Just wanted to say thank you for your videos on spraying with rattle cans. I just finished my 2009 V6 Honda Accord and watching your video on spraying the 2k clear coat really helped me get a good finish. It took several tries and I finally got it right this past Monday. I had very little paint correction after I finished and using the Buflex, Assilex products, (worth every penny), I am very pleased with the results. I am a 61yo female who has never done this but was fixing previous body shop work that failed so I figured why not try to do it myself. I did it and am quite proud of the job I did. Thanks for giving me the confidence to even try. That is what I got from your videos. Thanks again.
Wow I’m stoked! I’ve got a 69 Bronco I could do after the old paint is gone. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s still going off road. I’d hate to bump an 8G job on a tree.
A hundred years ago, when I was a juvenile delinquent, I repainted a lot of bicycles and I learned that using long sweeping strokes always gave the best results. You couldn't tell my work from the factory paint. This video has convinced me to go ahead and fix and paint over the chips from road rocks on the front of my beloved 2003 Tacoma.. Should be way easier because it's just factory super white. I'm slowly restoring it to what it was when I bought it. I plan on keeping it forever.
I recently bought a low miles 99 Jaguar xj8 that had been sitting in the Nevada sun for maybe 2 to 3 years , the roof and trunk areas got fried ! and decided to give my best shot using "rattle cans" and this video was exactly what I needed as a "how to" guide . I purchased the paint from Spectral paints in Illinois , superb paint match and several cans of Eastwoods 2k clear and it WORKED ! is it perfect no , is it close to a factory finish, oh YES IT IS ! I found many coats of Eastwoods clear was the key to satisfactory results , I also wet sanded and buffed using a D.A sander with a mild compound which produced the desired result , however without this excellent video I would never have got the desired result I was looking for , so one more time thanks ! Scotty.
Now that’s right up my alley! I’ve been doing rattle cans for years . Currently painting my 1984 Ford F-250 two tone black mid panels with silver hood , and top bed rails . Love the look of acrylic over enamel paint . As my grand farther said to me years ago as a boy pour men have pour ways . Yep he was right ... Thank you for doing it my way . DR
Doug Reeves I’ve always been taught, a bad craftsmen or engineer blames his tools, the video proves you can get anything to be great with the right skill
This was an excellent "service" video for all of us that have limit knowledge of professional processes, but still need to continually fix our children's cars... like, all the time. Thank you for making sense out of all the previous unexplained terminology and concepts. Thank You!
yeah, always long pieces of tape. each piece of tape doesn't completely stick / lay flat / seal the gap at the edge of the piece underneath it and you will get color etc that will make it between / under that overlap/ gap .
As an autobody guy, im honestly suprised how good the duplicolor color matches to the existing paint without blending or anything. I still think your better off if you dont have a compressor and need to use a rattle can, find a paint store, or even some napas can mix basecoat and put it in a rattle can for you. And then put the 2k clear over that.
As I understand it, base coat/clear coat paints are kinda weird. First after preparing your area, naturally by covering what you don't want over sprayed, your surface down to bare metal, tack rage it, and spray your primer on the area. After the primer has dried, time to sand down the primer, and apply yet another coat of primer. Sanding each coat down after tack raging them gives the primer and the paint, gives you to that step, adhesion for each coat applied so that the paint will adhere to the prepared surface, this is whare your real, true work begins and is at, as each coat, weather it be primer or paint, they both have to be scratched down,(sanded down) before each additional coat is applied, and naturally, tack ragged to keep the surface clean before applying the very next coat of primer, and or final coats of paint. The final coat of paint looks to be beautifully completed, however, its, not! You have to still scratch the paint down, tack rag it, then spray your final coat of clear coat, which then, brings out the shine and completion of your work. This is why I say base coat/clear coat is weird, as even though each coat appers really beautifully done with a beautiful looking shine, it isn't done at all, as it STILL has to be scratched down, tack ragged once again and the final coat of clear coat then gets applied, which, THEN brings out your final brilliance and shine of your completed work. The only advantage to base coat/clear coat painting is that in two hours or so time, you can actually wax your car or truck, whare as acrylic enamel painting, the process is the same with each primer coat sanded, then the acrylic enamel paint applied , you can't wax your vehicle at all for more than 6 months until the paint is throughly dried. This is why they put painted acrylic enamel painted cars and trucks in a paint booth and afterward "bake"thrm for a time before driving them out onto a delivery truck to be delivered to their individual distribution centers for selling purposes, and also they sit outside in the sunlight to bake them even further to harden the paint even more so before the final selling of the vehicle occurs. .in the end, weather acrylic enamel paint or base coat/clear coat paint, they BOTH end up rusted and rotted through due to certain environmental conditions that exist throughout various parts and areas of the country.
