Honestly, my favorite method of watching DBZ is Dragon Ball Z Abridged. It's just the best version for my taste and attention span. The fighting is shorter, but so is everything else. I can complete it all in a day. It's also my favorite way to introduce brand new fans, or old ones, to the franchise.
I remember that he mentioned that 17 and 18's fight with the Z fighters right after they were released scared away all the birds in the area, at least.
True! Tbh the anime has little 16/Gohan interactions. I would have preferred that interaction and waking SSJ2 call to happen with Trunks, who, in the anime, is seen feeding squirrels and enjoying nature on a few occasions. And Trunks had more reason to interact with 16 (both of them being at Capsule Corp..)
Seeing Goku go off with Uub like he wasn't going to see his family for awhile was SUPER weird considering that not only can he can lap the planet in seconds, but he can literally teleport...
I feel that has been exaggerated over time. You just mentioned why it'd be easy for all of them to see him if they want. They all probably have their own lives to lead. Remember that they often don't see each other for years in the first place. Goku had a kid that his friends didn't even know about at the beginning of Z. Only person this might affect is chichi. And it seems everyone and toriyama forgot she doesn't have a reason to stick around by her lonesome after one year unless she wants to. Maybe she wants to stay near her grandkid after Goten is 18, or doesn't want to live in uubs village.
@sk It really would not of been surprising if she found another love interest and moved on with her life during the 7 year timeskip from the Cell Games to the Buu Saga, Goku literally was not coming back and planned to stay in the afterlife. Hell even when he came back it was just a temporary visit, he only came back to life to deal with Buu because Gohan blew it 😒 From Chichi's pov with how he just dissappears for years at a time it's surprising that she hasn't divorced him. I mean him dying in the Saiyan Saga is not his fault, but staying on Yardrat, staying in the afterlife, and abruptly leaving with Uub would give most people plenty of incentive to find someone else...
@sk Agreed, I have reread Dragon ball and Chi-Chi meets Goku tells him that her father has a gift for him to come back and get. They appears at the end of DB at the Tournament screams and yells that he forgot his promise... In which Goku doesn't even understand his promise and just agrees without a thought... They only meet twice throughout the manga series....
I much prefer the manga for its pacing, and for things like the introduction of nappa and vegeta. I like the idea that we don’t know anything about them before they arrive on earth. The planet Arlia stuff is neat but makes them less intimidating by giving us some sense of their power. What you don’t know is frequently scarier. but I appreciate plenty of things that the anime came up with too! Toriyama was involved in a lot of the filler, so that’s why a lot of it feels very natural. at least some of the earlier moments.
@@duragvon2234 I disagree, I think that knowing less about a character like Vegeta makes him all the more scary, because you already know he's part of a race that conquers planets for a living, but you don't know just how powerful he'd be. The arlia thing makes it so much more obvious how powerful they are, as nappa was able to erase 5 people, and the giant monster thing, and was completely obedient to vegeta.
Unmentioned is the infamous rematch between Goku and Vegeta - both in Super Saiyan 2. The anime had 3 full episodes out of that fight, with epic speeches from Vegeta detailing his motivations and declaring he will not be Goku's second anymore. In the manga, the whole fight takes eight pages. Eight pages! But the "I need to be evil" speech from Vegeta was there.
@@bluefootedbum7209 if their designs were kept the same I would have known who they were Armor , tail, scouter so I would have known they were part of race conquering species ……it doesn’t change anything And they wiping out weak things doesn’t give you any sense of their power at all vegeta was still far stronger then goku
The one anime filler that I truly wish had happened in the manga was the episode 9 of DBZ, where Gohan befriends a robot trapped in a cave. That episode had some pretty sad but heartwarming moments, and Masako Nozawa herself had stated that that was her personal favorite DBZ episode of all time.
Me too. I wish people would remember it more. It's a beautiful episode. I love all the filler with Gohan. It honestly connects the viewer even more to him and his story.
I ALWAYS think of Robo from Chrono Trigger, whenever this Robot is mentioned. As far as I remember, they had the same design too! Might be a reference, since Toriyama drew all the Chrono Trigger artworks. And for all of you younglings who don't know what I'm talking about. Chrono Trigger is arguably one of the BEST JRPGs on the SNES, which still hold up almost 30 years later. Do yourself a favor and go check it out
@@VenomousJoker9097 The episode was totally omitted in the ocean dub which is the dub most of us in NA saw first. It wasn’t dubbed until Funimation redid the whole saga in it’s uncut series. As a matter of fact, I think the ocean dub took that episode along with that dinosaur episode and pieced them together but edited the robot parts. I guess they though the episode would be too boring for the kids then.
I'll be honest, as a kid I grew up watching Z Kai, which cuts a lot of that filler out. But several scenes exclusive to the Z anime also stay, like the moments between Goku and Gohan. It's an interesting middle ground between what the anime did right, and what remains accurate to the manga.
Honestly, i think Kai really does it right. Staying mostly manga accurate but expanding on some stuff outside of the plot that builds relationships and characters is a great use of the medium
Surprised the Bardock special wasn't mentioned here as being completely made up by the anime staff. The most iconic part of Goku and Freeza's relationship in the Namek saga wasn't even written by Toriyama. Toriyama found the special so good he even wrote in Freeza making an offhand reference to Bardock during his fight with Goku.
If Kuririn didn't throw the Kienzan at cell, does that mean that in the manga canon the technique can still be seen as unblockable? Like if it hits, it cuts?
