I don't think I've ever seen someone double-dip the paint before. That really creates a nice "ghost flame" effect where it looks like the swirls are interacting, but remain distinct from each other. I've long been planning to do this with one of my guitars, and I may have to steal that idea...
Yeah, when he said he was gonna double dip it, I was like... er, I'm pretty sure you're about to regret that. But, then it came out looking amazing. I did not expect the layered, deep look. Really looks fantastic.
Might be the best sponsored portion of a video I’ve seen. You made the ad a part of the building process, which was awesome. I didn’t want to skip it for once
Agree! Usually it’s “Today we’re building a brick wall….speaking of brick walls….I love gluten free pasta from…” 😂 This was actually useful for the project ☺️
This is awesome! I’m about to buy my daughter’s first guitar and we decided to get a kit so we could build it together. We’ve been talking about colors and design, and I wanted to do something special for it. I think this method would be perfect! Thank you for the inspiration!
Just a tip! Before masking, make shure the paint had already cure (dryed for more then 17hours) and before applying the masking tape, stick it first on your t-shirt or pants, this will add cotton fibers to the tape and make the glue weaker, that way it wont stick to much to the paint avoid this type of situations ;) Nice video man,and it ended looking pretty good!
The simple fact that you're able to play a good tune on a guitar you built has got to be among the most gratifying experiences you'll have in the realm of music. Excellent. My wife and I watched your video, and we are nothing short of amazed. We have gleaned some great ideas from your artistry.
The matching headstock really works well… Fender Japan did an Japanese artists model with a painted white maple fretboard and neck (it was like a ghost guitar)… so it could be possible to do the entire guitar as a hydro-dip
My favourite part of your vids is when you play the guitar at the end and this guitar is probably one of my favorites, the colors look so beautiful together and it looks really unique with the two layers of the hydro dip and that song you played at the end was even more beautiful. 😁❤️
That neck turned out absolutely amazing! Love the body design as well. It reminds me a bit of those super colorful 70s era furniture and decoration designs.
I swear to god I work at guitar center this is by far one of the sickest guitars I’ve ever seen. Matching headstock, flamed neck, practical and stylish body shape, sounds amazing, holy crap! The colors are so beautiful
I have dipped a dozen or so guitars and I was reasonably happy the way they turned out. Any screw holes need to be blown out with air or sealed to keep water out of the holes and swelling the wood.
That looks so dope!! I thoroughly enjoy your videos, and your voice overs are an added touch. You’re extremely talented art wise, and musically. Keep it up!!
Thank you for showing how to properly dip a guitar instead of the usual spraying paint into water with an aerosol can. After knowing about this method for quite a while and being in commercial art for over 30 years plus working at Gibson guitar in Nashville, this whole thing about hydro dipping drove me crazy when I saw people starting to use the spray paint instead of actually dripping or pouring paint into the water. If anybody tries one versus the other it's a world of difference when you do it properly. Keep up the wonderful work. Thank you!
When you sanded the first guitar my oldest son was SO upset and I thought it looked cool too but then when we saw the finished one we both agreed that it was SOOO much better. I also had wanted to see blue and white so it was nice to see the practice. Great video so much fun.
Never ceases to amaze me with the work you do on these guitars. Some mistakes along the way, but it's worth watching to see the end product. Keep up the good work, man.
yes, and he takes the mistakes in stride..the difference between guitar builders and guitar builder wannabees is that the former learns how to fix, mask, or otherwise turn their mistakes into a meaningful part of the project.
Well that's a very interesting technique as I have never heard of hydro-dip before. If you like that look, it turned out great! Nice playing as usual......... 👍👍🎸🎸
I wanted to do a black and silver swirl but metallic paints don't float really well. I ended up doing a black base and then dribbling Testors black and silver paints onto the face and then blowing it around over the face of the bass with a straw. Came out really cool and allowed me to use color I couldn't hydro dip. You do have to be careful of bubbles forming from the blowing (heat gun or blow dryer to pop like with epoxy). This process opens up to the use of MANY more colors since hydro dipping can be limiting. It is trickier to get all sides painted though. However, you can "target" areas to filling the effect once you know what you are doing.
Submerge the guitar first BEFORE you put the paint in the water ! Then lift the guitar up in a horizontal position and allow the paint wrap itself around the body from top to bottom. I did this 30 years ago and nailed the marble effect first go.
Nice video. Truth be told, I prefer the original look at 3:51. The white is "negative space" which causes the eye to look at the pattern, yet provides a relief to the movement of the pattern. But to each their own. Final project looked sharp. Thanks for the video!
i found the first attempt with the little splotches looked the best. it had so many little details. all subsequent dips were the dime a dozen big wavy looks
I had the idea of doing a dip in paint floating on water 20 years ago and suspected borax would enable the idea to work. I looked into it and sure enough, some people had within months achieved the ]idea, made theirs and borax was the key. *The results were more or less the same effect you achieved and you produce some absolutely beautiful guitars regularly.*
Awesome!! How much clear did you spray, and what product? Hope you can answer, cause I know you’re always busy!! I may have to try this method on one of my builds💥👍🤙
That neck goes so well with that guitar, also love the darker swirl on the top middle of the body, it has a 3d smoke effect about it. A stunning guitar it has layers and sounds sweet🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
We actually did the same painting method in kindergarten to paint class jars . Of course we had the guidance of our teacher. If a five year old can do it, anyone can.
I've had a go at this, Called it Marbling. A bit harder for me as i am in UK and a bit colder while watching videos from Cali :D I did the foolish thing if TRYING to push the guitar body in with my hand .. NB WOOD FLOATS WELL! and had to use a LOT of Force to get it under.
Preferred it before the second dip TBH. If you don't like so much white, would be interested to see what would happen with a base coat of another colour, and put some white paint in the dip
I liked the first dip with the white space, although I also thought the double dip was really cool as well. Thus while in some respects you have great instincts, don't be afraid of white space, it has character of its own!
A tricked I learned with soft paint and tape. If you take the tape and kill it, meaning take the tape and put it on your shirt a few times and then apply it to the project, you should be good when it comes to paint pealing off. I did this on my Camaro that I just had sprayed and it worked great!
on the first dip the motion paused, creating a band..... usually it's a gentle fluid motion people use, that doesn't pause . the technique is in a gentle smooth descent
Damn this came out so nice! I absolutely love that flamed maple soo much!! Looks like a neck that came from ernie ball great job!! The double dip was a great idea as well! One of the most beautiful necks I’ve ever seen!
The idea of painting is not new, but it looks very impressive. No guitar color will be similar to the previous one. Each one will be unique and unrepeatable.

