And that is why this is, and will forever remain, an unrecognized masterpiece. I agree with Mike!! Hey Mike I am in awe of your voices in this video and ALL of your videos really. I’m a drummer with nominal guitar and keyboard ability. I can’t sing and play at the same time, which is VERY FRUSTRATING. But I’m trying. I was practicing Rush, Tears last night on the guitar 🎸 and thought “Hey Mike Massie should be playing this song. Ever do it?

Seven and a half years later and this is still the canonical version of this song in my head. Whenever I imagine this is the version I hear. And it was two dudes in a Pizzeria on a random august saturday. Unbelievable, Mike. You guys really did something special.
Watched this for probably the 30th time tonight, 5 months after this comment, and I couldn't have said it better. The harmony is this cover is so spot on, and the final chorus blows my mind. The definitive best Africa cover out there.

The audience seemed to know exactly what they were going to be hearing. SO now damn you UA-cam - I have to spend hours checking out THESE guys too!! Isn't it enough I have to watch all the old Allman Bros, Lou Reed, Marshall Tucker, etc. videos?
Jeff Moehlenbruck Right on, man. These guys are playing in some Pizza shop in Utah and from what it looks like, in the middle of the day. I took the light applause as a polite gesture to something they're use to hearing. To be loud would be obnoxious. How lucky they are to stop in for some pizza and music of this quality. I'd pay $10 a slice if I knew it would come with live music of this caliber.
Everyone went Gaga over Weezer's version of this song. In my opinion, Mike and Jeff put Weezer to shame. This is the best cover of this song I've Ever heard!
Still arguably the greatest cover of any song I've heard. Ever. I also have to say, without taking away the absolute brilliance of Mike's musical prowess, Jeff Hall's harmony on the vocals during this song was literal perfection. One of the first songs I added to my Favourites many years ago. It will always remain.

This is why UA-cam exists. For all of us who didn't have the opportunity to hear this stellar performance of Africa at The Pie Pizzeria in South Jordan, UT, we at least have this recording. And so glad we do! This isn't just my favorite cover song, this is my favorite video of all time on UA-cam. Hats off to Mike Masse (those vocals!!) and Jeff Hall (that bass!). Wow.
Every now and again, like a few minutes ago, I get that "I need to watch Mike Masse singing Africa" feeling. Until next time Mike, and my god there will be a next time, thanks again.
James Wilkins correct. That has been my life ever since I saw this like 4 years ago. I doubt I've gone 3 months since without thinking.. "better check out the best cover of any song ever again.." can't believe I lived in Utah my whole life until the Military moved me away 8 years ago and I never got to see these fellas Jam.
A man who plays bass and sings the harmony is someone who voluntarily plays "second fiddle" to ensure the perfect song; that's a man with music in his soul.
+Antic Kev I came to the comments to find this or start the conversation myself. He is spot-on, and on such an iconic song the harmonies will either make or break the cover. Jeff nails it!
I've listened to this cover dozens of times. It's like an antidepressant. The sound these two produce is miraculous and they fill me with life again. Thank you🙏✌👍💙
My wife and I must have watched this cover at least 100 times and it never gets old and always puts a smile on our faces! Probably hands down the best cover I’ve ever heard. Mike and Jeff your voices are amazing. Big fan and will continue to be. Thanks for the great music!
I’ve been watching this cover on UA-cam for years, and I always find myself coming back to it. You two really shine together as musicians, and I’ve yet to hear a better cover of Africa. So pleasing to my ears!
Mike Masse Oh Man!!! You know the Tenacious D!!!! I'm your fan brother! Brazil are your fan. We need musicians like you!! Thanks for answering. Great UA-camr!
Hello Mike, my name is Albert, I live in the south of Spain. I just wanted to let you know how much your music has inspired me as a struggling musician and especially in the last year, my wife left me for another man after 8 years together, I was devastated and broke, but from viewing your videos and listening to your singing, I built up the courage to keep on gigging and started writing and managed to record my own album. Nine months after this happened, I now earn a living with regular gigs. I´m sure you have heard this story a thousand times, but you really helped me get through and I want to thank you and Jeff Hall...and all your musicians. Amazing syncronicity between you guys, most of your covers are all better than the original singers.(i bet they know that too..haha). Anyway...thanks for your voice, good luck and keep rocking. Alberto.
Alberto, do let us know where we can see you perform. One day i hope to travel to the South of Spain and would love to see such passion come to life in a performance. Cheers and all the best.
