of people are going to go to range and start these quick jerky downswings that burn up speed too quickly instead of accelerating their clubs. This might be where too much info necessarily isn't good thing or beneficial.
Ya I’m not sure what to take away from this.
We do it every day with ams. Poor wrist angles will make any downswing difficult, but they can't be used as an excuse😊
Do you have a drill to encourage this? What did am do with you to fix this?
It shouldn't be. You can easily move your hands super fast without casting and without holding the angle. To feel how to do this, from the top of the swing take your lead hand off the club, lay the club on your arm and shoulder and leave it there while you swing your hand as fast as you can.
@@AthleticMotionGolf thank you for this video. So how do you actually achieve this in your swing?.
@@scifisicko2390 hi I don't understand the laying of the club on your arm? Can you please explain that or even link me to a video or article that shows how to do your drill to increase clubhead speed.
Many thanks.
Just a thought, can I ask Mike, Shaun, just how much clubhead speed do you think comes from the wrists and arms?
MAKES TOTAL SENSE BUT THOUGHT YOU WOULD D SHARE A DRILL FRO FEEL THIS MOVEMENT BY TE END OF THE VIDEO ...
Exactly what I was thinking. It's all good to see but what the hell do I do?
Pull down on the handle from the top of the backswing before you unwind body/torso?
I am going to be working with this. I have lost clubhead speed over the last few years (decades). I think this is what I was doing (somewhat) more naturally in my. I do note that the "pros" had more shoulder rotation and that never hurts to get the hands higher, the right elbow higher, and the right shoulder higher, so there is more to pull down with, allowing an individual to pull down with more speed sooner. Anyway, I will be working on this. I hope to be able to take top quality lessons, maybe from AMG, one day.
Just came across this video. It makes sense. Just wondering about any drills to help out with the concept. Thanks.
One of your best and mist impactful videos! Thank you!
I was aware of this hands in front of the ball at impact but thought on the terms of more ball compression resulting in more ball speed many thanks for the video
Fantastic video....I have just joined ur club/site so can u tell me which series I should watch to get more on thus thanks m
Watch the graphic comparisons again while processing this detail: The faster swing, release starts just under the shoulder line and the standard swing release of most golfers occurs when the hands are under the rib cage. This is the critical zone where the "angles are spent" differently.. I have other methods to flight my shots, shape, trajectory and spin, but this is good for giving me more distance and smash factor! This is more athletic. Lots of other factors, esp. club selection, swing path and contact quality at impact

Wow tforr all the drills I lean from downswing concept about dropping the club then rotate and hit with speed, this is something else.
This one explained what in a way I haven't ever seen before. What routines can help achieve it?
Perfectly said - can we borrow that?👊
Absolutely. But what about the guy I borrowed it from? Lol
@@louislane1968 did he make you sign anything?😂
It’s called parametric acceleration and it exists in two different planes in a fast golf swing. In the horizontal plane, the hands (boat) change direction quickly (smaller radius) as they “turn the corner” and accelerate the club head (water skier). In the vertical plane, the ground force leverage of the lead leg raises the lead shoulder and hands (boat) upward and the properly lagged club head (water skier) gets accelerated down the target line.
Would love to see measurements on this pattern and pattern comparison data etc! Maybe Mike and Shaun will provide.
