A catalogue of vehicle based crime in Essex, mostly on a short commute to work on my bike.
YN55PZO bus driver close pass of cyclist, Essex Police result; Course or Conditional Offer
Hedingham & Chambers bus driver seems to think the painted cycle lane is adequate protection for someone riding a bike instead of a safe 1.5m. A driver awareness course should help them get this right in future.

A good example of how useless painted cycle lanes like these are, drivers like this will pass almost touching you and think it is fine because of the dotted line.

It is for exactly this reason that the revised highway code recommends that cyclists take up a position in the centre of the lane where it is safe to do so.
If you want to cycle safely stop being entitled and cycle of road. 😉
Cycle of road?
The driver did no wrong the cyclist did. He passed a solid u broken white line when the car was ahead and indicating to turn right. All the cyclist had to do was slow down to allow the car ahead to turn. You can’t just ride into something that is ahead of you without accepting blame. If you drove a car you would understand the concept of defensive driving. Oh and of course anyone with half a brain wouldn’t take in a car on a bike because only one person is going to get hurt in an accident. Self preservation should always come first!
Essex Police disagree entirely. Only the driver received any sanction. You need to reconsider your ill-informed opinions.
Cycle lane should be on the left side of the road. Probably designed by someone who has never ridden a bike.
Can anyone show me written in law a figure of 1.5m .
Looks standard
Cyclist was in his lane and there was a space before the bus. 1.5m is BS. Sometimes it's just not possible. (Yes I cycle and my wife has a trike) Get a grip - this is reality.
There is no law saying 1.5m, its fictional. Nobody has taken it to appeal court yet,
You could enforce your right of way so much until it hurts. Your vulnerability is YOUR issue and no one else's. Does your bike even have brakes ?
A cycle lane so well made, as to be the best in the land & still the driver fails to give way !
As a car driver who is seeing a cyclist doing something he /she shouldnt be doing, eg jumping a red light....how do I report the bike rider to the police in the same way..?
Same way you report someone on foot breaking the law, a description of them.
What is this crap. Where is the right hook.
What sensible cycle lanes, What crap drivers
Drivers are getting worse, don't they realise we don't stand a chance....
at 28s the vehicle was already level with you and started indicating to turn. Your response was to stay in their blind spot and then when they started turning ahead you didn't slow down. Clearly the vehicle should have held back and not overtaken you but YOU MADE THE PROBLEM WORSE by your actions. This is giving cyclists a bad name and putting yourself in un-neccessary danger. Do you feel you are ENTITLED to behave like this?
I disagree as do Essex Police, take it up with them. The driver was at fault, only I took action to avoid a collision. You're giving drivers a bad name and sound entitled.
This argument wouldn't fly if we were talking about two cars hence it really shouldn't fly when we're talking about a car and a bike. They cut across him plain and simple.
@@makecyclingsafeagain6575 I suggest you read my comment more carefully. I wasn't saying you were to blame for the car turning ahead of you but I did suggest you made problem worse. I drive around 800 miles a week and I regularly cycle on the roads. I have to give way to idiots like this on a regular basis in order to reduce the risk of a collision
@@insightphoto I did not make the problem worse, I came to a controlled stop to avoid a collision. The driver did absolutely nothing themselves. I drive and cycle without causing other road users such danger.
You did make it worse: you could see a potential problem developing, but you stayed in the blind spot and did nothing to correct that or adjust your speed. Roads are shared and people make mistakes. Try to be more tolerant and less judgemental. @@makecyclingsafeagain6575
Bus drivers on this road seem to be either fantastic or terrible. Thanks for reporting.
Couldn't agree more!
Terrible- did you report it to the police?
Yes, the driver received a course or conditional offer. This is a driver awareness course at their own cost or points/fine.
@@makecyclingsafeagain6575 good - I think a driver awareness course is a good outcome
@@makecyclingsafeagain6575awwww, you poor poor girl, big ol meany weenie driver cut you off, THE HORROR!!! You Karens and your sensitive vaginas, you’re weak, and a rat. Pu#%y cyclists.
Nice to see the new utterly awful cycle lane being used. On my short blast up there 3 people just walked out in front of me.
Works well for me - I hated having to mix with cars, vans, buses and HGVs. Being bidirectional is good.
Another reason bike lanes don't make cycling safer. Motorists can't grasp that safe clearance applies whether cyclist is in a bike lane or in the travel lane.