I was raised by an amazing pianist who taught gospel harmonies. As kids, we were always taught to sing harmony with whoever was on the radio. I know harmony, and these guys are absolutely amazing!
I was visiting relatives in Utah and was at this live.....It blew my mind! Still the best acoustic cover of Africa ever done. The smattering of applause afterward was ridiculous... it deserves a stadium full of people applauding and losing their minds.
I think Jeff's laughter was the understanding that they'd just done the best cover of any song, anywhere, ever and that only about 8 people understood that at the time. And here we are 16 million views later. Incredible.
I love the bass player! Sitting there in his Hawaiian shirt and cap, crushing every aspect of this song. Banger bass playing, just picking away…. amazing harmonies.
I'm not kidding. I get teary eyed every time I watch and it's been a alot over the years. Two regular dudes in shorts and concert tshirts working for tips pouring everything they got into a classic. I always show my kids this...no doubt the best cover on UA-cam.
I come back every now and again just to hear the cover of this song. What an absolute masterpiece. Not just the lead vocal here, but that sweet sweet harmony in perfect unison. Ugh. Perfection.
Steve Lukather was on a youtube channel talking about how they made this song (I think it was called History of Rock). The host asks if he ever checks out peoples covers of the song on youtube, and Steve said that he did, and then was asked what was your favorite. He said that this video right here was one of the best covers he has ever heard of the song. He said it was amazing what two guys in a pizza joint could do. That's some high praise. Well done Mike. Wishing you much success.
We just watched the video with toto re Africa on the rock professor… That’s where seen a small clip of this and decide to come over and check out the whole video! Outstanding
I feel rather sorry for those people walking past the windows outside, unaware they're missing one of the most immortal renditions of any pop song ever.
This video just never, ever gets old. I'm not sure how I found this, but at the time, the notion of somebody this talented playing at a pizzeria just absolutely blew my mind. It still does, actually. I wonder if the folks who got to watch these gigs fully understood how fortunate they were to be getting this kind of brilliant performance.
Mike was a legal attorney but quit to make music. from what i understand, he has met with and occasionally records with a few members from the band Boston.
I'm still listening in 2022, to that perfect rendition of this song from you 2 guys ! Years after years, it blow my heart away, every time ! Thank you so very much ! If you ever travel via Québec, let me know !
Every time I watch this I just laugh because it's SO FUCKING GOOD!! It's by far the best cover version of this song ever done. And the fact that it's two guys in a pizza shop makes it all the more hysterical. The best part is when they finish the song, you hear like 5 people applaud and 1 guy say "that was great" and they start to laugh. They know they just totally killed it and it's like 1 guy there appreciating it...I would have been losing my mind!! That is just a stellar performance. Love it!
I’ve watched at least four times in less than a month. Never get tired of it. It’s sooooo INTENSE. the passion is emotionally deafening. Arguably the best thing they have done together. Did I say I like it?
totally, I was so caught up on the song I was actually expecting an apotheotic cheer at the end, and then the 4 guys clapping was my "down to earth" moment
Everything about this is so PERFECT. The voices, the sounds, the harmonies, the guitar, the bass, the amplification. Everything. Personally, my favourite cover EVER. Mike's voice is so beautiful
Certainly one of those rare moments where you realize what your witnessing is just so unbelievably great that it becomes the measure that you hold all others too... I mean I loved the original yet it was like I'm hearing something fimilar for the first time, how can that happen!?
I feel the same. I would say this and Jeff Buckley's version of 'Hallelujah' are my all time favorite covers. Boyce Avenue do some good stuff too, but this cover right here is what I love about music. The hidden corners. Imagine being in that place on the day this was recorded. Imagine if it never got recorded. It's just bloody wonderful.
Mike's crystal clear voice is just staggering, but how Jeff holds back before the chorus, like at 1:22, just supporting, and then goes all in right after is all the magic! His harmonies are the shit! Best cover ever, as everyone knows.
I kinda think they're just stunned and busy trying to pick their jaw up off the floor. Personally if I was there and I had no idea who these guys were i'd be like WTF? Where did that come from? Did that just really happen? f
scientific research has shown that people don't give a shit about live street music, they put a professional violinist in a top orchestra and put him with his expensive violin in a subway station and no one stopped to listen
Roland Kramer I wouldn’t call that scientific research. It’s an interesting video but it’s obviously going to be manipulated to an extent to add more drama to the scene. Also, putting someone in the subway at a busy time isn’t a very ideal place. People are busy and don’t have much time to stand around on the way to work and the like
Absolutely mind blowing! I lucked across this many years ago, and watch it whenever it pops up on my TL. I will never be able to process the fact this is in some random Pizza place in front of 3 men and a dog. Folk waiting for food & being treated to the most legendary cover of all time. I mean, Jesus, Mary, Joseph & the wee donkey!! You couldn’t make this stuff up. One of the best things on the internet❤️❤️
This sounds like a solid 'Africa' cover, right up until 'Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you!' And then the jaw drops and the shivers come up the spine. Well done, boys.
