Phil Collins really is a musical genius, even when he lost his hearing for a while, he kept his solo career going and helped other musicians that were just getting started.
He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son is on the Domino tour with Genesis currently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

I love when the younger generation finds some of my generation’s fabulous treasures. Phil Collins is a classic timeless artist one of my favourite songs of all times
Truly incredible that he can sing so even and smooth while drumming just incredible. Phil is a truly amazing artist, the breadth of his work is vast from Genesis to Disney.
Youre right this song has been in a lot of movies. One movie that comes to mind is if youve seen "the hangover" It played when they ran into mike Tyson and the drum solo was his fav part.
When Lex said "Usually people dance" I thought "Well the only thing about him is the way that he walks". Brad & Lex won't get the reference, but maybe in time they will. Edit: Also if you are trying to categorise Phil it's "Dad Vibes". Middle aged, balding, dad bod. Not what you would expect from a frontman. He isn't cool and he isn't trying to be, and when he took over the singing duties with Genesis the band was seriously uncool for a while. Still wildly popular and sold buckets of albums, but no one would admit it.
My high school basketball team ran out to this song and we emerged from the darkness right when the drums kicked in, every home game! Truly the highlight of my basketball career. We sucked.
One of the most iconc songs ever. That song still gives me chill bumps. The song came along in the 80's with show Miami vice. At least I have always related that song to the movie.
There used to be a UA-cam series of videos where fans overdub favorite music over the famous black Ferrari Daytona night chase montage footage (the scene where you're looking at fast driving from the viewpoint of just behind the front tire). My favorite track from the series is Laurent Garnier's "Acid Eiffel". UA-cam took all the videos down, tho 😔
This song cemented itself in the minds of people when it appeared regularly as background music in the iconic tv show of the 1980s called Miami Vice that aired in those days Friday nights at 10 pm. In fact music club profits went down because people would stay home to see that show all over The United States. The song Mama also sung by Phil when he was with the group Genesis also has strong vicious drums which Phil played himself. Check it all everybody.
These two are the most likable reaction couple I've watched. Play off each other well and don't get overdramatic. Nice work. Oh yeah, Phil Collins is a legend, listen to some old Genesis stuff, both when he was just the drummer and when he was the front man after Gabriel left. Unique and very good.
When Genesis lead singer (Peter Gabriel) left the band high and dry the drummer, Phil Collins took the roll and the band ran up the charts. Awesome 80's iconic song.
He wrote this song about a deeply painful divorce he'd been through. You can see the agony and anger in his eyes, on his face, and hear it in his voice.
He was a drummer 1st,/ backup singer As for not drumming, Collins said, "I'd love to but you know, I mean, I can barely hold a stick with this hand. So there are certain physical things that get in the way." He had back surgery that left him with the inability to drum anymore and uses a cane to assist him in walking. His son will be playing the drums in the Genesis reunion tour this year. Watch some Genesis videos to see him play more drums
yeah, he son played drum when Phill went on a solo tour a few years ago. sad that he have to sit down and sing. the young man is very lucky to be on tour with his father. he gotta be really lucky to do a nother tour with his dad in genesis.
The song is a masterpiece. It is very real and most don't know what it means. There is a reason for his passion and the detail and art. There is an emotional vibe and with good reason, if you know what the song means, you will truly get it. I encourage you to look it up.
Hey guys if you want to hear some more Phil Collins check out the song Mama by Genesis. He became the lead singer of the band after Peter Gabriel (who you guys should also check out at some point) left. Love the videos guys, keep it up.
The Drum riff is really famous in the UK, it was used in a cadbury`s advert and in many other things, and is what everyone is waiting for at that concert.
It's not just the UK! In high school in the mid-80s in California, I was in Marching Band and we did a lot of trips to parades and other events, usually in school buses. I would play this on my boom box, and you would have 60 kids - guys and girls alike - air-drumming that big fill every single time. Even today, this can happen if you play the song at a party - at least half of the guests are air drumming along and singing with Phil...
The “gated reverb” sound, which became the drum sound of the 80’s, was found by accident while Phil was Playing on Peter Gabriel’s third album on the track “No self Control”. The producer Hugh Padgeham, put the sound of Phil drumming through the sound desk monitor and through a filter and got this amazing sound. Gabriel had put a rule on the drummers that worked on that album, including Phil, “No cymbals, just drums”. Have a listen to the track “No self control”. The drum break is even more impressive than this one.
"In the Air Tonight" remains one of Collins' best-known hits, often cited as his signature song, and is especially famous for its drum break towards the end, which has been described as "the sleekest, most melodramatic drum break in history" and one of the "101 Greatest Drumming Moments

Definetly one of the coolest moments in music when he hits those drums
I have loved this song for years. That drum drop was so anticipated. The drums lifted out of the stage floor. God that was great
Who remembers this on Miami Vice In the 80s?
Remember watching the show and taping it just so I could hear that song again.
Phil the Shill
The most powerful build up song in the whole history!!! You really can feel it in the air
I see what ya did there 😂😂😂
So glad you reacted to the live version. Goosebumps!!!
The most iconic movie it's featured in is the "train fantasy" scene with Rebecca DeMornay in "Risky Business."
It wasn’t a fantasy. It was a sex scene with Rebecca and Tom Cruise
@@aliseyedzadeh945 Yeah I meant it was Joel's fantasy to have sex on a train, I should have worded it better thanks.
@@leodejongful The Hangover yeah, but Risky Business was released in the early 80's.
The scene from Miami Vice is one of the coolest uses.
Excellent reference. Love that song.
