    The song is literal--the lyrics tell you what he won't do:
    1. forget the way you feel right now,
    2. forgive myself if we don't go all the way, Tonight,
    3. do it better then I do it with you,
    4. stop dreaming of you every night of my life,

      I think I remember Brad & Lex review Paradise By the Dashboard Lights before. "Bat" or "Two out of Three" would be good for a review... I think what really made the songs on "Bat Out of Hell" sound so great was Todd Rundgren's production. He laid out the arrangements and threw out other parts laying them in the perfect spots on the tracks, and his improv's on the guitar really put an edge in Bat.

The first things he mentions that he won't do is lie to her ("I'll never lie to you and that's a fact") and forget the way she feels right now. In the line, "I will do anything for love, but I won't do that," the "that" is whatever he said just before that. For example: "But I'll never forget the way you feel right now, Oh no - no way - I would do anything for love, But I won't do that" - The "that" in this particular verse is "forget the way you feel right now." This song, "Total Eclipse Of The Heart", "It's All Coming Back To Me Now", "Holding Out For A Hero" and "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" all have one genius in common: Jim Steinman. The now late Jim Steinman. His passion, his words, his music, his production... his haunting. Rest in peace, Jim.

    • @BlackieNuff
      @BlackieNuff 2 роки тому

      Indeed. Jim's solo album in 1981 was pretty cool ; to me it's like the "soulmate" second half to Meat Loaf's 1981 album Dead Ringer. Could be cos during that period, Meat had some kind of accident and was on the mend so it delayed them working on the follow-up to Bat. I guess Jim got antsy and couldn't wait, so he did a few songs under his own name ; some of which later appeared on future Meat Loaf albums. I guess that's another reason I consider Jim's album (Bad For Good) to be an extension of the Meat Loaf catalog.

    • @magicmike7198
      @magicmike7198 2 роки тому

      @@BlackieNuff In that tumultuous period, Meat Loaf lost his voice. You can hear it on the album "Dead Ringer". It's more nasal. A dark moment in his career, forcing Jim to do the vocal duties himself on the album "Bad For Good". His vocal range couldn't do justice to his own song "Surf's Up". So he got Rory Dodd to sing the high notes instead of him. You might already know this but if you don't, go read about Jim's experience on producing Deff Leppard's Hysteria album. A real sitcom.

      Awww, I knew I had something wrong. Was Meat out of commission due to his voice? Sounds familiar - why did I think it was cos of a car accident? Unless that was another time? Or another artist? Maybe I just read a crap article? LOL. Yeah, I probably should go back and do some reading cos I obviously forgot gobs of it and have other parts confused. It's been a few years since I first read about it.
      The Rory Todd thing is new to me, though. Thanks for that, lol. I also had no idea Jim had anything to do with Def Leppard (or their album). Sounds interesting.

      @magicmike7198 2 роки тому

      @@BlackieNuff Sorry, i wasn't trying to put you on the spot :) I'm just glad somebody recognizes Jim's contribution. Songwriters are often forgotten. And Jim Steinman was soooo much more than simply a songwriter. When you listen to a Jim Steinman song, as you surely already know, you are entering his amazing, dark and magical universe filled with teenage angts and fiery lust for passion! he did it all on a song. If you ever go back and read some more on the crazy friendship between Jim and Meat, you'll just have a great time! A real sitcom. They should do a movie on them! I'm certainly not claiming to be an expert and me too, my friend, i might be off on some details :) As for Def leppard, he finally gave up on the production of Hysteria. The reasons will make you see the band in a different light. Def Leppard, back then, was really a Mutt Lange creation in a way.

    2 things - thats edited, the album version is 11+ mins long. The female singer isnt the lady in the video, although various record companies offered the model a recording contract based on the vocals. The female vocal was done by a female UK singer who happened to be around in the building when the song was being recorded, and did the vocal as a favour. She was never credited. As an asuide, she appeared a couple of years ago on the UK version of the voice, but no one turned. They all though she was great, but didn't know what they could do for her. "But I won't do that" - Listen to what he sings before that line. He sings what he will do, then one line what he won't do, then comes the "I'll do anything for love, but I won't do that". The "that" refers to what he just said 5 seconds earlier.
    But I'll never forget the way you feel right now,
    Oh no, no way.
    And I would do anything for love,
    But I won't do that
    No I won't do that
    Anything for love
    Oh I would do anything for love,
    I would do anything for love
    But I won't do that
    No I won't do that
    In this instance he won't "forget the way you feel right now,"
    That I would do anything for love
    I'll be there till the final act
    And I would do anything for love!
    And I'll take the vow and seal a pact
    But I'll never forgive myself if we don't go all the way
    Tonight
    And I would do anything for love
    Oh I would do anything for love
    Oh I would do anything for love
    But I won't do that
    No I wont do that
    Here he won't " forgive myself if we don't go all the way"

  • @TheSpydyr
    @TheSpydyr 2 роки тому +1

    It's easier to explain in an example that Meat Loaf gave in an interview. Here it is,
    "In a new interview, Meat Loaf finally explains what the "that" is in his most famous song. "It's the line before every chorus," the singer tells Yahoo! Screen. "There's nine of them, I think. 'I'll never stop dreaming of you every night of my life / I'll do anything for love / But I won't do that.'""
    So in that example, he's saying he won't do that or he won't stop dreaming of her every night of his life.

