- Heading into the boatyard... www.sailingnandji.com
We have hauled out to complete 3 major jobs before sailing across the Indian Ocean. The mast is out, the deck overhaul has begun and the third BIG job is discover what is happening below the waterline.
When we first bought Nandji 2, we had limited time to get her out of the country and therefore we slapped on some antifoul after completing an interior refit and went sailing. But what is the state of the hull?
Is the hull integrity compromised?
What secrets is the paint hiding?
Do we have Osmosis?
Time to blast it all off and start from scratch.

Love you guys. Two things. Next time use a light color, black promotes growth and if you paint three top coats, paint the 1st top coat a different color. That way when you get to that color again down the road you know it's time to paint again.
So happy your guys channel is going well enough that you can afford to get this done. It must have been heaven to realise that you didn’t have to sand back yourself and do all the painting yourself. What a job that would have been.
Great Episode! There is nothing like the piece of mind that comes from a job done well.
Hello Legends!!! What an amazing job done on Nandji's bottom by YachtBlast. Such a night and day difference in the quality of the bottom paint and the prop speed application. Another great video and Thanks for Sharing! Yew!
When you factor in the less time in the yard its a win win. Great Job !
I really like when you do videos like these. Great video thank you.
What a sensational system and the amazing result.
Yeah baby
Watching this was such a blast!
Them boys are no joke they know there business.
Good to know that someone in thailand does wet blasting of hulls
Nice work mate!💪👌👊
Way to go Yosh, taking care of the hull is taking care of your family. Love your vlogs. Can't wait to see you back in the water 🤗💞
Bro that power washing looks like it pretty cool😊
That’s the way to do it! It’s how we hope all service provider’s approach their deliverable. Best decision you could make was hiring Nigel and Yacht Blast crew! Happy for Nandji-II family. Tallula getting her skateboard legs, priceless! 🤓🥳🤘
WOW! Those guys ROC! Looks amazing! I love the lines on that boat just beautiful!
When you see some channels spending literally weeks sanding, having 95% of the bottom paint stripped in under a day was amazing. They saving in yard time, food, accommodation, and hassle must make blasting a no-brainer if it's available.
Blasting is awesome. I used a Festool sander and an Egg shaped DA bit to get the blisters. I also use sealer afterwards before bottom paint. Cheers!
It’s nice you’re in a place that allows this kind of paint removal. Where we are, on the NW coast of the US, most yards won’t allow any kind of blasting regardless of the media used. A great way to prep the hull.
Now thats great service ,i bet its not cheap but well worth it
Absolutely awesome job. Getting work done by someone who specializes in your work always pays dividends!
I couldn't watch when your video first popped up ... because I was so afraid that you discovered a major problem with Nandji II. But today after I was finished with my work, and feeling calm ... I decided I could handle whatever it was that you discovered. Whew! What a relief that things were able to be fixed so easily. I was afraid there would be a gaping hole in poor Nandji II. Glad my fears were put to rest. And OMG, she looks beautiful! You guys have done an outstanding job of turning Nandji II into an absolute stunner!
Looks great, and great peace of mind!
Great insight into a big job, looks great. I will definitely keep these guys in mind
fantastic video amazing to see how was fixed so fast with the right people for the job
😀😀👍👍👍❤ Fantastic work Yosh. "Peace of mind" below the water line! (even rhymes) Bye from Seattle, WA. (Northwest USA)
Good job! So much to think about and lessons learned!
Glad you found a good team to help you. Always enjoy your videos. Came over when Max was visiting and still here and loving your content. Best wishes from Western Australia
Hey Josh, the bottom looks great. So nice you didn’t have to do the work. Love your family. ❤
Good for you guys getting that job done by people that specialise and saving time and your energy for the other jobs🧿⚡️all the best to you all🤙🤙🌺🐝🐸🇦🇺
You should make an aluminum rutter
Wow!!! Boat looks amazing.
Saved Yacht Blasts details. Fantastic work
What amazed me was the lack of mess left under the boat. From a health and safety point of view with it being a wet blast there is minimal dust produced for people to breathe.
Wow! That blasting is the business! Good to get this fixed to have a solid hull!
A very nice change of pace video.
yacht blast have really helped you with the yacht and specifically getting your hull sorted. - thats a pretty amazing investment they have made in their kit. lucky to get access to to it Josh
Nandji 2 look sweet! Love the boatwork vids! Can't wait for the sailing!
cruising, fixing yachts in exotic locations
Pride in Ownership!
Nice to see the progress of the cleaning the bottom and hopeful to see the new rig when that happens. Lookng good 😇
That was a interesting interview and run down on blasting.
Doing it right, Yosh ❤ awsome job!
I am a DIY person but some projects are best left to professionals. Pease of mind for your next adventures. Looking forward to watching your travels across the Indian Ocean. Keep up the good work.
Nige, Lewis, brilliant job boys!
Great variety in this channel
How good is that! I'm gonna do it to my Benny Oceanis. And lm still really happy with your boat choice Pal!
good luck mate
I am looking forward to you comming to South Africa. You will enjoy it here. Beatifull country and wonderfull people.
