Masako.... Here's a thought I had I don't know if anyone else had it but what if Dragon Ball was a blank canvas what would you do with all of your what ifs scenarios make Dragon Ball, Z, Super Etc making it Epic... so that said I'm asking you to use your Ultra instinct to make this happen oh and by the way it'll be great if it's animated oh don't forget to include R&R.👍🏾👍🏾
The whole point of Roshi using a psuedo-Ultra Instinct had an extra meaning to it. To establish the difference in how Ultra Instinct functions between the anime and manga. In the anime, Ultra Instinct is just yet another limit breaking form. Goku's close proximity to his Genkidama and Kefla gsve him extra energy by association, so his body was able to break through a boundary. Same deal when Vegeta gave him energy directly. There's nothing that lets it stand out as special. In the manga, though, it's clearly a technique. A technique that Roshi has his own, lesser variant on, and showing it off to Goku helps Goku understand. Ultra Instinct is not about powering up and gathering energy to transform. It's about clearing your mind into a state of total calm and emptiness so that your body will react on instinct alone, removing the brief but vital wasted time of thought. And then that gets expanded in Moro, with Merus explaining that being able to remain calm in the face of shock is how to access the Mastered variant at will. And THAT is being expanded in the Granolah arc with Whis saying that Goku shouldn't need to transform to use Ultra Instinct and that the goal is to make Ultra Instinct something Goku is using constantly, whether he transforms or not. It all starts with Roshi in the manga, and I love it.
Whis even admits that he had the greatest understanding of ultra instinct among mortals. This is until goku achieved it. But still, it's a massive accomplishment
Another thing I liked was how Vegeta lost to Hit. He wasn't outclassed. Instead he couldn't use his full power because the Super Saiyan God forms are not so easily used. It made a lot more sense than him being useless against Hit.
I think there’s a double edged sword to that though. While it does make Vegeta seem more impressive, with how they handle it they make Hit look incredibly weak considering they have it that he apparently struggles against super saiyan god
@@paxtonstewart8042 i actually think it's smart. in this way toyotaro made the best he could out of the issue of blue being introduced so early... the form is impressive and strong, but its taxing to use and thus they should have focused on God instead of jumping to blue the moment they achieved the "new highest powerlevel". i don't think it undermines hit whatsoever, i think it handled it better than the anime's "oooh hype hit's getting stronger as he fights" crap. it shows that winning a battle isn't just about acquiring high power or using the same overpowered move. it's about how you use your brains in the fight to achieve victory. anyway, in the black arc right after it, this set up culminates in how both goku and vegeta take on the challenge of using SSB to its maximum. vegeta opts for SSG to conserve stamina and only push himself in bursts, while goku opts for pure strength gain. by the end of the black arc we see that both goku and vegeta have not really perfected the form, and still have a challenge for their growth. ironically, vegeta opts to follow in goku's footsteps as that kind of thinking does align with vegeta's philosophy on gaining strength in the past. meanwhile, goku does not change his approach despite failing to execute the hakai properly. if you think about it, had goku done the SSG-B switch technique that vegeta did, he would have likely progressed towards ultra instinct a bit faster considering how that technique's style is very much like how goku uses UI in conjunction with his forms in the recent arc. in the ToP goku sees his failure when he attempts the principle of the kaioken on blue and still loses to jiren, then learns his lesson from roshi's demonstration of mastery and 17's sacrifice and pulls out UI. Vegeta's anger at staying behind breaks his limit past his perfected blue and he evolves. theoretically goku could do the same, but as the arc aims to show us, that is not meant to be his style, all his years of martial arts under various teachers culminate into acquiring ultra instinct based on the principles he's been learning. of course vegeta's growth takes a bit longer to go over, as it spans his redemption in the moro arc and climax in the granolah arc. if you ask me, the manga is the superior product in terms of story and narrative. toyotaro knows what he's doing ahead of time and pays attention to the failings of the anime
@@LightBringer666 Ha! I knew it! I knew God was the better transformation! And to be fair, Hit wasn't getting stronger, he was just improving his technique. That doesn't require raw power. While I do now have more respect for the manga after hearing and reading all this, Toyo himself isn't without his own problems either. A lot of his writing decisions in the Moro arc prove that. Though he seems to be learning his lesson as of the Granolah arc, *don't expect a lot of people to forget the whole senzu bean thing with Moro any time soon.*
@@LightBringer666 SSB isn't taxing, it's got HUGE ki consumption on startup. with how vagita kept going in and out of blue, his stamina was practically used up.
@@lupvirga that’s literally the definition of taxing. It doesn’t matter if it’s taxing at start up or during use or both. It’s still more taxing than SSG
Not a specific moment, but I love how in the Goku Black Manga arc they only retreat and come back like once? Makes them feel more prepared instead of fumbling and stretching out the plot like in the anime.
and goku black's evolution makes more sense. He only beings to learn super saiyan, and then when he gets fully used to goku's body, can he unlock ssjr. Makes his power up seem more realistic.