@@ideaoverload910 I am in the UK and found a business online that mixes to your exact paint code. They buy in cans already with the propellant, then mix the paint and use a machine to add the paint to the can through the pipe at the top.
My Grandpa told me a story about when he first painted his car with a Paint Brush and regular paint and then he used vegetable oil to make it shine 😆 i miss you Abuelo And All those great stories
How cool. I've always favored the creative approach.... In the mid 60s, my dad roller painted a 56 Chevy wagon with a gallon of mint green industrial coating used for lining railroad tanker cars He found it on a public dock where he had been fishing. He poured it on the roof, let self flatten and it dried hard and smooth as glass. Came out looking better than anything he ever paid Earl Schieb to do...
I saw a dude in cuba painting an old ford with a paint roller and using some sort of wood varnish as a clear coat and i shit you not it came out amazing... made my vacation absolutely worth it
I love the 2KClear in a can. I repainted my motorcycle with rustoleum rattle cans and coated it with the 2KClear in a can. Amazing results, but in order to get a good paint job, the prep work has to also be just as good if not better than the paint job itself. I also use Sprayaway glass cleaner for prepping and cleaning.
After years of both professional and driveway jobs, I can honestly say that duplicolor stuff is legit. I have never used a rattle can clear coat to the same effect though. It’s a rather temperature and humidity sensitive kind of thing, I have found it best to mix and spray my own, adjusting my mix to suit the atmosphere. That being said, I was blissfully unaware of that stuff from eastwood and am eager to give it a try.
Thank you! This is one of the best tutorials I've seen on UA-cam. You explained everything well and clearly. I got to see exactly how, what techniques, you used to prep and spray the paint. My "rattle can" technique is okay, but you showed me the correct method. I took notes and am prepared for my next spray paint job.
Wow... Spent about an hour looking for a decent video... THIS is the one. Thank you guys. Turned out impeccable, that is a truly professional rattle can spray job. Kudos.
Great, great video man, thank you so much! I have to paint a spoiler and this is EXACTLY what I needed. Clear, no BS or wasting time with jibber jabber. Just a pro making things possible for the average guy with a little mechanical aptitude and some common sense. Awesome !!
It’s heartening to see that good results are possible with a rattle can. DIYing something like this is honestly the appropriate level of effort for a car like the one they used in the video. A CR-V that’s 15 years old wouldn’t be worth putting actual body shop level money into.

While I initially had the same reaction, during the reveal you could see the metallic was different so as he panned around the bottom of the fender behind the tires looked lighter than the door next to it. Of course, that could just be an artifact of the lighting, video and my particular screen combined and it might be easier or harder to see IRL, but it does point out that something is wrong.
I get better and better at my paint jobs thanks to your videos. Especially the movement of the spray can, move it just like a gun, always moving in a steady rhythm with a little overlay. Thank you for all the awesome advice, its really impressive to watch a professional work. Killer paint booth by the way. I wish I could do this for a living
One of my parents friends (an accountant 🙄) did that, he painted his Toyota Cressida with brown house paint and a really cheap brush that left bristles behind in the paint work...looked absolutely terrible!
John O probably because it looked like 💩 poo! And the latex grey above is gross too! There are thousands of colors and the 2 people you guys know picked just blah & barf to paint their vehicles.
