Vocal Coach Reacts! Disturbed! The Sound Of Silence! Live!
David Drainman is a classically trained singer, he had flu during this performance and the TV channel saw fit to autocorrect, he was furious. He is a perfectionist and hates autotune.
Hey there 😊 isn't he contemporarily trained? I read a lot about him, but I never read anything about classical training
(And he always sings cobtemporarily)
David is trained as a cantor or hazzan. He does have one of the best voices around in my opinion.
He was also trained in Oprah
This myth keeps circulating and people keep repeating it. He was NOT classically trained. As a kid, he was taught to be a cantor at Temple. Huge difference. He has taken voice lessons, obviously, and has perfected the vocal fry technique so that he doesn't shred his vocal cords. But no, he wasn't classically or operatically trained.
@@JasminGardenia you are correct.
Paul Simon himself said that the Distubred cover of their song is the best that he has heard and endorsed it
This is my favorite version. So powerful.
Gives me chills every time I listen to it
I'm pretty sure Art more or less saidthe same thing too.
Not only is it the greatest cover ever, but this version, live, might be the best song ever.
And he even reached out to David Draiman with the words "This is no longer my song"
Watching someone hear this the first time…gets me every time.
At 66 I am very familiar with the original but was stunned by this version. They are both wonderful and perfect for their time. As time has gone by I think the need for this song has become more urgent. This version sends that message.
Agree Beck. I’m 60 and this version represents so much of what is happening today. Then you add in the instruments and video. Perfection!
61 here Agree 100%
62 and same.
***** The Warning *****
"And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made." ~ Paul Simon
"And the people bowed and prayed, to the golden calf they made." ~ Old Testament
.
The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel is sad resignation.
The Sound of Silence by Disturbed is Listen, DAMMIT!
David is not just a singer, he is a true creative genius.
Watching vocal coaches react to this has become my new favorite hobby
David is from a family of cantors. He is a classically trained gift. So is the entire band.
The singer, David, said he was very unhappy with this performance because he had the flu and it was difficult for him to sound like his normal self, or so he says. Lol for me, he's amazing whether he has the flu or not! You can watch the official video as well. It's so artistically and thoughtfully done! Thank you for reacting to this!!! After this song he has become my favorite male vocalist. ❤️
He was sick and still sounds better than a lot of the mainstream popular music singers out there
Look at anything he does with Disturbed!! Plus he's just amazing!!! Because you don't get a lot of metal singers that can sing like that!!
Simon and Garfunkel’s version is the warning. It tells what can happen if we don’t listen. David’s is the rage we feel that the warning was ignored!
it's so fuckin' gay that people go in and write this comment on every video containing this song. honey, you didnt think of this comment, you just found it on another video containing this song and then added it here for likes.
we? were not "we" the ones who ignored the message?
@@JPVNG67 I don't know about you, but I was not even born yet.
I heard David was not happy with this performance because he was sick. I think he sounds INCREDIBLE!
Actually being sick was not the reason. He wasn't happy because despite being sick he didn't want his voice autotuned, but the sound guy did it anyways
An amazing ability to sing if he was sick. Even yet so touching and beautiful sounding gravelly powerful voice...
Props to the writer of the orchestra score, too. The bass drums give it the definition and gut wrenching power that touches me right in the feels!
Watching peoples reaction to him singing "pray" is why I watch thsse
Absolutely same here lol
Same here! When he growls out “pray” I lose my mind every time!❤️
Absolutely!
This performance is legend. Still gives chills...
David Draiman is classically trained. One of the most beautiful voices I’ve heard! I’ve been a vocalist for 48 yrs classically trained as well. I noticed he also softens his vowels in some words “Of silunce instead of silince” for example. Best version of this song I’ve ever heard!!
He didn’t cause the wobble! He’s got the greatest voice on earth!
I've seen many voices coaches reactions to this song, and they were all totally blown away by his voice and talent to use it. He sure got the pipes, , gave me the chills.
Best way to describe David Draimen’s voice is to compare it to a car engine, I think. But not just any car engine. We’re talking a big bore Lamborghini V-12. When he’s idling at low registers, it’s this throaty, grumbling basso grow covered in velvet, then at cruising speeds (mid range) it’s this rich bellow that just keeps going on and on with little to no effort... and then he floors the throttle and it’s a musical shriek from the depths of the abyss. Listening to a Disturbed song is a bit like watching a high end super car doing hot laps on a race circuit.
