You didn't say in the video but did you spray the entire 2nd (glitter) can all at one time, in one coat? If not, did you sand between coats? And what about the 5 final, Triple Thick clear coats - did you sand in between those? Thanks in advance.
I noticed when you said 30 mins. the guitar already had glitter, lol! and the next shot is primer again.
What type of watch were you wearing in this video?
Awesome video I followed your instructions to the letter and it my guitar came out looking factory finished. I wish i could post a pic of it on here. I just bought the candy colors from the other video and I'm going to try that next, i cant wait to get started.
@@jamesthe-doctor8981 ❤❤❤❤❤m
I could stand for that video to be a bit longer. For, I don't know, like...10 minutes. 🤘😂
Ha I almost made the 10 minute mark on this one 👊
Lol... Was going to say... I don't know.... The same thing.
LoL I see what ya did there LoL 🤣
Right 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
“How long will it take you to get here?!?”
“I don’t know ... like ... 10 minutes?”
That finish is EXACTLY what I want for a project guitar I just bought. Looks absolutely amazing!
Doing my drum set with this technique in purple. Can't believe I didn't think about this - The snare looks insane. Excellent 3D thinking man. Thank you so much for the inspiration.
That's awesome man! Thanks for sharing, I'd love to see it, if you have an Instagram shoot me a message, no pressure
This is the kind of how to video we need, but don’t deserve. Straightforward. Easy to follow. Fantastic.
HaHa thank you!
Why don't we deserve it?
Nearly exactly what I was looking for! I just wanted it in gold! Definitely inspired me to do my P bass replica. Thank you
I watched this vid a year ago and finally got around to painting a tele body. Worked perfectly. Just posted your vid in a fB forum as a refernce for anyone wanting a killer budget paint job.
Stunning! Thanks for the tutorial!
This dude knows how to copy and paste very well, and paint too by the way
Thank you so much for this video, man. I wouldn't have had the courage to do this without it. I couldnt be happier with how my guitar turned out.
Nice! I'm so glad it worked out for you, I would love to see it. If you're on Instagram you can find me @iron_gordon
Thanks for the comment!
INCREDIBLE! Great vid and great paint job
KILLER finish. great vid!
5:54 "...and you have a bbbbbbbbeautiful finish on the guitar..."
Great video. I like doing things on the cheap and I'm kind of impatient by nature, so this was just what I needed. I did a partscaster with gold glitter and it came out pretty good for a first shot. The one comment I might make is that the glitter paint spray comes out with more pressure and greater volume than I thought and the first coat was a disaster. I was too close and I gobbed it on. A couple of huge runs and I was done for the day. I had to let it sit, then sand it off, then repaint the base gold and start the glitter all over. Tested my patience big time. The second time I stood about 3 feet away and just dusted the guitar body. Same thing with the clear coat. Stand back and dust. Build slowly. Take like....10 minutes. Thanks
That's awesome man I'm glad it worked out for you! You're right it does come out at a higher volume than you'd expect. I like to tell people to take practice swings first. I'd rather blow a can of paint and re-buy it than spending a day sanding haha!
i like when someone cut through all the different ways and just tell us what to do. I've seen other good videos but this is the method I'm going with. Its enough to have to learn about proper soldering and hookup configurations so if I can cut out any unnecessary steps I will. Thanks for your video man. Guitar looks great!
Thanks Jeffrey! Good luck with yours
Thank you for this video! Just did an older craigs list strat, turned out amazing with some metallic emerald green paint!
I love the cut scenes "you wanna let it dry for...I dunno....10 minutes?"
Ha Ha thanks, yeah look at the guitar in the back ground, its already finished every time.
Great work man! Turned out great. Definitely going to give this a shot on one of my boards!
Awesome thanks for swinging by, good luck with your board projects!
Very helpful video. Fantastic result!
Totally awesome finish applied to that guitar!
What a great tutorial on how to achieve those awesome results for such a great price! We'll have to check back on part 2 in.....we don't know, like maybe 10 minutes? 😁👍👍
Thank you for watching guys! I knew you'd catch on!
