I think it might work better over another color, like purple or a deep red. This is pretty, but I think it would really *pop* more over something not-black.
I personally think the effect is way too strong. I would go insanely low pigment load, maybe 5 grams of microflake per gallon, and mix in some nice black pearl to darken it, to spread out the flake more, to fully get the galaxy effect. You could try this on a speed shape, just to see how it would look.
I think the initial stick of truth was perfect because it was really spaced out like stars I think the final product it's a little bit too much but still looks pretty cool
Like @loyal twyce said, sumthin you would see on a boat. In fact grainy looking with some views, even though it had a very shiny and sleek surface. I would like to see it done with just one, and again with 2 packets. I kind of think one packet (10 grams) would be Amazing on a black base.
I think it would give more of a space effect if your pigment load wasn't so high. I would have gone with half of what you used. Putting a layer of clear between coats would give a nice depth effect, too.
I think the idea behind the Galaxy theme is to have Negative Space between flakes or Stars… not to have them on top of one another! In my opinion you overdosed the mix!!! 2 bags would of had desired effect of a Galaxy 🌌
Unfortunately it's not really how it works, you can't really mix the fluid and the flakes perfectly unless you fill it up, you would end up with all the flake in the bottom of the paint and the top would be straight paint. It essentially needs to be filled, instead you would have to mix black matt flakes which again may not spread evenly with the holographic ones its luck at that point
Like most everyone else, I think it has too much. I would love to see it on a midnight blue base and I like the suggestion of trying to give it a little more depth by applying a layer of clear between coats. I give it a 3.
From what I've seen on all your top coats is that color change looks good . But they all need to be clear coated in-between to give more depth and a final clear coat to seal the deal .
I was looking for the "V", because as we all know, it's only a holo if it gives you the "V", otherwise it's just a multi-chrome. 😀 But it was right there over the wheels (about 10:19).
3. Had certain expectations too, but I think less flake would have created a nicer effect. Up close it seemed too much. Perhaps a smoother and glossier top coat would have added to the over all effect.
Or do half pigment load, spray, an empty clear load, another half pigment load, and then empty clear again. A darker black base would probably help a little, too - or, as someone else said, purple.
I was telling my boyfriend that this would look good on his 92 caprice wagon. Were in process of getting it ready to paint.but weather here in Washington has become a slow process. Not having indoors . So we watch yall and get color ideas. So far for me this is my favorite 😍. Thank you for all you guys do... 😊
I would be very curious to see this with about one/half the flake that you put in. I think a lower "pixel count" on the flake would leave more black between each flake and would give you more of a galaxy effect. Great video as always - fun and interesting to watch!
Wish I could put a pic of my bike here! Far too much flake which for me is probably where you're loosing the black. Looks OK but not one of your best,sorry.3/5 as its just too busy.
The more flake you add the lighter it makes the paint because you have more reflective surfaces. I think you shouldn’t have added the last 2 bags. It would have given you more dark space in between the flakes giving a better “Galaxy” effect.
I think the pigment load was perfect when it was 20g per gallon and the flake was spaced out more. That being said I *do* like it. I'm a huge fan of things that are "black with a twist" (like Cosmic Black). I'd give it a solid 4 but with a lower pigment load it could totally be a 5.
I agree with other comments about less flake being preferable. Would also like to see it on a dark blue or purple base, or maybe even a black, blue, and purple fade as the base.
I liked the pour of it more than the final product and likely bc it was obviously more glossy when wet versus dry. Either put a glossy layer on top so that sparkle really comes out more or put less pigmet if you intend on keeping it matte.
I think you overloaded it. About half that amount would have been cleaner and clearer. Sometimes less is more. If you could try it over a white or something just on the grey side of white, this could really POP!
As a professional auto painter with 40 years experience I would call it an experiment. The biggest issue is the spray gun that uses old HVLP technologies to spray a car . That type of spray gun came out in the early 1990's that was introduced by 3M. It was a green plastic gun and hose and we called it the garden hose. I tried it once and is sucks. It sprays the paint like a house paint system and globs it on to the panel with out enough atomization to break up the paint into a finer pattern. I painted many street and show cars and motorcycles and would have not let it go looking like that. It needed to be color sanded and at least 2 - 3 coats of clear put on it. Then color sanded and buffed.