My absolute favorite moment is right before Roshi's Faux-Ultra Instinct moment, when he tells Goku to think back on all the lessons from all the teachers he's had over the years, and it then shows a brief montage of each of them. Not only is it nostalgic, but it also works really well towards explaining just how Ultra Instinct works and how Goku is able to finally achieve that state. Comparatively, the anime just has Goku transform randomly while Jiran was kicking his ass.
Actually it was displayed in the anime too When Goku was accidentally hit by a bullet shot by a random thug, and then beerus noticed it In Goku's mind, power level is all that mattered to him at that point so much that he didn't care about getting hit by a bullet That's what he was doing wrong He should not rely on power level alone
in anime version roshi explains gokus backstory that he has came a long way to everyone in their sits while goku was concentrating n focusing his ui against jiren
while the manga rushed the top arc, I appreciated how goku activated ui for the first time and it deactivated in an instant. he accomplished absolutely nothing, and I think that's good. he just tapped into a random power, he shouldn't be able to wield it so well so fast. he did basically master it the second time. also, the anime did a better job at the "mastery" of ui, but at the same time it never made sense that you have to be out of stamina/ki for it to activate. cause...i mean, you're completely tired, how do you become ridiculously more powerful when you're tired? so I also like how the anime doesn't require you to be in a drained state to achieve ui. You can use it whenever, if you have mastered it that is.
@@asianpersuasion4901 what is implied about ui is that it is an extreme mastery of letting not only your body instinctively act on your own, but also that it releases the limits the body places on itself for safety to access massive power. In short not only are they thinking minimistically about basic offense or defense but all stages of the pure ui transformation essentially give a power boost by not naturally letting go of safety restraints. IRL for example the body has natural limiters that halt your body from say using muscle strength that would give you much stronger force but risk tearing apart your muscles or risk tearing tendon from bone and such strength is only dipped into when you are in a fight or flight response. Where I think the boost comes from in power is basically the ki version of the irl response. Goku dipped into his emergency energy reserves unconsciously rather than consciously with a greater degree with each stage of ui. And that would also explain the massive backlash each time had it, being near drained with his first and second usage and risking lethal usage horrible pain with the complete third usage.
The real advantage of UI Roshi is that it paves the way for a much better UI reveal for Goku that's rooted in his character and what he's learned over the years instead of Goku pushing through a plateau against Kefla and then again against Jiren. I mean, how is the Anime's UI any different from a new Super Saiyan form? Much more character based and dramatic, and I'd rather have that even if the power scaling is somewhat dubious. The anime fight against Kefla is super cool, but you could have had Gohan do that stuff for a big moment too. Manga does a much better job of making UI and Ultra Ego feel like real outgrowths of character instead of just an increase in max output.

Manga is not perfect, but definitely a worthwhile iteration, and wish more of the fandom would come to appreciate it instead of exaggerating it's shortcomings. I will forever be grateful it made up for Super Sayian God as well as Vegeta's character, giving both cool moments. When the movie first came out, i was under the impression that SSJ God was gonna be the end goal for goku to achieve through training with beerus and whis, and SSJ blue was like a bastardised, semi competent attempt at SSJ god without the ritual, and i was so dissapointed when it just skipped it all and was made a straight upgrade, completely wasting the previous form in the second movie! Almost as much painfully wasted potential as frost...
@@dmitribrutus5543 You'd think "god ki" would allow the user to use powers of creation and destruction, yet the only thing we ever got from that is hakai, which is cool, but like, really? That's all? @@pepearmstrong3239 What if, instead of having astronomically high power level multipliers, the God forms ONLY had unique special abilities? What if Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue had respectively the same power levels as the base form and Super Saiyan? That way, the previous transformations (Super Saiyan's 2 and 3) would still be useful in a fight, because their power levels would be higher.
In the Dragon Ball Super manga Gohan, Kale and Jiren were honestly written better than their DBS anime versions although I don't think Gohan in the DBS anime was terrible. Especially Kale, imo she was written far better in the manga than anime. She actually had a legit reason to transform, she already had basic combat experience instead of being timid before transforming in the anime and we understand why she is loyal to Caulifa. Kale in the manga in many ways mirrors Broly, they re both very loyal individuals. I honestly see Broly being loyal to Goku the same way Kale is to Caulifa in the future
Kale in the manga can hardly qualify as a character. She is basically just fusion fodder who promptly stops existing after she fuses with Caulifla. In the anime she has an actual character arc where she goes from being timid afraid and out of control in her Super Saiyan form to confident, capable of standing alongside Caulifla and fully in control (the manga version has no such thing). We may not have gotten to go in depth about her reasons for caring about Caulifla so much, the fact that she does is such a pivotal part of her character and drives her character arc that it can at least be forgiven that it has not been explained right away. Also, her reason for transforming in the anime is legitimate, its out of self loathing of her own weakness, while in the manga Cabba has to convince her that she should probably stop Caulifla from getting her ass beat just to save her pride (which is just a retread of Vegeta and Trunks).
@@KameTsunami In the manga Kale alone had Golden Freeza dangling by his tail. Meanwhile in the anime she and Caulifla had to work together just to beat a tired SSG Goku.
