Just the most tremendous presentation of EGR & Air Injection that I've ever seen. Congratulations on taking a somewhat bewildering and complex system and breaking it down to a concise, simple to understand lesson. Bravo!
Great video, thank you. Im a technician myself and just picked up a 22RE as one of my projects, amazing little motor! Ill just add one thing that is very important that anyone considering an EGR delete should know. The reason for the reduced NO(x) from the recirculated exhaust gases, is two fold..it also serves to reduce combustion temperatures, therefore running temperature. Above about 2000F is when molecules get blasted apart in the combustion chamber to form those harmful NO(x) gases. I would be more wary of too hot conditions in a performance motor though, not a 22RE. Thanks again.
This was absolutely the Best explanation of the EGR system for my 1985 Toyota 4 Runner...Nicely done Bill!!! I have had mine plugged off for over 10 years after I saw my intake...that looked like a cave with stalagtites and stalagmites and more crap than I care to discuss...Very, Very precise and concise!!!
I just removed the head for a burnt valve. this is the first time I worked the 22r-e. it so simple. I am so lucky it came to me. it brings back my HS shop class. but I did not have to adjust the dwell angle. thank you, Toyota... and thank you for the lesson on this beauty.
Thank you so much for this! I'm starting a rebuild and assumed I'd want to remove these systems, but after your perfect explanations I'm planning to keep them. You've made sense of the madness.
I too live in California and get hit up every two years for smog. Your video help me understand what the egr does and why. Thank you. I think my numbers will be better this coming probing. Keep up the good work!
Very good video! Lots of love went into that engine build. Secondary air injection had me stumped the first time I had to tear down my 22RE for head gasket and timing chain kit. I am on the EGR delete side especially if the vehicle is not subject to emission testing. Bitmetal switching valve and EGR modulator both gone. Spaghetti vacuum line mess gone. No more throttle body and intake plenum black goo/crud.
I deleted the egr and air injection on my 1981 22R twenty five years ago. When it was running a little hotter, I put in a 180 thermostat instead of the factory recommended 195, and it runs consistently just below half on the gauge.
Thank you. I never realized how complicated all that equipment is. I live in California, taking my 1990 Toyota pickup in for smog retest, and trying to understand the system. It's very technical and delicately balanced... clearly, one needs much experience to diagnose a failure in that system.
This is the best technical video i have seen on this subject. I have a 81 22R and most of the information here seems to apply as well. Nice work and beautiful engine and garage
Great explanation of the EGR and AI. I have a 2WD pickup 22RE and was curious on the function, how it exactly works, and it's related parts. I also live in CA so all these parts have to stay on. Great post and keep bringing the 22RE info!!!
Thanks for explaining those two systems. I thought they were all part of the egr system. In the early 2000s I "deleted" the egr from my truck thinking I was freeing up some hp. Truth was, I didn't understand how it functioned back then. Now I once again have another truck with the same 22re and I'm keeping it all factory. I saw the air injection system mentioned a couple times in my factory service manuals but didn't know what it was referring to til just now your video popped up in my feed. Learned something new today! Thanks
@@deadjoey77 no it's not worth it. It only circulates that hot exhaust gas at cruising with part throttle and no load where it actually helps fuel economy.
That 22RE engine is beautiful! I have a Toyota Celica GTS Convertible that has a 22RE all original but it does not look like that. I wish... I must say these 22RE Engines are very reliable. Thanks for sharing this video.
Awesome vid! Been waiting for the full explanation on the systems. I'm constantly back and forth trying to get answers on line and so far its all as what you've explained. Thanks!
Thank you for explaining it to me, very helpful. I was thinking of doing an EGR delete because I didn't know what it did and I've seen others remove it. However I will definitely keep it and save some gas lol.
I've had every generation of Celica except for the last. All I have left is an RA 29. I've had three Supras gen 1 2 and 3. 1uzfe is the Pudu my friend.
Packed full of valuable info. You should make more videos like this then implement ads to monetize them. Explain all of the EFI elements in the same way.

Firstly l live in Australia and l own a Toyota Hilux with a 22R engine l like it and l am retired and its my hobby ute l work on it and have done a lot of nothing to do with removing the engine or anyyhing major thanks to the 22R /RE engine been so popular in the USA parts availability is excellent any part l have needed l can get from a local spare parts shop and other parts l have had to have my whole exhaust system replaced no problem there to pass the yearly regestration inspection and with that inspection no emission test so l can keep driving it because it has a carburetor and no cat converter the 22RE engine was available in the 1980s Toyota Corona Avante
Super helpful. Have you heard if taking off air injection will overheat/damage the catalytic converter at all, with the less oxygen it’s fed making it harder to burn the hydrocarbons?
It's funny I was thinking that the air injection pipe looked really nice and clean, I wish mine looked like that. Then you proceeded to call it a "nasty rusty looking thing" LOL
the statement that you will have worse gas mileage if you delete your egr contradictory to what I have found. I actually got the same mileage when I removed mine, however when I tore my motor down to rebuild (about 240,000 miles later) I had no more carbon build up in the plenum. I recommend removing the egr if your laws allow it.
I agree!! This reduced pumping loss and strain it causes usually just wear out the bearings a lil more. But this is a 22re guys. Slap on a catch can and let er rip
Thanks for this video! Lots of useful info. My 22r is currently getting rebuilt on my 82. Considering getting headers like you have on this. Do you think an LCE header is worth the investment? Just want your honest opinion! Thanks
Yea the LCE headers are a pretty good bang for the buck. Not too difficult to install and a noticeable HP boost. I had EFI but I am guessing that on a carb motor it would be easier to tune as well.
hello good video thank you very much, will you know the difference between flat and convex pistons in 22r engine? I need to know 🙏 my car requires poan pistons and by mistake I bought convex ones 😭