I don't think DB/Z would have been as popular without the anime adaptation. It enriched the characters so much and used it's key moments as the framework to a natural storytelling process by TV scriptwriting professionals. Filler didn't always hit the mark in terms of later continuity but you cannot deny that it was crafted by utter professionals in their industry. There was so much heart and a natural group symbiotic relationship between a vast array of creators, so that even if spurred on by monetary interests, it grew into something quite larger and more significant than Akira Toriyama ever intended. That even occurs in the Manga itself, with many ideas being spurred on by his editors. What a fascinating body of work.
"I don't think DB/Z would have been as popular without the anime adaptation." More like Manga/Anime as a whole . Basically ,in the second half of the 70's,a French guys that was the Director of TF1 (First and biggest French TV Channel) ,went on a business trip to Japan ,he was impressed by what they had on TV (Anime ,ads etc...) and as soon as he got back in France ,he went on another business trip to Japan ,and brought Anime to France ,it spread to some other country in Europe after that (Italy ,Spain ,Portugal ,Belgium) . Dragon Ball (Manga) was started in 84 ,the diffusion on TV started in 86 in Japan ,88 in France ,89 in Italy and Spain and 95 in Wallonia . It popularized Anime ,after that ,in the 90's ,95% of the shows were Anime ,most popular one being Dragon Ball Z ,followed by Hokuto no Ken ,Captain Tsubasa ,Saint Seiya ,Nicky Larson ,Sailor Moon ,Ranma 1/2 . the US only got Dragon Ball in the 2000's I believe ,and decided to make the shameful Dragon Ball Evolution
I recently read all of the DBZ manga and it was interesting noting the differences. And while the anime certainly went a bit overboard on filler (though it’s understandable given the manga was still coming out and how anime was made at the time) there were many anime-exclusive moments that really added to the source material and made things feel more lived in.
@Sonic Why? Cause, sometimes, the filler can be good. Sometimes, the filler gives other characters a chance to shine. And sometimes, it is not good. And sometimes, we don't want to wait 5 to 10 years to watch the next season that will last only a few days in watching.
Funniest thing here: at least for the majority of the italian fandom, they saw the anime first or just it... at all! And when it comes to manga VS anime, I thought you would have included how Goku was potraited in the anime compared to the manga, because Goku is WAY different in the anime. I don't know if you ever talk about the subject, but I would love it
I would like to see that as well. For someone in the USA, Goku was basically portrayed as a Japanese superman values and all which is what made me love him as a kid. When they portrayed him in Super closer to his toriyamas original portrayal of goku it did shock me a bit to see how different they were, and I biasly do like the superman esc one better
The initial Funi dub of DBZ very much altered Goku's characterization to be more Superman-esque (Ex. the Hope of the Universe speech), although it should be noted that even the Japanese version softened his character compared to the manga.
While the name might be anime exclusive, Arcosian would actually be a pretty fitting name for Frieza's race, if you consider the ARC part as derivative of arctic. Oh, and on a note about Frieza's maliciousness, while it might be true he never kills his own minions in the manga, he does straight up murder one of the namekian children with his own death beam while trying to aquire the dragon balls, whereas in the anime he leaves that dirty work to Dodoria.
The name isn't just anime exclusive. It's apparently a dub thing. FUNimation made up the name Arcosian. It's possible nobody in Toei, and especially not Toriyama, has even heard of them!
8:58 This scene where they take a van from two guys drinking coffee at some gas station is in the manga. Maybe not when they drive or something, but the actual robbing of the van is. It take place just after Piccolo went to Kami's lookout and right before Krilin and Trunks get to Goku's House to evacuate Goku.
Really makes me wonder if we'll ever get a "brotherhood" version of Dragon Ball Super. You know one that follows the manga as opposed to doing its own thing.
@YellowSpiderman they're still entirely different. Saying both mediums are "Canon" now is just another way to excuse constant retcon that's been going on.
11:40 - Vegeta helping Gohan during his fight against Cell is a big character moment for him. During the whole saga, Vegeta talks about wanting to do things himself, or about Saiyan pride and Saiyans always wanting to handle fights on their own. Yet at the end of the Cell saga, for the first time in the series, he swallows his pride and steps in when needed.
Always bugs me when people just dismiss anime only stuff or noncanon stuff, the only part I can agree seems really out of place is the fake Namek saga, it's just weird, and thinking back, how did it even happen?
That's why I see most of it as separate timelines. Between the manga, the shows main timeline and future trunks timeline. The movies might fit into the future trunks timeline.
If that's how it's gonna be, then all the Goku haters have officially lost all rights to use the scene at 9:37 as an excuse to chide Goku as a bad father. They'd just be making themselves hypocrites otherwise (not that most of them even care, really). Can't use it as evidence if you're just gonna say it's non-canon.
most of the filler either mischaracterizes the characters, or creates plotholes and the like because it "never happened" in the canon story. if youre just discussing parts you like, then yeah, canon or non-canon doesnt matter, but when discussing the ins and outs of the story nothing but canon matters.
@@saphcal True, but you can't deny that sometimes the filler actually compliments the canon material if it's handled right and lines up properly with the rest of the lore. Not just talking about Dragon Ball, but other anime in general.
For me the scene where Goku meets with Goten for the very first time. The anime makes it all cute and Goten running to Goku and giving him a hug. But in the manga, Goku just points at him and is like "that's my son?" Also, after the scene of Trunks and Goten regaining consciousness, and everything that happened, both Trunks and Goten didn't trust or respect Goku and took a bit to even listening to him teaching them the fusion.
Yeah, I never got the hate for Arcosian name. I actually like the world building of giving them a name. Also, if Toei can give Spider-Man a giant robot and fighting evil space aliens, then its fair to give them names.
