    Thanks for going down the line and naming all the vacuum lines. I just did my throttle body and my plenum looked as dirty as yours 😂😂 I just wanted to see if I needed any gaskets of anything. Great video

    Super cool video man! I got a '91 Pickup and '90 4 Runner and need to do the same thing to the 4Runner. My fuel line from the filter to rail cracked on me the other day so had to order one off Ebay. So purchased the plenum gasket and all new Injector o-rings and seals as well. Now that I watched yer video, I'm contemplating whether or not to just buy a new EGR valve as well. I cleaned the throttle body a month ago and it was filthy dirty in there. I can't imagine how dirty the intake will look when I take it apart! LOL. Appreciate this video....thanks!

    Getting ready to disassemble the top end to do the head gasket, and this video is a lifesaver. The intake side of a 22re looks so ominous with all the vacuums lines and stuff. Thanks for breaking it down where my Chilton manual didn't!

    I want to thank you for this video. You posted this the day before I disassembled the top end of my 22re and it was a great help then. Now I've finally got it back together after soooooo much procrastination and I came back to this video and it helped even more.
    I deleted the EGR when I put it back together for the exact reason you wanted to clean your intake. My intake wasnt quite that bad but bad enough that I thought the EGR was doing more harm than good leaving all that carbon buildup in there. Definitely made sure to give the plenum and manifold a good cleaning.

    Good video!
    I did head gasket and timing chain kit just over a year ago, and I wish I had made a video. Luckily, I did take a bunch of pictures, so I got it back together just fine.
    Dang that cold start injector was really dirty. An injector shop can clean it, and get it to working like new.
    I did not do an EGR delete on mine because I had already spent too much money, and buying block off plates was just more money.

    • @tubejim101
      @tubejim101  5 років тому

      How long did it take you to do the head gasket and timing chain kit. Been thinking about the timing chain. Figure if I go that far in, should do a head gasket too.

    • @snippits75
      @snippits75 5 років тому +1

      It took me a few days, but I am old timer now. Back in the day, I could have done it in half the time. A lift would make it go even faster.
      My engine had about 189,000 miles on it when I tore it down. Chain was slapping on cold start up, and the head gasket was bad because I was loosing coolant out of the exhaust.
      I bought an Enginetech complete cylinder head from RockAuto for $250. Just bolt it on. Local automotive machine shop that I trust had a five week wait on rebuilding my cylinder head, and I needed it done now, so I bought the Enginetech cylinder head.
      I used a Cloyes HD timing kit that has the metal timing guide on the drivers side. An OSK timing kit is what Toyota used on these engines, but it comes with the plastic guides. I saved a little bit of money buying the Cloyes HD kit plus I did not have to buy the metal guide. Cloyes makes good stuff.
      My plenum was not nearly as dirty as yours. I am thinking that your EGR valve is probably mostly clogged. The reason is mine was half way clogged with hard carbon where it bolts to the cylinder head. I cleaned it out with a flat head screwdriver, wire brush, and carburetor cleaner.

    • @tubejim101
      @tubejim101  5 років тому

      Thanks for all the info. I have been seeing those cylinder heads for sale. They look like a good deal.

    My '94 4x4 5 speed Xtracab looked just as bad in the intake manifold when I removed it for the first time a year ago (~170k miles). The gunk is from the EGR valve. It took me a bit to figure that out since the gunk is heavy even up at the throttlebody, on the opposite end of the plenum from where the EGR connects. The reason EGR gunk is so far upstream is because the plenum has a passage running from the EGR flange up to right behind the throttle. I didn't notice it until I cleaned the inside of my manifold (which required oven cleaner).
    I didn't want that crud building up again since my pickup already consumes about 2 qts of oil every 3k miles, which is probably why the gunk was so wet looking. Plus I didn't want any higher chances of pinging on 87 octane since oil effectively reduces a fuel/air charge's detonation resistance, so I deleted my EGR before starting it back up again. Also deleted the PAIR system to further simplify things. So far so good.