Did the customers even realize that they were witnessing the greatest cover of Africa, ever? I hope the miserable people that down voted this are doing alright.
"Ok, two dudes in shorts, slumped in the chairs, baseball cu- " *[music starts]* "Oh, sounds ok, a little simplifie-" *[starts singing]* "Whoa, dude's got a voice, this is pretty nice, very cle-" *[other guy sings 1 bar]* "this is actually REALLY nice, I'm gonna liste-" *[chorus starts]* [My jaw drops, and continues to remain dropped for 3 minutes]

I'm kinda heading that way too.
Wow.
The bass AND the harmonies.
Ive watched this so many times I lost track. Never gets old. I nominate Jeff and Mike to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Every now and again, like a few minutes ago, I get that "I need to watch Mike Masse singing Africa" feeling.
Until next time Mike, and my god there will be a next time, thanks again.
James Wilkins that's basically my life in one sentence.
James Wilkins same here! And that has been going on for 3/4 years now?
So much this
James Wilkins correct. That has been my life ever since I saw this like 4 years ago. I doubt I've gone 3 months since without thinking.. "better check out the best cover of any song ever again.." can't believe I lived in Utah my whole life until the Military moved me away 8 years ago and I never got to see these fellas Jam.
and what a life it is!
This has always been a favorite song of mine and this cover is ridiculously beautiful.
A man who plays bass and sings the harmony is someone who voluntarily plays "second fiddle" to ensure the perfect song; that's a man with music in his soul.
And that boys and girls is the epitome of how backup harmony can make a great cover into something sublime ... kudos to the bass guy !!!!!!
Wife: So, is that the original group doing this acoustic or what?
Me: No, it's two guys at a pizzeria.
Wife: wow...
Right!!!!???? these guys are fantastic and their harmonies are outstanding.... at a Pizzeria....
Why can't we have these guys at my local Pizza Express?
That's what I want to know.
Yeah.....almost as good as the "original group" 😄
I think they should start a Pizza Place circuit
I want this guys to play in our jollibee. Hahaha
I drink whisky, and listen to Mike Masse covers! Pretty much makes for a perfect night!
I hear ya buddy, for me it's wine that does the trick though.
Sweet!
lol
Ah Snap! That's what I'm doin
Same here! :)
13 years and hundreds of views later... this gem will live on and be enjoyed many generations
I can honestly say I've listened to this at least 1000 times. The harmonies are incredible.
I can't believe people aren't talking more about Jeff's harmonies! They're amazing!!
+Antic Kev - Hell yes! My favourite part of this amazing cover.
+Antic Kev I know exactly what you are saying, the focus is on Mike's lead but the 2 of them together....OMFG
+Antic Kev Str8 up!!
+Antic Kev I came to the comments to find this or start the conversation myself. He is spot-on, and on such an iconic song the harmonies will either make or break the cover. Jeff nails it!
+Antic Kev Bang on - they are perfect harmonies
I've listened to this cover dozens of times. It's like an antidepressant. The sound these two produce is miraculous and they fill me with life again. Thank you🙏✌👍💙
Happy to hear it!
I agree
My wife and I must have watched this cover at least 100 times and it never gets old and always puts a smile on our faces! Probably hands down the best cover I’ve ever heard. Mike and Jeff your voices are amazing. Big fan and will continue to be. Thanks for the great music!
It was perfect..
Yes, yes & yes!
I’ve been watching this cover on UA-cam for years, and I always find myself coming back to it. You two really shine together as musicians, and I’ve yet to hear a better cover of Africa. So pleasing to my ears!
Same here. Keep returning (and get impressed)
same bro lol
Returning listener myself. It's too good
Same here over a decade now and still the best. So much has happened in those years and this song is one of the very few constants. ❤
Same
Wtf? Be you angels? Congratulations guys. Most beautiful cover that I see... Brazil loves you!
+Leonardo Malheiros Nay, we are but men. Rock!
Mike Masse Oh Man!!! You know the Tenacious D!!!! I'm your fan brother! Brazil are your fan. We need musicians like you!! Thanks for answering. Great UA-camr!
