    Just the most tremendous presentation of EGR & Air Injection that I've ever seen. Congratulations on taking a somewhat bewildering and complex system and breaking it down to a concise, simple to understand lesson. Bravo!

    This was absolutely the Best explanation of the EGR system for my 1985 Toyota 4 Runner...Nicely done Bill!!! I have had mine plugged off for over 10 years after I saw my intake...that looked like a cave with stalagtites and stalagmites and more crap than I care to discuss...Very, Very precise and concise!!!

    Great video, thank you. Im a technician myself and just picked up a 22RE as one of my projects, amazing little motor! Ill just add one thing that is very important that anyone considering an EGR delete should know. The reason for the reduced NO(x) from the recirculated exhaust gases, is two fold..it also serves to reduce combustion temperatures, therefore running temperature. Above about 2000F is when molecules get blasted apart in the combustion chamber to form those harmful NO(x) gases. I would be more wary of too hot conditions in a performance motor though, not a 22RE. Thanks again.

    I deleted the egr and air injection on my 1981 22R twenty five years ago. When it was running a little hotter, I put in a 180 thermostat instead of the factory recommended 195, and it runs consistently just below half on the gauge.

    Very good video! Lots of love went into that engine build.
    Secondary air injection had me stumped the first time I had to tear down my 22RE for head gasket and timing chain kit.
    I am on the EGR delete side especially if the vehicle is not subject to emission testing. Bitmetal switching valve and EGR modulator both gone. Spaghetti vacuum line mess gone. No more throttle body and intake plenum black goo/crud.

    Thanks for explaining those two systems. I thought they were all part of the egr system. In the early 2000s I "deleted" the egr from my truck thinking I was freeing up some hp. Truth was, I didn't understand how it functioned back then. Now I once again have another truck with the same 22re and I'm keeping it all factory.
    I saw the air injection system mentioned a couple times in my factory service manuals but didn't know what it was referring to til just now your video popped up in my feed. Learned something new today! Thanks

    the statement that you will have worse gas mileage if you delete your egr contradictory to what I have found. I actually got the same mileage when I removed mine, however when I tore my motor down to rebuild (about 240,000 miles later) I had no more carbon build up in the plenum. I recommend removing the egr if your laws allow it.

    Great explanation very well done.. I had to learn quite a bit about the air injection system because I have a 22R motor and it relies more on the air injection system than the 22RE motor does I believe due to the carburetor. I was getting code 25 fuel lean forever and checked everything even changing the O2 sensor didn't do anything. Went days running fine no codes then 3/4 Days Later code 25 shows up again.. anyways I was going to ask you what did you do with the air injection pipe that attaches to the header you said on the video you were going to make one if so please show us what you did. thanks again good stuff!!!

    great video. I live in a county in PA that does not require any emission requirements or testing for inspection. If I do remove both EGR and Air intake on my 1993 pickup will the controlling computer care, and give me some kind of engine lights.

    • @techenstein
      @techenstein  6 років тому +1

      For EGR delete, you need to simulate the temp sensor that is on the back of the intake plenum where the EGR connected in. A 10K ohm resistor is all you need. It's a two wire sensor so just use the old sensor connector and wire it in, and tuck back into the rest of the wire harness. There is no sensor for air injection delete and if you already deleted your cat convertor, it's not doing anything anyway. You should keep your first O2 sensor in the pipe though. That is the heart of the EFI system and controls your mixture. The second O2 sensor, if you have one, *might* be optional but it's just as easy to leave it on place.

    • @snippits75
      @snippits75 6 років тому

      My 92 22RE does not have an EGR temp sensor from factory. I think the EGR temp sensor might be a California equipped thing...not exactly sure. No factory knock sensor either.
      If you remove the EGR, you can either remove the bimetal switching valve, or disconnect the two vacuum lines to the bimetal switching valve on the front of the intake. Then from there you can remove the EGR modulator...the round hockey puck looking thing. Afterwards, viola,. you can remove most all the vacuum spaghetti. Cap off the three vacuum ports on the throttle body too.

      They way they test here doesn't really activate the air injection system so it wouldn't effect the tailpipe during the dyno test, but the tech should be looking for it to be present. I would just keep going to the same place and not say anything.