So when this guy landed the job of painting Billie Joe's guitar I can imagine how that conversation went . A back and forth of "Ya know " and "Oh i don't know "
Great video, really good work with no steps left out. By far one of the best spray paint tutorials I have seen.
Thanks you so much! I appreciate it
That’s beautiful 😍 !!!
Wow! That's an awesome idea! Looks great :) I'll have to try this one out myself. A lot of my family are musicians so I'll let them all know too :)
Awesome, glad you liked it! Yeah please share this video it helps me out a lot, I have a part 2 for this guitar coming out here in a week or two as well
It's like Billie Joe's one! Looks great
It definitely does. Thank you!
Long Durka it’s beyond me why Gibson doesn’t sell a junior in sparkle silver with a back neck I’d buy it in a heartbeat.
Hi.
It looks like a sparkle big enough to come from a spray can. Love it!!
I have always believed that it was not possible to get a sparkle finish where you can see a lot of glitter from a spray.
Congratulations!!!!!!!!!
I’ve wanted this video for so long. Looks amazing
Awesome, thanks!
Billie joe's sparkle les paul jr. Awesome!!
Say that "10 minute" phrase again and im gonna find you and.... say hello :) hehe gj w paint. Peace
HAHA you had me worried there for a second ✌️👊
Very nice tutorial on making a sometimes daunting task pretty straightforward. Great job and thank you
Probably the best “paint your guitar on the cheap” video I’ve ever seen. Thank you
Love the look of that! Some of the things you did here, I've seen recommendations against. Just to be clear - I am not an expert at all, I have just tried to read up on spray painting this past year so as to not mess up my own projects - so that's where the info below comes from.
The first thing that went against what most people recommend, was sanding with 1000 grit on the primer, before applying the colour coat. Since acrylic lacquer relies on mechanical adhesion, a 1000 grit surface is too smooth for the paint to stick properly over time, and you risk peeling after a year or so. The highest grit I've seen recommended for good adhesion is 400. Some people won't go higher than 220.
When using nitrocellulose lacquer, you don't need to worry about adhesion, because nitrocellulose melts into itself. Acrylic lacquer does not.
The second thing is that you sprayed so many coats within such a short time period. The general rule I've seen is max 6 coats, divided into 2 spraying sessions, over the space of one day. Supposedly, too many coats within too short a time can cause the non-evaporated solvents to get trapped inside the paint job, which will cause imperfections over time.
I hope your job stays awesome. But in case it doesn't, hopefully the above pointers will help for your next job, or for anyone else.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting, I too am not an expert, and all I have to go off of is my own experience, double referencing articles, blogs, and videos on the internet.
Looking back at it now I agree with you, I would have used a higher grit paper between primer and base coat, but only into the 600-800 range. 400 seems a bit aggressive and is still a grit that is used for sanding out imperfections, and had this paint job not had a glitter coat on top of the base coat probably would have shown sanding marks.
Personally, I have heard of breaking up paint session but I believe that working with spray paint, waiting for a few hours to 24 hours between coats would be more likely to cause paint failure. (You would be better off waiting 48 and then scuffing the paint before reapplying.) ideal re-coat times are 10- 20 minutes not exceeding an hour, based on 21°C/70°F - 50% relative humidity.
Trapped solvents would reveal themselves relatively quick while painting, through the paint cracking. I used all acrylic paints in this project and that's where the 10 minute flash off time comes in play, the acrylics I used would still chemically bond with each other as long as you don't exceed the flash off point of about an hour according to the manufacturer. While lacquers need more dry time between coats and can melt chemically into themselves.
You could make an argument for the paint remaining soft when too many coats are applied but once I did let it fully cure before sanding and polishing the paint was hard and crack/ wrinkle free.
I'm not wanting to misleading anyone, (and I'm NOT saying you are accusing me of doing so) I'm just showing how I achieved a killer metal flake finish with economical paint that just about anyone can get a hold of.
All I can do is show people the final results I had. since this guitar has been finished it's been about 6 months and has been on at least one active tour through the greater parts of Mexico with its band and still looks like the day it left my shop...