I’d give it an 8. I’d love to see this over a deep purple base with about 33% less flake. It’s a prettier end result when there’s more space between the holo flakes. 😊
I definitely have to agree. Having less pigment gives it more room to shine. The way this was applied to the BMW makes it look really busy. Would have this on my car tho 100% bc it's unique
I like that the color effect is subtle from farther away (at least on camera.) That's not a bad thing. I think buried in gloss clear it would look cool.
Dupli color has a clear coat called clear effex and I used it over black paint and for it being a clear coat with galaxy flakes and in a spray paint it looks like it was done by a professional if you apply it correctly
I agree i give it a 3/5 not due to quality only because it didnt match what i expected. Still an awesome color. I can see people enjoying this color even though I felt let down. I think something like metal containers in your garage would be an amazing look. Toolboxes and metal tables. Things of that nature.
I actually like it. It's one of those "stealthy" ones that doesn't really pop at a distance, but once you get close you can see all the color and it looks neat. May look into doing this for my daughter's car since she loves galaxy themes so much.
Maybe if you mixed this with the Venta Black that would get closer to the result on their website, would love to see that. It doesn’t really pop, it has too much, and too dense sparkle. I’d give it a 3
I think half the amount of flake followed by 3 or 4 coats of clear, followed by a cut and buff would look amazing. Maybe it looks different in real life, but on the TV it looks kind of a matte black with sparkles that appear to be grainy like 320 grit paper.
I don't think you will come closer to a galaxy color than musou black and hyper shift pearl video. That was truly epic. Would love more musou videos. Especially one of it driving at night. With or without the hyper shifter
This was the first thing I thought of at the end of this video: What would this look like over musou black? (I'm going to duplicate this comment under the pinned comment above, so don't be surprised if you see it.) Great Minds Think Alike. Maybe I'm a little bit mental, but I kinda want to see this flake mixed with a super-reflective micro-flake... possibly on musou black... not sure what base color would be best. Possibly on top of alien green mixed with glow-in-the-dark pigment powder. But I'm occasionally demented like that.
This reminds me of the Carman Ghia I bought off my Uncle's used car lot. It was mostly purple but the paint shop used the remnants of every color metal flake that they had. There was purple, gold, silver, candy apple red, green, blue and maybe a few others. I loved that car.
I can see that there is a lot of color reflecting off the flake, and overall I like the spectrum of colors its giving off. My question is that if you maybe would have used less, like maybe 1 bag/gallon, allowing the flakes to lay flat on the surface and ultimately not atop each other to give a more uniform color refraction, and then apply more layers for more coverage, then maybe the colors would be more like a color change chameleon effect, as opposed to the full color spectrum reflections at the same time?!?
This would be a 2 for me, solely because the flake is too dense. The thing about galaxies is they're mostly empty space, so the effect you were getting at first where the stir stick was mostly visible was on the right track. You just had to remember that the transparency would be filled by the black base. That said, I don't think I'd have even liked it that much then because it was more colorful than I'd have wanted, but definitely worth the experiment.
Ive watched a few of your shows and i think this galaxy color is cool AF! Best color yet! I paint and the best part of my art, the most therapeutic is creating color. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I agree with what most have said about going with less flakes having more of an appeal than the end result. This makes me think of the texture black sand paper. But it still looks decent.
I wonder what a pigment like this would look like over a galaxy artwork base instead of a pure flat black base. Perhaps even with uneven coatings (as in more focused on the colored parts of the galaxy art base and only sparse "stars" over the rest of the car). I understand it's a lot more work/involved than just an even coating, but just imagine...
Yeah my thoughts too. It would be awesome with a milky way type run over the top. Or even overpainted with something that looks like photos of galaxies. Swirls and stuff. It's an open canvas to me.
