- Inexplicably the driver decided that opening his door whilst driving was a sensible thing to do, all so he could get to the roundabout 50 yards ahead a few seconds quicker. Clearly was not in that much of hurry after all, as he had time to have a chat about it.

Always in such a rush that they cant find a safe place to pass, but find all the time in the world to stop & argue about it.
Poor decision from the police. Close pass with oncoming traffic, stops on approach to junction to argue with you. 3 very poor decisions, needed to be at least a driving course.
If you did this in your driving test you would not be given a driving licence. But if you do it after you get one they may not even punish you at all. Strange.

It is for exactly this reason that the revised highway code recommends that cyclists take up a position in the centre of the lane where it is safe to do so.
No hand signal from the cyclist prior to moving to the right: also was too early for that junction based on speed of travel!
Essex Police disagree, take it up with them. Perhaps they were more concerned with the driver stopping suddenly and opening their door.
Shows the gulf between the law and the enforcement. The threat of appearing on UA-cam is slowly replacing the police.
IMO you were right & the van driver was wrong - especially after watching through and seeing the junction approach. Hard to know from onboard footage but it also looked like you were unnecessarily wide in lane position before the junction approach - of course that doesn't excuse the driver's behaviour. I often see motorists failing to respect cyclists, and also often see cyclists being unnecessarily obstructive (I'm not accusing you of that - just my observation). I do sometimes cycle, I motorcycle & drive a car. Generally speaking I believe all road users should be more united in demanding a better infrastructure that is safer for everyone. Safe riding & peace to you.

Not really, it goes on their record for a year, then if they do anything else its a course or points

What did the van driver do wrong? I didn't know it was illegal to overtake.
It's not illegal to overtake, but it is when you pass a bike rider too close, as was the case here.
Check the view at 0:50. Supposed to give cyclists at least 1.5m clearance, but is less than 1.5m from the kerb. From experience Surrey Police would agree with me. 👍
