I dislike how people throw around the term antisocial these days. If you don’t go to a party people say you’re so antisocial.

Just described my soon to be ex-husband to a tee. I’d been reading and watching a lot on narcissism thinking he’s a narcissist because he checks every box for that too. But hearing this brought back a lot of memories of things he’s done over the years that sound terribly accurate for antisocial personality disorder. I actually made a comment to him once about how he was treating me because he was saying with a smirk on his face how he was purposely doing things to see how I would react and I said “that’s antisocial behavior”. He thought I was talking about actually being social and told me later that I mentioned he needs to be more social smh.

I’m thinking about being a psychiatrist as an adult. I love watching videos and learn more about these disorders. I feel that if you educate yourself on things like this, then you can understand where people come from on things they say and do. And it can possibly even break more barriers to help people.

When I received my degree in psychology, my professors told me that ASPD, psychopathy, and sociopathy were all different terms for the same disorder. We called them psychopaths in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s, Sociopaths in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, and ASPD came into use in the ‘90’s. Since ASPD traits are on a spectrum, people can have different combinations of traits which may make them seem different, but it all boils down to the same group of behaviors.

Social anxiety is not the same thing as this disorder. You're not anti-social for not being able to socialize without being nervous. Important to make the distinction between calling people anti-social for having anxiety/fears(which is not really even what being anti-social is) and being called anti-social cause you behave in a manner that goes against all the social 'rules'. Such as empathy which is an important one and deciding to treat others in an appropriate manner.

Thanks for the explanation, Dr. Grande. Took my German Shepherd to a vet last year. The vet took one step toward her & immediately backed away before pointing right at me saying, "She's really protective of you." It's not that my dog was barking or anything, but just the look in her eyes, her posture, and overall "watch your step" demeanor let the vet know all she needed to know.
I think me and my German shepherd share that in common. It's not that we're antisocial. We're just always on guard, because we're protector spirits. My dog was sensing my fears & worries (for her health), & she was in protection mode.
I'm also highly protective with those I love & that can manifest in challenging authority figures and isolation, but I'm not antisocial. It's just that like my German Shepherd when I love... I love a lot.

Not everybody with anti-social personality disorder are criminals or been in jail. It is ignorant to assume and generalise this notion as it is misleading. I have had this disorder for over 11 years and never harmed anybody only myself...however I have been close a few times out of these 11 years.
Most of everything else you discuss is pretty accurate

Civilized sociopath here and it’s very easy to just use them to fill your pockets and experience life. That’s what’s given to us bc we weren’t protected in facade land.

Dr. Grande, I was hoping you could do a video on something I have not been able to find ANYTHING about online. My son was diagnosed with a subset of Asperger's that mimics Antisocial Personality Disorder. He appears socially adept (which is why he didn't get diagnosed until he was 17) and he has streaks of rebelliousness and manipulation as well as serious problems with impulse control. CBT has helped him get a grip on his anger but I'm trying to better understand how this is separate from standard ASD. He's going to college now and he's trying to stay on a good path but it's hard for him and he has a hard time connecting to therapists. He's doing better now than I ever imagined but he and I both recognize that he needs help to avoid a life bouncing between jail and home. While we had to put him in state placement when he was 17 for his own protection and ours due to his out of control anger, he has gotten that under control and is dedicated to living a good life. He's never been in jail and we want it to stay that way. Can you do a video to help us better understand what's going on here, the difference between this and regular ASD, and therapies that could help? It might even be nice to do a series on different types of aspergers/autism and what other 'subsets' there might be. I watched an HBO special the other day called A Dangerous Son and it really rang true for me. At 19 now my son is at least better in control than those kids but it looks like a lot of people are dealing with this and can't get help. They don't know where to turn. I can't find anything in the literature at all and I work for a mental health clinic! We're stumped.