Nice one Josh. I think you are ready now to face the cold water, Croc's and Sharks of South Africa.
Why not dock in Richard's Bay, rent a 4x4 & trailer, buy a comfortable tent, put your dingy on the trailer. Travel north to Ndumo game reserve, go to Kosi Bay, experience SA flat dogs (crocs), Hippos, Fish, Elephants, Bird life, turtles on beaches over Kosi Lake & so much more. Nice trustworthy people up around that area. definitely 4x4 area, less commercialized.
Oh gosh so good to see this Yacht blaster taking care of you and your safety❤ Did the rudder drain dry? And did you have to refoam? Looking beautiful Yosh and Bonita!❤❤
Done right
good job blinky bill
That was very interesting to watch. I did not know that. It took that many layers to put that Back together again. You take care of it. It will take care of you! I noticed in your video. Your daughter is getting so big, Enjoy your time with her. They grow up too fast!
Costs on soda blasting are running $3k+ average in USA on 40’ boat, time to do some grinding, filling and fairing. A proper epoxy barrier coating, fresh bottom paint and you’ll be good to go. 👍
For her age Yosh the gel coating looked pretty good mate though you were right to take her right back to the gel,man i wish they could do that blasting 30 years ago would have saved me many days on the hard stand lol
Just another great episode! Love the way you take care of your yacht/home. That investment is going to pay dividends for years to come. So proud of you all for going the extra mile and doing it right! And besides all that Tallula is learning the skateboard! Win, win, win!!😁👍❤️❤️❤️
Boat looks great. Wonder what the bottom job has cost in Phuket
That is news to ke!😊 never knew or thought that they would go into the ses!! Very interresting, one learn more and more hey! ,thank you so much fot this info. So, our sailing friends have to be on the lookout there!!! Keep your eyes on the waters you two sailors!!😊😊😊❤
Love seeing you guys.. ...in the zone...
Hi guys, I’ll be putting some glass over that bow , especially, if you’re going to sail around the world It’s only my opinion and I’m probably doesn’t mean for much. , Cliff from Australia
Hey mate!! Yosh did end up glassing the bow.. it was a quick timelapse of it at the 12:45 mark! Good call
Try anti cover using one with cayenne pepper infused paint. Seems the sea creatures don’t like to taste works just fine and is newly popular on boats
Great episode - I would have been taking that rudder off and find out where the water is getting in.
Found the problem and glassed 👌 it’s not an easy rudder to remove
Amazing how new tech has advanced coatings…..we used to put two coats of two pack epoxy undercoat, then the while the 3rd coat was still tacky, put the first coat of anti foul on to make it bond.
How much did the whole bottom job cost you?
I'LL believe you!!😂 one cannot underestimate thosr beasts!!😂😂❤❤
Why no barrier coat first? Am I missing something? Sorry if I’m being stupid.
Sorry the epoxy primer is the barrier. Doh. Great job guys. Love your vid’s.
No hippos or crocs in Cape Town..😂😂
Josh, we yust love watching u guys sailing! We are from South Africa, and we are yust smiling about the "crocs and Hippo's, they are not in the sea here, but in the rivers on land😊 we are so pleased your boat is fixed so that your ling yourney can begin!!!❤❤
Our friend had a hippo under his boat in Richard’s bay and has our imagination running wild 🤣
Yeap, Zululand yacht club is well known for the resident hippos popping in for a visit every so often.😮
Never knew that they go to the sea!!! Tnx for that very interresting😊
Cost for that job in Thai would have been interesting. Prop One (Aussie Made) is ~ 1/2 the cost of prop speed. Alternate colour AF is good for wear indicator
We drove around for days trying to find Prop one .. everyone sells it but no one had it in stock.
Yosh is a tad lacking in the stoked dept.😅
He has missed his calling .should have been a car salesman . Tim the demtell man 2 .great job !! Even had scoreboard action .. thanks
We'd scrub the bottom on way out to race, don't fear the water, east cost bugs are tasty, cape abalone, mussels bivalves & so much fish. The fruit is divine, wine is biblical, Biltong & droe" worse!! In spring see Namaqualand Daisies. Watch people watching you, don't go in developed areas you don't know. If in Durban must go to langoustines Sarnia (Pine Town) or by the sea Dbn North have seafood platter, my mouth waters. Enjoy!
AS a paint and blaster it's great to see some Pro's in Thailand that know there shit, Theirs nothing better than getting true pro Paint and Blasters to to give your vessel a great job because we understand profiles and our work. Yes it may cost a bit more than your DIY but they QA there work.
Im glad you hired people for this task, you've worked so hard for so long. Her bottom is gorgeous 😂
Say Hi to my beloved country (sans politics), best waters in the world! nicest people too (careful). visit the game parks in Natal, garden route. We have more species of flowers than all other countries combined!
Do you use millage gauges to insure the coatings are evenly applied? In a past life I had to make sure coatings were overly thinned resulting in poor performance or a coating failure that then results in damage the coatings are intended to protect. I just didn’t understand if millage was an important measurement.