Thank you for commenting and thank you for your approach with your comment. There is more than one way to skin a cat, or in our case paint a guitar 😁
@@IronGordon Thanks for replying - the proof is always in the pudding, and if the job stays awesome, it looks like you've got a way more convenient way of doing things. I have no horse in the race except wanting to succeed with my projects and do them as efficiently as possible, so I will be following, and hope you'll keep us up to date.
Cheers.
@@meadish I appreciate you being here!
Hey man, thank you so much for sharing your time and knowledge! After I watched this, I stripped apart a tele clone that I have and I repainted it. It wasn't perfect, but the other tele clone I ripped down and did a gold flake on is almost done. It's getting glazed today, and hopefully it comes out well. I wish I had the skill to do the next level job you did, but I'm not there yet. That Virgin Mary guitar paint job is bloody amazing, BTW. I think I may try to do either a jazz master or a les paul jr eventually. One question- can I use something like seafoam green as a base color and then hit it with silver flake, or will the silver overpower it totally?
Anyway, thanks for sharing the knowledge!
I've been searching for new ideas to do on my motorcycle. Thanks for the inspiration Iron Gordon, keep up the great work!
Yeah Ryan, good luck! Send a pic of you do
Awesome job dude!
Still until today, he doesn't know how long to let it dry
wow you have long neck dude.
Word on the street has it that he waits oh...10 minutes.
This video is like. I don't know....Pretty cool.
Hahaha thank you and thanks for noticing subliminal patterns 😆
@@IronGordon I like to research this just for the "I don't know" parts. keep up the awesome work!
@@willstreet5148 Ha I do the same thing, thanks for stopping by!
Dude that was crazy! Well Done!
Nice job and lots of patience
Pretty amazing !! I did a dresser with it and it covered like shit !! Some spots wouldn't even cover no matter how many coats .
Oh dang that sucks... I was concerned about thecoverage as well because this glitter spray paint is essentially a clear coat that has colored glitter in it.
that's why I lay down a base color of the metallic silver to get everything to be a consistent silvertone.
I'm sure you knew all that but I'm just reiterating for anybody who might read this in the future!
Did that glitter coat spray get everywhere because that's why I hate spraying metal flake - it gets everywhere and is so hard to get it all cleaned up so it doesnt effect next paint jobs.
Oh yeah it's everywhere still haha 😅 glitter is the herpes of the craft world
Just what I needed to know - thanks
Awesome job man. Really good spray technique and some solid advice. The final product was sick
Appreciate it!
Lovely job buddy. Looking forward to the next bit .oh disagree with the sticker on your bench I love your channel except for the music but that's because I'm a old bugger. But I'm nearly deaf so not a problem either lol . Cheers mate enjoyed yet again 👍🤘
Ha Ha! music is a tough one to please everyone, but I appreciate your honest David! Thanks for the compliments as usual Amigo!

4:53 - "Letting each coat dry for about..."
*triggered*
"... 10 minutes..."
*relieved*
HAHA that's funny
Awesome! Looks great 👍
It came out awesome !
Thank you!
You know, for how many times you say "I dont know.. Like... 10 mins." You sound so unsure about it lol
Is it wise to trust the previous paint job? I mean, you're not sanding down to the wood but only like half way through the clear coat. How do you know what KIND of paint or clear was on there and whether the new paint and primer will actually play nice and stick? Yes, I see how not sanding it all off will save a lot of time and by extension, money. Just wondering why and when you would not sand all of it off. thx
I was 99% sure it was a factory paint job from Gibson, and they use a nitrocellulose lacquer as a finish. That type of lacquer can be painted over with paint that uses acetone as a thinner.
The Rust-Oleum filler primer I used is an acrylic based with acetone thinner. So that's why I didn't take it to the wood, and regardless of the type of paints that are used, at the very least you would want to sand the old finish to a provide a tooth for the the new paint to grab into. Great question, thanks for asking!
@@IronGordon I checked out rustoleum primer and glitter paint on amazon from your link. 51% 1 star reviews I think on the glitter one. ! So, I am still trying to find a primer that will work. I actually called them and they said there is some Zinsser primer 1 2 3 or something that should work well with either oil or acrylic so I may give that a try but local Walmart didn't stock it. Thanks for the reply!!!
