Cheap Sailboat Has So Many Problems - Ep 285 - Lady K Sailing

  • Опубліковано 9 лип 2024
  • I bought a cheap sailboat and it's bad! It's a Hobie 16 Catamaran sailing dinghy and while it was only a $500 sailboat with a trailer, it's going to take some effort to make the repairs. This series will be all about sailboat repairs, making a sailboat seaworthy, and leaning to repair a sailboat. Hope you enjoy ;)

Bruh this is going to be an awesome series!! I can't wait! My wife and I are currently pouring money into a 1974 o'day 22. including buying a ski boat, giving away the boat, welding on roller bunks to clear the keel, new rigging, rebedding everything, etc.

I just started watching this video, but I can donate a GoPro to the cause. Having a power boat mess with the sailboats sounds like a normal day sailing for me. There's 20 power boats for every sailboat on the lake that I sailed on.

😂 I did the same last year, I got a Mystere 6.0xl almost for free, very good sail with new mast, but the hulls needed some repair.
After the famous last word of the owner “the trailer is ready to hit the road” I pinned on my truck and 2 km from the pickup point I lost one trailer wheel, was late at night.
I dragged without one wheel to a Canadian Tire parking lot 6 km away, sparks everywhere, slept the night in the parking lot, following morning bought two new wheels and bearings, one jack, luckily I had my tools with me, and fixed 😂.
After some tlc now I enjoy it!
I use to race on Dart 18 but this cat flies fast like a Tornado.

Sounds like a fun idea, but I'd suggest super soakers instead of water balloons... No need to throw balloons into the water.

They make ones appropriate for the task. Degradable. We use them in poker runs all the time. No mess.

@@LadyKSailing You know how the internet is... You'll get flamed in the chat if people see you throwing even "biodegradable" balloons in the water... UNLESS you run an experiment first... Have a waterballoon fight with your daughter in your yard. Round up the scraps, and put them in a pile in a corner of your yard. Film how long it takes them to decompose. Post a disclaimer and a small clip at the end of the waterballoons in the water video with how quickly they decompose in your yard... Just a thought. 🤷🏻‍♂️. They MIGHT be "decomposable" just the same as flushable wipes are "flushable." 🤔

The quick research I found is there really isn't a balloon that breaks down. It can take months or longer. Supersoakers are a better idea.

I just bought a 1964 Contest 25-1 for $20. I drove to the DC area to get her with my trailer from my Catalina 22. I did put fresh tires on her and made longer bunk post for it.
I didn't realize how much more the Contest weighed. I was towing it being my 35 ft school bus. I kept my speed at 45 mph or less and stopped every 30 minutes to give the tires a break. I crossed the Eastern Continental Divide and went through Gatlinburg as well.
I managed to transport the boat from Washington DC to North Alabama safely.
Much of the interior is good and because it has no balsa core, the boat is incredibly solid.
The restoration is underway and I can't wait for our future adventures.

I have many years of experience sailing H16s and H18s. 1. Get rid of those dumb bunks and put rollers on the trailer. 2. Buy a set of beach wheels. 3. replace the top of the mast with a Comtip. 4. How solid are the decks in front of the pylons? If they are soft, sell the boat. Trimming the main stresses this area and will cause the foam core to disintegrate. 5. Good luck replacing the springs in the lower rudder castings. They provide pressure on the rudder cam lock bearings that allow you to lock the rudders in the down position and release the rudders when beaching.

    • @jackchamberlain5993

What a pessimist, soft decks are easily addressible if it has not gone too far. I have seen plenty of soft decks Never have I seen one so far gone that you can't fix with thickened epoxy to stiffen up the foam and fill the voids

If the trailer wiring is CCA (copper coated aluminum), you will be redoing it next year. The aluminum degrades/oxidizes to dust in a moisture environment. Got to go with copper and avoid the cheap imports if you are looking for longevity.

Ok. That sounds like an amazing idea. However, I would recommend each boat to get a 360 camera on the boat, and a GoPro on like a bump helmet on the contestant.
That way, you could pull “drive by” shots of the power boats in post production using the 360, and get a point of view from the contestants.
Another option would be a bunch of those insta 360 Go’s. People have zip tied them to birds and gotten good video. They would be small enough to go just about anywhere.
I only recently found your channel. Loving everything so far.

Wow I just bought a Hobie 14 Turbo. I went to New York with a U-Haul to get the boat, no trailer. Last friday I drove 240 miles to get a trailer in Indiana. No title for the boat, a 14 foot sailboat in New York doesn't need a title. I've still got to figure that out. Now that I am retired I'm getting back into sailing, I had a Hobie 18 in the 80's. I'll be right here watching how you are getting your 16 ready to sail again. My next step is the title and then rigging. I like seeing you pull it around with the tractor. I live 200 yards from the lake in my community, I'll be pulling mine to the beach with my Cub Cadet. I might even be able to leave the mast up if I can make it by one tree.

And I'm a totally new sailor who's never sailed "a real sailboat" I put two kayaks together to make a catamaran and rigged it with a wood stairway handrail for a mast, part of an old tent for a sail and paracord rigging.... was basiclly downwind only as I never made a dagger board. I remember racing my 12 ft. Wesort and Laser while learning to sail. It's also when I learned to dislike power boats. Especially the skiers behind them. They would fly by and spray the sails with a wall of water. When in the Wesort I began carrying a paddle to slide across the waters surface as the skier came by. Didn't take long before skiers recognized my boat and stopped spraying.
Think about adding a solo skier behind the power boat.

Good job I have been watching your channel and have decided to get a boat for the first time ever. I want to eventually get to a point I can do the Great American Loop. I live 3 miles from the Mississippi River in the Alton IL area but never had a boat now in my early 60s and retiring soon I want one. Thank you for the inspiration.

Great idea Tim! Let us know how much you end up spending to restore the Hobie (and the trailer). Did you have to make any fixes on the other two (laser and sunfish, I think)?

Great video! I recently bought a Kells 23 trailer sailer, with trailer, and had the joy of needing to repair the trailer. This included welding new 2x4 steel sections to the rotted frame, replacing cracked leaf springs and replacing all 4 wheels (rims were rotted through), replacing the fenders and lights. Had the same issue with the stupid white wire :p. HOWEVER, after all that work, the one thing that caused me no end of grief was the process to get it registered in NB. At some point in the chain of ownership, the paperwork was not maintained, and so there was no paper trail for the boat or trailer, nor was there a VIN on the trailer. Here in NB, the only way around this is to declare it a homemade trailer and get an MVI done. The trailer has now been with an inspector for 2 months while I wait with baited breath to see if it passes after all the effort I put into it. Meanwhile, I do have the boat in the water which I managed on the way to the inspection. The lesson here is: know the rules and process in your area, and if you live somewhere like NB, having the paperwork is easily worth an extra $1000 - $2000 on the sticker price as it avoids the mandatory (buddy holding you and your trailer over a barrel) inspection.

You are so right, getting a registration for your boat trailer in NB is a pain ! Make sure you know what is expected before you buy the trailer/boat.

I traded for the boat I'm cruising on now but I also had it hauled out in a 2 year period and 60k later a boat yard made my boat brand new again

Hobie's are what got me into sailing - too much fun. The rudders are always in need to maintenance due to wear at the pins. Typical.
