- We nearly didn't buy our NEW BOAT because of this problem... www.sailingnandji.com
Back on Nandji II and it is time to tackle a job that was nearly a deal breaker when looking to purchase. When we bought Nandji II, she was up on the hard stand with a large tent built over her. I believe the previous owner had hauled out the boat with best intentions for a deck refit.
The problem... We have screwed in teak decks. I am not sure what they were thinking 20 years ago when they decided to screw hundreds of screws into the deck to fasten down the teak, but that is hundreds of holes where water can get into the core of our deck. These hundred's of screws need to go...

• OUR DECK IS WRECKED!! ...
Anything on your boat you work on seems to turn out better than the original! Your boating repair skills are superb.
Looks like you've got your work cut out for you..... good thing you're not afraid of hard work! 🍻💞
Oh gosh you two are creating a gorgeous life, and gorgeous boat❤❤❤ My heart swelled when Tallulah kissed Yosh's owey😭❤❤ what a beautiful hearted child. Perfect up bringing right there, smart and compassionate, you all are doing right by her for sure! Sending love and encouragement for tasks ahead!
Hello Legends!!! Another great video. Thanks for sharing! Yew!
Try using a soldering iron for 30 seconds on the screws that are hard to get out. The heat will usually break down any adhesive keeping the screw stuck. Another tip is to put your epoxy on a paper plate rather than a cup. That way it is spread out and will kick off slower.
That’s boating. Working in boats in exotic places.
Another great "slice of life" video with lots of smiles! Thank you for sharing clips of your life in paradise! Great start on that huge job of re-fastening that deck 😁
Get it, Yosh! I'm betting it will be gorgeous once completed.
Talk about all hands on deck! Good job with that tedious work removing the screws.
Oh my heart just melted when Tallula kissed your hand all better, such a little angel.💗
I used to own a 35 ft motor boat that was all teakwood on the deck and outside cabin. Took me forever to get it back to looking new, but well worth it.
Tallulah gets easier to understand with every video. I miss watching my daughter growing up. Thanks for sharing.
Screws back in to hold the deck down tight!!!😢😊
The deck is heavily glued down it’s not going anywhere.
Always enjoy your videos. Tallula is speaking up a storm 😃❤
Technical question
What holds the deck onto the boat without the screws?
Good question 😂 something I didn’t cover in the video but the deck was glued down with a strong adhesive, the screws were an overkill. When it happens it’s going to be a difficult job getting the teak up!
Surprised an Aussie didn't rig up some shade cloth or a bed sheet to work under. Aussie min award is $23.23ph, divided by quoted $2k = 86 hours diy labour in that beautiful environment, should get it done in less than that, + the satisfaction of knowing it's done to your quality
Lots of repetitive, tedious work, but the end result is going to be a gorgeous teak deck! Great job as usual, Yosh! Marley and Lula napping … 💞!! Looking forward to sailing adventures soon to come 😀!!
Never thought of not replacing the screws..
I love it when Bonita says the word "Water" with the aussie accent. Whata! Love you guys. Great video.
I see you have your littlest "supervisor" (Ms Tallula) helping you with those plugs Yosh! Good guidance and medical help right there! Its going to look good when done. Its also good you havn't found any water in the holes. Some work ahead but then back to what Nandji 2 does best......sailing!👍😊❤️
That deck is going to look new when you are finished. Don’t stress, you will finish. Great video…thanks
Wish I could be there to help you, Yosh. Some people are good at repetitive tasks, I'm one of them. Keep plugging along! 😎 Safe travels ❤
loving the Coopers XPA hat :)
Yosh you are the man, Tallula is adorable and Bonita you look amazing. Love to see life is going well for you guys.
Notice the good ol Orange Tupperware container holding your bungs. Good Job Yoshi!!!😅
Yosh......you're a legend. That is s a lot of work. But it WILL look amazing for sure.
What a great helper.
no doutb, you made quick work of that job.
in a couple of years you will be regretting you havent ripped the teak out. then the decision would be: would you be careful or just cut it up. being careful and getting the slats in one piece enables you to re sell them and make some money back.
Love watching you all all theses years what a fantastic video as all was
Awesome working the squats and deck together. Very relaxed episode. Good stuff here guys!
Thanks for another great episode guy's safe travels 👍
What a job but thanks for taking us along on the ride. Cheers
Great sailing
Hat's off to you Yosh for tackling the teak deck , that's one job I would not have had the patience to do. Mom still looks good in a bikini. Happy sailing.