@@TruthSurge Yeah the glitter paint has a tendency to clog, that might be most peoples complaints, I had no issue with any of my cans. But thanks for looking through my links anyway! Good luck with your project!
@@IronGordon ty!
I used two cans on a project and had a little clogging issue, but the glitter is big and the clog wasn't too hard to clear.
Looks great man! Really impressive. Earned my subscription!
Hey I appreciate it!
This video was very helpful to me! I did this very same thing with one of my Gibson Les Paul junior guitars, giving it the silver sparkle paint finish, just like Billie Joe’s ! So thank you for teaching how to do it!
Glad it helped!
I liked how it looked before you painted it.
Then this clearly isn't the video for you Alan.
@@IronGordonlol Clearly.still good video.
2:34 gee, that primer is awfully sparkly!
Haha good eye! You're the only one that's ever brought it up
@@IronGordon really? I assumed there would be at least a couple other comments that the timing clips were just thrown in during edit mode. It happens all the time. You do your best filming then you put it together in edits and go uh..... damn, I didn't get my primer drying shot! oh well, we'll just use the sparkle shot there. :) I am going to try SOMETHING like this soon but I am not sure I'll be getting what I envision. I will do silver then some green and yellow color in poly then more glitter (larger) then try to clear all that and see what happens. ? I will test first on some cardboard and see if the result is ok. I need to write the dry time down so I can know how long between my coats. I have no idea. it's a water based poly I'm buying. thx!
@@TruthSurge You nailed it on the head Truth! the power of editing... your project sound like its going to look awesome, I hope you make a video out of it
@@IronGordon nah, I prob only will show a vid of the final result. I'll have enough problems probably without trying to film it. and plus, too many haters saying I did this wrong or that wrong. haha I ordered some polyurethane (water based) in a can and got some various glitter and also some transtint green and yellow dye. So... I SHOULD be ok but I want to see about spraying the glitter so I need to find out how big my needle is (pause) in my spray gun. It prob needs to be about 1.8 (mm?) but I don't know how to measure mine. I guess I'll have to snoop online and see how to go about finding out the diameter and if I need a bigger needle to shoot the big glitter. I can prob paint with a brush but I think spray will give a better result and thinner coats overall. ty!!
I'm not an expert with spray guns but I have shoved glitter throught a 1.7 needle, and have it work without clogging. I'm excited to see your final project, sounds like a good one!
Sweet! i may have to try this on the next build!
I love flake jobs, and i love the original color of burst also!! So conflicted, great videos!
I took a shot every time you said "ten minutes". I'm pretty buzzed.
Ha! Yeah that's a lot of shots
@@IronGordon there were a lot of comments about that so I hopped on the band wagon, actually, I just thought it was a great video, I do a lot of painting.
Ha that's great! Thanks so.much for watching. Are you posting your paintings anywhere?
Dude! Thank you so much for doing this video. I've been doing a guitar body in Rustoleum Metallic Gold and have been struggling the whole way...by struggling I mean making it up as I go along with varying levels of success. I'm at the clear coat point and I was reading about waxing because I saw how hard it was to maintain the color with sanding. I just did a test yesterday between the glaze you used a clear enamel. The glaze seems to have changed the color the least. I feel like this video totally validated my train of thought on this project. Thanks so much for all the tips in this video and the second part is truly amazing. Great job.
Wow thank you so much for the comment. I'm glad it worked out for you!
How did the glaze change the color? what color where you working with?
Come out great, thanks for the video, planing on doing a custom paint job this way on a minibike project 👍.
Great work but I just don't understand why anyone would want to have the original Les Paul Gibson finish get painted over oh well
You should know Billie Joe Armstrong
I absolutely do not want to know Billie Armstrong and painting over original Gibson's should be criminal! Juniors are meant to be tobacco burst. Now SG's are another story. Any colour than Red or black makes them interesting, check the new Epiphone Muse models.
And let that dry for about, 10 minutes.