I don't think there's anything to hate about it, people just don't like using it because its unsupported by canon. Toriyama could come up with a new name on a whim and suddenly we'd all have to roll back that headcanon lmao, so some would just rather stay neutral until a name is decided on.
Especially since that version of Spidey IS CANON in the overall Spiderverse in the comics and how that Spidey also gave birth to Power Rangers. God I love/hate Toei at times
It's because the Arcosian theory is SO flimsy because: 1 It's a dub only name 2 The aliens given the name aren't even Frezia's 3 The "evidence" for the Arcosian being Frezia's kind is... they are purple and wear robes... because Chilled wore a robe that one time. The robe was a disguise, Chilled said he was a disguised as a member of the Galactic Patrol. So there ya go...
That was a whole product that they made. Not a dub adding a name for no reason. It's not even similar. It's not a big deal but there's also no reason to use the name one specific dub made anywhere else
That part when Trunks was trying to stop Cell from absorbing 18, instead of destroying her, he tells her to run, I'm glad that wasn't in the manga, that made no sense.
4:04 - This is very common when it comes to manga versus anime. If you want an example of how different the two can be, look at Sailor Moon. In the manga, there is little character development, in favor of getting to the action, while in the anime they spread the events out, give characters time to develop, and even change events to give them have dramatic importance.
vegeta removing guldo's head with one funk-o-chop is much better than what anime did. also dr gero squeezing guys neck like a tube of toothpaste actually portrays the androids as pure evil in anime he just pulls a guy through the roof of the car.
In the japanese version there's a background music that plays during that scene I have tried many years to find out what the name of the music was and who was the composer?
Well as you can see in the buu saga, we all know that Goku met Goten for the first time, in the anime Goku hugged Goten, however in the manga, Goku didn’t hugged Goten, all he said was “so you are my son.”
The original Toonami DBZ was my favorite and what got me hooked on anime. I remember it was done by Ocean Dub a before switching to funimation during the namek saga and my kid brain just rationalized it as, "Oh they just got older that is why their voices are different". Ahhh good times, gooooood times.
Heck I still think this way. It gives the experience of watching it more enjoyable, as if you're growing up with them in a sense. Not to mention, I also enjoyed stuff like Piccolo saying "radical" or Vegeta saying "mondo cool." Gave a real life feel to it, like even they are influenced by trends lol
@@Vivi_9 Oh snap that's right! Vegeta was just mocking Krillin by saying "That's right boys, 'mondo cool'" in his head. I still love that he even says it at all lol.
The Saiyan Saga in the anime gave Launch screentime whereas in the manga she's mentioned once and never again. The anime also does the smart move in the Buu saga by having her be part of the people giving Goku energy for the Spirit bomb
The Dragon Ball Filler, like Goku's training with the meeting the Darkness in the land of ice to get the ultra divine water, Sacred Crown, meeting Chuu Lee and Korinto alongside Tien, Yamcha, Chiaotzu and Krillin saving a town from a volcano, and all of Annin's stuff are all good for potential what-ifs.
One of my favourite anime fillers was Gohan running away from Piccolo in the Saiyan Saga, trying to get home to his Mum. But then making that conscious choice that he must train so that he can protect the people he loves. And his training with Piccolo, whenever he got knocked down he would always get up and come back for more. It speaks volumes about Gohan's character and why he fights. I guess it's not really needed as this same attitude is reinforced so many times throughout the series - Except that weird pacifist blip in the Cell games where Gohan becomes a whole different person and acts out of character. I really wish more time was spent on the training parts. They usually do a timeskip over them but they can be some of the most fun parts.
The way I first started watching Dragon Ball Z was well on TV, had a whole Lithuanian dub and everything, then after years of that I watched it a handfull of times both dubed and subbed idk it just never gets old after a while
11:40 So glad the show added Piccolo, Yamcha, Tien, and Krillen help Gohan out. Gives them each a brief moment and also, why wouldn't they with the world being blown up?
It’s because despite manga still being considered comics by people in the ComicsGate community manga itself is entirely different format than comics are, so that’s why in Marvel and DC comics you can show more character interactions, world building, etc etc, but you can’t show it in other mediums that aren’t comics whereas in manga series like One Piece the anime, video games, and light novels can expand more details in those aspects that manga can’t.
My first anime experience was dbz on toonami I didn't know about manga until I was an adult, so nope as far as I was aware everything in the anime including the filler for an embarrassing amount of time was cannon to me, I grew up on the middle of the story basically much like most people in the 90's
The moment that you realize... since you watched the anime for probably 15 years BEFORE buying the manga and reading it... I never really noticed a lot of these things. More that I filled in the things I remembered from the many watches I did in my youth (and still do from time to time)
The anime definitely gave more personality and relevance to the characters. Sure a lot of the filler was padding bs, but a lot of it actually defined on what we loved about the characters and arcs.
I love the fillers of DBZ they build on the characters and gives me more time to see these interesting characters in the day to day in one of the most interesting worlds in fiction.
I'd say the best thing the anime added was making Goku more affectionate towards his family. It made him feel like a much more developed character and that (along with adding the scene of Goku catching a glimpse of Super Saiyan 2 while training with Gohan in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber) changed his character for the better IMO.
I grew up DBZ Kai, which stripped away all the filler and went closer based off the manga. So, a lot of the points is just what I grew up with. Doesn’t help I also read the manga growing up too.
In their efforts to make Goku a better character the animators kinda missed the fact that Goku isn’t really a great guy. He’s one to abandon personal relationships on a whim. Not just what he masako showed here but also he barely even greeted Goten in the manga. Goku is the good guy but he’s not a good guy. Hifl he makes Vegeta look like a five star spouse and father in the improved anime version somehow he’s even less so in the manga.
