  • We nearly didn't buy our NEW BOAT because of this problem... www.sailingnandji.com
Back on Nandji II and it is time to tackle a job that was nearly a deal breaker when looking to purchase. When we bought Nandji II, she was up on the hard stand with a large tent built over her. I believe the previous owner had hauled out the boat with best intentions for a deck refit.
The problem... We have screwed in teak decks. I am not sure what they were thinking 20 years ago when they decided to screw hundreds of screws into the deck to fasten down the teak, but that is hundreds of holes where water can get into the core of our deck. These hundred's of screws need to go...

Try using a soldering iron for 30 seconds on the screws that are hard to get out. The heat will usually break down any adhesive keeping the screw stuck. Another tip is to put your epoxy on a paper plate rather than a cup. That way it is spread out and will kick off slower.

Surprised an Aussie didn't rig up some shade cloth or a bed sheet to work under. Aussie min award is $23.23ph, divided by quoted $2k = 86 hours diy labour in that beautiful environment, should get it done in less than that, + the satisfaction of knowing it's done to your quality

Over 11000 nm in the last two years and zero issues with the bungs i epoxied in. My next big job is to do all of them. They dont need to be screwed down! Its overkill and the dont do teak decks that way anymore.

It's probably too late now but to remove old screws, especially the Philips cross-head type. If you get some grinding paste (the type you would use to lap valves on an engine) and put a small blob on the end of a screwdriver bit it makes the bit grip the screw head. At a push, if you can find some really fine sand and mix it with grease it would kinda work but fine grinding paste is best.

    Cleaning Water Maker Filters
Remove dirty filters, replace with new set. Then rinse off the dirty filters with fresh water. You can use the spray nozzle in your sink, in your shower or spray nozzle from your dock hose.
Once done get a container large enough to submerge the dirty filters in. I normally use a bucket that holds about 4 gallons of water. Add 6-8 oz. of bleach to 3-4 gallons of fresh water, put the filters in and leave for 15-20 minutes. After 15-20 minutes dump that water and rinse your filters with fresh water. After you have rinsed them string them on a piece of line and hang them in the sun for a couple days. The UV from the sun will kill any of the bleach left in the filters. Now just rotate filters as needed.
On another note some manufacturers will tell you on start up if your water has an odor you need to change filters. Before you do this run your unit for 3-5 minutes longer dumping the sample water over board. In most cases this will clear up the odor and allow you to add water to your tanks without having the hassle of changing filters.

Epoxy likes to have some thickness, squeezing it into a hole smaller than the plug doesn't leave much room at all to bond. Hope they won't come off in a year. But removing the Teak would have been truly a crime. How did you check for water in the holes? I might have drilled deeper into the core and filled them with EP too. This way you could even use screws again and be sure no water will get into the core.

Whats holding the teak if you are not using the screws? Is it not worth checking the core is it balsa it coukd be closed cell foam. On my Rassy on my teak was a big mess very worn to repair I lifted cleaned and then stuck it back with two part epixy adhesive. With my Oceanlord I took out screws and then drilled into the fibreglass a bit then glued in a longer bung that became a sort of wooden screw

Big job there Yosh, I speak form experience re-seaming and bunging my Force 50 and the tennis court of teak. I was quoted 35K USD in San Diego, and totally understand why - It took me a few maybe 5 weeks to do by myself and about 1200 in reffing knives, sand paper and TDS 440 sausages. Not sure weather the neumatic sausage gun was part of that budget and I already owned the compressor. Considering my hands were beat to hell and I stabbed by thumb pretty good, $2000 in any currency is a deal! Though the satisfaction of doing it yourself is pretty good so I get it. Is the original install glue solid with no need for screws? It looks like you remove the screws and add epoxy instead - I would watch the deck flex in a seaway and check to see if any boards aprear to spring up... Also - drilling out with a standard drill bit removes any shoulder that a countersink bit leaves allowing you to put a shorter length screw back in with epoxy or 4200 - if you do get boards springing you would drill new holes, screw, and bung I assume? Just some thoughts from watching the process and being a veteran of a couple deck refurbs... Its hellish work that takes forever!! I went through 4 TDS reefing knives as sharpening the crazy angle proved impossible for me and my tools... You'll knock it out fast enough, though I might suggest getting double sided tape on your sandpaper and fixing to Marly's paws, then chasing about to help knock down the caulk! 🙂 Keep on Keepin On Nanji!!!

I have teak decks on my Beneteau 473. Be very careful about sanding the deck, teak will get hot, oil will rise to the top and then you will have burnished multicolour teak decks.
    Try white vinegar instead, lot bloody easier than sanding, firm brush then sof bruch with the grain to finish. Use marine grade sikaflex, mask up first :{
I use SEMCO on my decks every 6 months. only takes an hour or two. They look brand new, 19 years old.

A ton of glue, the screws were overkill. When it happens, it’s going to be a nightmare ripping the teak off the deck they are glued down so well.

Teak is the devils work, rip it all up, save a ton of weight, epoxy the deck and fit tread deck foam decking, then never maintain it again 🎉 keep on adventuring you crazy people ❤

If you don’t replace the screws what will hold the deck in place?

The sealant that the screws were holding until cured... This is a good solution but teak demands care from to much sun so shade covers and daily washing down with Salt water are essentially required!!! As an old wood boat builder I was super happy that they chose to keep the teak...

It would have been a sin to rip up the original teak. If they used a sealant then yes the screws would not be needed. Thanks for your reply!

If the deck is cored then the screws need to go . Ticking time bomb.

Sounds like $2000 would be a deal, assuming they would do as good of job. For me "wood is not good for decks" too heavy - hot & maintenance intensive. However many people love the look & I get that...

Its a British system, not American..America just avoided joining Europe.....!
However.. America kept Imperial. Kicked the britsout, while the mad King George slept in his straight jacket, but that's another story.
However. Feel your pain as my.Malaysian top laid teak is down to 8-10mm on 13mm ply (in imperial.. whatever that is!) And, yes. Dreading it! Keep well. Jc

Teak decks are a nightmare. Too hot to walk on, thoysabds of leaks, weight in the wrong place. Get rid of it ASAP. Your boat will sail better, be cooler inside, won't leak....Did I mention how much I despise teak decks....

"Your weird American system." Exactly what percentage of your audience is American?

I'll admit to being a weird American. Why we aren't using the metric system is beyond me!

Okay how are you going to keep your deck attached if you've taken all the screws out of it