First of all thank you for the knowledge conveyed to us hobbyists. Stumbled on your channel a few days ago but spent the last 3 days watching all your videos. WoW what knowledge. I am not a painter but a hobbyist detailer, just doing my own and lots and lots of friends cars. I am 60 years old and been doing detailing for the last 10 years. Seeing paint defects was always my curiosity as to why and now I have a general idea as to the why and how.. Anyway please keep them coming as my thirst for knowledge is still on the high side. I prefer watching your vids than reading in a handbook/magazine. Apologies for the long post but I just want to say thank you from the little island in the Med - Malta and best regards to you Sir.
Brian just want to say thank you for the content. I was able to save my self thousands of dollars with the tips and tricks you have shown here. Saved my truck from rusting out. So thank you.
Those 2004-2008 generation Acura TL wheels look PERFECT on older Hondas. I have them on my wife's 2006 Accord and it completely transformed the car's appearance.
That's amazing.. when I was younger I used to rattle can some of my cars. If you prep it, and spray it properly like you just did, it comes out great. I actually had people ask me a few times who sprayed my cars flat black because it looked decent, and they would laugh when I informed them I did it in my back yard with spray cans LOL.
I remember spraying some engine covers or something with spray can as a teen and when it was fully cured and dry rubbing it out with rubbing compound and then waxing it. It worked pretty good. Long as you put on enough paint.
Painted my friendd rusty truck in highschool with red rustoleum cans. Basic prep and it looked really good afterwards but his dad sprayed on a clear coat with a gun and it looked damn good. People didnt believe it was spray cans
Had a car in 70s I spray canned satin black and my younger brother taped flames pretty good I painted them white then yellow and orange fluorescent it was awesome looking
Thats an issue with the shop I used to work at is that the painter was too good and most of the cars were 15+ years old and couldn't get the 'like new' shine back so he would try and do a worse job so it wasn't so well done that it looked out of place, but well enough that it'd be durable and blend in well. I had him clearcoat my car for the same reason, the hood was done too well though and looked out of place, but the rest blended well
Just bought a 06 Tacoma that saw a lot of sun (no rust!) and the roof and hood are really bleached out. This is just the teaching I need. I’ll be watching it probably 8 more times once it gets warm enough to paint in my un-heated shop. Thanks for the great work y’all.
THANK YOUUUU! I just bought my car and I need to paint the hood and roof. My uncle owns his own autobody shop and was the 1st. to talk smack about me not owning a car but when I asked for help and advice with choosing a car he told me to google it. So now I am on my own with learning how to paint my own car and your video has put me on the right track 😊❤❤❤❤
So much could go wrong when repainting the hood and roof. That is alot of paint, plus depending on the damage, it may just be worth the money to consult with your uncle on what you can do. Spray painting can do alot, but like the start of the video said, for the best quality work, follow OEM recommendation and materials.
That was INSANE. If he had told me the SUV had its fenders repainted with spray cans, I'd immediately say "Bullsh*t!!" (assuming I had never seen the video)
Looks great. In regards to the fan I have placed the can in hot water prior spraying to increase the can pressure, it creates a better atomization, and smoother finish.
My qx4 is harbor blue metallic, and 'Spray max 2k clear glamour' was all i could find after using automotive touchup brand paint and it turned out way better than I thought was possible from rattle cans! All thanks to your videos!
I think much of it is the paint booth, doing it in a garage or outside no matter how good of equipment you have, and also the prep. I would challenge you do this in a DIY setting :) maybe a garage or even outside for experiment
Looks great. Done this on my Ram Truck. I did the whole hood. Sanded off the clear coat that was peeling, but not all the clear was peeling. I sanded back to good clear coat, then primered the area with filler primer and sanded it smooth to the old clear. Used Duplicolor Patriot Blue, was a good match, painted the whole hood. Then used 1K Duplicolor clear DAL1695. wet sanded with 1500 grit. It did need to be polished to shine well. Did not look great like the 2K clear you used until I polished it with a rotary buffer. Never sand metal flake pint, it changes the appearance, only sand and work with clear coat. I am very happy with my paint job for the hood. Have done panel touchups using same technique and the color match is good to the OEM paint. IF you do not shake the can you will change the ratio of flake to paint and screw up the color.