I agree about mom looking great. In my own opinion she looks amazing since she had her implants removed. I find she has a much more proportional figure and it makes her look very feminine. All this is meant as a compliment.
❤❤❤
So great to see you all out on the water again😂❤🎉
Your deck will look So Sweet when you're done Yosh! I especially loved Lula's concern about your hand kissing it better....Good for you pulling out of the truckload of frustration to genuinely let Tallula "heal" you! She lights up many souls on your videos!! And Bonita, your consistent workouts show, you have a Slammin body!!......I'm not sure but I think I put my cookie down when I saw you walk by! 😊❤....We Love you guys!😊
Great job Yosh doing the deck time consuming but will be worth it in the end.
I like your hat super cool.
Lovely video Guy’s, we look forward to seeing you back in the boat yard. It means one thing
Soon to be out Ocean crossing. Take care all of you best wishes from England
I have screwed and glued teak decks. I did the exact same thing a few years ago on some ( not all) of my plugs as a test case. The boat has been sailed hard. Over 11000 nm in the last two years and zero issues with the bungs i epoxied in. My next big job is to do all of them. They dont need to be screwed down! Its overkill and the dont do teak decks that way anymore.
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback 👌
Good variety on this channel
Grr8 job salvaging that beautiful teak... Don't delay on finishing up the job because the look and feel of a scrubbed teak deck it so awesome... Be sure to wash it down when not covered every day... Teak will swell up instead of shrinking warping and cracking... that's the secret to teak...
🤘
Josh, you removed screws that held your teak deck to the fiberglass deck. It appears that you didn’t replace the screws before inserting the bungs. What will hold the teak deck down?
Epoxy I put in and the glue they were stuck down with
Yep I agree, so far so good, but missing a couple of important steps ……need to put some screws back in, then a plug over the top. Can’t just rely on the old glue alone.
Oy! Real boat life.
Ah, thanks bru. This is the next job on my boat. Unfortunately my teak is thin so time to go for the non-skid. Great technique with the vice grips!
$2000 for the deck work ? Josh, in Australia at this time you would get 1, man for 2 to 2. 5 days for that money, plus materials. $125 to $188 per hour for a plumber.
They call "Oz" the great country, and it still is, but it is also the get rich quick country. You have done well as you usually do. Carry on Sir. Well done.
DAAAAAMMMN!! I remember when you got that drill! - after I got mine.
Sea salt takes its bite for sure 😂. Next sponsorship is from Milwaukee 💪🏾
Looks like it was definitely no fun, but great work on getting it finished!
That is a job and a half!
i put my water maker filters in a mix of bleach and water for a few hours, rinse with fresh water and let them sit in the sun. they come out looking new. I've Been using the same 4 filters for over a year.
Hi, just a little hint, maybe you can get a tube or a piece of rubber to go over the drill to the depth that you need to go so you don’t go to far it’s only a thought. Keep up the good work. I love and appreciate you all Cliff from Logan City Queensland, Australia
HEX head screws, they look like CROSS head to me ~
Phillips screw.
Wow, 12 days replacing bungs...now that's a job. I guess you will have to make instal new screws too!
Chicky Mamma!!; 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤
You should try Nai yang beach at the northern part of Phuket
It's probably too late now but to remove old screws, especially the Philips cross-head type. If you get some grinding paste (the type you would use to lap valves on an engine) and put a small blob on the end of a screwdriver bit it makes the bit grip the screw head. At a push, if you can find some really fine sand and mix it with grease it would kinda work but fine grinding paste is best.
PS Loving the hat @ 8:18
Cleaning Water Maker Filters
Remove dirty filters, replace with new set. Then rinse off the dirty filters with fresh water. You can use the spray nozzle in your sink, in your shower or spray nozzle from your dock hose.
Once done get a container large enough to submerge the dirty filters in. I normally use a bucket that holds about 4 gallons of water. Add 6-8 oz. of bleach to 3-4 gallons of fresh water, put the filters in and leave for 15-20 minutes. After 15-20 minutes dump that water and rinse your filters with fresh water. After you have rinsed them string them on a piece of line and hang them in the sun for a couple days. The UV from the sun will kill any of the bleach left in the filters. Now just rotate filters as needed.
