Come to find DISTURBED has a big a$$ catalog so....asking you all....going the total opposite of this song, which one is their heaviest as far as more rock/metal track? Thanks for the super coolbeanz comments 🤙🤙🤙
They also did a cover of Land of Confusion, it's pretty good but I'm not sure if worth reacting to. My personal favourite of theirs is Perfect Insanity, so I hope you can do that, it's just solid on all points and has great energy. They started out as a Nu-Metal band and slowly evolved to a more typical modern Hard Rock/Metal style. A lot of their songs sound somewhat similar so they are very much a band I cherry pick songs from. Their most famous song would be Down With The Sickness, which made them famous during the peak of Nu-Metal. I also quite liked Stupify back in the day, which was my favourite in the Nu-Metal era from them. The vocalist David Draiman was originally most known for using a distinctive caveman grunt like vocalization, some people made fun of him for that even though he is a great vocalist. This Sound of Silence cover gained quite a bit of fame, as they even did live performances of it on late night shows. Don't expect much similar to this though.
"Stupify" was my intro to Disturbed and I really enjoy "Prayer". It was great to hear this played live and Myles Kennedy (another amazing singer from various projects) join David Draiman singer of Disturbed. Amazing.
“10,000 fists” is a good one! Also having seen Disturbed live multiple times I will tell you that David’s voice is as good of not better live than his studio performances. I was shocked!
I figured that someone would put this up. The live version he did of this was amazing. Also, my understanding is that he was trained as an opera singer. That explains his vocal discipline.
When Paul Simon first heard this song, he contacted David from Disturbed, and told him the he now owns the song, he was so blown away with Disturbed's cover it. Praise indeed.
You're mixing covers and artists. It was Trent Reznor that said that about Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt and what he said was "“I wasn’t prepared for what I saw, and it really then, wasn’t my song anymore.” Simon simply said he was impressed with the "powerful performance" on Conan.
@@fritzcolburn glad you commented. I think this cover is nothing special, it doesn't hurt the original nor does it add anything meaningful. The song was great to start off with and it's hard to improve on perfection.
@@IvarMeijer I actually completely disagree with almost everything said there. Yes, the original is a masterpiece. But as long as I've been around I've felt it needed to be darker. Then this cover came out and it was exactly what I felt it needed to be. This, Hurt and Red Sun Rising's cover of "Uninvited" are 3 of the best covers ever. I love the original "Sound of Silence" and "Uninvited" but loathed the original "Hurt". Prefer each of their covers.
I listened to the original as a kid...50 years later my high school son say's "Dad, check this song out." I was mesmerized and played this over and over and over a hundred times..just powerful, amazing job on a classic that nobody thought could ever be topped.
"...over and over a hundred times", under the guise of the 60's and 70's leafy green we have known these words were never accompanied by music and feeling in context, something more akin to the movie Alien in a PG theater. This is my reply to you. My comment to this performance of Disturbed is also posted. ~ thank you, peer.
Exactly the same thing happened to me. My now 26 year old son had me listen to it. It was on repeat over and over and over. I have cried, but most of all I sing it with him, almost without sound so I can hear his voice - but with all of the emotion behind it.
This song absolutely broke me. A few minutes after my dad passed away, the phone of someone in the room started playing... He hadn't moved, didn't touch his phone, hadn't been listening to it beforehand, it was inexplicable. We used it as the closing song at his funeral, and the day we spread his ashes we heard it 4 times, twice on the radio and twice in different shops at different times. It's forever attached to my heart xx
Same here. Just seems far more relevant today than when I first listened to it as a teenager. Relevant because there is so much less real life interaction in the age of the internet, the new neon God. To me it speaks of alienation, of press this button, fill in this form. Computer says no. Guy's voice is just amazing. I love the way it goes from tender to angry. Negative to positive at the end. This is a cautionary tale for all of us, to listen to those real voices on the subway wall. To connect in real life, we are human. Just beautiful. Discovered song watching ice skating. Not a heavy metal fan. Google ice skating, sound of silence Discovered it whilst watching ice skating
Love your analogy. Mine so far was just a different phase in the reaction process to a problem : Disturbed are stuck at the revolt stage, while S&G are already at the resignation phase. (the usual denial into revolt into acceptance/resignation pattern) I guess we would all still be in denial :) (which got Disturbed angry and loops into your thoughts ^^ haha)
And he said sorry, I have to pause to tell you my thoughts on the other parts and then....no pause. I think he was stunned. I know I was the very first time I heard it on the radio. I literally had the same thought he did back when it played on the radio going "Here comes the guitar riff". It's just powerful, emotional, and strong. And yes, I am old, but I do like rock.
My Dad said he was not a huge fan of the thought of listening to a cover of this song. He now says it is his favourite and is now a Disturbed Fan. He is almost 70 now.
Fantastic song, fantastic cover. My folks tend to think music stopped after 1980, but it's still going and going strong. Probably a lesson for all of us, especially those who enjoy reaction videos of classic songs. Not preaching, just something I've been thinking about.
