@@DallasStewartMusic I don’t know why I’m just seeing this video now. Two years later, but I’m an expert when it comes to painting guitars. One thing that I can tell you, even though your guitar looks gorgeous!, Is that you went through way too much effort removing the paint. You don’t have to remove all of the paint. All you have to do is Sand down the clear coat that’s on the guitar enough so that you create a bond able surface, so the primer and the paint that you put over it will stick. That is why you had and issue with the wood grain. If it was a brand new body, he would’ve had to put either epoxy or a good wood sealer over the wood to keep the grain from coming through the primer or paint.
@@TarynnElizabeth619 yeah if I were to do it again I would have definitely used sealer. Either way I didn’t need to go all the way down to bare wood, a mistake looking back for sure
All the mistakes you make are what makes this video so damn good. It totally highlights the pitfalls and really helps show you how to do something right. Thank you.
I would have just embraced those headstock flakes. Even add more just to make it "intended" lol. Awesome job! Props for the Satin neck. Totally went into this with crash & burn vibes, came out feeling confident in my own endeavors, thanks for the in depth video. Turned out great!
Dallas! This video was such a ride! Congratulations on sticking it out and doing a great job. I almost jumped out the window when i daw you carve up the original paint. Thaks for sharing
There were definitely a few hairy moments along the way but the final product looked awesome! I'm in the middle of doing an Ibanez in Silver Sparkle atm. I've lost momentum hand sanding back to bare wood and its been in pieces for something ridiculous like 9 years. This is the type of video I needed to inspire me to just get stuck in, make mistakes, fix and learn as I go.
Damn dude! That’s the coolest guitar I’ve ever seen! You did some amazing work my friend. I bet if John watched this he would be super happy with what you have done and made this your own. Brilliant.
Looks absolutely amazing!! Love that finish!! You'd have avoided the grain issue on the first attempt if you hadn't removed the original grain filler. Paul says that how they do it now is true to how Fender did it back in the mid 60's anyway.
Tip. Cover the body well with primer. Then let it dry and sand down. Then go over it again with an even coat of primer following it up with ur basecoat, flake and topcoat. This way the primer will work as a filler for the grain and will create an even surface. P.s beautiful done though! Love the finish!!
Very interesting video and great results! I have similar shade of green PRS S2 but without the metallic flake and it looks a bit dull… Changing the color is not going to work because of matching headstock, but adding a sparkle/flake lacquer might actually work!
@@DallasStewartMusic NO NOT THAT 😭 Now that I read it again I think my sentence really sounded wrong, my bad LMAO (anyway can't stop thinking about this silver sky it's too good)
To be honest your finish is better than the factory one. I have a dodgem blue silversky and I can see the grain through the finish. Pretty sweet man. You are patient as hell too.
That’s beautiful. I love the silver sky. The only thing I don’t like is the finish and the bleach white plastics/ new chrome hardware. You did an amazing job, wish I had the patience to turn the silver sky into a nitro sunburst with aged mint green plastic
I love the look on those tuners. This looks so cool... I do wonder if you went a little thick/oversprayed clear coat on the headstock. It looks a little wet rather than glossy.
Thanks! Yeah the headstock is a bit uneven, we didn't sand it very much before going straight to buffung. Honestly I liked the look and rolled with it. I've seen fender custom shops that have that look.
Vers cool resultat, but curious as to why you decided to strip to bare wood, if the underlying finish is as good as the one you had, you could have scuffed and painted over it. That would have given you a smooth base, with the grain already covered. It came out great, but you could have saved yourself some work. That’s what Fender did in the old days, ie custom colour over the sunburst.
I think it came out looking really nice. You probably could have saved some materials by resprayed a sanding sealer after you got down to bare wood. It keeps the wood from soaking the finish. I painted a few guitars with that same clear and I usually get two or three bodies out of a quart. Adding the flake I'm sure also added to the need for more clear to bury the finish. I commend you on your courage to take on such a project on an expensive guitar.
If I did it over I certainly would have used a sealer, and yeah we checked after every layer of clear to see if we got enough coverage over the flake, took a lot of coats!
I have a gretsch guitar I wanna do a silver sparkle on, do you have to sand it to bare wood? Or can you lightly sand then spray like a matte black base coat then your silver then the glitter coat? Your guitar turned out great 👍
Do you find that the heat gun would burn the glue joints. And have glue bubbling out a little bit. I had that problem trying to remove polyurethane from a MIM strat.
Be very careful using the heat gun and glue joints won't be a problem. You have to not stay in one spot for more than a few seconds, and keep a good 12-18 inches from the guitar.
@@DallasStewartMusic How much would you charge? I'm seriously interested. I have a polar blue silver sky. Not sure what color i'd want but probably the same as yours. I mean, I'd probably offer about $500-800 if you were interested. Negotiable though.
Went into this thinking it was insane... but you really pulled it off man. Very tastefully done. I've considered doing this to a different guitar but was unsure about investing in a spray gun. Do you think cans would have been fine for the entire project? Did you just use a gun because you wanted sparkle and needed to mix?
Spray gun opens the door up to so many more color and finish styles (like sparkle), but if you can find a color you like in a lacquer spray it should go on great! StewMac has a few color choice I think, might be worth checking out. Of course you could probably use any generic lacquer spray, not specifically ones made just for guitars like StewMac. Good luck!
That’s because the silver sky core model isn’t a poly finish. It’s a nitro, the se version is a poly though. So unless you had a se body it was already nitro
5:00 Second mistake: never mix a pearl into your carrier. You always want to mix it first into a solvent. If it were a polyurethane 2-stage finish you'd first mix it into the reducer, but since this is a nitrocellulose finish you'd first want to mix it into a quality lacquer like Cardinal and not that crap from Lowes
2:00 First mistake: removing the polyurethane. There is no need to remove it. By removing it all you did was give yourself more work as now you had to seal it. All you had to do was prep with 600 as the factory finish would have worked as your sealer.
Great job man, shame about the pickup covers, arguably looks better with the white anyway! the 2020 silvers sky are nitro painted bodies Lots of info about it and confirmed by PRS on the official silver sky thread on the PRS Forum! Thats probably why it was really easy to get off compared to the poly squire :)
Great video! What year is your silver sky? I’ve heard that PRS recently switched to nitro finishes, so that’s why your paint job on the guitar was easier to take off.
Had you have left the original sanding sealer on it, you wouldn't have had so many problems. There's no need to go to Burwood if you're going to put a solid color over the top of it which was your white base coat
1.-You are out of your mind.
2.-It turned out great, it looks incredible.

Yes! But the ratio on them is super harsh, I probably would have kept the stock tuners even though they don’t look as nice!