It gives it this crazy look of depth that's so cool!
Yeah, when he said he was gonna double dip it, I was like... er, I'm pretty sure you're about to regret that.
But, then it came out looking amazing. I did not expect the layered, deep look. Really looks fantastic.
so cool
Exactly
If you like clown a casters ya.
Could always make a small metal pickguard to cover the mistake. Looks great
Even black ply , but for sure
Yup great idea.
The best solution right here. Surprised he didnt go for it
I was about to write the same comment. Also, a pickguard would nicely help to bring the 2 dips together.
Might be the best sponsored portion of a video I’ve seen. You made the ad a part of the building process, which was awesome. I didn’t want to skip it for once
Same here! I always wondered where I could get something like that!
Agree! Usually it’s “Today we’re building a brick wall….speaking of brick walls….I love gluten free pasta from…” 😂

That’s so cool, any update on how it went?
You sound like a fantastic dad 👍👍
Just a tip! Before masking, make shure the paint had already cure (dryed for more then 17hours) and before applying the masking tape, stick it first on your t-shirt or pants, this will add cotton fibers to the tape and make the glue weaker, that way it wont stick to much to the paint avoid this type of situations ;)
Nice video man,and it ended looking pretty good!
Sanding the primer to key it seems vital too.
Great work, man! Two times was crazy, but awesome!
Did you use "borax"? Some people say they use it.
@@AmistaddeTepeacaAre you talking about Burls Art? I don’t think he used borax.