@@chuckybeastly3600 you definitely are right on a few things. To me mainstream music died in the early 90s, and sadly, had to swim just out on the edges. There are some great bands that came out of the 80s and 90s, then around early 2k, they had to hide their arts for a while as synthetic music took over.
I am like your Dad, and for 40 years I thought no one could do a S&G cover justice. I am glad Disturbed proved me wrong. First time i heard it I went a little misty eyed.
I'm 70 years old tears in my eyes unbelievable I started saying the F-word constantly couldn't believe what I was hearing and seeing perfect perfect perfect this man is a gift from God
Some of their music for us older people is a bit hard (the meanings can be very right on point and a bit deep) but ... who else can sing like this man ? O M G .. what a gift he was given !!! Your are right John Doe .. tears in my eyes also .. the meaning is so deep and Simon really backed him up in this version and rightly so ...
I heard a description that was something like this. The original is a warning for people to change their ways before it's too late. The cover is a howl of rage that the warning wasn't heeded.
Honestly it’s hard to watch their video for it tho cuz the Genesis video is just so insane. I like both versions a lot but audio I have to go with Disturbed.
From the resignation to what's going on in the original to the resistance to what's going on in the Disturbed cover, Brilliant. I'm 58 and know the Simon & Garfunkel well but this gives me goosebumps every time
I’m sure someone has already recommended it, but Disturbed doing this song live on Conan is just as incredible, if not even better, than the recorded version.
I’ve had goosebumps and listened to Disturbed for years now. And he is the best man and family man ever. He would give the shirt off his back to a little old lady like me. I totally live him. Wish he was my son.
@@debbierobinson8804 Yeah he said it was so hard to make the decision to cover it as he wasn't sure at all he could do it justice. Fair to say he pulled it off ok. lol
Paul Simon was 21 or 23 when he wrote this iconic song. He said this is his favourite version. David Draiman trained as a cantor, hence the voice control, and comes from a long line of cantors. Many of us always feel that the original version was a warning to us to heed the world and how things were progressing. This version is what happens when we don't hear the warning. Listen to him singing live on the Conan O'Brien show as many of us prefer this version. David was sick but insisted on singing and had to be carried off stage at the end.
My husband loved this song and played it all the time, when he passed I had it played at his funeral. There is something very special about this version that you can’t put into words
its honest and meaning, its true. the original was artifical, it was ment to be specialyl meaningful, just like a motivational calendar and stayed shallow. this version however brought in every fiber of the lead singers beeing, a true believer in this message. its not just following a trend in the 60s, its finding meaning in it in todays world
David Draiman was taught by a opera singer, so when he does his hard rock or screaming, he will not destroy his vocal chords. So that's why he is such a dam good singer!!
@@CharlestonWhite-Clips DUDE he is Jewish and did orthodox . But as investigators say " THAT WAS DEBUNKED" about being in Israel and all that stuff! Get the facts straight! This came straight from the horses mouth as the saying goes! I heard him in a interview say he was taught by a opera singer so he could do his "screaming or yelling" so he would not wreck his vocal chords.
@@melgerlach6356 You're right man, the guy misunderstood your comment. He was trained as a cantor, but that doesn't exclude the possibility that he may have been trained by an opera singer at some point.
I am so in love with him and his voice. The way he uses his instrument is awe inspiring. I tend to think that influence had a lot to do with the perfect blend of his vocals with the string instruments in this arrangement. Perfection.
@@stefevr couldnt you say that about the original poster andrew? or anyone who posts in youtube comments for that matter..... *becomes self aware* uhh nevermind that was a dumb opinion
He started out the song in a very melancholy type of presentation which totally fits the original meaning of the song. And he ended very angry about the lack of humanity in our world and it fit completely and perfectly. This song is permanently on my playlist
I grew up with the original. As a purist I didn't want to hear this, I was afraid it would be a massacre of the original. Gottamit this was great! Just great! Wow...
Just a little fact, Disturbed has now made this version of The sound of silence, one of the all time downloaded/played songs to date. It is like Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt. That became an instant classic once he did it. This song became a classic back when Simon and Garfunkel performed it in 1969. Now Disturbed's version has become a classic for new generations of listeners. I've heard other bands and performers do this song, but they have never had the power and feeling as the original, until now. Disturbed has matched the power and feeling of the original while also adding their own spin to make it theirs.
I feel like this version truly does the lyrics justice. The original feels too folky and light for the weight of what the words are carrying. With the Disturbed version it truly hits you with the weight and the emotions of what this song is supposed to mean
YESSSS! My husband and I just heard this for the first time yesterday. It was their performance on Conan from several years ago, and now I’m obsessed. My husband was powerfully moved by the words and I realized he had never really ‘heard’ them before and we discussed the very thing you’re talking about.
Paul Simon was only 21 when he wrote the song. He deserves massive mountains of credit. And btw, Disturbed’s version is the only cover Paul Simon’s put on his social media.
When I first heard this version, it made me forget Simon and Garfunkel did this first. That's how much I love this version. We owned the vinyl record of the Simon and Garfunkel version. This version is the one that makes you actually feel the song and know what the song actually means. The anger and frustration is heard here. It's beautiful!