I love this, I'm a sucker for rainbows and glitter. I love how it lays out the rainbow properly, instead of having the effect scattered. I do recognize that this effect will be better in person as it's trick to film
Galaxy would look really nice on a motorcycle 😊 oh and it's a 5! I'd like to see less bags used. I'm curious if you could do 1, 2, 3 spray samples. See what each looks like. Beautiful color 😍
I fell like youtube video compression leaves a lot to be desired but still looks pretty cool. Probably way nicer in person. Pigment load unnecessarily high. I enjoy a black car with a hint of flake or shift. But hey, that is what experimentation is all about! Love that you are able to provide this to the community.
if you really want a galaxy look start with the black undertone as dark as you can get it. And then use an almost clear coat with maybe 10 or 20 grams per gallon of that pigment. It will spread out the stars in the night sky and make each twinkle just a little brighter
I think it was a bit overloaded. The 1st test seemed fine to me. Everyone has individual impressions though. Also, would love to see this over a super dark purple or super dark blue.
Definitely a solid 5 for wide color spectrum coverage! As far as going from black to purple not so successful, more like a dark red to thtu purple to a blue. Loved the final product!!!
3. I dont love or hate it. Super subtle compared to my initial expectation of the flake. I think it would be cool in a Chromacoat or in a black cherry or a maroon. But to really pop, maybe do a 50G/Vantablack combo?🤔 And I wonder if the Vanta would eat the flake? (Future projects 🤷♂️)
I would love to see this at nighttime, with city lights, maybe the sparkles comes out better. I mean, i see it with the nailgloss i have, some of it looks better at night with the lights shining over it. Btw, i ❤ sparkles and this combination with the M3, beautiful!🥰
I would have mixed it thinner. I once read a sci-fi story where a ship intended for special operations had, among other things, a top layer of paint meant to be visually indistinguishable from the stars behind it. I was hoping to see that, even the really weak mix of just one bag might have had that effect over the black base.
It looks nice based on the pigment of the flake and has a color of blackish tone to it. I think if you brought in like a pearl that has blue or purple and add a dark cloud of sprinkles on top to darken it up. That kind of be cool.
I'd love to see this over a dark blue or purple base. Could definitely benefit from some clearcoat to give depth and kill the texture, but looks great. Also, why is the roof of the car always masked off when you start spraying? (4/5)
I saw something similar way back in the 80’s, the flake wasn’t as intense as you have. Devilbiss did a special paint cup for the old JGA suction gun, just for painting flake, it had a flapper inside that would agitate the flake, I have a NOS one somewhere. Alternatively, chuck some 3/8 bearings into the bottom of the cup, it helps to stir up the flake like a rattle can.
I absolutely Love this! You mixed it perfectly and it looks fabulous on this car!! Thanks for sharing with everyone and please keep up the incredible work!!!
On a vehicle not really for me but on a boat I think it would be awesome. That is the look I was picturing for my old jet boat that I sold b4 restoring it.
3 points for the coloring of the flake, but I personally think it would look better with half of what you used. I might actually use some of this on one of my harleys, but I'll spray it over a cobalt blue (or a little darker) base. Thanks
Rating it 5 because I've already sprayed my truck this same before seeing the video and yes I still like it the good part about the holographic flake is you still get that effect over other colors better than most I think when not doing full cover love your channel btw I've gotten and used a lot of ideas from you guys
Should have stopped at bag #5. Still looks good, probably would have come out better on a charcoal gray base, but that's why you do this, not only for the entertainment but also as a way of learning. I give it a solid 3
Alittle heavy on the pigment load I’ll give it a solid 2 compared to others you’ve done I think this would go great as a wheel or trim on a black 4.0 car with maybe some accent graphic designs
I like 3.5 as is... I agree it needs another clear coat. I think you could go with less and it would be a lot more palatable. It would work on a ski boat as is...