Damn, that makes the anime seem to have made many changes for the best. Good stuff. And no, I didn't read the manga. In fact, I've only watched Kai but I'm working on a project to create filler episodes DVDs for my own collection by using clips found online.
I grew up reading the manga, translated to my native language. I didn't watch the anime until way later. Probably in my 20s, I think I actually started watching DBZA before the actual anime. But the biggest difference, I feel, is the powerup segments. I never understood the screaming memes until I watched the anime. Maybe they're just plainly shorter in the manga or it's easier to "fast forward" reading manga panels, not sure which honestly.
This makes me think that the anime version of Super is actually a continuation of the anime version of DBZ rather than it's manga. Gregory is there, Frog Ginyu returns, Maron (Garlic Jr. one) is mentioned, Frieza is much more cruel, Barry Khan is an actual character, etc. It also explains why the Super manga doesn't make any reference to DBZ's anime by comparison. One big thing that makes no sense at all, however, is the fact that Gohan apparently doesn't know anything about Baseball in the Super anime. All those DBZ anime references and they neglected the fact that his high school had all kinds of sports he should be aware of? Weird.
@@jamaaldagreatest2748 It's so dumb how they would ignore that but keep all of that other stuff in. They could have at least had Gohan say that he wasn't very good at Baseball or something.
Here's an idea for an alternative headcanon name to the Frieza race. "Saiya" in japanese is an anagram for "Yasai" as in vegetable right? why not do the same with say- the japanese word for refrigerator? "Reizouko" could turn into "Koreizou", and be turned into the race name as "Koreizouan" or "Koreizoan" Just a thought though
You know, I had actually rewatched Z recently, and forgot that the Gohan lost in the forest stuff happened at all. I thought the first episode was Goku and Gohan showing up to Kame House.
There was one bit of filler in the Saiyan Saga I liked, where Gohan actually does travel all the way back to his home, close enough he can see Chi Chi doing chores around the house, but before making those final steps he realizes that he'll be letting people down if he stopped training and went home. Because the Saiyans are coming regardless of what he does, so he should prepare for them. Also the filler on the way to Namek where they encounter a run down, reflective ship full of kids that were orphaned by Freeza's organization. A neat little bit of world building, always hoped those kids were doing well in the Post-Freeza universe and were able to find a place to settle down outside of his reach before he was revived.
Somethings and scenarios to show different sides of the characters and go deeper into their personalities and such are important and that's why the anime should be considered when talking about dragon ball Other writers give the ability to show the deeper feelings and relationships of characters and there mortality and weaknesses and other important things in the world of dragon ball Which is why it's good The Z anime Gt And super arnt exclusively toriya And why it's good for the Z manga to be exclusively toriyama it allows other writers to use them differently and show other side of the characters we would not have seen or given them reason to show if written by one man The Z anime is a different continuity to the manga due to the different writers and I wish people would atleast consider the ideas and physics of the non manga non toriyama aspects and stories of dragon ball I love the Z anime and it's fillers and I wish people would use them more when conversating of the physics and other aspects of the dragon ball world Too often people ignore gt or the Z anime because it wasn't in the manga and I hate that Those extra scenes and scenarios give the characters more depth then they could have expirienced on a few drawn pages The Z anime is filler has been ignored so many times because it wasn't in the manga But dragon ball is a product and different writers help and give ideas and other such things Akira by his lonesome cannot go more in depth with certain characters that need more of it All of dragon ball media is important and should be considered when making what if stories or other such things Og anime Z anime Gt Super anime And all the original mangas should all be looked at and used as official when possible to make a deeper and greater story That's what I love about some of MasakoX is what it's he will always usually add something from different medias to add too the story Sometimes the movies Sometimes gt Sometimes anime filler Instead of ignoring them for not being in the manga see them as official dragon ball media like what they are Officially licensed media from Toei and use them to our advantage to make better stories rather than just following the manga alone Remember the Super anime isn't only written by Akira and neither was GT the newer writers are allowed to explore he characters in ways Akira can't by himself I may be wrong about this but Gt is ending may not have been as touching as it was to the fans if Akira wrote it Different writers can explore the deeper feelings of the characters in ways the original creator can't All I'm saying is don't always brush any official dragon ball media made by the people who own dragon ball as non canon or not important because it's not in the manga Use what you love about these shows and make something great
As a sidenote on a different comment cause the other is too damn long The Z anime and gt also gave us more depth to the world of dragon ball with Hell expansions, and Heaven and a bigger universe and many more planets to learn about and expand the world around
In my headcanon Frieza's race is called the "Frid-jin" from planet Fridge. It would be cool if Toriyama finally explored their species and where they come from officially though...
This video reminds me of when I both read the manga and watched the anime of My Hero Academia. I remember when reading the U.A. Sports Festival Arc, the fights between Fumikage and Momo, between Mina and Yuga, and between the victors of these two fights were glanced over in the manga and just skipped to saying who won, which is bizarre considering one of these fights would play a important part in the Final Exams Arc. Also in the Provisional Hero License Exam Arc, we never see how certain students of Class A-1 past the first part. I really appreciated how the anime included all these fight scenes that didn’t get in the manga, especially the one for the PHLE Arc, which I really enjoyed.
So that's why Super Buu has Piccolo's gi when he's absorbed in Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 and Infinite World. I've wondered for a while why it was done that way in those games (even if it looks better.)