    • @tubejim101
      @tubejim101  5 років тому

      Have been thinking about doing that too. Did you buy a delete kit, or just make your own block offs?

    • @cbh148
      @cbh148 5 років тому +1

      +tubejim101 I bought the LC Engineering EGR block off plates (the one for the plenum, the one for the intake side of the head near cylinder 4, and the one for the firewall side of the head), then some cheap ebay PAIR block off plates (removed that tube above the exhaust manifold). Blocked off the port on the back of the intake box with a rubber cap for putting on the bottom of a chair leg haha. Also removed the charcoal canister and its vacuum solenoid on the valve cover as well as all the other solenoids up there other than AC idle-up (the grey one with grey plug you pointed out first in the vid). I won't claim that I notice a difference in how it drives, but the engine bay is much easier on the eyes and easier to get to that darn oil filter ha.

    How much work was it preparing both surfaces for a new gasket? I have my plenum off the motor and just now taking steps to clean the carbon out of it. I tried throttle body cleaner, but at $6 a can it would cost me a ton of money and I can't really get to all the areas that need cleaning. Considering oven cleaner or a trip to a automotive machine shop to have them soak it.

    • @tubejim101
      @tubejim101  5 років тому

      First your going to want to remover everything from it. You will have to reset your throttle position sensor when your done. I have a video on how to do that. The best way that I have found, is to take it to your local machine shop, and have them hot tank it. It should not cost that much. I did not find out about that option, till I cleaned it myself. I soaked it for a few days in SuperClean: amzn.to/2OWS6oq

    • @JesusHernandez-lv4rx

      Marlana its a vacuum switching valve. If its a California emissions model it should have 3 of them. You’re talking about the bottom most connector ontop of the valve cover, and by that i mean the one closest to the engine cooling fan. The middle connector has a vacuum overflow exhaust port with a cap and the topmost blue connector ontop of the valve cover is the third vacuum switching valve (vsv). All 3 are vacuum switching valves (vsv) but have different part numbers and specific functions. It’s clearly outlined in the vacuum diagram on the hood. I know because I barely got done replacing the intake manifold gasket along with the gasket that was being replaced as shown in this video, which I would term the middle-of-the-intake-manifold gasket. Removing the entire manifold is more cumbersome in case you wanted to know.

  • @billwithers7457
    @billwithers7457 3 роки тому +3

    I think your engine is burning oil. The burnt oil travels with the exhaust gasses through the EGR line and is injected right behind the throttle plate. This can foul up an intake manifold like yours is.

    • @okbye1

      I have new 22re..it smoked on start after off overnight or hr or so. Did start with plugs out..nothing came out, also did bore scope with pressure on coolant..nothing in cylinders. What in the intake can cause these symptoms? If i pull the intake and look for coolant? Been going though hard times after putting out 3k. Engine runs great otherwise, although it seems to want to vapor lock on start after sitting all night.

    • @billwithers7457
      @billwithers7457 3 роки тому

      @@okbye1 I am no expert, and you should certainly take everything I say with a grain of salt, but my first thought is a bad idle air control valve could be part of the problem if the problem only occurs on cold starts. The IACV takes a small coolant feed that adjusts the air flow through the throttle while at low temperature. This has the potential to cause all sorts of issues when faulty. It's relatively easy to get to and easy to replace. This will also let you check the throttle body and upper intake manifold for any obvious abnormalities like excessive carbon build up. All you'll need is a new throttle body gasket, which is like $2.
      If there's coolant in the intake... well, that's certainly not good. First I'd check your oil and coolant to see if either is contaminated by the other. I presume you've done that. If your coolant isn't contaminated and the cylinders are clear, it's probably not a headgasket issue. If the smoke is dark, it might be that your piston rings are too loose and oil is getting passed the piston at low temperatures, but sealing properly once at operating temperature. I would do a compression check to test that possibility.
      These are just the first thoughts I have and though I've owned a 22re for going on 15 years now, I am far from an expert at troubleshooting it. Before doing any engine work, please consult... someone or something more qualified than me.