@@KameTsunami Nailed it bro, I can accept Cabba turning SSJ2 because at the very least it wasn't straight away and the anime handled his SSJ2 transformation fine but Caulifa legit pissed me off when she did it out of nowhere
Maybe the pacing of the U6 Saiyans’ powerups could have been handled better, but I thought their personalities were written just fine. Caulifla leads a street gang and is well in tune with her power. Kale is her protégé but feels unqualified. It took some time before she could willingly and knowingly access her real power. But it was easy to see what motivated all three characters. Cabba was fighting for his universe, Caulifla was excited about all the new transformations she could learn, and Kale had no idea how strong she really was. There was even some suspense over whether Goku could beat Kefla, and I have never been so happy to see Goku struggle to defeat a woman. So perhaps the real problem was when and how they got their powerups, and their relatively early exit.
Honestly, Ultra Instinct Roshi makes a lot of sense. It isn't like the Angel's version of Ultra Instinct, but it's a more "human" or "mortal" level of it, that could match up to stronger opponents. A subconscious movement of the body to evade harm, that is incredibly fast *because* the mind doesn't have to process it. Like, it's something that I myself have experienced before. If you chuck a ball at me, I consciously go over what I'm gonna do, move left or right. However, in one instance, a friend of mine kicked a sponge ball up next to me, accidentally kicking it towards my face and I only caught it out of the corner of my eye just as it was gonna hit me and in that split second (I didn't have time to consciously process it) my body kinda moved on its own and jerked my head back, dodging the ball. It's a feat that's possible in the real world, so why not in Dragon Ball, right?
@@jeremiahbennett3004 Isn't it based off of Mushin? Flow state is when you're "in the zone" and you focus all your energy (both physical and mental) on a task at hand, while Mushin (Empty Mind) is basically the opposite where you don't focus on anything.
Yeah, this is something you would expect someone of Roshi's age and status to be able to do. Being able to react in a second is something usually taught in Martial Arts.
Roshi's manga moment, in my opinion, is the best Dragon Ball Super moment between either the manga or anime. It's not an "Ultra Instinct", it's instinct, and it calls back to the martial arts that the series used to be known for. Roshi having a heart-to-heart with Goku briefly before it drives it home. It's honestly an amazing, inspiring moment, and shows that there's just so much more to this story than just how hard you can punch a guy. This also actually gives Ultra Instinct a real necessary part of the story. In the anime, it was more spectacle. In the manga, it's a character moment. It's brilliant.
I love how UI was treated in the manga. It wasn't a power up, but a state of mind (ToP, I'm not going to touch Moro arc). It makes sense and goes in line with how Whis explained it to Goku and Vegeta. Also, it was a nice touch that it was Roshi, Goku's first teacher, who got his toe into that state. And the speech he gave Goku was top notch
@@SabeNo-rh7mb unfortunately. It made UI into another transformation that powers up, which I didn't think was any good. When I read the manga, I actually loved it. Made me think of the early days of Dragon Ball (og). It wasn't about who could blow up a planet the best, but about the mindset and philosophy of martial arts. As a martial artist, it touched me
@@akirakiryu1577 I mean, it was differentiated anyways. It was explained that the transformation is just a power booster, as well as the easiest way to use the auto dodge. But the auto dodge itself is simply a state of being that can be used in any form, but higher power also boosts the accuracy of the auto dodge.
@@akirakiryu1577 I mean, according to Whis in the Granolah Saga, it's still not supposed to be equated to a transformation or power-up. What Goku did was an anomaly for lack of a better term. But unfortunately, none of that matters, because thanks to the anime (You know? The version that gets the most sales and exposure to the general audience?), people everywhere still see it as another power-up and are gonna keep seeing it that way. Dragon Ball Fighterz isn't helping one bit.
Anime gohan actually had development tho not just power progression and him just being goku he had a character and we got wholesome family moments with him videl and pan which really shows his character in much better light
Honestly, one of my favorite things in the manga was how they treated Trunks. In the anime they gave him all these weird out of nowhere power boosts, transformation, and techniques so he could keep up with Zamasu, Goku, and Vegeta; whereas the manga revealed that he was made an Apprentice Supreme Kai and could heal the group with the abilities said title granted him. In my opinion, this was way more grounded and in line with previously established lore.
Ehh, I disagree about that one, The Goku Black arc, was better in the manga version, but the one thing I much preferred about the anime, was Trunks. At least he did more, it felt like his arc and not just the Goku and Vegeta show, unlike like the manga. It sucks, because the main gripe people had with the anime, was Trunks being so powerful, made no sense, there was no explanation, but the manga gave us a reason, to why he got a big upgrade, by showing his training with the Kai's, yet he was just a punching bag, most of the time, just a sideline character. The manga had an opportunity, to really fix the anime's mistake there. Plus, he had a much better send off.
