I got my driver's license in December of '72. I had this song on an 8 track tape. I used to drive down the road in Lakeland, Florida (USA), with my windows down, this song blaring out of the speakers at full volume and me singing along. Good times in my 1968 Ford Falcon. Chuck Berry (aka the Father of Rock and Roll) first "hit the charts" in the second half of 1955. One of the songs he wrote, and is most famous for, is "Johnny B. Goode." It was semi-autobiographical. Chuck Berry also happened to grow up on Goode Street, in St. Louis. He was actively performing until his death in 2017, at age 90.

I'm not sure if I'm the first person here to point this out, but this is a cover. "My Ding-a-Ling" was originally written and recorded by Dave Bartholomew in 1952. A lot of R&B music from the 1950s is filled with raunchy double entendres.

"The father of Rock and Roll" Chuck Berry had all kinds of hit songs. He was one of the first to add blues to Rock music. He had hits like Johnny B Goode, Maybellene, Roll Over Beethoven, Go Johnny Go, No Particular Place to Go, etc. These are well before your time, but if curious, there was a documentary on him called Chuck Berry: Hail! This was number in like November of 1972 for I think two weeks. The live version that was number one was slightly different than this version. The hit flowed a little more. Chuck Berry had several hits in the 1950s. Johnny B. Goode was probably his biggest hit. School Days, Maybelline, and No Particular Place to Go were big hits for him too. He did a Christmas song called Run Rudolph Run. He was a great entertainer and is greatly missed. Thank you for sharing.
He was a massive Influence on the Beatles, Keith Richards and several other Rock Greats. This song example was no testament to his prowess on the guitar though. He could solo and “Duck walk” across the stage. I guess in the early 70s the implications of these lyrics were enough to make so many buy that record. I think of “Roll over Beethoven” or “Johnny Be good” when I think of his significant contributions. You’re a good sport for hanging in there Diane!👍
I was 12 when this came out & living in Spain. Dad was in US Air Force. Us kids learned the words real quick & walked around singing it all the time. I almost got my mouth washed out with soap when I walked into the house, singing it, from my mom until she listened to the words. She laughed & said , "I still don't want to hear you singing it." So that ended singing it at home. There were also some stations that refused to play it back then. Chuck had a number of hits, though this was his #1.

Elvis also never thought of it as a career, he was driving a truck and was only making a recording for his mom’s birthday.
@@andrewft31Could it be in the rush of Sam Phillips trying to find quote a White Man with the Black Man's sound, would have left chuck on the side as a known entity to other musicians. Chuck would break nationally later. Most of these musicians where known to play in live gigs, which Elvis and others where known to attend.
Chuck was a great entertainer, he was known for his showmanship as well as being the father of Rock and Roll
I love the way she thinks one off the founders of rock and roll only has one hit song lol.
She likely misheard the fact that it's his only number one hit single, none of his others hit number one.
What a great entertainer, & Chuck Berry did a phenomenal job too. Chuck’s stage presence, & connection with the audience came through. I’d really love to see more of him.
Me too. Some Johnny B. Goode for the KMan would work!
"I do believe that was his only hit song!" Thank you Diane for doing your thing. Now I'm gonna play with my ding-a-ling!

I remember when this song came out.
I remember this song very well! Being a kid in the 70s this song would make us giggle and laugh out loud! Great fun video! Thank you for covering it!
I also have to say THANK YOU for making this crazy world a much HAPPIER place..
I hope everyone that is having a bad day see's this and has a much better day.
Chuck has influenced so many musicians you might as well quit counting. This one was later in his career. He was always a top rate entertainer. Nice reaction.
I remember when this came out... 😊❤
I was a junior in high school.
A brilliant performer. Wonderful.
It is hard to name another hit song, that almost without exception brings a smile to everyones face.
I've never heard him talk this much. Such an enlightening explanation 😂
Isn’t it though!? 🤣 it’s good to have a little levity sometimes. Love me a bit of silly.
I'm not sure if I'm the first person here to point this out, but this is a cover. "My Ding-a-Ling" was originally written and recorded by Dave Bartholomew in 1952. A lot of R&B music from the 1950s is filled with raunchy double entendres.
The world had a sense of humor back then. A silly song for a couple weeks was fun.
I'm now 80 but if memory serves me right this was played on TV live and reached the number one spot in the charts.
Love Chuck Berry, he had many hit songs in the Seventies
Most of his hits were in the '50's.
Chuck Berry was simply a great entertainer. Hard to stay grumpy watching him. Glad Diane chose this one for today.
Chuck Berry is a legend. His songs are fun to play on guitar and piano.
I gotta try that sometime!