Simon and Garfunkel, their version off the song has 32 million hits, not bad, this Aussie Band, with official music video, and conan show, over 1 Billion... hits, and it is shit load better..
I didn't forget for one second who sang this song. S@G The man singing the "sound of silence" in this version has changed my mind on music its was like the super man of all music, voices, I am speechless.
YESSSSSSS IT IS SPECTACULAR !! He has a range that you actually think for a second it's someone else's voice when he goes soft until he digs deep and then his thunderous Voice bursts out goes right through you like a reverberation of a thunder cloud and giant concert speakers only it's his Voice doing it !! He's impressed me more than any rocker since the 70's or earlier has or pretty much any genre. He's something special that only comes along once in a while and I pray we get to keep it for a very very long time . There's so much promise in a voice like that . Everyone should hear him and know his voice doesn't always reflect the Name of his band he's a screamer but he's a classically trained musician and pianist and has a voice with unbelievable range . Lol can you tell I love him ? 😂😂
His two voices are so polarizingly beautiful, on one side the liquid gold silky smooth tones, on the other side the super aggressive buzz saw ripping distorted tones. Perfect.
When my daughter told me about this, I thought. No Way, Jose. Nobody can do it better than Simon and Garfunkel, but Wow! and Wow! I was blown away by this voice and version.
The way David Draiman brings the emotion to this song - from hesitating to disturb the silence around him to anger that he isn’t being listened to - it injects this song with so much more feeling. I’m not knocking Simon & Garfunkel at all because the song itself is very powerful on it’s own, but Disturbed really helps the listener to feel the anger and outrage that the words have always hinted at. I absolutely love this cover as it’s one of the few that manage to lift it just that much higher.
I am so sorry, I read the words in your comment, and the pain is so great...I think you love him more than your heart can bare and I know he loved you right back. He's safe now...and I think he wants you to know that.. May the Lord be with you all your days.. be safe..

The first time I heard this on the radio, I pulled my car over to the side of the road and just sat there. What an absolutely powerful cover of an already powerful song.
Yes,,,I believe the word would be "stunned..." (The singer is David Draiman, vocalist for the band Disturbed. He's also a classically trained vocalist..)
I can never listen to this song without having some kind of religious experience for a religion I don't follow. I shiver, tears hit my eyes. It's honestly a masterpiece in building up a song through the instruments, the introduction of the instruments. The powerful vocalist leading the song solo. The change from a whisper to a rousing call. I just love every moment of this cover.
Masterpiece is a good description. The build up was on point in relation to the vocal building. The lighter counterpoint in piano and guitar put light into the darkness. This I love. I hate the formulaic, standard build up in pop songs that affect the solar plexus without having any real meaning. This slips sideways into the heart and then the soul and brings the clarity in its meaning through that unification. Wow. Waxing lyrical over something I've only heard in two parts. Glad I put my headphones on for it. Now to find the live version.
He's classically trained. But saying that doesn't give as much tribute to the control and range he has with all the elements of his voice: timbre, vibrato, etc to his throaty growl. I guess that's why he's with Disturbed.
Agreed - literally EVERY SINGLE TIME !! I love this song so much I've created my ringtone of when he "growls" at "and the people bowed and prayed..." for about 15 seconds from there.
David’s version of Sound of Silence has forever changed my image and understanding of this piece of music. I’ve never been a heavy metal fan but I went looking for more of David’s songs to add to my music collection and I found “Hold on To Your Memories” in the same month that I said goodbye to my mom as well as our beloved 10 year old dog. Disturbed will always have a very special place in my heart as a result. What an amazing vocalist!
My granddaughter ran across this song. And I told her, I loved the original. THEN, I listened to this version and am in AWE! MY favorite version now. This guy has a beautiful voice!
That is exactly what happened to me. My 11 year old grandson told me about it and I replied the same.....I loved the original. I was blown away and still am every time I hear it.
I don't get that myself. Personally I always figured this one was a lot more passionate and goes from morose to triumphant where as the original was fairly monotone throughout the entire song. not the perfect circles cover of Imagine was definitely a case of the original being optimistic "we can change the world", and the cover being "we could have changed the world, but we fucked it up"
The visuals that were put into this video to compliment the lyrics are simply brilliant! It’s presenting this song to us as it’s never been seen before. And David’s voice is an instrument all on its own.
@@lisawatson9570 He did well in the Conan video, but David had a bad cold so his voice was not as it normally is. I prefer this because he isn't sick, and it's his normal voice. :)
I read various ideas of what the lyrics mean and so far I disagree with all. This cover with visuals tells me a story. The sound of silence is when two sides that should complement each other get lost and are separated. The instruments that had been left behind would be able to play the music the voices never share. I see this as a homeless person’s dream, from which he can’t wake, and who knows there is wisdom in all men’s words, even graffiti on tenement halls has meaning. The song begins with the man taking the guitar in search of music, then the timpani joins and by the end, many other musicians follow. Lesson: it only takes one person (and a dream …ok, too corny?) who tries when hope seems lost.