@@j04370859 I was never mad about Trunks being stronger than Goku in base form because the lore of Dragon Ball has made it clear that Saiyan Hybrids and Saiyans born without tails have far more potential, but the idea that he can keep up with God level opponents because he got angry is utter nonsense. Vegeta did something similar against Beerus but the difference there is that they made it abundantly clear that Vegeta was still no match. I have no gripes about another character sharing the spotlight, but it needs to make sense and with the way they did Trunks it made no sense. As for the send off, I don't like either of them; the show makes a big stink about how it is against the law of the gods to create time rings and Whis (who is supposed to be completely neutral under penalty of non-existence) just creates one for Trunks and Mai like it is no big deal and sends them off to another timeline where they will be additional copies of themselves. In my opinion they should have either stayed in the main timeline or used that opportunity to make the Supreme Kai of Time canon.
@@AnthonySmith-jj7mp Trunks wasn't stronger than Goku, in base form. I agree that the power scaling was nonsense, but I'm still grateful for what he did, compared to the manga.
@@j04370859 in the anime SSJ2 Trunks was overpowering no god ki SSJ2 Goku, that means Trunks has the more powerful absolute base form. It was even stated by kid Trunks, who can sense power levels. Could Goku easily overpower him with the slightest amount of God ki? Yes, and he did just that in the manga. Which is why Super Saiyan Rage makes zero sense. Edit: Even in the manga, Trunks in SSJ2 was on par with Goku in SSJ3, as stated by Vegeta (an even more credible source than Trunks, who tends towards exaggeration)
In my opinion, the best thing the manga has done was Goku's Ultra Instinct transformation. I mean, the whole sequence of Roshi talking to Goku about his training and his thinking of his masters leading to a natural transformation (Instead of him getting absorbed by a black hole created by his Genkidama or whatever that was) was awesome. It's been favorite "scene" from Super so far
Finally seeing Beerus seriously fight was interesting. I wish we had more of that but what we got was interesting. Having Jiren have a bit more layers was an absolute necessity. However, the quick pace of the T.O.P. was a bit confusing even if we already knew how it would go.
I loved UI Roshi. Especially due to the fact that it was still showing that he was STILL Goku's master, teaching him yet another lesson despite Goku being vastly stronger.
Yeah there are many things that I think are superior in the manga, other than the ones you mentioned I also liked how Shin is actually instrumental in the Goku Black arc in the manga and he is also more knowledgeable in the manga with respect to the anime (in the latter he didn't even know who Zeno was). Not everything is perfect though, the anime shines in other parts, like for instance the episode where Freeza comes back for the ToP, which happens off-screen in the manga. It would be really cool to compile a list of the best things from both mediums and then create a cohesive narravite with those, so that we can have the best version of Super.
Everyone calls it Ultra Instinct Roshi. But its pretty easy to identify as him entering a Flow-State, which is a documented state of mind. Gamers often call it "the Zone" when you focus so hard or are processing in a way that your hands 'just play the game for you'... you don't need to think, you just do. And that's usually when you beat the boss in Dark Souls that you've been struggling against for an hour. You stop thinking and just do, it's what UI was based on as a concept. Roshi just had the Mortal version of it.
UI is based on mushin. Flow state is different. In the zone is being focused. UI is basically dropping everything to let your training kick in via muscle memmory.
"Gamers often call it "the Zone" when you focus so hard or are processing in a way that your hands 'just play the game for you'... you don't need to think, you just do." Gee, that sure sounds _identical_ to mushin, the mental state that Ultra Instinct was based on...
One thing, I also like was, that Dr. Rota was not that pitiful and a laughing stock. Yeah, he was a comic relief character but in the manga version you can take him seriously. We also get a hint, why he was recruited (magic), unlike the anime.
I really like the Goku black arc in the manga since it had more creativity with some explanation. However the TOP arc still has me asking questions. My brain is still trying to process how Kale single handedly eliminated 4 universes and then she lost to Gohan as kefla.
Kefla being around Gohan's level in the manga made perfect sense. I always felt the anime version of the U6 Saiyans was a bs marketing ploy to make them seem equal, and even superior in some cases, to U7 Saiyans. Despite the anime telling us they never faced any real hardships, many were lazy and rarely trained, and had never even heard of a Super Saiyan. Some stick thin Saiyans that "achieved" SSJ2 because of an itchy back a day before the tournament had no business even raising a hand to the likes of Goku or Vegeta. Especially not Super Saiyan 2 or higher given how many years of hardship and training they had endured to that point in comparison to them.
I always did hate that about Kale and Caulifla. Likely never trained a day in their life, but because they just have so much talent, they now, after barely two days, have surpassed everyone post-Goku-Black Saga like it's nothing. Even Gohan still needed a full year to train in the time chamber to beat Cell. At least Broly was trained by Paragus his whole life before he came to earth. *At least Frieza still needed four months.*
@@SabeNo-rh7mb Exactly. Frieza's power boost was clearly bs, and still managed to be less offensive than a "tingly" back having some layabout string beans as strong as the multiverse's most powerful seasoned warriors. Even Goten and Trunks' bargain sale SSJ forms aren't doing that level of work. It was stated very clearly that Caulifla's little gang were just some thieves whose roughhousing was about as violent as a middle school boys locker room. Kale was the typical yandere shy girl in love with her senpai, masking it as simple admiration. And Cabba was clearly the Yamcha of U6. I knew they were overhyped when that little wimp was portrayed as somehow equal to Vegeta in terms of strength, forcing Vegeta to transform all the way to SSB. The U6 Saiyans weren't warriors by any stretch. I'd argue they were barely a league above the Tuffles in combat experience.