I really like the second dip the translucent overlapping patters look really cool
The matching headstock really works well… Fender Japan did an Japanese artists model with a painted white maple fretboard and neck (it was like a ghost guitar)… so it could be possible to do the entire guitar as a hydro-dip
The silent siren one?
Not only do I like the design but it sounds like your guitar playing has also gotten even better very smooth sound love it

Skip to 00:57 for the finished product. You’re welcome.
This is somewhat nostalgic. I remember seeing a video of a guy hydro dipping his Ibanez years ago.
when i used to scooter and bmx me and my buddies always used to hydrodip the parts, so much nostalgia
I remember seeing the exact same video and it brought back nostalgia for me too
Hey Burl! Try “yellow frog tape”, it’s a very delicate adhesion. Better chance of not pulling. Great job as always! 👍🏻
Looks incredible, man. Remarkable sound as well. Always sick to see the stuff you come out with!

Guitars and finishes only a 80s-90s Hair Metal band kid would like !!!
Classic Fenders, Gibsons, Rickenbackers & Gretsch are the real thing !!
The warm colors really make the guitar pop so beautifully. I love it.
I swear to god I work at guitar center this is by far one of the sickest guitars I’ve ever seen. Matching headstock, flamed neck, practical and stylish body shape, sounds amazing, holy crap! The colors are so beautiful
A fantastic looking guitar and an awesome jam at the end
Great job beautiful guitar there are no mistakes in abstract art
I can't wait to see how it turns out
That looks so cool good work
what you play at 8:46 sounds really good and reminds me of "Bold As Love ~ Jimmy Hendrix"
Great build! I think the single dip had a simple and appealing look but enjoyed the double too.
this is by far one of the coolest things I’ve seen
After all these years we have Shine On You Crazy Diamond part 10 lol .
Cheers to another fantastic build by Burls 👍
I have dipped a dozen or so guitars and I was reasonably happy the way they turned out.

the dark shadowy bit to the left of the pick ups give it so much depth, amazing job
I've never been a fan of hydro dipping but you picked some great colors and made a great pattern with it. I dig it.
This is incredible. You really are an artist, in the truest sense of the word.
Beautiful. The double dip, and that amazing flamed maple neck. The sound is gorgeous. All round winner!

Brilliant. Vibrant colours. Awesome video
I'm happy to see burls' vids pop up on my notifications
Absolutely beautiful and it sounds great.
I thought you were playing the forbidden riff. You got us in the first half not gonna lie
the guitar has a very dark warm tone. I like it.
Perhaps a pick guard could solve the issue of the paint coming up? Either way, turned out awesome!
i love the parts where the black overlaps the color and you can see the color through the black. Beautiful guitar. Sounds great too!
No words to describe how amazing is your job! You're a terrific artist!!!
When you sanded the first guitar my oldest son was SO upset and I thought it looked cool too but then when we saw the finished one we both agreed that it was SOOO much better. I also had wanted to see blue and white so it was nice to see the practice. Great video so much fun.

Wow dude you built a beautiful, toneful instrument with a one of a kind look! Great job! ...nice licks too
Well that's a very interesting technique as I have never heard of hydro-dip before. If you like that look, it turned out great! Nice playing as usual......... 👍👍🎸🎸