Suffering from panic attacks, sometimes I can't help meself. But every fcking time I am listening to this masterpiece, I feel alive and it helps a lot to cope with all the sh*t around me. Just brilliant. Heartbreaking, bittersweet, and blows you away
Yes! I understand this completely, you can play this song and close your eyes and just escape your inner torment and it just lifts you up in a way thats hard to explain
Living within PTSD/cPTSD, I appreciate any voice that reaches my core and inspires emotional release... this version... ... ... ... ...the tears flow every time I listen to it... every time...
Sorry to hear how you suffer at times, I was wondering if you have heard the song called "UNSTOPPABLE" by Sia very powerful. give it a chance. God bless you.
right? i can listen to the original over and over with no problem, but this version is just so damn visceral and haunting that i cry every single time.
David has one of the most powerfull and dynamic vocals in music today. I think people overlook his incredible vocal control and range because of the genera of music. Considering how long he has been performing Metal for, he has taken exceptional care of his vocal chords and it shows in this cover. It's an amazing cover (possibly the the best of any ) and it blows me away ever time I hear it.
Funny you mention him taking exceptional care of his vocal folds (not "chords") considering he almost lost his ability to sing by damaging his voice through bad technique. He definitely did not take exceptional care of his voice for a long time, but you can bet that he does now after that near career-ending mistake.
So after having watched this video several times through various reactions, I noticed something interesting. While the song is undoubtedly angry that no one has heeded the warning, there's also a moment of extreme sadness and grief. When David sings the line "silence like a cancer grows", the look in his eyes is so profoundly sad... It's such a contrast to the frustration and rage in the rest of the song that it hit me straight in the soul.
The message of the son still hasn't been received. We stand in silence and allow so many things to happen around us and do nothing. We must stand and we much shout as loud as we can and be heard! Xx
I completely agree with you, the absolute sorrow in his facial expressions, combined with the slight sob at the end of the line, moves me to tears every time. What few people mention about the video, though, is the sun rising on the horizon at the end, signifying hope and new beginnings. Masterfully done!
I am 63 years old. This song has been my number one song from the day I first heard it. BUT!!!! This sends chills through me each time I listen to it. BEAUTIFUL! You are spot on with your review.
Have you seen David singing this on Conan O'Brien's show? Fuck man. It's 5 years later but still the best cover of Anything I've ever seen. Just do a search on YT for Disturbed on Conan. Phenomenal!!!
I am 60 years old. The 1st and 2nd and 3rd time I heard it I hated it. I really hate it but now it is one of the most intense songs I've ever heard. I don't know why I was such a bitch about the song in the beginning
David Draiman and Disturbed are known more for heavier rock and the grit in his voice, but David does have classical training as well which you saw on display.
@@jugularstab that’s the beauty of art, something can invoke great emotion in one observer/listener and nothing to another. Let’s not forget that this is one of the best songs ever written and S&G’s harmonies give the song an ethereal quality which is also amazing. I remember when the original came out. Always loved Simon and Garfunkel, but this rendition is the most amazing cover ever. I had chills, tears and am in awe of David Draiman’s vocals.
Bottom line, while I love Paul Simon, THIS is how this song should always have been performed. I have lost track of how many times I have listened to this version and I never fail to get goosebumps.
I remember showing this to my dad a couple of months before he passed away. I remembered we had CDs of simon and garfunkel. when I made him listened to this cover, he just said “wow” and it left him speechless. Indeed his silence was the loudest response
When you have a chance, check out another Disturbed song. Down With The Sickness is one of their more popular tracks. The reason that I say that is that it will reinforce just wide their range is as artists. I'll also add that Paul Simon reached out to David Draiman after the Conan performance to congratulate them on such a great job covering his song.
This has to be the best cover of a song ever! This not only gives me ‘goosebumps’ every time I listen but it brings me to tears with the power of his voice. Absolute brilliance throughout 😊
What a talent to be able to evoke a physical reaction from everyone who hears this version .... everyone gets goosebumps ! The original was an awesome song but this version pure knocks it outta the park
I loved watching you get into this rendition of The Sound of Silence. In my opinion, it blows the original away. Disturbed gave this very dark song the power and depth the lyrics deserved. Props to Simon and Garfunkel, but Disturbed is next level.
I know the original of this song from my parents era but I have never really heard this song until David's cover version and my god it has changed my life. This one song version unlocks almost every emotion in me every time I hear it like very few songs ever can.
It’s a masterful cover that makes me just want to cry. I am a singer, I do teach technique. And u can hear good technique in the first half - it’s all forward in the face. @derp derpin u are willfully hateful to bands that are mainstream, just cuz they are popular, doesnt mean they are automatically bad, it means a lot of people love what they produce, and that the elitists will hate it because of that popularity
I love how it starts and there's no music, they uncover each instrument after it was buried or destroyed and as they uncover an instrument it gets introduced to the song. As more instruments, the human voice (instrument) gets lifted and more confident it gets more powerful. Then by the end every instrument and every human finds their voice in the sound of silence. IMO when the drum come in, that is the best part
I never understood the lyrics before this and it’s a stunning arrangement and vocals from Disturbed which has a sensitivity and power that pulled everything out of this song . Great reaction
I actually never really could get into the original song, as much as I like S&G, I had never managed to listen to it outside of memes. This version actually turned my head and made me actually listen to the lyrics. I would have missed out on such a powerful song, so I'm super grateful to Disturbed for this song. It had me in tears.