Painted bike lanes don't make cycling safer but properly segregated ones certainly do. I wish they'd remove this particular painted bike lane (and ideally replace it with a segregated one -- it would be a complete game changer for our family).
Motorists don't grasp it because the govt refuses to educate them on it. Maybe the consider the fines to be more profitable.
@@vfclists Do they actually fine for close passes of cyclists? I thought at best a driving course.
@@paulflory3532 If they insist they are innocent and take the matter to court they get fined, and may even lose points on their licence.
Why should he let the bus pass? As some people have stated. He has priority. In the hierarchy, busses are last.
If the police do this, then everyone can. if the police do it they will never prosecute anyone else who does.
Everyone makes mistakes. No harm done.
#makeWALKINGsafeAgain! bicycle-riders are the worst -they just dont care about pedastrians and risk pedastrians lifes every day!!!
Cyclists with 10-30 kg bicycles who will be injured as well if they hit pedestrians risk pedestrian's lifes every day? Yes, there are reckless cyclists which I as a cyclist with 12k+ km per year despise as well, but reckless drivers with 1+ tons of metal box around them are far more dangerous. How many pedestrians are killed by cyclists every year and how many pedestrians are killed by car drivers every year? If you can provide any proof that cyclists are "the worst"/more dangerous than car drivers I'll gladly change my mind.
the driver wasnt close and dont drive so far away from the kerb you trouble making clown!!
Is it normal in the uk for bikes to not use the sidewalk when its available?
It's illegal to ride on the pavement (sidewalk) here
Is your name Krusty?
Certainly closer than I would have made the pass.
Wasn't that close. Typical arrogant roadie.
Absolutely not - The cyclist's body is about 30 cm further out from the camera's point of view and you have to factor in the side mirror of the car which sticks out more than 10 cm from the car's body as well. The driver drove with the rightside tires on the centre line when he was overtaking. That means he passed the cyclist with approximately 10 cm between the side mirror and the cyclist's body. If there was just a slight gust of wind or anything else why the cyclist would have to veer 10 cm to the right the driver would have hit the cyclist. Contrary to some beliefs giving at least 1.5m of space when overtaking isn't there to annoy drivers, it's to keep cyclists safe from 1.5+ tons of metal box.
I hope you don't drive.
@@StevieOnHisBike I hope you don't cycle
you could have ridden closer to the kerb, like you are supposed to
Even if he had ridden in the gutter there's not enough space to safely overtake a cyclist when there's oncoming traffic. Contrary to some beliefs giving at least 1.5m of space when overtaking isn't there to annoy drivers, it's to keep cyclists safe from 1.5+ tons of metal box.
How close to the curb would you suggest? In the UK, the recommended MINIMUM is 50cm (just over 18" to those still in the dark ages). The cyclist wasn't much further out than this. Also, as a cyclist, they are just as entitled to take primary position as a motorised vehicle if they feel the situation warrants it. So... to sat "supposed to" make you look like a bit of an idiot.
Arrogant roadie
If you knew the merc was going to overtake (no idea if you looked behind to see) would you consider changing your position to go into the gap between the cars on your left to get more space and reduce the risks?
They shouldn't have needed to. The other two drivers were able to make a decision and overtake with adequate room. The Merc should have identified the fact the road was closing in width and not followed.
@@K3end0 yes they shouldnt, the merc is fully to blame, but we know lots of drivers make mistakes and bad judgements, your safety is in your hands. I am not saying the cyclist had to, but if they observed and though a close pass was about to happen should they and could they have nipped into the gap to reduce the risk from the bad driver?
It wouldn’t reduce the risk
@@bestbehave why is that?
@@douglasreid699 it further encourages close passes and by the time you get to the end of the gap you can’t get back onto the road as other vehicles have been encouraged to pass and won’t be giving you space - you wouldn’t do it if you were driving, don’t expect other road users to do it It is incumbent on the overtaking vehicle to do so safely and they are required to give at least 1.5m. HWC 163 tells you exactly how to do it, and even includes a picture for those who struggle It’s so easy to drive safely around people in bikes. I can do it, why can’t you?
You really are an antagonist
🤔 Antagonising by just choosing a form of transport which you don't like? Whoa, you're easily triggered, you should get some professional help for that...

Why do just a very small proportion of drivers do this? It’s a mystery to me.
Cyclist can 'shop' car drivers to the police......but not the other way round.....perhaps it would be fairer if it worked both ways....?
I know that road. Goof result!