That is a gorgeous effect. To be honest I liked all versions of it! I want a hydro dipped guitar now.
Dude you should have made hydro dipped fret inlays
Damn nice thinking 😮
Nice video. Truth be told, I prefer the original look at 3:51. The white is "negative space" which causes the eye to look at the pattern, yet provides a relief to the movement of the pattern. But to each their own. Final project looked sharp. Thanks for the video!
would love a playlist or channel of just you playing guitar
great playing in the end man :)
That's a beautiful looking guitar! Well done!!
This should be a thing in mainstream guitar companies. This is awesome !
Shit man that looks so awesome it almost looks psychedelic in a way
Gorgeous guitar. That flame maple neck is incredible.
Good job.
Man that thing is absolutely gorgeous!! I love hydro dipped guitars and you did an awesome job with this one!!
i found the first attempt with the little splotches looked the best. it had so many little details. all subsequent dips were the dime a dozen big wavy looks
I actually think the first attempt looked really nice, but I see what your were going for.
maybe if it had cleaner lines, the paint kind of faded oddly, other than that it looked great.
Love so much that double dipped effect, its really inter-dimensional! Nicely done.
I had the idea of doing a dip in paint floating on water 20 years ago and suspected borax would enable the idea to work. I looked into it and sure enough, some people had within months achieved the ]idea, made theirs and borax was the key.

I may have to try this method on one of my builds💥👍🤙
Man that burnt neck is fierce! Love the loop at the end too, nice playing.
I love your work! Could you make a guitar with aluminiun neck?
The double-dipping turned out surprisingly well. It really added something unique to the finish compared to typical hydro dips.
It looks like something evh would play
rip evh my fav guitarist of all time ❤
🎸 What a gorgeous guitar. The hydro dip looks like sound waves. Excellent work sir
I have build a hydrodipped guitar for a mate and it is never as easy as it looks came out very well tho
Nicely done. I've never seen the dip process before, great result. That neck is killer!
This is awesome. I love the double dip's distinctive overlay look.
I wasn't sure about how I felt about the results of the "double dip" but after seeing the finished product at the end, I like! Great job!
That neck goes so well with that guitar, also love the darker swirl on the top middle of the body, it has a 3d smoke effect about it. A stunning guitar it has layers and sounds sweet🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
That's wild... the guitar is like a magnet to the paint. Very cool!
We actually did the same painting method in kindergarten to paint class jars . Of course we had the guidance of our teacher.

feel free to keep the sponsors coming! love the content
Wow that neck dude. Great job all a round.
Love how the layers are almost ghosting
Preferred it before the second dip TBH. If you don't like so much white, would be interested to see what would happen with a base coat of another colour, and put some white paint in the dip
Definitely a unique one-off guitar and looks great plays great sounds great. That neck is gorgeous
I liked the first dip with the white space, although I also thought the double dip was really cool as well. Thus while in some respects you have great instincts, don't be afraid of white space, it has character of its own!

That's fantastic! I'm inspired to try this on a old Squire I picked up for pennies from a pawn shop.
I always look forward to see what you’re gonna play and I’m glad you’re playing a little longer for us as well!
I really showing the failed tries, very helpful, double dipping is genius, came out beautiful … thanks !
That 2nd dip gave it so much depth!
I absolutely love the design aspect but for me hands down the best part of the video is seeing you play at the end with the guitar you just built
I have notifications on but I didn’t see this video. Glad I caught it now. Hydrodipping is really cool.
Cool ass colors ! Awesome video too ! Thanks for posting
Bro, the first try with the hydro thing, THAT LOOKS SO AWSOME!
Brilliant video and beautiful guitar visually and the tone is excellent, well done
The figuring on the neck goes really well with the whole vibe of the guitar
You are a lot better at guitar than even just last year. Keep playing my friend!
on the first dip the motion paused, creating a band.....
usually it's a gentle fluid motion people use, that doesn't pause
.
the technique is in a gentle smooth descent
I really want this guitar now 🤩
this paint job is excellent in looks. I really like the way the overlap transparency came through.
Very good job! Nice clean sound! Mean mids. Awesome axe.
If you don’t stir the paint before dipping, it looks much better at the end! I have dipped some guitars before and it works better not stirring
Damn this came out so nice! I absolutely love that flamed maple soo much!! Looks like a neck that came from ernie ball great job!! The double dip was a great idea as well! One of the most beautiful necks I’ve ever seen!
I liked that first one.