I'm 72, from a large musical family and have always liked S&G including the original. Upon hearing the Disturbed rendition ...I popped more than one tear. A brilliant piece!
Simply phonenominal isn't it?! I've heard this dozens of times, but each time, it's like the first. David Drainman brought this home! Along with his team of course. Such a gift to have such a voice.
David Draiman is a trained Cantor singer. He has what's called a vocal Fry, that deep raspy voice. The man is not only talented but very well spoken and intelligent! Love your reaction to this cover!
This might be one of the greatest songs of the last 50 years. (Look at just how many musicians want to comment on it). The original was a beautiful song, but this version has the anger and power that reflects the disappointment in that NOTHING has changed. In fact, things have got worse "People talking without listening, People hearing without listening" ... What better way to describe current Social Media? I'm surprised that not one of the commentators has yet pointed out the ANGER that Draiman expresses here. (That is the Heavy Metal part).

😯 Really?
I get chills everytime he starts his angry singing , every single time. This is one of my all time favorite covers
Same here, and I have played this over and over and over,...
One of the few covers that is better than the original... Or, at least, to me anyways.
One of the greatest covers of all time id wager
Get chills every time I hear this song.
Am exactly the same moves me inside every time I hear this..... Amazing best cover ever for me....
I listened to the original as a kid...50 years later my high school son say's "Dad, check this song out." I was mesmerized and played this over and over and over a hundred times..just powerful, amazing job on a classic that nobody thought could ever be topped.
👍
Music is timeless, this is proof.
The. Very. Same.
Exactly the same thing happened to me. My now 26 year old son had me listen to it. It was on repeat over and over and over. I have cried, but most of all I sing it with him, almost without sound so I can hear his voice - but with all of the emotion behind it.
This song waited since 1964 for the right singer to sing it well done David
This song absolutely broke me. A few minutes after my dad passed away, the phone of someone in the room started playing... He hadn't moved, didn't touch his phone, hadn't been listening to it beforehand, it was inexplicable. We used it as the closing song at his funeral, and the day we spread his ashes we heard it 4 times, twice on the radio and twice in different shops at different times. It's forever attached to my heart xx
@Orsini 47 thank you x
❤️❤️❤️
Blessings and condolences for your loss.
I’m so sorry for your immense loss.
Thank you so much for all your kind words everyone xx
God: so David would you like to have a voice like angel or like demon ??
David: Yes
This has to be the best comment I've ever read LOL

Haha yes! Best comment ever!

Yup
IMO...I don't feel that a better cover has ever been belted out!
I get chills EVERY TIME I listen to that song!!

I do too!!!!
It brings me to tears. Such a powerful interpretation. What a voice.l!
Google ice skating, sound of silence
Discovered it whilst watching ice skating
The best description I've ever heard between the two versions is Simon & Garfunkel issued a warning and Disturbed got angry that no one was listening.
God, I love that.
Exactly! If you listen to both in sequence it is hard not feel depressed all day.
Love your analogy. Mine so far was just a different phase in the reaction process to a problem : Disturbed are stuck at the revolt stage, while S&G are already at the resignation phase. (the usual denial into revolt into acceptance/resignation pattern)
I guess we would all still be in denial :) (which got Disturbed angry and loops into your thoughts ^^ haha)
Gosh, it took me 5 times of reading your comment but I agree
@@yvanazastrasz9013 j
My biggest takeaway from this:
You only paused once. That alone speaks volumes.
Disturbed’s Down with a Sickness
It sure does.
@GerDirkO he said disturb lol
Once is too many.
His comments could have waited until afterwards, so we can see his physical and emotional reactions in "real time".
There are some great bands that came out of the 80s and 90s, then around early 2k, they had to hide their arts for a while as synthetic music took over.
me too !! i,m 70 also . when i tell people Disturbed is now my favorite new group they laugh.
NICE! :)
I am like your Dad, and for 40 years I thought no one could do a S&G cover justice. I am glad Disturbed proved me wrong. First time i heard it I went a little misty eyed.
What gave me goosebumps was that "Paul Simon" said "our version was the warning, your version was the anger that no one heeded the warning!!!!"
No he didn't. Other people claim that, Paul Simon simply says he loves this version.
I'm 70 years old tears in my eyes unbelievable I started saying the F-word constantly couldn't believe what I was hearing and seeing perfect perfect perfect this man is a gift from God
Disturbed is awesome! Check them out.
Glad you enjoyed, brother! Disturbed is a phenomenal band. Highly recommend checking out their catalogue!
Geebz is amazing!