@Dutch Plan Der Linde That particular song came out on the follow-up, Hello, I Must Be Going.
This song and the whole concept is pure genius!
You don't see it often but I love when Brad gets into a song. Like he's having fun and not at work.
It feels like he shouldn't do this if 'having fun' is such a rare part of it.
Phil played every instrument on this song, and then mixed them together on the original release. He is phenomenal!!!
Phil Collins and Phillip Bailey had a great collaboration with "Easy Lover"
Leland Sklar on bass. A legend in his own right.... the dude with the white beard shown momentarily.
Leland has his own UA-cam channel. Leland talks about those tours with Phil. He even jams bass along with those iconic songs like this one.
I love Leland. He's a legend. And don't forget about Chester Thompson. The guy played with Zappa/
Phil Collins is one of the GREATIST drummers EVER. !!!!
Hard to refute that. Not a fan of his vocals though
Underrated Yes. The greatest No. Neil Peart, John Bonham to name but two.
@@philippage5916 .... and Mike Portnoy, Ginger Baker, Danny Kerry....
@@smashleyscott8272 And Mitch Mitchell
Not even a top 100 drummer , and I've been a percussionist for over 30 years.
One of the best songs ever, when he drops those drums, you will FOREVER play air drum solo automatically FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE
A stunning piece of music...a classic...
Such a powerful performance. This is DEFINITELY one of my most favourite 80s songs.
This is important. musically, historically and for generations to come. Great music, craftmanship, must be remembered. Thanx guys.
This song still give me chills
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t turn into the world champion air drummer when that drum drops. ❤
My steering wheel is still broke!
The 80s was the decade of passion from the heart. The current young generation knows nothing of this.
Phil Collins what a writer and instrumental genius
Phil usually closes his concerts with "Take Me Home"...gotta check that one out too!
Cause I don't remember....
PHIL COLLINS YOU ARE AMAZING ❤❤
I ❤ 1st reactions to song they never heard before. Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight" is his CLASSIC song from mid-1980s. My all-time favorite song.
Check it all everybody.
this was basically a throwaway for him, random thoughts , ended up the reord guy liked it so much he kept it. badass tune
60s',70s and 80s were the best times ever for pop music, especially in UK, so many great songs.
He started as the drummer for Genesis. After Peter Gabriel left he was one of the main singers. An excellent song writer as well.
Phil was also the drummer and lead singer of the legendary band “Genesis”
This live version is better than the studio version. Epic! Love it.
This is a great performance. Everybody that knows this song, just waits for that drum beat to drop.
I've never taken to his voice, but his songwriting and drumming are top tier.
The song is a masterpiece. It is very real and most don't know what it means. There is a reason for his passion and the detail and art. There is an emotional vibe and with good reason, if you know what the song means, you will truly get it. I encourage you to look it up.
One of the top 10 music vids of all time😊
this is Phil's Masterpiece and will live forever, until the end of time! and it features the coolest drum break in the history of mankind. period!
Hey guys if you want to hear some more Phil Collins check out the song Mama by Genesis. He became the lead singer of the band after Peter Gabriel (who you guys should also check out at some point) left. Love the videos guys, keep it up.
There's plenty more of his solo stuff without even touching Genesis.
@@mnomadvfx True, but "Mama" is so cool, and very Phil Collins-y. I'd love to see them react to it.
ahah, ahah, ooooohhhh
Definitely Sledgehammer!
Nice Pick. I would also suggest another Phil Collins song - "I Don't Care Anymore."
The Drum riff is really famous in the UK, it was used in a cadbury`s advert and in many other things, and is what everyone is waiting for at that concert.
🦍🥁👍🏻
🍫 🦍 🥁
Always gives me cold chills when I hear this song
"That did not disappoint", lol thats an understatement. He blew the doors off with this performance!
What a song! What a crowd...not one broken head!
"In the Air Tonight" remains one of Collins' best-known hits, often cited as his signature song, and is especially famous for its drum break towards the end, which has been described as "the sleekest, most melodramatic drum break in history" and one of the "101 Greatest Drumming Moments
Big names, big hits, big audiences,,,,LOVED IT!💝
Epic, epic, epic, legendary and I got to see it. 💖
One of the Hallmark songs of my childhood. I still remember it. Phil Collins was one of the first artists whose name I actually remembered as a kid. This song is still a banger!
Phil Collins is a criminally underrated drummer. He was the drummer for Genesis when Peter Gabriel was the singer / front man. Phil Collins also played drums in a band called Brand X where he shows just how good he is on drums.
He is recognized as a brilliant drummer and has been literally for decades by real musicians. (Maybe not the Jonas Brothers/ Taylor Swift/Madonna crowd )
I think he's quite highly rated.
Wdym underrated?
He's the one guy who had the biggest influence on 80s music - he invented gated reverb, that iconic 80s sound.
@@3DJapanI don't think the average fan knows how exceptional of a drummer he is.
@@markallen2984 yeah, my thoughts are that the average fan doesn't know how skilled he is. One of my favorite bands is King's X. Great band and musicians love em and praise them all the time but they don't have a huge fan base.
This was the song I was jamming to when I almost lost my life in a car wreck. Despite that, still love this song to this very day.
One of the best period, heck for me it goes MJ, then Phil Collins, his instrument play is so good! And an amazing unique voice! Also the duse has NO reaction.....
Phil was in a very dark & hurtful place. He played drums since he was 5 yrs old. You are watching Greatness!! A legend, there's 80 thousand people there to watch him
I will never forget the first time I heard this song as a kid in the 80's …. Miami Vice!!