Just watched your videos for this guitar. Absolutely awesome job. I am in no way, shape, or form a painter, so I've been doing a lot of research and your videos have been extremely helpful. I plan to paint an Xbox Series S, but I don't want to just slap on a can of black paint. Your videos have giving me some great ideas. My plan is to have the the base color be black, but I want to have a rich metal flake effect, and a hint of purple, or maybe Xbox green, kind of like flashing through the paint as it is viewed it from different angles. (I don't know how to properly explain it.) This is a project I'll complete over the next few months, as I have take time collecting all the various things I'll need (budget constraints), but I'm going to keep watching your videos and learning. When I'm ready to start, I think I might record my process and upload to UA-cam. Anyway, just wanted to say, you're awesome and thanks for sharing your skills.
Thanks for the great tutorial. Mine came out awesome!
Great to hear!
I get ticked when someone gets burrito juice on my guitar!
I know right! Every time!
Hey Iron Gordo! First time long time listener! Who do you think you are?! What gives you the right?! Is it weird that some men pee sitting down? I'm asking for friend. I'll take your response off the air. Thank you. Mr. Worldwide
1. Hi... you almost got my name right
2. Thanks for stopping by!
3. Iron Gordon
4. America
5. No I don't think so, everyone has their reasonings for doing what they do. Peeing is a mostly private matter so if you're more comfortable sitting down to do it, then sit down... I mean your friend should...
6. We are not on the air... Do you think this is radio?
7. Are you calling me Mr. Worldwide? Isn't that Pitbull?
Awesome! Thanks!
Amazing job man just awesome!
Appreciate it thank you!
Gee Mr. Spicoli...I Don't Know..
“Billie Joe Armstrong “ joined the chat
Yeah mine came out a bit sloppy some run here and there but honestly this was the most fun I’ve had in a WHILE. Thank you for this video!
Thank you dude. I want this finish on my Jaguar with a Black sparkle guard. You did a great job!
Curious how the guitar sounded before vs. after (nitro vs. acrylic...) IMO that finishing glaze looks like tone destroyer lol...
What how
I saw Billy Zoom play a Gretsch in similar silver sparkle finish in '82 and his tone destroyed, not the other way around. Brian Setzer has a Gretsch signature model with a green sparkle finish. They're all applied in a similar way. Base primer, color coat, glitter, then thick clear glaze
How to kill a Vintage guitar 😥
Best glitter guitar diy vid on YT
Very nicely done, so with that being said great job !!
Appreciate it thank you!
Beautiful. Love your style of video. Thanks for sharing! : )
Thank you so much for saying that, I put a lot of thought into my videos and I hope it shows!
Dude, killer! You know I love guitars and you CRUSHED it!
Also, your editing, voice-over and sound are so pro...it is a total mystery why this video doesn't have thousands of views. Seriously, this looks better than anything I've ever shot.
Thank you! This is the most time I've ever spent with a guitar, but I do think it is a cool canvas. I was thinking about your video on making guitar bodies and considering making one to do a full blown painting/sign out of.
This video came out about a week later than expected because of the voice over. Iron Gordon not so good at talking proper when microphone in front his face! Hahaha
Thank you for the compliments!
You’ve just changed my entire painting world 🤩🤩🤩🤩

Amazing paint job....I'm considering using this technique....maybe not on an instrument and just for fun but this kind of technique...Thanks for the inspiration!
awesome, this technique translates to just about any thats not flexible, good luck!
I tip my hat to you good Sir. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL results from cans . Thanks for the techniques . Ill definitely be adding a few to my process. KEEP UP THE WORK . SUBBED!
Thank you Bart!
Looks awesome!👍😎🎸🎶
Looks mint, well done
Looks awesome ! About 30+ years ago ,the business I worked for was visited by a Rustoleum representative that gave a slide show of various applications Rustoleum paints were commonly found .. JCB , Caterpillar, his own VW Beetle he had sprayed blue himself using their Hard Hat ,and best of all , a drunk bloke on his stag night , bollock naked ,tied to a lamppost and sprayed Reseda Green 🤭👍
Oh man that's funny! That had to be a pain to clean up hahahaha
I followed the exact procedure. I did not skip the sanding and the Mequiar’s Ultimate Compound. Now I have a gold sparkle Mod Collection Gibson without having to pay a Mod Collection price. Thankyou. 😊
Awesome video. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