This is the best description I've seen haha
Same here!
Phoenix Decim I’ve watched too much Top Gear... :p
That's perfect
Holy shit I never thought I'd read such an accurate description of this song and also Disturbed as a band. Well done I love this!
Priceless reactions, Sam. I am as untrained in voice as a tone-deaf and nasal Michigan boy can be, and still you helped me to see and hear Dreiman's voice more completely.
And you did so with my favorite accent, Bello. A pleasure to see and learn from.
You can see the emotion David put into this. I mean....the songs creators recognized this. I believe Simon said this is no longer our song.
This voice coach has a better voice compared to the other coaches I've watched critique this performance. Nice job
He was proper sick singing this and he didn't want auto tune, the studio engineers did that! I have seen loads of reaction videos to this version and the official version. SO many people are blown away by it!
I get such a kick out of watching reactions to David from those who have never heard of him or disturbed
His voice is amazing but to truly appreciate his ability, and the influence this song has, go listen to disturbed first, then listen to this song
It will all make sense
I agree listen to Down with the sickness
OWWW WAAA AHHH AHHH
Hell yea \m/
Exactly...and go to a concert or 3 to make it even possible
Yeah, David Draiman was very sick that night with the flu. He'd requested no tuning anyway, but they had it ready to go just in case. If you watch carefully, you can actually see the moment they turn it on. He notices and shoots a dirty glance at the sound guy. XD Honestly the official video is much better. He said when the idea struck him, he locked himself in the studio and recorded take after take, slowly locking in the arrangement and feel. It was the longest studio session he'd ever done, and when he was finished, the rest of the band and the producer were just stunned and haunted and knew it was something really special.
The autotune wasn't on during the live performance, It was added in post production. He didn't know it was added until he saw it after and was furious.
The video is good but I prefer the live version of him singing. Dont think much autotune was added.
Barefoot I so agree. I love David’s voice. Even though he was sick, he did a phenomenal job.
Its amazing!
@@buttnugget2900 you are correct. Thanks for beating me to it.
There’s also a version where he sings it mid concert with myles Kennedy. He’s 100% in this performance and the harmony match with myles is absolutely perfect. I’d 100% recommend that version as well.
I also love the version with Myles Kennedy - their harmonizing fills my soul❤️
Yeeeees
I loved that collaboration also. Hope to see more in the future. Miles allowed David to do his rich tones while enhancing his voice to match this epic song.
Very deep voice. Aside from the original, this song is also made for him.
At 5:02 during his "speaking" line, he struggles a bit and you can see he knows it. He is singing ill. This song is amazing done by him. Raw emotion and anger. It is how the song should be sung.
Oh boy!!! I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s of this opinion but even David’s speaking voice is SO calming!! So soothing!! So.... “Ugh! YES! Read me the dictionary! “🙌🏻 he’s such a great singer/artist! 🙌🏻 *chef’s kiss* perfection ! 🤣🤣
Totally calming voice❤
This song has claws that claw open your soul !!
He has a beautiful voice and i have never heard this song done as great as he did. I loved it
True !!!
This is the perfect cover for "The Sound of Silence". Amazing.
This version is better than the original in my opinion. It gives me body chills, Bravo Disturbed 💙
Not the version to really appreciate what he/they did with this, and FEEL what we're meant to feel...he was rather sick here and not quite able to give it it's full ooomph...seriously, even if you don't want to also react to the official music video, go listen (and absolutely WATCH) it just for your own enjoyment...seriously....it's incredible...and you don't even have to go look for it :P Would love to know what you think of it then ua-cam.com/video/u9Dg-g7t2l4/v-deo.html
Dunno, isn't the purpose of a vocal coach reacting to songs, reacting to pure vocals? Live reactions are way better for that, even if he was sick.
The studio-version is nice and all, but it is honed and altered (artificially perfected if you will). I like both but this setup here beats the music video imo.
(the video story is still very dope)
@@LivingPeople12 The problem is, the studio used auto tone on this live performance due to David being sick, as mentioned. Neither version is actually a true, unaltered performance.
Jay Jay the studio version David really shows off his “vocal fry”... I think the studio version is a little better than this live version ( especially if he was sick)... it’s still an amazing performance
@@LivingPeople12 to a certain degree, yes, which is why the official music video is better; you get a better idea of his voice.
We know for a fact (because of how much he hates it) that there's no autotuning in the official music video; we can't say that about this one.