On another note some manufacturers will tell you on start up if your water has an odor you need to change filters. Before you do this run your unit for 3-5 minutes longer dumping the sample water over board. In most cases this will clear up the odor and allow you to add water to your tanks without having the hassle of changing filters.
Epoxy likes to have some thickness, squeezing it into a hole smaller than the plug doesn't leave much room at all to bond. Hope they won't come off in a year. But removing the Teak would have been truly a crime. How did you check for water in the holes? I might have drilled deeper into the core and filled them with EP too. This way you could even use screws again and be sure no water will get into the core.
Brutal….
The best news is...there's only so many screws....
There's nothing to break your back like glueing pellets in.
We're heading to phuket. Where abouts are you guys be great to bump into you😊
I’ll be on the deck removing screws 👌 fun for everyone! 😂
Whats holding the teak if you are not using the screws? Is it not worth checking the core is it balsa it coukd be closed cell foam. On my Rassy on my teak was a big mess very worn to repair I lifted cleaned and then stuck it back with two part epixy adhesive. With my Oceanlord I took out screws and then drilled into the fibreglass a bit then glued in a longer bung that became a sort of wooden screw
Dont worry. Your deck replacement vids will be cool. It's gonna suck, yeah.
You should now finish the job by countersinking screws into your new plugs and plugs over the top that's how to do the right job with no screws the deck will lift at a certain point it would have been easier to take the teak off and glass the decks
Also don't forget the whole rest of deck while your at it you pop one plug you might as well do em all froythe life you know
The whole idea of removing the screw is to remove the screw! Filling in the hole with epoxy so there is now way water can get into the core. The deck is also stuck down, screws were over kill.
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji your deck is no longer stuck down and your core is saturated have you ever fixed a teak deck it seems like no you want to go fast and cheap learn the repercussions of your hard work that looks oh so hard you should have ripped it of nice trying to talk to me but I have done this before and will do again good luck maybe should not give you helpfully advice it makes you mad everyone in the world learns from mistakes try and try again
@@grahamwheelock7497 the deck is heavily glued down with a strong adhesive, the screws were an overkill. They eventually stopped screwing the decks down. I’ve been consulting with many other owners of this boat who have also refurbished their decks. I may not have done this before but I’m learning from other peoples mistakes with a Tayana.
@@FrothLyfeSailingNandji tayana means mistakes
AND...I can promise that you WILL get rid of that teak sooner or later....as always its much better to rip the plaster off!
Big job there Yosh, I speak form experience re-seaming and bunging my Force 50 and the tennis court of teak. I was quoted 35K USD in San Diego, and totally understand why - It took me a few maybe 5 weeks to do by myself and about 1200 in reffing knives, sand paper and TDS 440 sausages. Not sure weather the neumatic sausage gun was part of that budget and I already owned the compressor. Considering my hands were beat to hell and I stabbed by thumb pretty good, $2000 in any currency is a deal! Though the satisfaction of doing it yourself is pretty good so I get it. Is the original install glue solid with no need for screws? It looks like you remove the screws and add epoxy instead - I would watch the deck flex in a seaway and check to see if any boards aprear to spring up... Also - drilling out with a standard drill bit removes any shoulder that a countersink bit leaves allowing you to put a shorter length screw back in with epoxy or 4200 - if you do get boards springing you would drill new holes, screw, and bung I assume? Just some thoughts from watching the process and being a veteran of a couple deck refurbs... Its hellish work that takes forever!! I went through 4 TDS reefing knives as sharpening the crazy angle proved impossible for me and my tools... You'll knock it out fast enough, though I might suggest getting double sided tape on your sandpaper and fixing to Marly's paws, then chasing about to help knock down the caulk! 🙂 Keep on Keepin On Nanji!!!
I'd get rid of it and just have glass or ply/glass done right. Teak is fashion not function. It's hot, it's more work, I just don't have anything good to say about it. It's a grey hair maker.
It feels like opening Pandora’s box taking on this huge task in such short time to begin an ocean passage. We will eventually fix it properly but for now, just making it water tight and saving our funds for rigging.
@@FrothLyfeSailingNandji Yep, Sounds like the wise thing to do.
They not hex heads, Yosh! They Phillips!
Yosh: if you’re removing all the screws in the teak and putting teak plugs in their place, what is holding the teak boards to the boat?