I'm doing a knock down ceiling texture like that galaxy in one of my bedrooms and an opal gemstone knock down texture in one of my living rooms. Thank you for sharing with us 🏴☠️
I vote a 3. Like some other comments say, the consistency of the flakes is very high and a bit to much. But the pigment itself self is very nice. Would be nicer if the black was darker like you had mentioned. The website picture of the black would have been GREAT
Nicely done guys! Pros. But yeah (2) 10oz would be the max on pigment. The translucent flakes are a little much on the eyes. Looks like a 1 acre live concert (view from the GoodYear BLIMP) with all the little heads bouncing around. Looks like that.
Put a marble in your cup , that keeps everything mixed as you spray that takes care of that problem! Now what I would do is blook it out with 1000 grit wet or dry paper then buff % polish it, then hand rub it to glass finish!
*Had huge expectations for this one, your thoughts?*
Looks ok a little to busy maybe less load might look like a starry night give it a 3.5 -4
I was surprisingly underwhelmed.
4 / Very cool...for the person (like me) who can never make their mind up on color(s). Little too textured for my liking, but nicely done as always.
I think the initial stick of truth was perfect because it was really spaced out like stars I think the final product it's a little bit too much but still looks pretty cool
I agree. They oversaturated the hell out of it which made it look like a color overload coming from the flake on the end product.
It looks like bass boat paint
Agreed.
Like @loyal twyce said, sumthin you would see on a boat. In fact grainy looking with some views, even though it had a very shiny and sleek surface.
I would like to see it done with just one, and again with 2 packets. I kind of think one packet (10 grams) would be Amazing on a black base.
Definitely over saturated. Cut it by 60-70% and it would be perfect.
If it had a high gloss over it it would look beyond amazing. The almost matte look does it no favors.
Yep, matte always kills the holo effect. But obviously he doesn't know much about holo if he doesn't know that it comes in a whole range of colours.
That just enhances the orange peel...
I want it to look wet as well
agreed
😮🙈 like that❗️ Glad its not my car. 🫤😳 Paint job looks 👀 unfinished
I think it would give more of a space effect if your pigment load wasn't so high. I would have gone with half of what you used. Putting a layer of clear between coats would give a nice depth effect, too.
or doing sections of the car with denser pigment load.
Even less than half. I bet 2 bags would have been plenty.
It's more suited to a wheel rather than the whole car i prefer the hypershift on the paintwork than a flake
@@mackinmall Maybe that soap technique to help create the streaks and such found in galactic super-cluster structures, or the clouds of nebulae...?

2 points. I'm not a fan of the final result but the mixing and pouring looked mesmerizing.
It looks like a fair ride

I love that we get a "Gabe Cam" now. The back and forth was what this channel was missing for sure 😁👍
I have always loved the videos but this is surely a great addition!
I prefer less glitter. I liked the first stick of truth. Dispite of so many layers of clear the flake is still showing texture. I would rate it 3
That was totally my suggestion! 😂🤚

💯 Looks like a pig with too much 💋!

3. Had certain expectations too, but I think less flake would have created a nicer effect. Up close it seemed too much. Perhaps a smoother and glossier top coat would have added to the over all effect.
Was thinking the exact same thing.
Or do half pigment load, spray, an empty clear load, another half pigment load, and then empty clear again. A darker black base would probably help a little, too - or, as someone else said, purple.
Needs to be glossy if you have that much glitter or use less and keep matte. I would love to see you do something similar with a pearlescent look

I would be very curious to see this with about one/half the flake that you put in. I think a lower "pixel count" on the flake would leave more black between each flake and would give you more of a galaxy effect.
Great video as always - fun and interesting to watch!
Agreed, my first thought when I saw the finished car.
Agree too I felt this was one of those rare times less is more
This reminds me of the glitter gel coat finish on ‘80’s speedboats. I kinda like it, but definitely could’ve used less flake.
Wish I could put a pic of my bike here! Far too much flake which for me is probably where you're loosing the black. Looks OK but not one of your best,sorry.3/5 as its just too busy.
1/2*
The more flake you add the lighter it makes the paint because you have more reflective surfaces.
I think you shouldn’t have added the last 2 bags. It would have given you more dark space in between the flakes giving a better “Galaxy” effect.