We know for a fact that his voice in the official music video is untainted by illness (they would have rescheduled the recording session); the opposite is true of this performance.
And, perhaps most importantly, we know for a fact that when we hear him in the official music video, we are hearing him with a properly warmed up voice. We cannot say that about this version.
The live version is the first I saw of this cover and I appreciated everything they did and I felt emotional with this performance. He sounded incredible to me especially for being sick and didnt hear much autotune.
Your facial reactions say it all !!! This is an amazing cover of a brilliant song, 1st done by Simon & Garfunkel warning us, if we don't change our ways we are headed for destruction, and Disturbs version is angry, because we didn't listen to the warnings 😡 Loved your emotional reactions!! Footnote: He had a cold during this performance.....
And the guy was sick when he did the Conan show -- and still sounds this fantastic.
I love your expression when he started growling and then sustained the growling.
If you’re looking for another good acoustic sound by Disturbed, I recommend their live performance of “hold on to memories”!
He was ill when he did this live. He was totally ticked when they autotuned a couple of spots.
From what i read he went absolutely ballistic because the production pomised they wouldn't but did anyway, so he refused to work with them ever again.
@@edoardoprevelato6577 it was a tv show man..normally its a one ticket go
@@JPVNG67 that's not true at all, people like Colbert, Oliver etc have the same guests multiple times to advertise their work.
@@edoardoprevelato6577 maybe.. I think for most it's a one ticket thing. But maybe u r right
I believe Draiman said that the TV studio added the autotune effect since he was still suffering effects from the flu so they thought it would help, I think when you listen to it it’s clear he didn’t need it at all and it actually hurt the sound of the performance but in spite of that, it still sounds INCREDIBLE. He was quite upset that they did that if I remember correctly
They're heavy metal band from Chicago Illinois USA🤙🤙🤙
At this performance he was so sick with the flu, he was in bed two hours before he performed. I think to truly appreciate this performance you must listen to a “metal” Disturbed” song to appreciate the voice!
He has spectacular voice. Sounds great even when sick!
Wow! Wow! It's the reaction every single person has when they hear this song.
The way he forms his vowels is so unique and captivating. Like, just how your eyes close and I can see on your face the note hit home on "...and in the naked light i SAWWWW..." and just the way he says "saw" gives it so much more power.
I love watching people watch him! He is one of my favorites of all time! I love the moment that he starts to do his thing. They either make a super surprised face or start to chuckle like you did at the prospect of what is yet to come!
Good call on production tuning. He has the flu when he went in the show and production tuned it without his knowledge because they were worried that the flu would affect the performance. He was furious when he found out they turned it.
This has been posted on many reactions.
Simon and Garfunkel's version was a warning.
Disturbed's version is rage because the warning was ignored.
I liked your comment all dramatic, like death note.
I don't know you, but you are already one of my favorite people.
My thoughts exactly
Could not have said it better.
David had the flu when he did this performance!!💞
Sung LIVE and SICK running 103 fever at the quality. DONE DEAL
Prefer this version than the original, love the rich dark tone he brought to the song👌👍(like your honest reaction cheers)
The VIDEO is SO SO SO much better.
You have to listen to "Hold on to the Memories " live by Disturbed. It is such an emotional experience.
I would classify his voice as...AWESOME, nuff said
he had a cold and a bleeding leision on a vocal cord when he did this which makes it even more awesome every other reaction video ther vocal coach has had their soul shaken around
I always tell people to watch the official music video for this song rather than the "live" version from Conan, as it's actually a more accurate representation of how his voice sounds when he's not feeling under the weather and being autotuned.
The prominence of this version on the reaction circuit actually kinda bugs me. I once saw a reactor who recognized the one note that was more heavily autotuned, and they said something to the effect of "if he can't hit those notes he should know that about himself and not try to push himself", and I was like *"He had a cold! The autotuning wasn't even with his permission!"*
I agree. He has the voice of an angel and demon and if they knew what they were talking about they would hear how great a voice he has!
Yeah I got blocked by them on social media. I lost my sheet on that...and they didn't appreciate I knew more about it than they did and their assumptions were just that and their ignorance was embarrassing
The official video is so distracting though... the imagery is so heavy-handed and melodramatic, and honestly takes away from the stark message of the lyrics and the beautiful arrangement imo
Loved the video that went with this and yes his voice is even more pure on it with no horrible auto tone
u r telling me that the studio records songs are not all autotuned???