The manga and anime both have their strengths, for example I would prefer not knowing about the saiyans. But that said, if I have to choose, I prefer the anime with it's filler. As a kid, I loved fake namek.
I think the anime being a moving picture captures moments that wanted to be put in but didn't get put in due to drawing restrictions and the anime is just a more expressive version of what the manga was going for.
in the manga, when goku powered up for korin, gohan wasn't supried that goku was super strong but was more suprised that his power was not that big to his own
I usually only care about what happens in the manga because it's the canon , and I take the filler in the anime as something that I shouldn't think or care about, but with dragon ball it's the opposite, the anime really made a lot of scenes of the characters interactions with each other and it made us love them and understand them more while the manga feels sooo fast and doesn't give us time between arc
The biggest thing that the anime added was when Goku and Piccolo learned how to drive: "Eat my dust Piccolo" "Well if its a race you want, then its a race you'll get!"
So I've been a fan of your VA work for years, It's my first video of yours alone I'm watching. i had no idea you were English and that kinda sent me XD
I love the anime because it gives us more than the manga does. Not saying the manga is bad flipping through some if the manga I have found that some if my favorite moments of Z just aren't in there. The battle on Arlea, the fleshed out battle royal between the Nameks and Freiza's men, Vegeta's searching for Goku and his first Super Sayian transformation, Trunks vs Cell. I know there is a ton of padding in the anime but not all the padding is bad.
You know, it would’ve been amazing if Gohan actually failed to become a super Saiyan. The audience thinking he would succeed would’ve been blown away by that and then during the Cell fight he still cracks up the SSJ2 transformation
My first exposure to the Dragonball story was...my cousin exposing me to Dragonball GT Final Bout so I bought the Dragonball Z Budokai games. I loved this. Read through all of the story synopsis (no access to TV and very limited internet access) before reading pirated scans and eventually watching Dragonball Kai and buying the Manga after DBZA got me back into the series.
Small nods like this are why you're our favorite Dragonball Enthusiast. Expert for a more accurate term. You've truly expanded my mind on the series' universe with your what ifs. The what if Raditz, Frieza and Turles turned good being my particular favorites.
I was just complaining about them cutting Gregory from Kakarot, and hearing that he wasn't in the manga was just weird. If they were going to cut one of my favorite characters, they could at least give Kid Buu back his cool hand design! Oh geez, I jokingly referred to them as "Flipper hands" and now I can't stop seeing him as a powerpuff girl. And I guess that's why the road trip wasn't in Kakarot either. I was really upset with that since I always considered it one of the best parts of the entire series. It's weird, Kakarot pitched itself as this "Goku life simulator" yet it felt very much more like Gohan's game, and it seems it was also trying to be more manga accurate... except when it wasn't? I just finished Kakarot incidentally, so that's why I'm using it as such a point of reference, I'd really like to know what was going on behind the scenes there.
Yeah, I really think Kakarot should have rolled with the filler as well. Could even use the original filler from Attack of the Saiyans. Strictly following the manga storyline doesn't suit itself to an RPG well, and it's clearly going for a "play the show!" vibe anyway, and the filler with all of Toei's quirks really is a substantial part of the anime.
You can tell that Takao Koyama was really passionate about these characters from giving us great characters build up moments in the anime version, something you don't get anymore with the current production team, they just stick to the script.
Personally I like the idea that vegeta stayed on earth to become ssj it cements the idea that the only thing that was stopping vegeta from overcoming his own weaknesses was himself and I like that it's it's great lesson for people, sometimes your the one getting in your way
I have to say, as someone who discovered Dragon Ball via the manga and only watched a few episodes here and there, it's really weird to hear about those 'iconic' moments that I have no memory of.
Manga wasn't even a thing here when DBZ first came out in the US. And when we had the Other Dub with the good Nappa voice actor and the memerific Vegeta voice actor. So I only ever experienced DBZ via watching it as it came out on TV. I never really got into manga so.
@@MasakoX I'm such a big fan masako, I'm freaking out that you just replied to me, thank you for making these videos, they really make my day even better, you're the best
I watched the anime with my dad once and have been reading the manga ever since (I don’t dislike the anime or anything, it’s just not very accessible). My dad grew up with the anime, so we often get into arguments over how things happened in the story.
If I could change the anime, I would remove all the filler except for the diver episode, vegeta going super saiyan, gohan going super saiyan, goten going super saiyan, pikkon and otherworld filler. And maybe keep the android 16, 17 and 18 van filler.
The part about Gohan in the woods doesn't sound familiar except from the "kakarot" game. I thought that was fluff added into the game... I've NEVER seen any such scene in anime though
14:05 Confused. "Good Buu is carried away by Vegeta by Hercule instead." Vegeta is carrying Good Buu and Hercule is carrying Vegeta? That's an interesting image xD. Edit: I look up the manga, I see Hercule carrying Vegeta.
The tricky thing about deciding what was added by the anime team vs. Toriyama’s vision; he was pretty involved in making decisions about the anime too. So, while there’s plenty that the anime team came up with on their own, there’s also at least some ‘padding’ that Tori came up with for the anime adaptation.
@@saphcal expect that he was. We know for a fact that Toei would run checks by Toriyama regarding a lot of content for approval, revision, or input. Be they character designs, scripts, movie ideas, or plot points, Toriyama was involved with the anime. I’m not saying he was in the studio or running the show, but he was in fact at least involved in the process. It’s part of the reason he was so dang burnt out with Dragon Ball at the end of Z.