I would say its the best explanation I have seen yet in regards to doing an EGR Delete on a 22re. Much appreciation for the information.
dutly13 I TOTALLY AGREE.
Great so through

Wow!! Finally someone tells me what I needed to know bout an EGR delete!! Thank u so much
Thanks for explaining the whole system. By far the best video on UA-cam. Straight and to the point. Thanks

Makes me sick!
Great Detailed and not overwhelmed explanation...Thanks Bill
Wow... VERY informative and very well presented! Best explanation I've ever seen on those two systems on a 22RE.
Thank you so much for this! I'm starting a rebuild and assumed I'd want to remove these systems, but after your perfect explanations I'm planning to keep them. You've made sense of the madness.

Excellent video and information. Best 12 mins spent on youtube.
This video is Gold standard for 22re egr

so you dont think its worth it to do the delete? it seems like colder air/gas would be better because of it?
@@deadjoey77 no it's not worth it. It only circulates that hot exhaust gas at cruising with part throttle and no load where it actually helps fuel economy.
@@kimokahikolekalihiyou’re an idiot if you think egr is good
Good video, you’re in cali but you can still run the egr unplugged and slip a plate in between where it goes in the intake manifold
Man! This is by far the best explanation of this whole system I’ve seen! Thanks! And beautiful 22re by the way.
Thoroughly and clearly explained. Great video!
Great video! clear, simple, and easy to understand.

Thanks for explaining so it makes sense to me a non technical guy! You’re infoowas very useful and I’m glad I took the time to hear you out👍.
Great explanation of EGR and what it does. Thanks.

Absolutely great explanations!...thanks for taking the time! Cheers from Connecticut!
Fantastic video, and thank you so much for the great explanation. I'm looking forward to seeing more videos of you progress
Wow. I want my 22RE to be this clean and well loved.
Sir you’re a master thanks for the advice!!
Excellent , very informative and educational.
Great information, high five 🖐 for actually explaining this , I’m converting a 84 carb to a 92 low impedance injection, should be great... should....
Thank you for explaining it to me, very helpful. I was thinking of doing an EGR delete because I didn't know what it did and I've seen others remove it. However I will definitely keep it and save some gas lol.
Such an informative video. Thank you.
I swear these at the time were built ahead of it's time ! I have 85 GTS celica im working on !
I've had every generation of Celica except for the last. All I have left is an RA 29. I've had three Supras gen 1 2 and 3. 1uzfe is the Pudu my friend.
Same here. In fact It’s my daily
Merci pour les informations vraiment complètes. Bonne continuation
You're a god damn legend for this explanation bro! Thanks for the video. HAvent looked yet but I hope you make some more informative 22RE videos!
Really well explained! love the video now I understand what all this stuff actually does.
Variable valve timing eliminated the need for an EGR system with reduced induction, thus reduced combustion pressures at cruising speeds.
Excellent explanation and great video. Thanks for providing the information that I needed.
Packed full of valuable info. You should make more videos like this then implement ads to monetize them. Explain all of the EFI elements in the same way.
The best. Thanks for sharing. Please post more videos of anything related to 22R(E).
Great video. Wonderful information. Thanks!
Really great explanation! Good looking motor as well.
great video. You just answered a lot of questions
Thanks for sharing this video, interesting and informative. Useful and good 👍 information.

Question’: how did you paint the block and cover do you have a video?
Love what did with that motor! the truck is sweet also
Very informative.
Good video and what’s a beautiful 22re
This was very helpful. Thanks
good quality of the video. thanks for this very informative lesson.
My engine wasn’t that clean and nice looking 30 years ago! Great explanation.

Dude..Im painting my valve cover like that when I rebuild the top end.👍🏻👍🏻
Great explanation also a great video
Outstanding video. Thank you!!
Best explanation ever 👍 ,Can you ad a filter to prevent oil coming back to the manifold?
The engineers at Toyota were brilliant in creating the 22RE motor. I’ll trust their ingenuity and keep the EGR system.

Where can I get an air injection “tube” that attaches to the exhaust manifold block, my “tube” crack?
Would the EGR/Injection delete have any affect on the fuel/air mixture when passing through the O2 Sensor?