I think less sparkle would be better. Probably looks much better in person though
I agree with other comments about less flake being preferable. Would also like to see it on a dark blue or purple base, or maybe even a black, blue, and purple fade as the base.
If it was wet, sanded, and then clear over it, I think it would look great! Just looks a little rough on surface texture otherwise.
completely agree
Exactly, I'm an old retired body and paint guy. I wet sanded and buffed everything. Keeping surface texture in mind.
i agree
I liked the pour of it more than the final product and likely bc it was obviously more glossy when wet versus dry. Either put a glossy layer on top so that sparkle really comes out more or put less pigmet if you intend on keeping it matte.
This is the most beautiful paint that I've seen on your podcasts.

It looks nice based on the pigment of the flake and has a color of blackish tone to it. I think if you brought in like a pearl that has blue or purple and add a dark cloud of sprinkles on top to darken it up. That kind of be cool.
This would be awesome on last week's dark purple color. 🤩🤩🤩
I was thinking the same thing!
I'd love to see this over a dark blue or purple base. Could definitely benefit from some clearcoat to give depth and kill the texture, but looks great. Also, why is the roof of the car always masked off when you start spraying? (4/5)
4. I like the subtle effect of this one. Certain angles the car just looks black, but then you catch the glimmer of colours from the flake. Nice.
I did the same on my snowmobile, build up pure clear on top, sanded 800-1200-2000-3000 and polished. Completely different. Like diamonds.
SIIIIIICCCKKKKK 😍🔥😎 you have like the coolest job ever lol
First car paint I've ever seen that had texture you felt you could touch, and feel.
I think this with a midnight blue undercoat would look amazing. Def looks better upclose then from a distance. So 5 for upclose, 2 for distance.
Definitely a 5 it looks amazing. I love the shimmer and it is an amazing holographic.
That is still super wicked. Though definitely would like to see a lower density of it over a darker black
I still love the video where you painted the car in musou black with the hypershift top coat. That was an epic result in the end 👌
5.Gotta say..probably watched 20 or so of your vids and this is my favorite.
I do agree on going with 1/2 the pigment load, tho. Would love to see that as a finished product, maybe on a bike.
You accomplished the effect you wanted. Looks great
Almost gives a truck bed liner feel when it hits a certain angle ..
Dope af, only suggestion is have a popping base color the black dulls it's potential
Beautiful! If I still had my XKE I'd want it to look like that.
2.5 - I feel middlish about it. Could've been worse. Thanks again for sharing.
I bet that a black sports car with just racing stripes across the hood, top, trunk..and (maybe) the rims in that paint would look incredible.
Should have stopped at bag #5. Still looks good, probably would have come out better on a charcoal gray base, but that's why you do this, not only for the entertainment but also as a way of learning. I give it a solid 3
When laying flakes, you gotta lay on the clear coats to really make it pop... that's why you can see bass boats a mile or two away...
my opinion, a 2-3. I would have put on a few more coats of clear to give it a more smooth texture free look.
Oh man I had REAL high hopes. If the black was closer to vanta black it would be AMAZING.
I think it turned out really awesome!
I wonder what that would look like under emerald green or a dark purple base
I'm doing a knock down ceiling texture like that galaxy in one of my bedrooms and an opal gemstone knock down texture in one of my living rooms. Thank you for sharing with us 🏴☠️
Verry nice! I'd say a 4...it's really an eyeful of color!!!
I vote a 3. Like some other comments say, the consistency of the flakes is very high and a bit to much. But the pigment itself self is very nice. Would be nicer if the black was darker like you had mentioned. The website picture of the black would have been GREAT
End result looks like Australian black opal. Beautiful job!
Now what I would do is blook it out with 1000 grit wet or dry paper then buff % polish it, then hand rub it to glass finish!
not bad for something spread over a thin surface layer rather than used suspended in a gel/acrylic 3-6mm thick
From afar meh. Up close LOVE IT. It’s like a Fire Opal! Man i wish I knew of this when I had a car.