@@Aldrnari956 , your comment is also completely truthful whenever it comes Oda as a writer in One Piece whenever he’s for different mediums of the One Piece manga being adapted too.
mark my words! some day Masakox will release video WITH FAKE NAMEK INCLUDED. also screw super sayan, in that screeshot Gohan is in the verge of gettin ssj3 years before Goku. and then Goku just had to ruin it and cut Gohan's hair.
A good discussion to have really. Many people only see the anime or have read the manga and it's like they miss out on what the other has to offer. I normally don't read any manga and DBZ is no exception, but maybe someday I will.
I only watched the anime for dbz,I never read the manga, but saw some pages of it,I am grateful for the filler and the scenes that toei animation added for the anime was pretty good
Honestly, it sounds like the anime improved upon the manga. I'll take some filler along with more characterization, letting other characters shine, etc.
3:08 - It's one of the only indications that Goku and Gohan really HAD father-son moments until we get to the Cell Saga. So yeah, you'd think the manga would have it, but nope.
A series whose manga and anime are so different and both retain amazing interest was Escaflowne Excel Saga as well as Revolutionary Girl Utena were much better as anime than manga, for instance. As for the beginning of Z, “Gohan chasing the butterfly” I honestly didn’t remember lol.
While "Here's Why" is still the epitome of clickbait (hint hint), you did some good in highlighting most of the interesting strokes of the anime... although you left out Icarus. I understand how easily characters can be derailed this way, but in my opinion nearly everything added greatly improved the show. However, only Vegeta helping Gohan against Cell would be one scene I'd keep the same. After Gohan saved him earlier, it's meant to show that kindness pays off.
I don't remember Gohan getting lost in the woods at all. Now I know that was not in DBZA, and that is how I last rewatched the series, but I've seen DBZ regular 3 times, 4 counting the first half, and I still don't remember there being any scene before Raditz and the farmer, and then Gohan being shown at Kame house. Is this scene in Kai? Because Kai is the only one I never watched. But I never did read the manga so this was interesting. The reason I avoided Kai was because removing filler was the exact opposite of what I wanted. Like in Naruto too, the filler was often my favourite. Moments that dont have to be purely tense fighting, but can just be funny or more relaxed. The tone of DBZ is way too serious to it's detriment. A version of DBZ the anime, that excludes Goku and Piccolo getting their driver's licenses, is not worth watching. I want MORE like that. I want a DBZ anti-kai!... Oh wait, that's DBZ Abridged. Ironically better at correcting the pacing, whilst adding in humor and character building moments. Genuinely, Abridged is exactly what I've always wanted. And Kai is everything I didn't want. I don't want accuracy, i want fun. This is why I really enjoy how common it is for my favourite western shows to have a comic series that I can pick up after the animated series ends, and keep enjoying it. Even if they might not be canon.
Thanks for watching! Be sure to like, share and subscribe for more videos like this!
Also: the ending of the frieza arc in the anime didn't happen, in the manga they skipped over everything and had mecha frieza as a red herring
What if garlick jr's filler arc occured in fake namek? XD
"Tell us more about power levels!"
Probably should have mentioned that the manga was also weekly and only 15 pages then
I heard that, in the manga, Android 16's love of birds is only mentioned before Cell kills him, he's never shown interacting with them beforehand.
All that was missing is bonding with Gohan and seeing hint Gohan hatimg violent fighting
As Sondre already said, that is wrong. You get 16's bird thing right after his awakening
i’m pretty sure they’re a scene where he mentions the birds flying away which in my opinion shows his compassion for birds
That "There is no fake namek, moving on~" line always makes me laugh, and I love that you use it whenever you get the chance. xD

I love how dismissive he is that he won't even go into detail. Yep.
Chi-Chi even owns a aircraft.
@sk It really would not of been surprising if she found another love interest and moved on with her life during the 7 year timeskip from the Cell Games to the Buu Saga, Goku literally was not coming back and planned to stay in the afterlife. Hell even when he came back it was just a temporary visit, he only came back to life to deal with Buu because Gohan blew it 😒
From Chichi's pov with how he just dissappears for years at a time it's surprising that she hasn't divorced him.
That’s not true at all lol. Showing us vegeta and nappa wiping out a whole civilization and eating them, makes them more scary.
@@duragvon2234 differing opinion moment

Do yourself a favor and go check it out
Mr. Robot 😭

I couldn't agree more, I also grew up with z Kai lol.
yeah Kai is the second best way to experience the story behind the manga.
Yeah I grew up watching DBZ Kai and it was my first anime
I grew up with with Kai too, it's very Underated
Honestly, i think Kai really does it right. Staying mostly manga accurate but expanding on some stuff outside of the plot that builds relationships and characters is a great use of the medium
Surprised the Bardock special wasn't mentioned here as being completely made up by the anime staff. The most iconic part of Goku and Freeza's relationship in the Namek saga wasn't even written by Toriyama. Toriyama found the special so good he even wrote in Freeza making an offhand reference to Bardock during his fight with Goku.
Toriyama designed Bardock and his squad but yeah thats about it.

"I don't think DB/Z would have been as popular without the anime adaptation."
More like Manga/Anime as a whole .
Anime is still made that way to this day. If the Anime catches up/surpasses the Manga, it gets Filler...note Naruto as an excellent example of this.
@@forgerofsouls9126 I was referring more to anime going from an ongoing weekly schedule to a more seasonal approach (12-26 episodes).
@@kradeiz Ah, I see. Except, for a few anime, it has always been that way. Vast majority of Anime are/were made that way.
@Sonic Why? Cause, sometimes, the filler can be good. Sometimes, the filler gives other characters a chance to shine. And sometimes, it is not good. And sometimes, we don't want to wait 5 to 10 years to watch the next season that will last only a few days in watching.