    Hey you guys, I just wanted to add something which is largely unknown, the lady singing with him towards the end is not the supermodel in the video (not sure of her name), but the singers name is Lorraine Crosby. She's from Northern England, and she was at the studio when this was being recorded. She was there that day to record something in her own right, but as Meatloaf's singer failed to turn up, she was asked if she'd take up the offer and thank God, she accepted, because she was quite amazing. Warmest greetings to you both from here in the UK. 🙋‍♂ 🙋‍♂

      The beautiful woman we see in the video is a model Dana Patrick 28 years old at the time who received several offers for record deals even though she was just lip syncing. She was afraid of heights and was quite nervous when the couch rose in the air. She had nothing but good things to say about Meatloaf and what a gentleman he was. They stayed in touch for a few years after the video and eventually drifted apart. She is happily married (no children) and living on the west coast.

    Lorraine Crosby (born 27 November 1960) is an English singer and songwriter. She was the female vocalist on Meat Loaf's 1993 hit single "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)". Her debut album, Mrs Loud was released in 2008.
    Crosby was born in Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne. Her father died in a road accident when his car collided with a bus when she was two years old, leaving her mother to raise Lorraine, her two sisters, and one brother. She attended Walker Comprehensive school. She sang in school and church choirs and played the violin in the orchestra but did not start singing professionally until she was 20.
    Crosby appeared in the first round of BBC's second series of The Voice on 6 April 2013.[11] She failed to progress when she was rejected by all four coaches.

    the lady is the video is a model/actress miming along to a lady vocalist called Lorraine Crosby who is a little known singer who is from my home town of Newcastle, England. Lorraine just happened to be in the right place at the right time when she got the job to be the female voice on this epic track.
    Whilst recording in LA, trying to make the big time she was asked to do a cover vocal of this song as a guide for a more well known artist (rumoured to be Cher, Bonnie Tyler or Patti Russo) however for what ever reason they decided to stay with Lorraine voice. She when back to England and when the song became a smash world wide hit she received no credits, royalties or shared in any of they awards the song won.
    Lorraine continues to tour small venues here in the UK with her husband and band.

    Actually, the whole: "I won't do that" is throughout the song. Every time he said "But I won't do..." then hit the chorus, THAT is what he wouldn't do. Example.
    "But I'll never forget the way you feel right now
    Oh no, no way
    And I would do anything for love
    But I won't do that, oh

    Meat Loaf is credited for fusing theatrical opera w/ rock music. His 1977 album 'Bat out of hell' has sold over 15 million copies in the US. This album 'Bat out of hell Pt. II: Back into hell' in 1993 was a major comeback for the singer after becoming irrelevant in the 80's.

He'll do anything for loe but he won't do that (forget how she feels right now)". And so it goes the rest of the song. He'll say all the things he'd do for love and then one thing he would not.

    But I’ll never stop dreaming of you every night of my life, no way
    And I would do anything for love
    Oh I would do anything for love
    Oh I would do anything for love
    But I won’t do that, no I won’t do that
    “I’D DO ANYTHING FOR LOVE (BUT I WON’T DO THAT]
    The thing he won’t do, Meat Loaf said, is spelled out in the line before the chorus kicks in. In the lyrics above, for example, he’s saying he would do anything for love, but he won’t ever “stop dreaming of you every night of [his] life.”
    “It’s the line before every chorus,” Meat Loaf explained to the “Storytellers” audience, albeit with the help of a blackboard.
    In fact, four such promises are made during the course of the song, each time before a chorus kicks in. In addition to saying he’ll “never stop dreaming of you,” the singer also says he’ll “never forget the way you feel right now,” “never forgive myself if we don’t go all the way,” and “never do it better than I do it with you.”
    And those, according to Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman, are the things he won’t do.

    I know this came out on his "Bat out of Hell" album(s) back in 77 (?) but it was remastered for the Bram Stoker's Dracula movie in the early 90's (I think) with Keanu Reeves and Gary Oldman. So the video takes place in a very Beauty and the Beast style mansion, though that bed and the two sapphic vamp girls is straight out of the Dracula movie. I believe the cops are hunting him because he is suspected of being responsible for the woman's disappearance, (the continuity of the story jumps around) not realizing that she went to him. Ultimately, her love brings him back from this base creature form. Originally, this song was the opening track for part 2 of his Bat out of Hell album(s) and the last song on part 1 is Paradise by the Dashboard Light which is a song about two kids making out in a car, he tries to get her to give in and he makes a bunch of promises like "No, I wont do that", I will love you till the end of time" etc. So this song is a continuation of that story. However, the woman in the video (Dana Patrick) is only an actress and she was lip-synching to the original vocals from Lorraine "Mrs. Loud" Crosby, who replaced Ellen Foley's original duet with Meatloaf. Meatloaf is a solo artist, he has no definitive band, just people he likes to perform with. You may recognize him in his iconic role as Eddie from the Rocky Horror Picture Show or Robert "Bob" Paulson from Fight Club.

    The female singer is not the women in the video. She sadly wasn't named on the song. The singer was a placeholder for a different singer but they didn't get anyone so they used her. Her name is Lorraine Crosby. She received no royalties for the song and didn't tour with Meatloaf for the song (such a sad way to treat her). On the album they didn't even name her. She is only known as "Mrs. Loud" in the credits. A sad story in my eyes as she made the song and it could have launched her in her career and she should have got the royalties.
    I saw her preform the song live in Sheffield a few months ago. She is still as amazing.