I literally did this a week ago on my red CRV and it turned out beautiful! I did learned a lot more tips from you so im atempting this on my green Honda Accord😊😊
You know a person is a highly skilled pro when they make it look so easy you think you could do it too. A LOT of years of experience are pressing that paint can trigger.
Yeah i thought the same, im a spraypainter i probably would have gone into the next panel but he seems to have nailed it, or is my colour matching just shit😐
I actually did this on my bmw roof. Came out amazing (done it more than once in the past lol) You so have some great tips im going to use for the next project!
I've done a few rattle Rod's. Extremely stressful, especially in the state of FLORIDA.the overspray cures so fast, you have to do very tiny sections. ( Or sand and repaint the entire car ) some colors apply better than others.
I so appreciate this vid. So many DIY paint jobs wind up looking like ass because 1) the DIYer didn't prep the surface and 2) they never used a clearcoat!
I really appreciate how professional you are, how you are helping average ordinary people like myself in trying to get professional results at home, thanks very much 😊.
There's a saying in the photography world that a good photographer with the worst camera will still produce better photos than a bad photographer with the best camera. If this video is any indication, I guess that the same principle holds true in the paint world too. That was a mind-blowingly good paint job 🤘
I know this is an old video, but I have to say, you make it look easy! Great job! I painted the roof of my black Mustang, using this video as a guide, and wow, it's not anywhere near as easy as you make it look! Mine came out "ok", but from now on, I'm leaving auto paint to the pros!
A controlled environment and years of experience makes a big difference in finish. If you're doing this at home, some wet sanding and a good polishing compound afterwards will do wonders.
Looks great and want to try , although I Couldn't help but notice that the booth was used for more than lighting as you said. The exhaust was clearly on thus helping with a potential over spray issue that you will more than likely have. Am I correct in think so?
I found this video after deciding to fix my own car and needing to paint the parts myself. Thanks so much. I needed the confidence and know how and now I have them.
Man, this was a great video. You know, we tend to shy away from cans just because it seems so ... cheap. But you show that you can do some great spot work with one. Thanks for this video.
I just did my first paint project this weekend. It’s in an inconspicuous place so I wasn’t too worried about messing it up but it came out really good (to my eye😊) and your video gave me the confidence to do it. Thanks!
Old expression from the 20th century: “ that was about as exciting as watching paint dry…“ Me watching Paint Society videos like a happy sponge: ☺🙌🍺 Thank you guys so much for putting this together using actual over-the-counter products. It’s truly amazing what a difference a basic rattle canned job can do when your prep and materials are on point. ❤
Thank you for the reassuring comments throughout the video about not worrying how it looks until you've put a few coats on. I did some test patches last night on my car and overall was not happy. I will sand it back and give it another go, this time with more patience. Video was great and informative.
Thank you for giving your audience the diy perspective. I’m new to painting and trying to create a spreadsheet of all materials needed. Would be helpful if you had a pdf or some type of downloadable list .
Dude..........you don't need a spread sheet, PDF or anything else of that fancy teck stuff. Just watch the video enough times to write down, with something old fashioned, like a pencil and paper and make a list of what is needed. Like the man said at the end, "Don't over think it. It's only paint." 😁😁😁 Have a good one. And good luck however you do it !

I use Dupli Color products. I have been painting by rattle can since I was 13 years old. Nothing lays down and leaves a nicer finish from a rattle can than Dupli Color. I touched up my magnetic red 2000 Corvette and no one could spot where I did the touch. Awesome product.
Please never do this, it's very dangerous!!! I used to do this had the idea from a tech article I read in Super Chevy. I had a spray can rupture and it came up out my hand as I was shaking it and took out my left eye. Destroyed it. Something told in the back of my head it was dangerous don't do it, but I said others have it to work . I regret that move til this day.
I'm amazed that the rattle cans can atomize the paint so well compared to having an electric compressor with tons of psi at hand! So, after seeing your work I'm going to do a re-paint on my motorcycle tank. Thanks, Dean Seattle
My issue with those is they maybe only have 75% of the can volume in clearcoat to allow room for the hardener capsule inside. So they run out quick. Also I noticed they tend to lose pressure at about half empty and it affects the finish. The 48hr potlife once activated sucks too. You gotta plan out ahead how much you material are clearcoating so that you have enough that you would use the whole can in 1 go.