The tingley back thing is a martial arts thing. I think Masako even went over it in a video. I'm mean if ya think its dumb that's fine but it is an actual martial arts thing.
@@mdxque8393 I saw the video you're talking about, but Masako presented that as a theory. He wasn't stating that he knew for a fact that Super actually intended that to be the reason they chose tingly backs to explain why virtually anyone could become a Super Saiyan. And yeah, I thinks it's a weak explanation because it is.
The Final boss of Super will require Goku and Geets to work together. Since Goku has Ultra Instinct, Vegeta can freely use his Destruction powers while Goku dodges and keeps up the pressure. That makes sense to me.
What many people dismiss is how much more influence toriyama has over the manga than the anime, overseeing the writing and drawing, signing off chapters before they enter production, designing characters and even correcting some panels, in my mind the manga has without a doubt a higher canon than the anime
I think the way the super manga does far more justice for the Goku black saga than the anime does the fight between vegito blue and fused Zamasu is incredible I recommend you check it out in the manga
I know many won’t agree with this but one thing I liked about the manga was its fast pacing with the ToP. A Tournament that is 48 minutes actually felt that long when reading the manga unlike the anime where 4 episodes could be either 10 minutes or 30 seconds of the tournament. We don’t need to see what every character does or says in a tournament like this since most are there to fill the slots and that only the truly strong & wise will make the difference in it.
What I love about roshi's psuedo u.i. is what preceded it. Goku was just fighting Jiren and not making any progress. Goku says jiren is too strong and he can't match him. Roshi asks, "when did I ever teach you that strength is all that matters? What happened to being a martial artist? " (not what he said word for word but I digress). It was another one of roshi's mentor moments. Then he proceeds to his psuedo u.i. display
One benefit of the Manga and a lot of fan stories I've seen is that when they're not put under the same restrictions the anime does, the writing and choices of what a character does can be a LOT stronger since it's not focused purely on the stuff the anime wants. For example, I have a story which focuses on Gohan and Bergamo but Goku is in it to a limited capacity. The anime likely would've focused more on Goku not the other two, and dictate their actions based on what he does
Toyotaro may be free from the anime, but Toriyama actually has a bigger role in the manga's creation. In addition to actually discussing the drafts with Toyotaro, he supervises every chapter.
@@calladus123 If the anime comes back, they'll probably just base it off of the manga. But the manga itself is not made from bullet point notes. The writers discuss it beforehand, and Toriyama is still lead the author of the story.
I legit HATED Super until the manga. Like you said, it feels more consistent with less chefs in the kitchen. The fights are (in general) better choreographed and characters feel more like themselves. For me, the anime didn't really hit its groove until the TOP, but I think the Moro arc is WAY more interesting than anything that came before it - both anime and manga.
The manga had serious pacing issues until the Moro arc. It is easy to see why. It takes 2-3 weeks of manga to make 1 week of anime, that is why anime have filler. But when the anime is leading the beat, that creates massive pacing issues in the manga.
Same, seriously, I hated the idea of SSB Kaioken X20. And loved how, in the manga, Goku never uses it until he tries it against Jiren, who knocks him off saying "that's not the way you'll beat me", Which leads to Roshi scolding Goku and teaching him UI
As much as I liked Trunks SSJ Rage Form, I can understand why it wasn't in the manga. It's more or less Trunks Full Powered SSJ2 with a little god ki aura mixed in since he was training with his father before his fight with Goku Black and Zamasu in the future. But seriously it would be cool if SSJ Rage was an official form to give something that is only attainable by Trunks and possibly other half-saiyans if it was a means to keep the saiyan hybrids up there with the full blooded Saiyans in terms of power.
The god ki explanation would make more sense if Trunks didn't acquire the form through rage. He would've instead had a calm mind and think of how to condense his ki.
@@tonymishima8657 I mean super saiyan blue is essentially that. Super saiyan God with the power of super saiyan. Trunks couldn't acquire it easily the super sayain god form because of he didn't have a chance of training with Whis or his father long enough since time was of the essence and they had to take down Black and Zamasu before it was too late for Trunks timeline.
@@Mr.turne4293 And in order to combine SSJ with SSJG, you have to perform ki control, condensing it in your body. That can only be accomplished through concentration, not rage.
For sure. Companies need to do something about these release schedules. More staff members maybe. I kno its a business but damn it can really hurt the narrative at times. Toriyama had similar contraints like many others however it really stood out to me in Toyotaro's TOP arc. Did the Broly movie hav something to do with it?