David had acid reflux so bad they had to do surgery on him. The fleshy flap that stops acid from coming up from the stomach was totally eroded away so he does not have that anymore. He lives with it with meds, a strict diet and sleep elevation. So its absolutely amazing his voice is so amazing !!
Prettiest song I have ever heard. I'm so glad I'm a metal head!
The incredible similitude with Phil Collins on that high pitch he throws on 5:09 is astonishing, exactly on "songs"
This still gives me the chills!
David is in very much control of his voice he has been trained by the best. He keeps his vocal fry wet and pushed forward in his mouth and not leaning on his vocal chords. Thats how he sings so amazing by keeping super trained.
Maybe you don't know, his training/education is formed during becoming a kantor in a synagogue. Henk Poort, who tried to do this during Best Singers, did his after 2hrs of practice with a coach. He is a baritone. Though I suspect he practiced quite a bit before going on stage... It would be nice to have them side by side, right? (Hint, wink, hint) 😁
Well look at that, the link to Henk singing this song for Floor magically appeared, Sam. Imagine that. I guess it would be easier for you do it, huh? :-) ua-cam.com/video/q_BJaM-UrXc/v-deo.html
I have nothing against this Disturbed version, I do not say it is better or worse than Henk's version. I will say Henk's version is extraordinary.
Ooh ooh ooh!!! What a fabulous idea!!!
Speaking of Floor...where is the NW Army, and how has this young man not yet been hit with 1,000 requests to listen to her yet?
@@cristiaolson7327 the army was here months ago, he's already done some Nightwish
This goes into my soul!! This song is CLASSIC!! His voice is so powerful and profound!! Just freaking lovely!!! The is a comment on society!!!
Great reaction!
One of the greatest live performances in music history in my opinion.
Peace....
He said he was coming off of the flu but this was wanted to do classically-trained to sing live performance he couldn't turn it down he say and he nailed
Remembering when this first was first released it was warning of how life would involve and here we are from 1963 to 2022 !! This is the best version of this song I’ve heard. Paul Simon even rang to congratulate the performance ,never done before.
I do wish people who are going to react to songs would do some research ,it can’t be that onerous to do !!!
His Voice is just Butter Even With the Flu!
The warble comes from his having the flu during this performance.
David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime. He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent and obvious training to deliver what he does!! Can sing like an angel or the devil ! Loved your reaction and your take on David's performance ....was mine too! Try "Deceiver", "The Night", "Indestructible", "The Light" and "Violence Fetish" by Disturbed too.....umm, a "bit" heavier.....lol....
David Draiman's voice is unparalleled. Awesome....so controlled and just damn natural talent.
David is a trained Cantor singer and his family was not happy when he formed a heavy metal band and the fans were not happy when he sang this song. But Paul Simon clompitemented with this cover. This song is made for the present day. Did you hear the anger in his voice. ! OMG!!
If I could, I would marry his voice. So smooth and beautiful.
Henk Poort (he sang Phantom of the Opera with Floor Jansen) did a cover of this on Beste Zangers. I would love to see your reaction to it.
imho henk did great on that version but its not as good as the disturbed version honestly because he cant sing the growly part as good as david. BUT he is not trained in it so you can't blame him on that. and for 2 hours of preparing it is insane!
datNozzle don’t agree. I like Henk’s deep voice better.
I like the video version better, very intense. I’ve heard many many say that he was sick with the flu while doing this, sounds pretty darn good for having the flu. I’ve had the flu twice in my life and couldn’t even get out of bed, much less even look presentable to do anything. This guys voice is amazing. Also heard that he’s classically trained. There are a couple of interview videos of him out in UA-cam where he talks of his upbringing and training.
I love watching people react to this performance for the first time, for I know what's coming! ;-) You all react the same, with growing incredulity as David ups the intensity and leans into his voice more as the song goes on.
I am on a four hour binge of reaction video's to this song and I refuse to apologize.
-Draiman covers roughly two-and-a-half octaves from bottom to top. His vocals are so distinctive.
-
-Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan.
-David: "The fact that I was sick as a dog (laughs). I remember I was definitely fighting something off, but it was a cool experience. It was cool performing with an actual orchestra. It was really vibing and the mood helped, I think, enhance the delivery. The stars just aligned that night and everything went right."
I’ve seen disturbed 3 times and his voice is perfect
Paul Simon actually put it up on his social media. An absolute first
Mary Juarez yes, Paul Simon bequeathed this song to David saying “....it’s your song now.” Amazing story telling by Disturbed.