I hate that they base a lot of it on crime to compare that to anti social behaviour. A lot of people grow up in crime and in poverty. Sometimes those behaviours in a teenagers world feels pro social as it doesn’t get the same negative response from the community as the academics might think. What do I know tho

I am have an extreme yet prototypical case of ASPD. There is a cluster of behaviors that I found has worked more than any long or short term therapy. I began an intensive and life consuming study of philosophy, ethics, logic, math, reason and stoicism.... it did wonders. I disconnected myself from every possible human interaction for over a year and embraced an oppressive study habit that included deep daily introspection and moral thought experiments. It took heroic efforts to truly place myself in others shoes and see as they see, to think as others think. But the more I honestly embodied this process, the more success I achieved. The mechanism of action as far as I can tell occurs In the construction of these internal avatars for the missing emotional structures in ppl w ASPD. effectively guiding me to better behavior. And it isnt just a superficial solution or an act. Granted I still don't feel emotions like others do. It's grounded in a different experience.. Where others intuitively experience emotional complexity, I experience a more stoic response. BUT the depth and complexity of that stoic response is a sufficient substitute guide and moral compass. I have an inner richness that I never had b4. It involves ppl and relationships that I aim to strengthen through my words and actions that has become incredibly satisfying. The fact that this is even an aim worthy of my interest and preoccupation is a reward in and of itself. I still have ASPD, but it's far from obvious. Has anyone else had a similar experience, or know of one? Or any other remedies or techniques worth mentioning? First time Ive spoke about this online. All I can say is that it's worked for me. It took unbelievable dedication but it paid off.

I've reached a certain trauma that had a large peak when I was 15, till this day split images remain in my mind. Nobody was there for me when I was going through this, I believe that is the reason I drifted away from constantly relying on people and getting used to properly guiding myself in other's company. Don't get me wrong I have friends, but they feel like distractions more than actual companions. I believe everyone talks behind my back, also believing nobody will appreciate me for who I am.

My ex-husband (and no I am not picking on him nor do I personally care it's more the concern and safety of our children) has many symptoms of ASPD. I left our marriage with our 2 children due to DV, infidelity, lying, substance abuse, the psychological abuse, and constant isolation I had to liuve in daily. I knew the toxic environment was not good for our children. I had no idea until recently what I was actually involved with until recently. Shortly after our divorce he ended up in prison for 14mos for 3DUIs. I allowed our children's to visit him (not that I agree with children going to prison and making it seem as visiting family in a hospital) along with h8s family in which I was dictated when they were to pick them up forvweekends or holidays. My son who started exhibiting behavior issues prior to divorce which continued afterwards in which I took him to 4 psychologists prior to medicating him to verify the diagnosis. They all had the same diagnosis ADHD, ODD, (Bipolar and psychopathy he was too young for the official diagnosis). My ex was alienated from his father at a very young age by his mother and the relationship has been estranged to this day he is 45yo. Since he has been out of prison I have been the subject of his constant attacks using the court system to destroy me, he has kidnapped our children 4xs since then the past time was 2yrs ago in which both children have been manipulated in believing the false narrative of his blsmeshifting onto me. We have been divorced for 15yrs now. He knows our children are the only way to truly destroy me and has told me over and over again that he would make sure our children learn to hate me and will make sure our grandchildren hate me more. It has been 2yrs since I or my whole family has seen or spoken to them. The court continually rules in his favor I have no criminal record, abuse, nor have I not complied with the custody order as my children have told me if I don't do something I will be in contempt. Supposedly when he was in prison he was diagnosed with bipolar 1, obviously I don't think he was diagnosed properly. He is on SSD for bipolar in which he told the court he has been cured of and he is a stay at home dad as the govt continued his disability and told him it's getter for him to be at home with his kids. He has mental illness on the maternal side of his family, his mother not quite sure but has alienated every child that is in her care from the other parent, his grandmother had DID, and her 3 brothers had schizophrenia and committed suicide. He also has a very strange relationship with his mother always needing to live next to her off with her they have moved over 65xs together not for jobs, military service, or any typical reason why people move, the was a bully in school and still is to this day he likes tonpickmfights with people that either stare at him or he thinks they are looking at him. I am gravely concerned for my children I have tried making a report of child abuse but they refused to investigate stating I was not authorized to make such a report. He won't allow the children to attend counseling, supervised visits, or any kind of contact with me or my family. I suffer from C-PTSD from the amount of trauma that I have endured, and with all of the continued litigation it cost me everything the sacred and precious bond with my children, financial stability, my job, my career, and my health. I don't know what to do I am worried about the trauma my children are enduring daily and the effects it's going to have on them as they continue to mature. Especially since they are living in a compound with their father, grandmother, step grandfather, his current wife and 2 other younger children (10 &2). If there is anything you can suggest in possibly rescuing them so I can get them into therapy so they may have a chance at a successful life as adults and healthy relationships in their futures I would greatly appreciate anything at this point. I am at a loss and honestly I go through the cycle of traumatic grief daily signatory and cobcefhbwith the wellbeing and safety of my children. I just want to hug them and never let go at this point to hear their voices again, their laughs, and I would enjoy hearing their sibling quarrels as it would fill my heart with the love that is missing that was drained when they left and is with them. To remind them that I will always love them unconditionally and I always will be there mom.

