  • Nothing like having to take off your intake manifold for the 10th time. Mental note: use RTV sealant around coolant passages...

    Oh brother. You'll get her. I was going through my whole intake. After series of super inconvenient problems, i finally have my truck tuned and running great. Glad I haven't had a leak yet I used the felpro with the red seal. Good luck

      Thanks man... just finished getting the lower intake runners back on the head over here about 15 minutes ago. I ended up using the Fel-pro with the red seal stuff, as well as a thin layer of Ultra Black RTV on both sides. So that should hold I think. Fun times over here this weekend haha.

    Use the felpro gasket for that I used it on mine and it was cherry also maybe block sand the intake flange to see if there’s any low high spots

      Yeah I ended up going with the Fel-pro and some ultra black RTV sealant on both sides. I checked my notes and had done that routine in the past and it seemed to seal up real nice. A couple years ago I did sand the intake flange on my granite surface plate with some 400# sand paper... it's still pretty much good to go; there's a little pitting around the water passage areas, but nothing too major. I just got everything bolted back up to the motor about 15 minutes ago. Should be race ready over here in a couple more days! :-)

    Hi Ray. Did you send the intake out to be chkd and cleaned or did you do it yourself?..thks..jc

    • @ray5961
      @ray5961  Рік тому +1

      I cleaned it myself in the kitchen sink upstairs. I might have some videos showing that, not sure. I soaked it over night in water that had Bar Keepers friend in it (bar keepers has acid in the powder). Then lots of scrubbing with a toothbrush and wooden chopstick to clean the small areas out. The acid in the bar keepers gives it a sort of shine, since it etched down into the surface a touch I think. I also sometime use high concentrations of citric acid baths to clean parts like the intake and that works pretty well as far as shining everything up. I did have to block sand the logo area on the upper plenum and sprayed the black part with wrinkle finish VHT paint.

    I just replaced my engine, and used the gasket kit that came with it (felt type), and decided to try the Toyota pink coolant this time. What a mistake - everything leaked - even my hoses that had never leaked before. So, performed a complete drain and flush, and replaced my manifold gasket with a FelPro, and used black RTV for every other connection (as opposed to Gray previously, which leaked everywhere). That new Toyota pink coolant is almost an oil, and perhaps not made for older engines and gaskets - especially not for use with Permatex Gray!

    • @ray5961
      @ray5961  6 місяців тому +1

      I feel your pain :) Yeah, I use Zerex red asian coolant here. The grey RTV is for shit... I only ever use the RTV Ultra black stuff now. The grey stuff might come in handy if you are working with a race motor and need to tear it down over the weekend between races.. but for the rest of civilization that is driving on public highways for 100K miles at a time, you cannot beat UltraBlack RTV. They also have one called Optimum or something.. which is better than the grey, but it's slightly different than the black. I did some testing a while back and decided to stick to the Ultra Black at the end of the day. The Optimum stuff is very close but slightly different (I can't remember if it stuck less but was more flexible or if it was more flexible but didn't stick as well or what). Anyway, yeah, Ultra black RTV only from here on out. They ain't messing around with coolant these days either.. like you say, it's next level slippery. I had to ditch all my $$$ Silicone hoses, because the coolant got past those like they weren't even there. Fun times.

    The regular paper type seal just like the stock OEM works perfectly fine

    • @ray5961
      @ray5961  Рік тому +1

      I don't know how many times you've installed the intake runner on the 22RE or which specific gaskets you have tried, but RTV sealant around those passage ways is always a good idea. With factory brand new parts, you might be able to get away with a good quality paper style OEM gasket, such as Victor Reinz, but when dealing with an old intake manifold, RTV is good insurance - especially when you consider a water leak on the interior could lead to a catastrophic engine failure due to hydro locking a cylinder. For my money, the extra insurance of RTV is worth it. Perfect brand new parts straight from Toyota, okay sure, but we are all dealing with 30 year old motors here.

    • @lexannaamnell6593
      @lexannaamnell6593 Рік тому

      @@ray5961 well I haven't really made a career out of installing the runners but I have done quite a few as well as water pumps and in my personal experience a clean seal with just a regular paper gasket is always worked just fine. I recently had to redo the gasket on my water pump because I foolishly used a gasket type adhesive similar to RTV and essentially what it did was make the mating surface uneven. Using RTV also makes it harder to get the gasket material off should you have to remove something. Honestly though if I was to choose any sealant to use on an intake manifold it would be copper spray, I always use it on my head gaskets and I've never had any problems.

    • @ray5961
      @ray5961  Рік тому +1

      @@lexannaamnell6593 Yeah, I've made that same mistake with the water pump; for whatever reason it doesn't like any sealant at all on there. I think in the video I showed, the issue was more related to that specific gasket, because it was almost more like a plastic sort of material. Had it been more like the 2nd one I used (which was more paper-like, then maybe I wouldn't have ended up with a leak). I've used cooper spray on head gaskets before, although these days I have switched to using a kevlar / teflon head gasket without anything extra in the mix. Never a dull moment working on cars, let me tell ya :)

    • @ray5961
      @ray5961  Рік тому +1

      @@lexannaamnell6593 Thanks a lot :) Yeah, the catch can is working really well now that the correct size piston rings are in there :) I have the PCV adjusted so that it pulls 1/2 in/Hg under most load situations and more like 1 inch under heavy loads (this is taking into account the fresh air breather, so if the crankcase was sealed, it might be pulling 3-4 inches of vacuum). But yeah, it's catching oil fine now. I've been seeing around 1 oz of oil every 250 or so miles, so it's at a comfortable level. I've tried running higher crankcase vacuum levels, but the motor doesn't seem to like it. Too much oil ends up in the catch can and things just don't seem to run well and there is not appreciable gains in power. All in all, seems to be working real well these days. I got rid of the little dipstick thing and put a M6x1.00 bolt in there. It's just as easy to unscrew the catch can and look inside as using that silly dipstick, plus its O-ring can leak when occasionally, which can cause issues on the freeway, etc.

      @@monkeynts Yeah, I went back and checked my notes for this motor and the first time around I did a thin coat of RTV Ultra black on the gasket and the 2nd time I did RTV just around the edge of the water passages and gasket chinch on the rest (which explains why it was so hard to get the gasket off this time haha). I ended up doing RTV ultra black this most recent time. I'm about to use a bore scope to check that nothing squeezed out around the intake runners. I'll see if I can capture that and put it on the next video. Factory gaskets are usually really nice quality. Stoner brand or something right?