After all the years I’ve been seeing your work , I still get impressed how talented you are.. let me know if you want to paint my car for your channel 😬😬....
Wow that looks great. My fender/bumper is going to look awesome. Painted my 81 Toyota pickup with 8 cans of primer and 40 cans of white wish I had cleared it it looked OK for 8 yrs. Thanks for sharing
can someone explain to me what the 2k part stands for? also i used 320 before primer but the auto parts guy said 400 before base and clear is good but i can see the scratches so do you recommend 600 or 800 always before base and clear? also is maroon pad a 320 grit and grey pad 600 grit? im self teaching sorry if annoying.
@@bigshoots1181 definitely go with 600 or 800 wet paper before top coating, if you're using metallic paint do not color sand before top coating with the clear but you can sand it if it's just a straight color.( metallic paint will look blotchy under the clear if you try color sanding it first) after you clear the the paint start with 1200 wet paper and work up to about 3000 grit wet paper before buffing, I would go with 4 coats of clear to be sure you don't sand through it, hope this helps
@@bigshoots1181 2k means the can of paint contains a catalyst, the hardener. it cures significantly faster than 1k paint, which does not have a hardener.
Key takeaway here is patience lol My wife and I are not selling our 4Runner ever but it needs a new rear bumper. Bought one, and we need to paint it. This is great advice. Just want our rig to look presentable but no need to be perfect.
Well that and keep a paper towel with some acetone on it to wipe the nozzle off from time to time. All this is common knowledge but be sure to shake the can and spray it upside down every so often to clean the tip as well
I've found it really helps to take the nozzle off between coats and clean it. Pour a tiny bit of alcohol or whatever solvent into the nozzle inlet. Then blow through the nozzle outlet with compressed air, opposite the normal flow of paint, to clear any build up inside the nozzle. Definitely clean and clear it when you are done using the can for the day.

Tip. Dont use lots of short pieces of tape. Try to use long pieces of tape, it’s much easier to remove later.
good point
Also less opportunity for bleed or tape flying off and landing in fresh paint (this may or may not have happened to me).
yeah, always long pieces of tape. each piece of tape doesn't completely stick / lay flat / seal the gap at the edge of the piece underneath it and you will get color etc that will make it between / under that overlap/ gap .
That only work if you wat to tape a straight line
@@mule666 use smaller width tape and you can make corners and curves without needing to stop or use multiple pieces.
It’s been 9 months since I saw this video, and I still can’t believe how perfect you did it.
Is it okay to spray 2K clear over acrylic base color?
Are you sure that auto parts stores can put paint inside of a rattle can? I thought they come pre made only.
@@ideaoverload910 I am in the UK and found a business online that mixes to your exact paint code. They buy in cans already with the propellant, then mix the paint and use a machine to add the paint to the can through the pipe at the top.

It’s heartening to see that good results are possible with a rattle can. DIYing something like this is honestly the appropriate level of effort for a car like the one they used in the video. A CR-V that’s 15 years old wouldn’t be worth putting actual body shop level money into.

So much could go wrong when repainting the hood and roof. That is alot of paint, plus depending on the damage, it may just be worth the money to consult with your uncle on what you can do. Spray painting can do alot, but like the start of the video said, for the best quality work, follow OEM recommendation and materials.

IF you do not shake the can you will change the ratio of flake to paint and screw up the color.

keep the cans in warm water for a while before spraying.. it will help reduce blobs and orange peal effect
Can’t stand it. Wish I had me a shop and a spray gun
Get quality nozzles with wide beam. They almost never spit. Also always overspray over the edge
Finally! A whole diy video that doesn't randomly end in a shop. Full of pro tools. Ann actually diy.
4:46 muscle memory as if he was holding the air hose while he paints
Lol yea😂
Actually he was holding the cap for the spray can lmao.. I thought so to..
@@djuanstanziola9882 He's holding the cap but look how is left hand is in alignment with his right hand as if he were tracing the movement. That's the invisible hose hahaha
Nice catch