One of the ladies caught on film in this concert could very well be the grandmother of someone you met when you lived in London. Yes, that sweet older lady now best known for her biscuits is forever immortalized singing with a rock legend about a ding-a-ling.
I bet you never thought you'd be saying those words for 100s of thousands of people to sing along with you.
Thanks Diane, enjoy your weekend. I look forward to seeing what surprises you have for us over on Patreon.
Oh wow! You’re right 🫣 haha tty soon Chip 🍟 (hey! Your emoji is back)
Chuck Berry was rock n roll royalty!
Thanks. I haven’t heard this since 1973 but I’m still playing with my….
I was an eighth grader when this song was released. Just in time for puberty! Those were turbulent times in America. Amidst the chaos and upheaval. This provided a bit of levity during those troubled decades. Thanks for bringing back a moment of joy and unity. Glad you enjoyed it too!
I’ve never heard Chuck sing this song. Now I know where my first pastor got this term that he used often-“ding-a-ling.”
He may have got it from anywhere - as it was a pretty common term back in the day. Also - Chuck Berry did not write this song. It was first written and recorded by Dave Bartholomew twenty years before in 1952.
Hail! Rock 'n' Roll with an all-star cast.
Wow this brought me right back to the Legendary king of rock and roll! My neighbor and I used to sing this song all the time and everyone would laugh their heads off!
Chuck was the OG rock and roller...the godfather...THE made man. never have seen this version before...HILARIOUS!!!! Thank you!
OMG! 1972, chain smoking bus driver who had her radio wired into stereo speakers on the school bus. This song playing, and the Bus rocking back and forth as we (the kids) had the bus rockin and rollin all the way home!
It's amazing how our brains work, why it has retained the entire lyrics to this song since I was a kid, is beyond me!!! 😃
@@ianhamilton2035 Every. Single. Word. For decades! 😂
I got the chance to see him in concert in his later years. I believe in the late 80's. When he played this song, the whole place went wild!
Even though the picture is very blurred behind him at the 5:25 mark over his right shoulder is a guest in a box behind and above him, That is the Queen of England.
Also My First Time Hearing Chuck Berry - My Ding A Ling. I was thinking that what the song was about since that's what they called it in 50's and 60's. Chucky Berry made it more comical giving women a chorus in the song too. Entertaining watching You Sing with the Song, Laughing and Smiling. Song sounds like a song that can be sung at a comedy club the crowd was really enjoying it. I have heard some of Chuck Berry's Popular songs. Thanks for Bringing Happiness, Glee, and Cheer to start the Weekend off Smiles all Year. I like the rhyme you did on the shoutouts. Sending Good Vibes and A Gift to You and Chewie to have a Extra Joyful Weekend. Happy Friday
Thank you! Yes, it was good fun
@@DianeJennings Your Welcome! Always Here for You and Chewie. Laughter, Smiling, Singing Music and Food the Weekend is Here 🥂🎉
If you ever watched Back to the Future, during the dance scene the band member who hurt his hand was on the phone so his cousin could hear what Marty was playing. The cousin was “Chuck” and the band member was “Marvin”, a reference to Chuck Berry
Chuck Berry is the Grandfather of Rock & Roll. And is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
She'll have seen Michael J Fox do that duck walk in Back to the Future
@ I’ll bet you’re right!
@@komcaloon5609gotta go back and rewatch
@@LindaC616 I'm sure she's also seen John Travolta and Uma Thurman dance to Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell" in Pulp Fiction.
@allenporter6586 there you go.
His only number 1 hit. He had a huge catalog of hits.
Keaghan loves Chuck Berry, his favourite is Johnny B Goode. I thought that’d surely be his #1 song, they even named a movie after it.
Sometimes the biggest hits don’t make number 1️⃣
I had this on 45 RPM record, as a kid in 1972
Usually when Diane presents a music reaction video my attention is pretty much divided between her and the video she is reacting to, but this time all my focus was on her cheerful face. I guess I just wanted to see how many shades of red she could blush! As many here are saying, Chuck was an early pioneer of the Rock n Roll genre. Many classic oldies are from Chuck. One that I really cottoned up to was "You Never Can Tell", also known as "C'est La Vie". Fun reaction video Diane - Thanks we needed that! 😜
Great to hear Ron! Glad you enjoyed it
The song from the Pulp Fiction dance scene!
Diane, I've been following and enjoying this channel for years now. I can honestly say this was the best reaction I've ever seen from you. Loved it. 😂
Chuck Berry and Little Richard are the foundation of Rock and Roll. Sister Rosetta Tharpe is where a lot of early rock guitarists got the foundation of their style.
This was Chuck Berry's only single to reach #1 on the U.S. charts
And the UK sadly.
