That flake is surfy! Chris' band! When I first saw the silver flake Tele that Don Rich played on Buck Owens tv show in the 60s, I bought some testers model car candy apple red metal flake and painted a Apollo guitar I had. 2 coats is all I could get out of the tiny can, still it was gorgeous! This was as good as it gets to show how to do flake! Thanxz

Frikkin' A-1 beautiful! Metal flake is the coolest.
Now it needs to be played through a big-ass tuck N roll Kustom using a curly cord. :)
I've mixed many a metallic, we used a mica that was stored in 1/2 or 3/4 pint (didn't pay much attention to the container size) squeeze bottles with the little flip nozzles like you see on consumer wax bottles.
We just tipped the bottle upside down and tap it lightly with the nozzle open to let out enough mica powder for the mix (measured by weight), but for heavy gallon mixes (Ford Toreador Red most commonly) you could actually give the bottle a few squeezes, just don't inhale much while you're doing that! :)
I kinda liked mixing paint, but I never applied any, Im happy to leave that stuff to pros, like you guys.

    • @TexasToastGuitars

If you sprayed a lot of flake you should consider a separate room so as not to contaminate every subsequent paint job

Not sure if it's needed is todays urethane paints but I remember the 'ol timers dropping a couple glass marbles in their paint cups to help keep the metal flake suspended and agitated in the gun. Supposedly it kept the flake from laying out too flat or uneven in the finish? Of course that was with the old bottom feed Binks guns of the day. No clue if the HVLP guns are any better in this regard.

    • @TexasToastGuitars

Yes, it would be much appreciated, and worth a beer on me whenever I get out to that part of the country (or if NAMM goes back to an in person event), if you made a video giving detailed descriptions of all the types of products, and a wide variety of examples of the better products made by different companies, used at each step, utilizing a few different processes (I'm assuming you employ a few different processes to achieve different results), in finishing guitars and basses (drum shells, too, probably).
I have a decent small gun for details, bursts, fades, etc., and a cheaper HTE gun that I'm told works great. I used my laboratory clean room experience to build a "paint booth" out of plastic tarps, with filtered fans for inflow and outflow, above my garage. The best part was getting a buffing tool, similar to yours, in an auction for ONE DOLLAR! I have beautiful buffing wheels from a German company that located one of their new facilities near us.

Is that metalflake finish aluminum flake or pearlescent powder? Most original metalflake finishes were aluminum powders but as they only come in a small amount of finishes and sizes most cars are now coated with pearlescent powders. They offer a wider range of colors and also the color changing technology that you used on this guitar.

Black should always be used for metal flake. It causes an illusion and cast baby shadows on the silver metal flake making it look like its dancing and sparkling... It highlights and lowlights the light and heavy sides of the flake. It is what it is lol🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😂❤❤😂😂😂

We’re all probably yawning less since we can’t see other people yawning with their masks on.

What does a paint job like this cost?

      @TexasToastGuitars  3 роки тому

Oh, don't know... it gets rolled into the overall cost of the guitar. We no longer offer paint work for other makers or do refinish work.

You don't have to explain to your wife why you're covered with glitter. IT'S NOT GLITTER! It's metal flake.

Did "metal flake day" just happen to coinside with the end of the life of the spray gun and booth filters, or does it infiltrate a gun so bad that you end up with a "metal flake gun"?

You can clean it but it isn't always a bad idea to just toss it if you are getting to the end of the life cycle