A very valuable process! But someone needs to invent an anti-foul paint that does what it says.
Hey guys unless you are planning to go on our rivers and inland waterways crocs and hippos will not be an issue here! Looking forward to seeing you real soon. Safe sailing.
Our mate had a hippo under his boat in Richards bay .. our imagination has run with it lol
What work did you need to repair the rudder?
Dude go to South Africa Sept. To April it is Summer Time . July and August you will have blue balls because it is a dry cold
As they say many hands make light work.
How much of the rudder did you have to grind out and fill?
Hello. Great information video, a well worth watch for any boat owner. How old is Nandji II. And why black finish paint on the hull. ?
Nandji 2 was launched in 93!
Why black? cause pirates are pirates
What are the four rectangular recesses on the hull near the prop shaft Skeg, do they stay like that or are the filled in !!!
Anodes
Will you need to blast the haul every time you haul out ? Or will you just need to take the top coat off reapply the antifouling then top coat?
No need to blast for years to come!
I’m sorry Yosh..you are a handsome dude..no hate all love, but who cut your hair? You are giving Oompa Loompa vibes! Lol.
What does the owners association say about the water in the rudder ? I fear crevice corrosion
As the boat sat on the hard for a few years, the water would be from the last year 🤞 hoping internally it’s not mush, but the glass is an inch thick. Found the water ingress source, ground back and glassed. No w install a hydrovane as back up!
@@FrothLyfeSailingNandji As long as there is a back up . I have seen what appears to be a fine rudder have the SS web rotted off inside and fail . It is not the glass you need to worry about but the web welded to the shaft that is inside and allows the shaft to turn the fiberglass rudder without just spinning inside .
One back up I saw a guy do was to put a hole in the trailing edge of the rudder so a rope could be tied to it to steer using the winches if the steering gear fails (or the web) . Not ideal , but at least you can steer .
How do you buy a boat in this condition ?
Some things are worth fixing up and we have the drive to do it!! 5 weeks until our Indian Ocean crossing .. it was worth it!
Wild guess 18000.00U.S. for the job. Are you not going to surf in S.A. because of Hippos?
😂 no hippos in the line up
shoudlve sprayed the antifoul on
I don’t like thinners in my antifoul
This is prolly a really dumb question, but has anyone tried ceramic coating a hull ? Like in an automotive coating ?😮
What about a wrap 😮😉
@@davesheffield3620 I'd actually discounted a wrap due to potential moisture traps.
But I like the idea of several layers of peel off like on F1 helmet visor. Just not practical.
Boat Owner - i painted the bottom of my boat and the paint sucked i will never use that garbage paint again , it all peeled off in a week ,, Paint Store - interesting , did you prep the bottom properly and follow manufactures instructions , , Boat Owner - what does prep mean and there are instructions ?
The Cruising kiwis chucked a syringe of ivermectin in their anti foul, and it went great guns!
Lol we dont have Hippos and Crocs all over, South Africa. Only some small parts are they in the ocean.
But we ride the Hippos here thats how we roll here in SA. 😂😂😂 Just joking about the rideing the Hippos.
Our friend had a hippo under his boat in Richard’s bay and it’s got our imagination running wild! I thought all South Africans ride their pet zebras to do the grocery shopping? 😂
We saw a few on easter weekend at Jozini here in KZN. But was inland. Where in SA are you guys traveling to? Safe travels!
Amazing ......It went from a pimply pitted teenager hiding a water pocket to a shiny smooth babies ass!!! I am NOT a sailor but the confidence you must have knowing the condition of your hull and the protection you put on it, must help you sleep good at night. Beautifully done and thanks for explaining everything...
Too busy to clean the bottom? WTF
Yes! The deck took us 3 solid weeks of work which will be coming up in our next video. We are pushing to a schedule to cross the Indian Ocean with a lot of other jobs going on and made the right choice in getting help with the hull!
So they're not vaccuuming up their medium and your own anti-fouling paint ? Where's it going ? 😱
I've got to do the same thing on my new-to-me '96 Kelsall 36 Suncat....barrier coat is peeling right off...somebody didn't prep the fiberglass...gotta strip 36'x2 with grinders....because it's a foam core with fiberglass skins inside and out....I think blasting would be too aggressive (and nobody does it around here...Florida/Georgia, U.S.) 😱
Both my keels were full of water too
The guys did an amazing job cleaning up after the blasting!! You can see how clean it is around the boat. All of the sand was swept up and taken away for disposal. Hope you can find dustless blasting in your area!
Or you could just get your own channel mate.😢😢
This has turned into a boat repair chanel and woe-is-me production. Zzzzzzz
Can’t have the sailing without the boatwork! It’s all part of it. We are preparing the boat for a year of sailing across the Indian Ocean.
Good night..
Remember that sand blasting may not seem like it, but it opens micro pores in the fiber, you will have to recover that gelcoat that is visible.
You are doing a very good job. All the success in the world, you got out of the water on time.
🔩🔧🔨⚒️🛠️⛏️
The entire boat was filled and faired. Cheers