They did a cover on their year 2000 album, also great
I heard a description that was something like this. The original is a warning for people to change their ways before it's too late. The cover is a howl of rage that the warning wasn't heeded.
Beautiful
And to me the moment where that moment becomes obvious is the inflection in the line “in the neon god THEY made!”
That's what Paul Simon said.
Great description
Precisely.
Disturbed usually has a cover on every album. Their cover of “Land of Confusion” by Genesis is a great one.
I approve of their cover of Faith No More's "Midlife Crisis".
Honestly it’s hard to watch their video for it tho cuz the Genesis video is just so insane. I like both versions a lot but audio I have to go with Disturbed.
Love that cover as well. Great energy
@@spongylord7131 Thanks for the info. I am imagining what their cover might sound like and can’t wait to hear it.🤟
Land of Confusion is such a great cover of theirs. Shout 2000 will always be my favorite though!
Crazy thing was I believe he was sick at the time of that as well......shows how tough David is
That performance was amazing, talk about chicken skin.
And he was sick during that show.
I’ve seen disturbed live 5 times and he is studio quality live at every show! It’s crazy
The autotune kills it for me. Dave was passed about it too.

LOL!! My thoughts exactly.
😂👍
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Totally agree 🇬🇧
Old Composer Reacts to Sounds of Silence is an interesting funeral choice.
There is something very special about this version that you can’t put into words
its honest and meaning, its true. the original was artifical, it was ment to be specialyl meaningful, just like a motivational calendar and stayed shallow.
this version however brought in every fiber of the lead singers beeing, a true believer in this message. its not just following a trend in the 60s, its finding meaning in it in todays world
bless you for sending him off with this song. may he continue to rest in peace🥺
Wow, so sorry for your loss…..I’m sure the song stirred a lot of emotions, nice job.
Sry to hear of ur husbands passing but I to know this song and Disturbed did this song justice
David Draiman was taught by a opera singer, so when he does his hard rock or screaming, he will not destroy his vocal chords. So that's why he is such a dam good singer!!
No he was trained as a cantor in Israel because that’s what his grandfather did and he was gonna do the same thing but instead went with disturbed
@@CharlestonWhite-Clips I heard the information straight from the guys mouth!
Perfection.
For the record, stopping this song at ANY point is sacrilegious.

It is often said the original was the warning...and this version the rage that the warning went unheeded
pentatonix has an incredible acapella cover as well
Just a little fact, Disturbed has now made this version of The sound of silence, one of the all time downloaded/played songs to date.
Agree completely and have said the same thing myself.
Agree❤
There would be no Sounds of Silence without Paul Simon. Honor that, just as David/Disturbed did. This isn’t a contest.
Agree- the emotions are there whether you know the words or not!
Simon and Garfunkel, their version off the song has 32 million hits, not bad, this Aussie Band, with official music video, and conan show, over 1 Billion... hits, and it is shit load better..
iirc, simon even loved this cover, and said it captured what they wanted to go for.
@@RagingInsomniac I believe you are correct. It is an amazing cover of the song. Probably the best I've ever heard.
I didn't forget for one second who sang this song. S@G The man singing the "sound of silence" in this version has changed my mind on music its was like the super man of all music, voices, I am speechless.
David Draimen's vocal range is just spectacular, in all his songs, hard rock , or softer.
I agree..considering they are metal...he shows so much control of his vocals effortlessly
Thats why they make the big bucks...I applaud talent in all genres...
Oops typo...lol
Still SG version is better. But this is really excellent.
I think this the best version
I also turned my mom on to this song. She loves it!
It's like Johnny Cash, did the cover of Hurt by NIN and Trent Reznor loves it.
I did the same to my dad. He wasn’t haven’t it at first … then apologized later lol 😂
Played this at my nephews funeral. Two days shy of his 34th birthday. Don’t do drugs or drink people. I miss him everyday.

He's classically trained. But saying that doesn't give as much tribute to the control and range he has with all the elements of his voice: timbre, vibrato, etc to his throaty growl. I guess that's why he's with Disturbed.

Someone said that the original was a warning, and this version is the rage about the warning not heeded
That someone was Paul Simon. As in Simon and Garfunkel.
Best description about this version. I've seen it before and I believe it wholeheartedly.
And the Pentatonix cover expresses hope that the warning might yet be heeded.
I don't get that myself. Personally I always figured this one was a lot more passionate and goes from morose to triumphant where as the original was fairly monotone throughout the entire song.
not the perfect circles cover of Imagine was definitely a case of the original being optimistic "we can change the world", and the cover being "we could have changed the world, but we fucked it up"
Beautifully put.
The visuals that were put into this video to compliment the lyrics are simply brilliant! It’s presenting this song to us as it’s never been seen before. And David’s voice is an instrument all on its own.
I like the Conan video better.

He definitely did not take exceptional care of his voice for a long time, but you can bet that he does now after that near career-ending mistake.
i feel the same away about Jack Black...the guy is GOOD...but he does "weird rock" so people dismiss him....
he is a classically trained opera singer
So after having watched this video several times through various reactions, I noticed something interesting. While the song is undoubtedly angry that no one has heeded the warning, there's also a moment of extreme sadness and grief. When David sings the line "silence like a cancer grows", the look in his eyes is so profoundly sad... It's such a contrast to the frustration and rage in the rest of the song that it hit me straight in the soul.