Not once have I ever flip-flopped about UI Roshi. It's the superior setup for Goku's UI compared to the anime, full stop. It calls back some of Goku's earliest training arcs and it makes sense for both characters. In the anime, Goku randomly activates UI form to avoid getting destroyed by his own spirit bomb. That's just intolerably lame.
manga and animation are two different mediums with entirely different strengths. while i agree the DBS manga is better, you're making a bit of a broad statement, considering the animators were forced to work on a weekly crunch with very little pre-production. the manga was given a monthly schedule, and not to mention it was able to look at the anime with hindsight and avoid making the same mistakes. All that being said, i think the anime handled the Tournament of Power better than the manga lmao. Just seems like Toyotaro got told to wrap it up early
@@dandyspacedandy the story is completely different because Akira gave them just an outline and said, " get to this point." Same with the manga. The manga was started after to, so the mangaka was able to see what people disliked and changed it.
I still love that Roshi could gain an edge in a fight once in a while. Plus scaring that one woman off the ring was hilarious because all he did was bulk up and talk.
I like how they build to ultra instinct in the manga. Goku sees it in use when Beerus briefly uses it against the other G.O.D.s and again when Roshi almost used it (in spite of how dubious it is seeing Roshi taking on Jiren). In the anime, it's only mentioned during resurrection F and the explanation doesn't relate to how Goku achieves Ultra Instinct. Everytime Goku is about to lose, he goes Ultra Instinct. It serves more as a deus ex machina than a technique during the anime which is what I liked about the manga version.
Unlike the anime, Manga's Gohan trained after the Golden Frieza arc, he really cares about his friends and felt like a loser, in the anime, he felt weak but kept that form until days before the Tournament of Power I prefer the manga choice, clearly

I say Roshi using pseudo Ultra Instinct Sign was awesome, cause it shows how awesome an experienced martial artist like Roshi can be and with the added benefit that it gives more info on Ultra Instinct and how it requires Martial Arts experience, an Ego-less state of mind and Power. It unfortunately shows that the one thing stopping the Human z-fighters from achieving UI is power since this could have been what allows them to be relevant fighters in the series.
A lot of things I wished came from the manga & were used in the anime. By Arc it would be: 1. Vegeta losing to Hit because he used too much of his power showing Cabba SSB and that SSB has severe limits. SSG Goku vs Hit & Hit's powers can't work on people stronger than him. 2. Trunks' powered up version of SSJ2, SSJ Goku Black, Vegeta's SSG/SSB Switch against Black, Goku's Hakai, SSB Vegito dominating Zamasu. 3. Gods fighting each other, Toppo's crotch shot against Goku & Goku showing all his SSJ forms against him, Frieza vs U6 Saiyans, Gohan vs Kefla, Roshi vs Jiren & teaching Goku not to rely on transformations.
#12 was best, something about Roshi knowing a weird version of UI is os damn cool. He still had something left to show Goku, and that was derived from a lifetime of training. So im here for it. And #13 YES WORK TOGETHER BOIS
Dont forget that Piccolo said that Gohan could only get his battle sense back during the short training period before the tournament. He wasn't at peak strength and he still fought Kefla to a stalemate.
Reason 14: In the ToP Toyotaro thought to have Freeza target the U6 Saiyans out of pettiness and spite, and brutalize them more or less. Which led to: Reason 15: Kale doesn't go berserk because Caulifla was paying attention to Goku, and become a walking joke as a result. She goes berserk because she felt useless watching Freeza maul Caulifla (and Cabba I suppose) and couldn't hold her emotions down anymore after so many years. Reasons Way More: Basically everything about the Saiyan Sisters as characters and their story was much better in the manga to me. The fights weren't even close to as good as the stuff they had against Goku in the anime, but give and take.
I hate how everybody who only watches the anime judges Akira’s writing when it has nothing to do with him, the anime was being produced faster than the manga so the arcs came out differently because toei made their own thing. It has nothing to do with akira
I like the Roshi scene cuz it was highlighted that even though everyone is so strong at the end of the day raw strength isn't everything. I loved the Gohan fights a lot too. I think the manga is great
Masako, I would absolutely LOVE to see a deep dive into og db, your manga deep dives are some off my favorites. And to be perfectly honest, up on the lookout is the only reason I have the spotify app. I actually have a bit of catching up to do with that podcast now that I think about it... woohoo!!!!
Thanks for the video, Masako. The only DB manga I have been playing attention to at this point is Dragonball Multiverse. It is cool hearing about others.
@@Kentrc11 ik I'm just saying if you completely ignore the source material in favor of what's essentially fan fiction can you call yourself a fan don't get me wrong miltiverse is great and there are some other quality fan manga but the current arcs in the official mabga have gone back to the gritty z days in terms of tone and seriousness
Trunks and Goku fight was a lot better in the manga IMO, Trunks ssj2 was stronger than Gohan in the Cell Games and even just as strong as Goku's ssj3 acording to Vegeta, forcing Goku to use the God form, and I like that a lot, because Future Trunks got that strong even though he is by himself and he doesn't have some nonsense hidden potential like Gohan does, he trained like crazy and got that strong through his hard work
Their fight was better in the manga, until the ending, I hated that Goku had to go into his God form, to beat him. SSJ3 has been pushed to the side and now you're telling me, Trunks at SSJ2, is just as strong, the anime did the ending better and made SSJ3 look good again lol
I've seen mention about how Roshi's using UI is... actually nothing new. They'd been hinting to something like UI since classic Dragonball, with specific lines by Korrin and Popo especially standing out, but ending up dropped by Z. So Roshi figuring out a lesser state just feels *right*.