Great analogy! Love your reaction! Love Disturbed! David is a great singer. They play some heavy music! Awesome stuff! 👍✌
You need to listen to Are you ready? Or Down with the Sickness. The man's voice is phenomenal
A Very Strong Warning from God to ALL of us !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BEAUTIFUL.................The Words of the Prophets are Written !!!!!!!!!!!
Yours is my favorite reaction. Your expressions were worth a thousand words. Pure and to the point perfect analysis/reaction. I subscribed based on this video
Paul Simon said he loved this cover of this song. I love it and the change of key puts a different spin on this song.
It makes the song that much more powerful....
Paul Simon said after hearing the Disturbed version of this song, "This is how it should've been sung".
And again the first reaction, first verse is wow and get more WOW as it goes on!
Sam, David had influenza and performed this live on the Conan show but, if you're interested, watch the original video his band put out - his voice is clear as a bell and, as intense as this performance was, his performance on the video is even more so. Cheers
The word you're searching for I think is "rasp," in regards to the texture he's adding to his voice :D
My interpretation of this song, revised:
This song is written with two separate people or consciousnesses singing
it. Those that are waking up and those that have been awake for a very
long time. The first, third and fifth verse is sung from the perspective
of the unawakened and the second and forth verse are sung from the
perspective of the awakened.
Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
Hello, darkness, my old friend is about people that have been kept in
the dark and they're telling the darkness that they are experiencing
something new in their vision. They (the awakened/aware ones) planted
the seeds of truth/Light, and they are just starting to become aware.
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
There are fewer of the awakened, and they feel as if they are alone
under the Light of truth, because they refused to by into the lies the
dark has been trying to feed them. Then one day they saw a crack in
the armor of dark, they saw a opportunity to break the sound of silence.
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
And in that moment they saw all of the light workers/star seeds
(awakened Ones) telling
those that were still asleep the truth/Light, through telepathy
those that were sleeping heard and saw the truth/Light in a very subtle
way,
but yet they couldn't share this Light/truths with anyone for fear of
being attacked
by those that controlled the sound of silence.
They wrote the truth in songs, the truth had to be give covertly as not
to disturb the sound of silence (the dark). And when the people became
aware of the
Light/truth and realized that they had been in darkness the whole time,
it really pissed them off.
"Fools," said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
They reached out to those still in slumber, trying to give them
Light/truths, but they wouldn't open their minds to new truths, instead
remained in the sound of silence.
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence."
The people were so caught up in working hard to pay for all of the
things, the boats, cars, electronics, all of the toys that they covet.
They couldn't see or hear the truth, they were too distracted by
consumerism. The awakened/prophets have been trying to tell them through
their songs and poems, and that whisper of Light/truth awakened the
people from their slumber and they became ONE. Did you notice the ship
sailing into the Light at the end of the studio version?
Your obvious enjoyment was a pleasure to watch Sam.
Subscribed.
Simon and Garfunkel made this song as a warning. Dave made the final warning out of it. You believe every word he delivered and you feel it. Epic!
Simply beautiful. Thanks for sharing
There is a video of this as well worth watching...you have a great ear
I love this version disturbed do great covers, they are a fantastic live band their own songs are awesome too, give them a blast sometime.
I've been watching a bunch of these vocal coach reviews, and very few even mention the fact that he gave this amazing performance, SITTING DOWN, because he was so sick at the time. I'm not a vocal coach, but I'd love to hear a professional opinion on the difficulty of getting that kind of projection, while seated.
cool vid/reaction! keep'em rollin! this interpretation of this legendary song is timeless!!
I grew up hearing the original because my mom was a fan of S & G, and I love it. I also love Henk Poorts take. But Disturbed's is my favorite. Their version makes me _feel_ every word and the message of the song. Gives me chills every time. (And yes, the station used autotune, which David was very unhappy about, despite him being sick... he really can do it perfectly live). You should check out more of their music. - Great reaction.☺🎼
Good, well thought out reaction, Sam. That voice is very, very special.
Love the Shamrock!
What blows me away about this song is that Disturbed is a heavy metal band that came out of the Nu Metal era. This is no mere departure from their usual music.
And that gravelly howl David does is the signature of the band.
Just Brilliant!
Go online and find the video.. He was furious at what the show did as he was sick but the video is AMAZING
