At the British Open in 1960, the four times (later five times) Open champion Peter Thomson was having a drink with the great golf journalist Henry Longhurst. Longhurst asked Thomson why he hadn't written a golf instruction book. Thomson replied that he would be a bit embarrassed because he thought that all you need to know about the golf swing could be written on a single A4 piece of paper. He then proceeded to give Longhurst a lesson on the alignment and tilt of the shoulders at address, essentially the same as the lesson included in todays video. Thomson thought that if you get this right everything that follows is easy and natural.

I just had a lesson where i was introduced to this neutral head/spine position. I always thought that you needed to be tilted away from the ball. My ball striking was a weak glancing blow even on relatively solid strikes. In a matter of minutes I was flushing the ball off of the sweet spot. My ball trajectory was piercing and I was hitting a baby draw. My distance increased even when I was working on this with a 3/4 swing. I'm excited about playing and practicing again. Thank you for the explanation on the spine non tilt and the slightly open shoulders at address. These new positions feel odd to me but I know they are correct. You're videos have a lot of good information and are well explained. My instructor said to not get too caught up in UA-cam videos but I'm pretty sure he'd be okay with yours.

This video is so timely, I'm a new premier member, just this week this came to me that when I set up was incorrect, I found myself as I tried to drip my back Shoulder down, my head went backward rather than staying centered over my spine. I find now when I setup correct I feel I'm much taller, in a powerful position to hit the ball. Peter from Myrtle Beach, SC

@@AthleticMotionGolf I found that if I'm a shade too far away from the ball my club-to-path goes up to around 5* in-to-out, but when I stand just a little closer I'm able to get that path down to 1-2* in-to-out. It's also reinforcing me to get the body through the swing as the only way to get the club back to the ball is by making a solid sequenced turn to clear the hips and let the arms fall down the line and thru the ball. Next step - retraining the hands to be more neutral at impact (face angle) given the club is on a better path thru the ball.

@@toddmanley2983 great awareness there! Most golfers tend to stand too far away from it and don't realize how close the pros stand. It's always better to move away form it coming down than towards it.

Wow guys, I have working on getting a little more open but was having issues topping and pulling the ball (Last year I switched from playing right handed to left handed). I realized watching this video that my spine was tilting forward (i had no idea that I was doing that) I guess that's a remnant from playing right handed. Once I added a little tilt the other way I stopped topping and pulling the ball at the range. Guys, keep the drills and tips coming I can't to get out a play now.....

i messed around yesterday with the bent right arm at address and a bit flying elbow for me at the top....30 years of golf, it was a completely different feeling. You made a point on the locked to bent to locked again, which i played most of my life and i struggle with my right elbow getting too forward and in, and the club "dropping under". The feel changes were the overall wrist motion is less, which was great after about ten balls and the release was more of a "pull swipe" instead of a "push extend"....the clubface doesn't move as much and its easier to get on top with my arms extending well after the shot...the feel through the shot which i struggle with under pressure feels more with rotation of torso as opposed to arm extension to square the face. thx guyz and great work!

could you guyz address "head weight"? i've been messing with it and just a slight position change of your head weight completely changes all the feels in your golf swing. i noticed if a start with my weight slightly forward and my head weight not back, the swing "feels" are more extending away and pulling "towards" instead with my head weight slightly back more of a pulling back to pushing through....make sense of course?

You two guys are so perfectly interactive with each other in both your descriptive narrations and physical engagement while depicting the actual method or specific task, that it makes these instructional suggestions SO much easier to internalize. And I mean that in being able to internalizing these critical details both mentally and physically. Between Danny Maude delivering the easily understood basics and you guys drilling into those finite details that make MASSIVE changes in strike compression and ball flight consistency in a way that’s very simple to comprehend and emulate, I have been able to completely re-form my swing to a level I honestly never thought I would be able to get to. I now swing with less effort and have realized DRAMATIC gains in ball flight penetration and yardage while producing dead straight shots from a neutral address position. And that’s with literally every club in my bag!! It’s absolutely amazing and I really can’t thank you enough for putting this content out there. Seriously. 👍🏻😎👍🏻

I bet that the last part of the video where Mike points to fixating on the target and not the ball would probably help a lot of these alignment issues.

For aim/alignment I stand behind ball and find something a foot in front of my ball that is in line with target. I try to line up parallel to a line between the ball and that spot. That way I only need to look down range to distant target only once or twice. Do same with my putting. Don't know if it's righ or not but it seems to work for me.

Hi guys, only 4 minutes in but need to make my tee time 😂, I’m just wondering about the shoulder alignment. When I see most pros from down the line view I have noticed that you can see their left arm behind their right arm. With me my right elbow and arm obscures my left arm so it makes me think I’m aiming my shoulders too far left. That makes me think the pros shoulders are pointing to right? Or is it their grip being strong which brings their left arm more over with their right arm more relaxed with palms facing more towards sky?

@8:29 I'd love to make some of the moves the pros make, and i'd love to have their ability to aim. I must have aiming issues because for me to get a straight/draw type of shot I have to have my feet open and my shoulders square or a little closed. I think it's most likely I tend to aim my feet very closed, and for me having me feet feel open is actually just square.

I struggle with a push slice mainly and I’ve been told it looks like my hips are closed and shoulders open. I believe my hips look closed though because I naturally like to drop my right foot back a bit (I think subconsciously it helps me rotate more on the backswing) which I think gives the illusion my hips are more closed than that may actually be. Any thought though on if I should work on getting that right foot more square?? Or should I just focus on this set up feelings first of hips shoulders spine?