If I'm not mistaken, Roshi can read minds (stated in Dragon Ball). IMO this could help him prevent/dodge one move or another from opponents much more powerful than him.
I’ve always thought that following the Cell Saga, Gohan’s gi should’ve either remained similar to Piccolo’s or been some variation of Great Saiyaman green and black combo. Like, I get why he opted for Goku’s orange gi when fighting Super Buu because he briefly inherited the mantle of Guardian of Earth, but other than that, Piccolo has been his primary and repeated sensei. Oh, well! At the very least, his latest appearance will feature him in the purple gi like Piccolo, so that’s cool!
Forgot to mention that it surprised me. Gohan made a doubled KO against Kefla and on his basic form. He wanted to fight as human and without transformation
Buff zamasu def should've had a spot. The form he took from fusing truly contains qualities from the 2 people rather than anime fused zamasu looking like regular zamasu with a wig like he got it from XV2
SSG appearing in the manga will always be a treat for me with how it's cleverly used. As a side note, can someone explain why Goku failed performing hakai? I know they give an explanation, but we see it work on fused Zamasu and it only really failed because he put Mai in front him so Goku hesitated. At least that's how it seemed like it to me.
But he still pulled it off though. Maybe not efficiently, but was done nonetheless. At least to me, he still got the intended effect, so it feels like a success. Kind of like his first kamehameha. Not as potent as it would be in the future, but still managed to do it. But thank you for the inputs.
Goku himself confirmed he tried to copy hakai but failed to do it and its a retcon because Hakai now has a huge explosion to go with it, Goku has a bootleg version of hakai while Vegeta has the real version.
@@cheeseburgerfreddy6350 Fair enough. I get why they would retcon it to be explosive now, to differentiate UI and now UE. Though personally for me, the hakai eradication that Goku does and what we see in the anime might still be cooler lol
I loved what they did with Gohan in the ToP in the manga, but I hated what they did to Gohan after the ToP in the manga. There was this big build up for him and Piccolo coming up with new strategies and attacks while training for Moro, and they just get toyed with by a person Goku 1-shots without trying when he arrives. It really, really defeated the entire arc for Gohan when that happened, turning him into a sideline character that wasn't mentioned afterwards. I'm ignoring the fact they made Uub as a kid with no training provide exponentially more energy to Goku than literally everybody else on earth, including all the Z-fighters, combined.
@@j04370859 The showcase of their strategies and increased strength was great. The issue was Saganbo effortlessly beat them both without taking a scratch but then gets powered up even more before getting taken out in 1 combo by Goku without him even having to try. The problem was that after all their training they were, combined, still not even a fraction of 1 percent as powerful as Goku when he got back to earth.
@@j04370859 They were all training. The issue is that Gohan had an arc in the manga, and even anime, where he wanted to train to get stronger and get a new form. It is verified that Gohan has the most potential, has the highest upper limit on power, and gets the most from training of any known saiyan other than potentially Broly. For Goku to then come back and have gained exponentially more power over Gohan and Gohan not gain a new form (UI should have been Gohan's, but that is an entire other issue with storytelling) to the point that Gohan gets absolutely trashed by the fodder enemies that Goku handles without breaking a sweat before going on to fight the boss that is orders of magnitude stronger than the fodder is disheartening to say the least.
About Roshi going ULTRA INSTINCT-iSH. I think if any human would do it... it would be Roshi. When Roshi is being a honest master, he is focussed and calm. When he lets his personality out... yea it's gone. Despite what you think of Roshi.. the guy has alot of wisdom and sometimes is reacting on his feet and letting his body move for him. (Jackie Chun for example) If anything.. he did DRUNKEN MASTER Style! Wich is...infact... kinda like ultra instinct. "Letting your body move in a way you would do if drunk, thus being unpredictable and going with the notions" So if really focussed.. I believe Roshi can achieve a "form" of ultra instinct. Not the KI of it obivously.. but the mental state of it and if Roshi could achieve a weaker form of Ultra instinct -sign- his power boost will be insignifcant in the end. Let's say Ultra instinct boost your power level by a thousand in mastered and like 200 times in it's weakest form. Roshi would have a power level of what? 600-900? We know he can't use Ki to fly still and hasn't had any power boosts as far as we know. So 200 times time 600 = 120.000? That's not even enough to keep up with the other humans. Even if it was a thousand time.. he would still be under a million (aka Freeza form 2) and we know Krillin and Tien can keep up with that! So even if we was in "mastered" "sign" or "weaker" and got a significant boost at that moment... he wouldn't be able to hit hard enough to most top fighters. Yes in the anime he beat some of em.. but mostly by his expirence and NOT overpowering them. As I see Roshi.. him having a "form" of ultra instinct fits well with him. Like perfectly well... But he just ain't the guy to keep it on!