@sk most anime I’ve seen doesn’t have that much filler. Also many times non-manga material is really good, which is why they call it adaptation.
When they portrayed him in Super closer to his toriyamas original portrayal of goku it did shock me a bit to see how different they were, and I biasly do like the superman esc one better
he already talked about that years back. It was one of his earlier videos on the channel
@@kylepeters8690 yeah, I just figured out ... woops
@@MemnonXIII I think that's more of the dub differences
#18 also points out her brother's interest in cars. #17 also says they have no need to hurry up chasing Goku.
Really makes me wonder if we'll ever get a "brotherhood" version of Dragon Ball Super. You know one that follows the manga as opposed to doing its own thing.
The anime isn't "doing it's own thing" though. The anime and manga are both canon material.
Nah. The adapted anime arcs are superior to the manga versions for super tho the manga is doing well in its new arcs

I just count most filler as it never existed in any sense. And the anime as separate from the manga, as it is.
One of my favorite additions from the anime was in the cell saga, the fight with cell Jrs was great & I liked everyone helping with cell
Those cell Jrs were so stupid lmao why
For me the scene where Goku meets with Goten for the very first time. The anime makes it all cute and Goten running to Goku and giving him a hug. But in the manga, Goku just points at him and is like "that's my son?" Also, after the scene of Trunks and Goten regaining consciousness, and everything that happened, both Trunks and Goten didn't trust or respect Goku and took a bit to even listening to him teaching them the fusion.
The unfortunate thing is, a lot of the great moments, that he had with his kids, weren't in the manga.
It's because the Arcosian theory is SO flimsy because:
1 It's a dub only name
2 The aliens given the name aren't even Frezia's
3 The "evidence" for the Arcosian being Frezia's kind is... they are purple and wear robes... because Chilled wore a robe that one time. The robe was a disguise, Chilled said he was a disguised as a member of the Galactic Patrol.
So there ya go...
Honestly, "Arcosian" sounds way better than just calling them "Freeza Race".

In the manga, there is little character development, in favor of getting to the action, while in the anime they spread the events out, give characters time to develop, and even change events to give them have dramatic importance.
vegeta removing guldo's head with one funk-o-chop is much better than what anime did.
also dr gero squeezing guys neck like a tube of toothpaste actually portrays the androids as pure evil

Well as you can see in the buu saga, we all know that Goku met Goten for the first time, in the anime Goku hugged Goten, however in the manga, Goku didn’t hugged Goten, all he said was “so you are my son.”

The Saiyan Saga in the anime gave Launch screentime whereas in the manga she's mentioned once and never again. The anime also does the smart move in the Buu saga by having her be part of the people giving Goku energy for the Spirit bomb
@YellowSpiderman What are you talking about? She was in the OG anime, I remember so because I have the entire first season on DVD

DC/Marvel: More is shown in the comic than in their adaptations(animations, movies...).
DB: More is shown in the anime than in the manga.

Agreed, that's what the anime has, over the manga, I felt that way about the original series also.
I love the fillers of DBZ they build on the characters and gives me more time to see these interesting characters in the day to day in one of the most interesting worlds in fiction.
Yeah no
@@lazyvoid7107 Why not? Unlike most fillers like Naruto Shippuden DBZ fillers range from fun exploration of that world to interesting side stories.
Weird.
It's even weirder when you consider (in the anime at least) that Gohan literally played baseball at his school

why not do the same with say- the japanese word for refrigerator?
"Reizouko" could turn into "Koreizou", and be turned into the race name as "Koreizouan" or "Koreizoan"
Just a thought though
More like Rei-zoku. The pun is literally right in front of you
You know, I had actually rewatched Z recently, and forgot that the Gohan lost in the forest stuff happened at all.
Yes, that was a great character development moment.
Somethings and scenarios to show different sides of the characters and go deeper into their personalities and such are important and that's why the anime should be considered when talking about dragon ball
Other writers give the ability to show the deeper feelings and relationships of characters and there mortality and weaknesses and other important things in the world of dragon ball
Which is why it's good The Z anime
Gt
And super arnt exclusively toriya
And why it's good for the Z manga to be exclusively toriyama it allows other writers to use them differently and show other side of the characters we would not have seen or given them reason to show if written by one man
The Z anime is a different continuity to the manga due to the different writers and I wish people would atleast consider the ideas and physics of the non manga non toriyama aspects and stories of dragon ball
I love the Z anime and it's fillers and I wish people would use them more when conversating of the physics and other aspects of the dragon ball world
Too often people ignore gt or the Z anime because it wasn't in the manga and I hate that
Those extra scenes and scenarios give the characters more depth then they could have expirienced on a few drawn pages
The Z anime is filler has been ignored so many times because it wasn't in the manga
But dragon ball is a product and different writers help and give ideas and other such things
Akira by his lonesome cannot go more in depth with certain characters that need more of it
All of dragon ball media is important and should be considered when making what if stories or other such things
Og anime
Z anime
Gt
Super anime
And all the original mangas should all be looked at and used as official when possible to make a deeper and greater story
That's what I love about some of MasakoX is what it's he will always usually add something from different medias to add too the story
Sometimes the movies
Sometimes gt
Sometimes anime filler
Instead of ignoring them for not being in the manga see them as official dragon ball media like what they are
Officially licensed media from Toei and use them to our advantage to make better stories rather than just following the manga alone
Remember the Super anime isn't only written by Akira and neither was GT the newer writers are allowed to explore he characters in ways Akira can't by himself
I may be wrong about this but
Gt is ending may not have been as touching as it was to the fans if Akira wrote it
Different writers can explore the deeper feelings of the characters in ways the original creator can't
All I'm saying is don't always brush any official dragon ball media made by the people who own dragon ball as non canon or not important because it's not in the manga
Use what you love about these shows and make something great
As a sidenote on a different comment cause the other is too damn long
The Z anime and gt also gave us more depth to the world of dragon ball with Hell expansions, and Heaven and a bigger universe and many more planets to learn about and expand the world around
As someone who has read the manga but never really bothered to watch the anime, this will be a quite interesting video to watch.