The highway code was written over 100 years ago, at the time when the footpaths were full of walkers it made sense for cycles to ride with horses and carts. Now the footpaths are empty but cyclists must still obey an obsolete law and block emergency vehicles.
How about having to take your driving test again , this time having to concentrate , on all the contents of the highway code ?
If you cycled next to the kerb it wouldn’t happen would it? What’s the big deal you didn’t get hurt didn’t fall off nothing happened and yet off you go to grass someone up and take food off their table you are utter s c u m
Cycling too close to the kerb you get drain covers which are sunken, lots of cans and plastic bottles which are hazardous, broken glass. You also need to come out into the road a lot more to pass stationary vehicles and if you drive too close to the kerb a lot more vehicles will try squeezing past when it isn't safe. So cycling away from the kerb is safer, yes less convenient for traffic wanting to pass but it's all part of driving on the roads, traffic jams, roadworks, cyclists, road calming measures. That is the one point I am addressing, not your second one btw.
there’s only two ways to go on this road he was in a big suv he can only impede the center line so far i think you should be more understanding
If you’re saying the suv pass was ok you are the sort of driver that doesn’t understand uk law, doesn’t appreciate the dangers cyclists face every time they go out and probably shouldn’t be driving.
Sometimes they don’t even know what they have just done. I had one lady I confronted for being too close admit on camera that: “I didn’t even know you were there.” Tbf I believed her and asked her to attend an awareness course in my report.
I know colchester well and when I think about pulling into lane 2 on a pedal bike I just think how utterly exposed and utterly vulnerable you are. That car driver was simply cretinous.
All cyclists should be compelled to take and pay for a DVLA test. It's a shame Essex Poice do not take action against bad cyclists for example when they cycle along the nearside of vehicles not keeping the 1.5 m distance. Not all cyclists are bad just most of them.
Not relevant to this video, how would any of that prevented this driver doing what they did? All drivers should be rested each year.
@@makecyclingsafeagain6575 Which just confirms your blinkered attitude "Drivers all bad, Cyclists all good" Makes you a bit sad really!
I'm mostly a driver, this shows your blinkered bigotry.
@@makecyclingsafeagain6575 Hardly. I am of the opinion that there are good and bad in ALL types of road users. My point is that you only accept that cyclist = good. Plus try leaving the Police out of this and let them get back to the important issues of attending burglaries and solving more than 2%
Well take your request for testing of cyclists to your local MP, see how you get on. There was a recent consultation on the issue, have a read of it.
just remember you lot dont need a license, mot, tax, insurance or even legal bike tyres to use these. Youre not the king of the road, and never will be
Just remember drivers and cyclists alike record dangerous behaviour and will report you. You are not above the law. Drive safe.
I have been a cyclist all my life, do you regard your manner of ridging as safe ? I would disagree, you are purposely putting yourself at risk. I wish you no malice so please take good advice, especially as the local NHS are an ambulance driver short, you are taking unnecessary risks with your life, this is not going to end well
I am cycling perfectly safely. Best you do your bikability training to update your knowledge. Hugging the kerb is dangerous and specifically advised against. I am 2 to 3 feet away from the kerb, a good secondary position. The driver drive dangerously and was quite rightly offered a driver improvement course.
The police made the assessment of poor driving not the cyclist. As a witness, the cyclist provide the evidence of poor driving. As an alternative to prosecution the driver was offered a course or a conditional offer. All drivers and road users in general must use the road safely.
your way further out in a busy road than id be, you could have moved over a bit
I'm 2 or 3 feet from the kerb, a good secondary position. Essex Police were quite happy with my riding.

~@This 1.5m rules is not actually Law, its something made up out of fresh air. It needs challenging in court.
OK then. I've been to court before for someone who felt this way. It didn't end well for them.
@@makecyclingsafeagain6575As said it needs challenging, Magistrates dont have to follow the law and often dont, but appeal court judges do. As this 1.5m thing is not law, I would like to see how they decide when thats been used as evidence to prosecute people. Its a made up law that doesn't exists.
OK well you can do this. Go pass a camera cyclist too close, get the letter from the police and ho through the court system to find out. Or you could just pass cyclists safely.
Ambulance services are already struggling to recruit staff and you try to lose a driver his job. Why get the police involved? Why not go to the ambulance station and show the video to a senior paramedic so he can have a word with the driver instead. You are just a nasty sh!t stirrer, aren't you? Get a life.
Childish response. A driver improvement course is perfect for this driver. Drive safe.