+Mike Massé Best comment Tenacious D... Rock on guys
Right? Hell if I didn't know any better, I'd think they were the actual singers.
lmfao that reference tho.
The vocals are just unbelievably amazing.
Hello Mike,
my name is Albert, I live in the south of Spain. I just wanted to let you know
how much your music has inspired me as a struggling musician and especially in
the last year, my wife left me for another man after 8 years together, I was
devastated and broke, but from viewing your videos and listening to your
singing, I built up the courage to keep on gigging and started writing and
managed to record my own album. Nine months after this happened, I now
earn a living with regular gigs. I´m sure you
have heard this story a thousand times, but you really helped me get through
and I want to thank you and Jeff Hall...and all your musicians. Amazing
syncronicity between you guys, most of your covers are all better than the
original singers.(i bet they know that too..haha). Anyway...thanks for your
voice, good luck and keep rocking. Alberto.
Thanks for sharing that, Alberto. So glad to hear it! Best of luck with your music.
Alberto where can we see you?
Stay strong, brother
Alberto, do let us know where we can see you perform. One day i hope to travel to the South of Spain and would love to see such passion come to life in a performance. Cheers and all the best.
forza alberto, saludo de portugal
I was raised by an amazing pianist who taught gospel harmonies. As kids, we were always taught to sing harmony with whoever was on the radio. I know harmony, and these guys are absolutely amazing!
Perfeito muito perfeito
I was visiting relatives in Utah and was at this live.....It blew my mind! Still the best acoustic cover of Africa ever done. The smattering of applause afterward was ridiculous... it deserves a stadium full of people applauding and losing their minds.
I think Jeff's laughter was the understanding that they'd just done the best cover of any song, anywhere, ever and that only about 8 people understood that at the time.
And here we are 16 million views later. Incredible.
God! You were in the right place at the right time. 👏
That’s absolutely incredible that you heard this live. I’ve been listening for years on UA-cam. What a perfect cover. These guys are so talented.
@@ohiodungbeetleexactly my thoughts. Perfect world-class performance and the audience can’t even comprehend it.
@@donmich3332 I think you got trolled.
I hereby declare ‘unplugged at the pizzeria’ the best unplugged gig of all time. Sorry Kurt...
Best comment. Ever.
😅 for real tho
Lolz
Please dont imply that Nirvana's Unplugged was superior to Alice In Chains'
Dont do my kurtis dirty like that
It’s 2018 and I still believe this is the very best cover on UA-cam.
H.R. Chesterfield
That's because it is my man!
Now it's 2019, and it's still the best.
2024 🫡 still is 💯
I love the bass player!
Jeff Funk biggest mood
It stays at the top of my FB page..
Just checking back, yup still legendary.
same.
I come back every now and again just to hear the cover of this song.
What an absolute masterpiece. Not just the lead vocal here, but that sweet sweet harmony in perfect unison.
Ugh. Perfection.
Same here.
Like, right now.
Yep, stopping by to drink it in again!
March 31, 2023
Literally one of the best covers of all time (and this channel is full of incredible covers already!!!)
I think I found what you are talking about:
ua-cam.com/video/aPoXnkKk4wE/v-deo.html
He said they met Mike recently. How cool!
He told Mike he sang it better than Toto when they met.
Yeah I saw that too, that's how I found this. Can't believe I'd never come across it before.
I saw that interview with the professor of rock on you tube. Luke said he was impressed!
We just watched the video with toto re Africa on the rock professor… That’s where seen a small clip of this and decide to come over and check out the whole video! Outstanding
Holly shit. Wasn’t expecting that
Me too. I was about to exit until I hear the vocalist. Exceptional!
ME either. What a gift for all of us 🌻
Best cover ever heard, for me at least 💯💕☮️
❤️
So crystal!
I feel rather sorry for those people walking past the windows outside, unaware they're missing one of the most immortal renditions of any pop song ever.
Yep, just had to stop by to have a listen again. I do it a couple of times a year.
I found it from "you make it wierd " podcast. This vid is wonderful
I think I found it on a Twitter post. I've heard it a few dozen times since. Craziest thing is, I always hated the song until I heard this cover.
I know I'm jealous of all of them, they have no idea what this man's voice has done for me.
Someone linked it in a reddit thread.
Mike was a legal attorney but quit to make music. from what i understand, he has met with and occasionally records with a few members from the band Boston.
I can't stop replaying this video. Amazing.