The message of the son still hasn't been received. We stand in silence and allow so many things to happen around us and do nothing. We must stand and we much shout as loud as we can and be heard! Xx
It is the "stages of grief" he is singing about... or trying to get you to feel even if you can't hear his words.
The original was the warning... This is the consequence.
I completely agree with you, the absolute sorrow in his facial expressions, combined with the slight sob at the end of the line, moves me to tears every time. What few people mention about the video, though, is the sun rising on the horizon at the end, signifying hope and new beginnings. Masterfully done!
Likewise.

David Draiman and Disturbed are known more for heavier rock and the grit in his voice, but David does have classical training as well which you saw on display.
Darkness is another great song to show off his clean vocals.
For metal singers, classical training is imperative. You need the control over your voice to safely do distortion and not damage your vocal chords.
David is trained as a Cantor not classical. His word not mine
@@me0101001000 Classical training is not required to learn healthy distortion
@@foxymacadoo exactly. Classical training does not equal Cantor, nor the other way; they share some techniques is all.
This is without doubt one of the greatest covers ever done. David’s vocals and the way he builds them in this song is absolutely masterful.
I can't agree more. Can any band/singer cover this song again and feel like they elevated it?
Hard disagree. It just sounds like a touched up version of the original. Disturbed didn't do anything to make it their own.
@@jugularstab that’s the beauty of art, something can invoke great emotion in one observer/listener and nothing to another. Let’s not forget that this is one of the best songs ever written and S&G’s harmonies give the song an ethereal quality which is also amazing. So glad I'm not the only that cries. This song is so hauntingly beautiful
Huge A G E E !
I'm 60 and bawl everything listening, am I glad there are more of the 50's and 60's generation that cry listening to this. Thanks for mentioning it 😀
If you do not get goosebumps listening to this song, there is something seriously wrong with you.
The goosebumps from listening to music is called frisson and not everybody can experience it. There's nothing wrong with them, I think it's more that we have something extra.
@@GeekGamer666 no, everybody can and does experience it. They simply get it from different sounds and aesthetics. I've met several people, that while they respected his talent, they did not enjoy this cover at all.
absolutely!!
@@williameldridge9382 I asked someone I know if he ever experienced this (not knowing there was a word for it, I just described it to him). He said he never had, and looked at me like I was bizzare...which he frequently does anyway. He's 68 years old and still hasn't experienced it. So....I don't know if everyone has this or is capable of having it.
@@GeekGamer666 The first time I experienced this was when I was between 9-11 years old. Everytime we had music class we sung a certain song and it always happened at a certain place in this song. I had no idea what was happening to me. But I started to really look forward to singing that song.
It is awesome to see it live when a thousand people just go silent and all you can feel is David Draiman voice vibrate the whole building
I can imagine
Saw em in Raleigh and when they started this song the crowd was screaming in excitement but still making too much noise for how this song needs to be heard so 2 buds and I yelled out for the crowd to shut the f up and 15 seconds later.... silence for everyone to hear the masterpiece
I’m 60 and love this song! By far my favorite version! I get chills every time I hear it. Now I’m a big fan. Amazingly talented!
the Aussie Band now has over 1 Billion Hits ... music video, plus conan show..
The Conan performance is even better. A masterpiece I think.
I'm 80 just heard this song 2 Two day ago and have now watched every reaction vid that I can find this is the best song I think I have ever heard❤❤❤❤❤Love it.......
@@CockatoobirdmanBill I agree Bill! Love it love it love it!
@@CockatoobirdmanBill You will find, Voice Coaches, critiquing the song to get UA-cam hits... and money...
But unlike Taylor Swift, and the Katty Perry, that got 1 Billion views for their songs,
This Australian Band has hit over 1 Billion and growing.. and when played at a funeral...
One of the greatest cover songs ever recorded. When the original writer, Paul Simon, praises your take on his song, you know you've nailed it.
Not "one" of the greatest, THE GREATEST EVER!!!!!!!!!!!
Also Johnny cash hurt
@@cantbearsedmechanics Hurt was definitely one of the greatest ever cover songs.
I'll be 78 in May, and I found this to be an astounding piece of work. TGhank you for introducing this S&G fans of all ages.
I actually cried the first time I heard it. This is one of my all time favorite songs, and to hear this version, somehow touched my soul in such a way, that I felt cleansed of all the hurt and ugliness that’s been trapped and festering. I have never had such a deep connection or reaction to any song in my life. Thanks for your perspective!!! 🙏🏽✌🏽💖
Me too❤️
Ditto...I was sobbing at the end. As a 67 yr. old Grandmother, this version shook me to the core.
Yea Xx
Bella Luna , I too wept. Openly.....

Simon and Garfunkel sang it as a warning.
David Draimen sang it as a reckoning of the warning being ignored.
@@Ontheroxxwithsalt Agreed.