0:15 😅I can’t be the only person who recommended this
Aren't you Aussie? Did it travel that far?!😅😅
Definitely not! 😂
@@LindaC616 originally from the US I’ve been living in Australia for the past 16 years
@@mattheweudy2396 ah, makes sense!
This performance was nearly 20 years into his music career, with so many hits it's hard to count. He's a legend of rock 'n roll...you should watch him on Belgium TV in 1965...still years into his career, but imo an iconic performance :). Johnny B. Goode is definitely the most well known, with Maybelline, Run Rudolph Run, Roll Over Beethoven, and No Particular Place To Go being right up there too.
Was that his only hit!? Chuck berry was one of the fathers of rock n roll!
Chuck Berry is a legend.
They featured his song in Back to the Future.
"Johnny Be Good" one of the first rock songs ever.
Chuck Berry had many songs, Most famous is probably Johnny B Good , then there's Roll Over Beethoven , Sweet Little Sixteen, Rock and Roll Music, Maybelline, Run Run Rudolph, No Particular Place to Go and the list goes on, great reaction
I had the pleasure meeting Chuck Berry when i stopped for breakfast in Alton Illinois at te river boat casino my truck broke down after picking up a grain load next door he was at the next booth in the buffet dining room we left i told him he was one of my favorite singers and shook his hand he said thank you
Hadn't listened to this song in a long time. 😁👍
Chuck had many rock and roll hits including “Johnny Be Good” which they used in “Back to the Future” when Marty was rocking on stage at the dance.
Now I have that song stuck in my head
It isn't that it was his only hit. It was his only number one hit, but how ironic with all the other great rock & roll music for which he was, & indeed still is, so well known. RIP
Absolutely not his only song, Chuck Berry was a Rock’n’ Roll pioneer, had so many hits, maybe not in the Uk. This is the man who wrote’JOHNNY B.Goode” that was in Back to the Future. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones coved many of his hit.
This was his only number one hit
Straight up master of the double entendre - in the song yes, but even better in the "crowd work"!
11:51 WHAT? Man is the idol of 90% of the guys you consider a lengend in Rock 'n Roll. He created the Rock Star style. Beatles and Stones were inspired by him, as well as almost every other great guitarrist that came after. His greatest hits are ALL Rock 'n Roll classics.
I’m so glad I stumbled on your channel because you are so sweet and uplifting. This was such a cute sweet video ❤
11:41 by no means was this his only hit, I’d like to see how he does his other songs live
After all this time I never heard this version before. Fun.
I don't think I have seen this version. A little more entertaining than just the recording. And you certainly seemed to have fun with it.
Agreed, I enjoyed this video more than the recording too
Aww that’s great to hear guys! 🥰 makes me happy!
I've never heard it b sung this way BUT I'm definitely a Chuck Berry fan.
He did a lot of music and it was common music to our party environments as teen agers...... That's a long time ago, I'm 75 now and was raised in Northern Rhodesia - now Zambia.
this is a classic, but CHUCK BERRY is the OG rock n roller. I would say ROCK and ROLL started for the most part with CHUCK BERRY👍🍀
WOW, what a memory shot ... lol. Remember this well my friend. Loved your reaction Diane ... :)
Chuck Berry was a guitar legend, there is an epic video of him singing with John Lennon and suddenly Yoko Ono starts screaming gibberish. About the 3rd time she does it you can see Chuck is not amused
Someone also turned her mike Off! Thank the powers that be😊
💖🐺
😆😆😆 true story i was supposed to be her bodyguard one night several years ago at a big event. She never bothered showing so I collected her pass and program and just kept it. I knew I wouldn't work with her again as I was retiring
Your stunned face was hilarious.
This song got me in a lot of trouble in Catholic school when it came out. Singing it in the hallways in front of the fathers and sisters
😂
Thank you for this video. Yes the double meaning made it a lot of fun singing on the school playgrounds and as a fourth grader we felt proud we had our own Chuck Berry song🤣🤣🤣🤣
Chuck Berry was a wise man ahead of his time. Every woman he slept with he took a picture with, standing without clothes, smiling. That way no one could falsely accuse him of wrong doing.
Didn't stop him for doing prison time for screwing a 14 year hooker from Mexico.
You had too much fun!Lmao. It was hilarious!
On this channel, Diane does stuff and things
Today, she reacts and she also “sings”
It’s a silly little song called My Ding-A-Ling
And she has no idea he’s the Rock ‘n’ Roll king
Haha factual and funny!
This is a really cute video. I’ve heard this song a few times in my life, but I’ve never seen it this way and I loved it so much.
Same. I have not heard this song in decades and I have never seen this video
Aww that’s great! It was good fun