I'm still listening in 2022, to that perfect rendition of this song from you 2 guys ! Years after years, it blow my heart away, every time ! Thank you so very much ! If you ever travel via Québec, let me know !
No two people have any right to sing that well, live, in the same room. Incredible.
That first chorus, holy shit.
your 3 millions of plays are louder than the 3 aplauses during the recording.. lot of hugs guys.. amazing
Love it!
I have to watch this at least twice a year.
I’ve watched at least four times in less than a month. Never get tired of it. It’s sooooo INTENSE. the passion is emotionally deafening. Arguably the best thing they have done together. Did I say I like it?
Perfectly said, Adam.
I just watched this like 20 times in a row.....
totally, I was so caught up on the song I was actually expecting an apotheotic cheer at the end, and then the 4 guys clapping was my "down to earth" moment
Fuck I wish I could sing like this
Same man, my voice is very unpleasant to listen to, and I know that singing lessons wouldn't help unfortunately. Singing like this is my only dream.
I’m here in November 2024! I remember finding this 14 years ago! I fell in love with Mike!
Holy clean damn good chorus Boss.
+
Uhhmm... why isn't this duo an international star already??
Everything about this is so PERFECT. The voices, the sounds, the harmonies, the guitar, the bass, the amplification. Everything. Personally, my favourite cover EVER. Mike's voice is so beautiful
Thank you!
I'm with you on this
Certainly one of those rare moments where you realize what your witnessing is just so unbelievably great that it becomes the measure that you hold all others too...
@@b9y i8
Don't sleep on the Bass player! Damn that harmony SLAPS.
Holy shit this dude can sing.
Faultless.
They both can. Wow!
Mike's crystal clear voice is just staggering, but how Jeff holds back before the chorus, like at 1:22, just supporting, and then goes all in right after is all the magic! His harmonies are the shit! Best cover ever, as everyone knows.
The 2:44 is even more exciting: ua-cam.com/video/MLrC7e3vSv8/v-deo.html
Yep, big Jeff comin straight at ya like a horn on a freight train.
Yeah, the lead always gets the credit but the ensemble they produce its truly spectacular, ya know? Power to THEM
THE best cover of Africa I've ever heard. I like this even more than the original
That is the best cover of Africa I've ever seen. Amazing vocals and keeping the rhythm while singing some difficult parts. Just...... amazing.
if I walked into a pizza joint and heard this cover, I'd walk out, thinking, no way I can afford the pizza here...
Brilliant, just brilliant!
Htheorphanarian
😂😂😂👍!
lmaooo
Haha! This made me bust out laughing
Funny as hell.
I love how the underwhelming audience response is in complete contrast to the number of UA-cam views.
Because people on UA-cam know the shit. Not the dicks eating the pizza.
People are busy and don’t have much time to stand around on the way to work and the like
My man’s harmonies are on f*cking POINT.
I had the exact same reaction.. 🤣
@@theonlymatthew.l likewise
I second that! Crazy cover for sure and the vocals are excellent!
Amen to that. Sending shivers down my spine.
Did the customers even realize that they were witnessing the greatest cover of Africa, ever?
I hope the miserable people that down voted this are doing alright.
Lmaooo I know right?
This is probably the best cover I've ever heard of any song. I can't quit listening to it!
All these years later, and here I am still listening. Best cover on UA-cam…❤️🎼
"Ok, two dudes in shorts, slumped in the chairs, baseball cu- " *[music starts]*
"Oh, sounds ok, a little simplifie-" *[starts singing]*
"Whoa, dude's got a voice, this is pretty nice, very cle-" *[other guy sings 1 bar]*
"this is actually REALLY nice, I'm gonna liste-" *[chorus starts]*
[My jaw drops, and continues to remain dropped for 3 minutes]
this should be the only comment. it is the only valid thing that any viewer could experience.
This comment
Any rumor that I got chills and my eyes teared up is nothing but lies. . . .
Yep. Had pretty much the same series of events take place the first time I heard this.
Yes 😍
This is not only the best cover of this song I've ever heard, its one of the best covers I've heard period. They kept the heart of the song but made something unique, outstanding.
i totally agree there is about 6 guys or more in toto these 2 are out of this world and your right its absoultly right its the best cover of any song
not even close, the best cover of all time is A day in the life, by the same guys
Totally agree and all without percussion. It’s mind blowing.
Cheers from Boston
Sept. 2023
still the best cover I've ever heard
christopher merritt came back to it after around 1.5 years and it still is the best.
Weird how talented people like him aren't more famous, although he probably is now.