You picked the PERFECT song to start your Disturbed journey with to be able to hear David's beautiful voice so clearly
This particular song shocked us all. It's so raw emotions and hits your feels. You can just feel it. His voice is just awesome.
I remember showing this to my dad a couple of months before he passed away. I remembered we had CDs of simon and garfunkel. when I made him listened to this cover, he just said “wow” and it left him speechless. Indeed his silence was the loudest response
I’m so sorry for your loss but it gives me goose bumps for you to have been able to share this with him!!! I’m so happy you have that with him
When you have a chance, check out another Disturbed song.
Some would argue that Johnny Cash's version of Hurt from NIN is the best cover ever. For me, they are both in my unordered top 5 covers.
What a talent to be able to evoke a physical reaction from everyone who hears this version .... everyone gets goosebumps ! The original was an awesome song but this version pure knocks it outta the park
His voice is phenomenal. This cover is lovely, powerful, haunting and captivating,
Saw disturbed perform this live. I went alone.to the gig, every hair on my body stood up
Wish I could add the videos from when I saw them 2 years ago live in Chicago. Amazing
When i was young i went to over 100 concerts. Now I'm 56 and my friends don't want to go to concerts. So how is it going alone? Is it weird?
I loved watching you get into this rendition of The Sound of Silence. In my opinion, it blows the original away. Disturbed gave this very dark song the power and depth the lyrics deserved. Props to Simon and Garfunkel, but Disturbed is next level.
Another highly underrated Disturbed song is "The Light" - would love to see you check that one out!
Such a great and underrated song!
I definitely agree it is so underrated. Such an amazing song. The video just makes it so much more real.
I would add A Reason To Fight to their most beautiful songs too!
Omg YES
100%, one of my absolute favourite Disturbed tracks.
I know the original of this song from my parents era but I have never really heard this song until David's cover version and my god it has changed my life. This one song version unlocks almost every emotion in me every time I hear it like very few songs ever can.
I loved watching you react. You were in distress, pulling your beard, twitching your fingers, frowning. The song affected you. THAT is a great song.
When someone starts plucking their facial hairs, something is going on deep inside as a reaction...Robert Plant did that hearing Heart play Stairway...
I think this is the most detailed reaction video to Disturbed's "Sound of Silence" that I've heard, and it is spot-on. Thank you for this.
It’s a masterful cover that makes me just want to cry. I am a singer, I do teach technique. And u can hear good technique in the first half - it’s all forward in the face. And he needed nothing to ‘help’ the voice. It’s all about his voice. And it’s beautiful. I adore this. Always gives me goosebumps. #musicislife #Nursey&TheEngineer xx
49 years of voice lessons. This cannot be done better.
The singer is David Draiman, such a powerful voice. Please dive head first into this amazing band. Thanks for this!! Chicken skin all through this even after the 1000th time listening to this cover.
Allllriiiightttt!!!!
@derp derpin u are willfully hateful to bands that are mainstream, just cuz they are popular, doesnt mean they are automatically bad, it means a lot of people love what they produce, and that the elitists will hate it because of that popularity
@derp derpin you must not like The Beatles or Led Zeppelin either because they were too popular. And always played on the mainstream radio.
Everything about this song and video really shows the thought that went into the choices made. Absolute perfection.
Totally agree! I felt so completely overwhelmed when I reacted to it!
They also covered a Genesis song (Land of Confusion), that I think they nailed. They put that one alittle more in their rock/metal wheelhouse.
Love that cover! Absolutely fantastic!
I also enjoyed their Tears for Fears cover of Shout. Incredible band
I'd also say it is a better cover, despite how much mainstream attention Sound of Silence got.
@@CecilMcW00t First Disturbed song I ever heard was Shout2000. Been a fan ever since.
Every time I hear his singing this song. GOOSEBUMPS
Simply phonenominal isn't it?! I've heard this dozens of times, but each time, it's like the first. David Drainman brought this home! Along with his team of course. Such a gift to have such a voice.
I get goose bumps knowing what is coming.
This became a favorite song in one sitting, followed by 800 replays. It always gives me goosebumps and tears. It rolls in like gospel in a storm
Singer is David Draimen. Great metal voice! He was classically trained as a cantor for Jewish temple

👍🏼💪🏽
65 also...and I couldn't agree more!!!
I'm 63 and definitely want this at my funeral great idea
David Draiman is a trained Cantor singer. He has what's called a vocal Fry, that deep raspy voice. The man is not only talented but very well spoken and intelligent! Love your reaction to this cover!
This might be one of the greatest songs of the last 50 years. (Look at just how many musicians want to comment on it).
The original was a beautiful song, but this version has the anger and power that reflects the disappointment in that NOTHING has changed.
In fact, things have got worse
"People talking without listening,
People hearing without listening" ...
What better way to describe current Social Media?
I'm surprised that not one of the commentators has yet pointed out the ANGER that Draiman expresses here.
(That is the Heavy Metal part).
Head to toe goosebumps and chills. Every single time I hear this version. This. THIS is why I fucking love Disturbed.