I'm sorry but parts of this story don't wash. Your ex could not tell a court he's cured or bi polar disorder. There is no cure and any social worker, lawyer or judge would know this. With his background story of substance abuse and a jail term it's highly unlikely he would be given custody. He can't dictate visitation or the lack thereof anymore than you could if the shoe was on the other foot unless said parent is not paying any child support or is known to be abusive or neglectful to the kids. Granted, he has manipulated them but how he got custody to begin with is what makes no sense to me at all. It simply doesn't "wash".

Like autism with being non verbal or verbal (just an example for a spectrum kinda thing) If someone had some traits of APD how would you distinguish those traits being directly related to APD or just that individual having a lack of understanding of certain behaviours. I hope my question makes some sort of sense!

Because the things you say are symptoms of APD my husband has basically everyone one of them in some sort of way.. and he started these sort of behaviours from around 14. i know obviously you cant diagnose someone without knowing them and just reading off a list. but thats what my comment was about, he seems to have these certain traits of APD but hard to know if its that or for other reasons

What led me to get diagnosed with aspd is a lot of research, lots of therapy, and repeated examples of pirating things despite getting in trouble with the law for it.

Todd, Could you tell us if psycopophy and sociopathy have been studied in collectivist cultures?I do know that there are more collectivist cultures than capitalist cultures right now. If so, what are the rates of such dysfunction in collectivist cultures, please? Do you believe that living in our unequal/capitalistic system is playing a part in Anti-Social P.D. or maybe sociopaths and psychopaths?

But in the assesment letter she said I had traits of a dissocial personality. So I guess my question is am I likely to be diagnosed as antisocial personality disorder. Thank you. Ben.

If ASPD is a spectrum... is there a part of the spectrum where the person doesn't necessarily commit crimes, but still does things out of the social norm that aren't morally okay? For example, cheating on their partner, making comments about people that aren't socially acceptable, or neglecting feelings towards pets/people?

  • @WtfIsDanni

So.........................if you are diagnosed APD are you a sociopath or just sociopathic? Since psychopathy is identified by a pattern of behaviours existing since before the age of 15, sociopathy, like APD, is also identified by a patten existing since after the age of 15. Are they different, or is APD the clinical diagnosis for a sociopath? If not, then how does it differ from sociopathy? And, how similar might APD be to NPD or, can an individual have both? I know personality disorders can co-exist along side other, but I find these specifically to both resemble each other as well as the sociopath. If APD is just the clinical term for a sociopath then is sociopathy considered a personality disorder? And is that another way to differentiate between the born psychopath, since they are different (but overlapping) things. And, since psychopaths and sociopaths (even if not as cold as the born psychopath) do not register signs of arousal in emotion, including stress, fear or anger, are individuals with APD the same or, likely to be violent and explosive? (like the narcissist) And lastly, how much criteria does an individual have to meet to atleast even be considering APD?