The teak was also stuck down with an adhesive, the screws were overkill. Together with the epoxy input in there for each plug. Should keep them down
Josh the screws aren't an overkill do you think the manufacturers would have used them if they could have saved on screws and labour?@@FrothLyfeSailingNandji
Green attracts mosquitoes 😂
Keep plugging away
that's why it cost so much for someone else to come do it. it's very time consuming. that's all added into the price. The prep work is what takes all the time. it's going to be beautiful when you get done.. Your silly Yosh that you didn't think it was going to take weeks and maybe months to get the teak done. It been let go of for so many years.
Yosh...what do you call your vice grips exactly? Family looks great. Patient deck work... Fair winds.
Mole grips, but he's adapted it to Mouldy Grips. I think the Brits, Aussies, New Zealanders and others call them Mole Grips. The Americans; Vice Grips. Weirdos😂.
@@chrisjohns7137 Thanks Chris. Where would any of us be without them regardless of what we call em.
Beni
Bonita looking good since the surgery hot hot ho
Mate that is a five cases of beer job.
I have teak decks on my Beneteau 473. Be very careful about sanding the deck, teak will get hot, oil will rise to the top and then you will have burnished multicolour teak decks.
Try white vinegar instead, lot bloody easier than sanding, firm brush then sof bruch with the grain to finish. Use marine grade sikaflex, mask up first :{
I use SEMCO on my decks every 6 months. only takes an hour or two. They look brand new, 19 years old.
Great advice 🤘 cheers
It seems you’re not replacing the screws? Why not use slightly shorter crews along with epoxy, best fixing and waterproofing, and then the teak plug. That’s what I plan to do with my teak deck. Will be interested to see how it goes for you not using any screws.
Hey Josh! Don't the screws hold the teak to the deck? I'm a land lubber!
Screws were over will. The teak is also stuck down
😀👍👍👍❤
Question ?? How are you going to refasten the deck ???
The deck was heavily glued down and then screwed down as an overkill. It’s still stuck down and isn’t going anywhere! Will be a challenge to get off eventually.
And. Diatripe2. The seams. All suggestions welcome. Have u checked out the Sikaflex price! For the life of me. No one makes a power tool that routes the seam effectivley and avoiding damaging the teak seam lines. No one. Prove me wrong bit i have an idea or two bit cant find maker. About the same size as you so not a small job. Jc
bungholio..ehehe i need t-p for my bungholio ehehe
If you think the screws were hard work, just wait until you do the the black stuff 😂
We’ve heard great things 😂
So you took the screws out and didn’t putting any back. How can that be right?
The teak is glued down
So what is holding the teak on now ?
A ton of glue, the screws were overkill. When it happens, it’s going to be a nightmare ripping the teak off the deck they are glued down so well.
Teak is the devils work, rip it all up, save a ton of weight, epoxy the deck and fit tread deck foam decking, then never maintain it again 🎉 keep on adventuring you crazy people ❤
If you don’t replace the screws what will hold the deck in place?
The sealant that the screws were holding until cured... This is a good solution but teak demands care from to much sun so shade covers and daily washing down with Salt water are essentially required!!! As an old wood boat builder I was super happy that they chose to keep the teak...
It would have been a sin to rip up the original teak. If they used a sealant then yes the screws would not be needed. Thanks for your reply!
If the deck is cored then the screws need to go . Ticking time bomb.
Sounds like $2000 would be a deal, assuming they would do as good of job. For me "wood is not good for decks" too heavy - hot & maintenance intensive. However many people love the look & I get that...
I am a carpenter looks good to me
Would help more if you were a boat builder not a house builder 😎
Its a British system, not American..America just avoided joining Europe.....!
However.. America kept Imperial. Kicked the britsout, while the mad King George slept in his straight jacket, but that's another story.
However. Feel your pain as my.Malaysian top laid teak is down to 8-10mm on 13mm ply (in imperial.. whatever that is!) And, yes. Dreading it! Keep well. Jc
What's up with 288?
28 s 🤘
Teak decks are a nightmare. Too hot to walk on, thoysabds of leaks, weight in the wrong place. Get rid of it ASAP. Your boat will sail better, be cooler inside, won't leak....Did I mention how much I despise teak decks....
"Your weird American system." Exactly what percentage of your audience is American?
I'll admit to being a weird American. Why we aren't using the metric system is beyond me!
I;m American, yes we're wierd.
Thanks guys, GO MARLEY MAN. 👍🏻💓💕🐾🦴
Okay how are you going to keep your deck attached if you've taken all the screws out of it