Super Buu (Piccolo Absorbed) has Piccolo's purple gi in the manga, while in the anime he just wears Piccolo's cape
Same thing I always say !!
in the manga, when goku powered up for korin, gohan wasn't supried that goku was super strong but was more suprised that his power was not that big to his own
I usually only care about what happens in the manga because it's the canon , and I take the filler in the anime as something that I shouldn't think or care about, but with dragon ball it's the opposite, the anime really made a lot of scenes of the characters interactions with each other and it made us love them and understand them more while the manga feels sooo fast and doesn't give us time between arc
The biggest thing that the anime added was when Goku and Piccolo learned how to drive:
"Eat my dust Piccolo"
"Well if its a race you want, then its a race you'll get!"
The only filler we saw in Kakarot, was the driving lesson.
You can tell that Takao Koyama was really passionate about these characters from giving us great characters build up moments in the anime version, something you don't get anymore with the current production team, they just stick to the script.
Okay and? It's not good
Did you skip over / forget the anime-exclusive Cell Games characters? (Caroni, Pirozhki and Miss Piiza)
I bet Mr Frerichs wishes he could forget them.
This is why I watched Kai, already knew original DBZ was bloated by runtime demands
I’d actually love to see you do a DBZ Kai dive at some point. It’s really grown on me
Personally I like the idea that vegeta stayed on earth to become ssj it cements the idea that the only thing that was stopping vegeta from overcoming his own weaknesses was himself and I like that it's it's great lesson for people, sometimes your the one getting in your way
I have to say, as someone who discovered Dragon Ball via the manga and only watched a few episodes here and there, it's really weird to hear about those 'iconic' moments that I have no memory of.
This is why I think they shouldn't have made the anime until after the manga was finished. No one at Toei saw the problems that would occur?
9:11 …I don’t know why, but I wonder if there’ll be a “What if Maron was a canon character”.
Manga wasn't even a thing here when DBZ first came out in the US. And when we had the Other Dub with the good Nappa voice actor and the memerific Vegeta voice actor. So I only ever experienced DBZ via watching it as it came out on TV. I never really got into manga so.
Live action Cowboy Bebop is "JUST cool"?
I wouldn't even pay it that much of a compliment. 👀
Will what if chichi was a z fighter part 8 come out tomorrow?
Yep! As planned. :)
I didn’t read the full Manga until this year ! I actually like it more
i kinda prefer the manga more for its pacing but seeing all the cool moments animated is awesome
I felt some fights in the manga, were shorter than it should've been.
If I could change the anime, I would remove all the filler except for the diver episode, vegeta going super saiyan, gohan going super saiyan, goten going super saiyan, pikkon and otherworld filler. And maybe keep the android 16, 17 and 18 van filler.
"once he goes back to the fish lips" is my new favorite phrase
The part about Gohan in the woods doesn't sound familiar except from the "kakarot" game. I thought that was fluff added into the game... I've NEVER seen any such scene in anime though
14:05 Confused. "Good Buu is carried away by Vegeta by Hercule instead."
Vegeta is carrying Good Buu and Hercule is carrying Vegeta? That's an interesting image xD.
Edit: I look up the manga, I see Hercule carrying Vegeta.
The tricky thing about deciding what was added by the anime team vs. Toriyama’s vision; he was pretty involved in making decisions about the anime too. So, while there’s plenty that the anime team came up with on their own, there’s also at least some ‘padding’ that Tori came up with for the anime adaptation.
no he wasnt and no he didnt come up with it.
The only thing that happened in the anime, which was Toriyama's idea, was Goku eating clouds, that's the only thing I'm aware of.
the world may never kno 🤔
Really enjoyed this video
mark my words! some day Masakox will release video WITH FAKE NAMEK INCLUDED.
also screw super sayan, in that screeshot Gohan is in the verge of gettin ssj3 years before Goku.
and then Goku just had to ruin it and cut Gohan's hair.
I still headcanon that the two illusion Saiyans are the adult Saiyan survivors from Super: Broly like TFS discussed in their review.
A good discussion to have really. Many people only see the anime or have read the manga and it's like they miss out on what the other has to offer. I normally don't read any manga and DBZ is no exception, but maybe someday I will.
A girl named lime holds a special place in my memories for Gohan rescuing a girl and getting decked for it.
9:21 Ah, haven't heard a "B-but Masako..." in a while. XD
Thank you for doing Frieza the justice that DBZ writers never had the balls to do😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
3:08 - It's one of the only indications that Goku and Gohan really HAD father-son moments until we get to the Cell Saga. So yeah, you'd think the manga would have it, but nope.
Are you going to help byte with their version of dragon ball z abridged?
Gonna be fully transparent with ya Masako, I’ve mainly consumed DBZ through video games and TFS.
A series whose manga and anime are so different and both retain amazing interest was Escaflowne
Excel Saga as well as Revolutionary Girl Utena were much better as anime than manga, for instance.
As for the beginning of Z, “Gohan chasing the butterfly” I honestly didn’t remember lol.
Amazing video