Typically children of dysfunctional families with one parent being a child of an alcoholic or drug-parent.
Parents and siblings have unchecked emotionally abusive actions towards other family members.
But this discussion brings about the fact for the longest time the mental health community considered this to be
'high functioning' until they began to consider the long term impacts of emotional abuse. The self-loathing &
outward aggressiveness that has resulted and has been documented is very degrading to the long term of
others around them. (Emotional abuse & CPTSD)

I know a person that, although he is only 16, has been diagnosed with APD. As far as I know, he has had a reasonably good family life, although he has always had trouble connecting with people. This person never met his biological father, who has tendencies toward APD. He was also bullied a lot In high school. Because of his actions, this person is in court and living in a halfway house (no connection with the family)... It is hard to see what someone I still think of as an innocent child is capable of. Your description of psychopathy is on the money.

My daughters father has every single one of these symptoms. Although I left him when our daughter was a year and a half old. She has not been raised around him at all. He has stayed away her entire life. She just recently turned 18 and was diagnosed as having ODD and ADHD at age 5. It seems as if the older she got the worse her behavior has got. She has all of the symptoms of APD. Today she tried cutting herself and she is currently in the psyche ward. I genuinely believe children can inherit this disorder.

This describes my ex to a tee. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder but I think he was severely misdiagnosed. People tend to be misdiagnosed because as he said APD is extremely difficult to treat and psychiatrists will lean towards diagnosing the patient with whatever disorder is most easily treatable. Bipolar disorder is easily controlled with meds so I think that's why he was misdiagnosed plus they're only going on the information that they're provided with. Doctors are not perfect and they are certainly not mind-readers. But this analysis describes my ex to a T. He abused me for seven of the nine months that I was with him. Truly a dangerous human being. He blamed me for what happened to me and he seemed to not care what he was doing to me or anybody else.

He is very anti social, admits that and says he hates people. He matches both Anti social personality disorder AND NPD. He says he has no empathy and is highly manipulative. Psychopathy as biologically based, especially as inherited seems unlikely. What is psychopathy specifically? I believe you say a charming, premeditating, empathy impaired criminal is a born psychopath. Emotional and or physical early childhood trauma seems more probable because these have great impact on personality development. Can you be more specific on what biological factors seem present among those considered psychopaths? Do they share more or less of some chemical?

Dr. Grande, since you mentioned that *television does interpret people who may have Antisocial Personality Disorder as committing serious crimes involving aggression and violence,* and yet that *there are few Antisocial individuals who do commit those crimes,* is it alright to say that television is only interpreting the actions of those few individuals that do commit serious crimes and not including the majority of people with ASPD that tend to commit crimes similar to the level of fraud? Is it OK to say that they are depicting the behaviors and decisions of only that minority of people with ASPD and not defining every person that has ASPD as a whole? Could we excuse those interpretations as just depicting those few people who are that way, or does it depend on the writers who make characters that way being responsible for thoroughly understanding ASPD before making that decision? Because if the latter part of the 3rd question is true, then should we hold them accountable for depicting people with ASPD that way, even though those violent characteristics are technically true for the few people with ASPD that do commit serious crimes?

Do i care???. NO. DO I DO VIOLENCE?. NO..., DO I VALUE LIFE OF PEOPLE I DONT KNOW?, NO... IM I DEAD INSIDE???.Don’t know...
Im a a functional person in “society” YES... i have to mask who i am, but function normal... don’t like sexual predators and sexual psychopaths I despise them... Do i feel attracted to violence?. YES...if it involves combat... thats was the reason #1 I joined the army, now medically retired... im i going to commit violence?, NO... unless someone enter my home...😄...
Overall... I think people like me should get monitored constantly, because there are others that can’t control their violent compulsions...and those are the real threat...