0:17 I still have that copy of the first volume that you signed for me at MCM Expo a few years back, dunno if you remember but I was a Lucio cosplayer :D
From what I understand, the writers didn’t want the manga to be the same as the anime since the anime came first. So they tweaked a bunch of stuff so it’s not the same thing but follows the same arcs.
Gotta disagree with gohan vs kefla. Their actual fight happen off panel and we only got to see the end of it. There is also no REAL explanation for how gohan could fight someone as powerful as kefla who is a fusion of caulifla and a legendary super saiyan. Really it felt like another example of just rushing to a conclusion so we could move on to the next fight
Seriously, how is an off-panel fight supposed to compare to all the buildup and payoff that was Goku vs Kefla in the anime. That was a fight with actual dramatic tension. Likewise, Gohan gets a much better fight in the anime vs Dyspo, where we actually get to see him put his tactical mind to good use.
Gohan in the manga, got his power and skill back after RoF with 1 day of training in the gravity chamber. That was x100 gravity I believe, and that alone made him as strong as his Buu saga self. Since then, he has been doing weekly training in the gravity chamber to stay in shape, it is just nobody bothers to ask for his help. This is revealed in the end of the Black saga. Immediately afterwards, he ties with Kefla in base at the ToP. He hints that he could use ssj then, but chooses not to.
This was a very small change, but I loved seeing Black and Zamasu argue when their plans start being thrwarted. They might be the same person, but still narcissistic sociopaths that would inevitably bicker thinking that his own ego/plan is the right one
Roshi being able to dodge Jiren's attack for a short bit makes sense. In history actually similiar things had happened before. Chinese martial artist Yang Lu Chan was a young genius and invented his own style of Taiji. When he was about 22, he fought against the most famous martial artist in China then -- Dong Hai Chuan. Who was, 76 already. They fought multiple matches during a 3 day basis and comes to a draw. If you blow this story to Dragon Ball level, it's pretty much Roshi hold his ground against Goku.
I really wonder how much the Moro and Granolah Sagas will change when they are eventually adapted. I could be wrong, but I don't think that either of those two Sagas has made any reference to something Manga exclusive, so it could potentially be a direct 1-to-1 adaptation. If there are references to Manga exclusive things then those would have to be changed but other than that it could stay the same. Of course, the anime might always completely change it like the Goku Black Saga.
I still cant see why the UI Roshi is not just cool. UI is basically the culmination of some martial arts philosophy so seeing the character that has spend the most time being a martial artist use it is the best way to introduce that concept. The fact that a nowhere near complete version can let him dodge a punch of a god level guy just goes to show how strong that is.
Honestly, I'm all for giving the non-sayan characters more to do. I mean, it only makes sense that an ancient master of martial arts like Kame to be able to master ultra instinct, similarly, I feel like it'd only be logical for Krillin to learn to use god ki to some capacity, given that he used to be a monk and now that he knows it's actually a thing.
Roshi having a type of ultra instinct is perfect, he’s a master with hundreds of years combat experience, even in the anime he does this to the bird guy so I think it fits
Sorry, I prefer Anime Gohan. His character development in resolving his peacetime slack off issue and his problems in maintaining objectivity were resolved in the Anime while the manga put that off panel. His manga fight with Kefla was majorly offpanel. Yes, there is Moro Arc , but I felt Anime US Gohan with his intelligent fighter take was a better predecessor than the US manga version who just relied on his fists. Also, I love his family man scenes, something that is again off panel.

Vegeta switching from SSG to SSB at the point of impact to conserve power against Black will always be the coolest thing
It was so ingenious!
If only they showed that for Vegeta in the anime and overall more of that during Jiren or Moro or Granolah. Granolah would make more sense
@@MasakoX I can't believe you didn't talk about PSSB... IT'S A BETTER POWER UP THAN KAIO-KEN BECAUSE VEGETA CAN USE IT TOO!!!
@@ChefMonke07 What exactly is it?
Although, I do wished they could’ve given unique abilities for Super Saiyan God than switching from God to Blue
There isn't a way to retcon this at all. Ultra instinct requires understanding and a lack of thought. There's no raw power involved at all
Another thing I liked was how Vegeta lost to Hit.
I mean sucha transformation was hinted at in the anime. Wheras manga roshi lasting as far as he did against jiren in the manga is still stupid.
Actually it was displayed in the anime too
When Goku was accidentally hit by a bullet shot by a random thug, and then beerus noticed it
In Goku's mind, power level is all that mattered to him at that point so much that he didn't care about getting hit by a bullet
That's what he was doing wrong
He should not rely on power level alone
in anime version roshi explains gokus backstory that he has came a long way to everyone in their sits while goku was concentrating n focusing his ui against jiren
while the manga rushed the top arc, I appreciated how goku activated ui for the first time and it deactivated in an instant. he accomplished absolutely nothing, and I think that's good. he just tapped into a random power, he shouldn't be able to wield it so well so fast. he did basically master it the second time.
also, the anime did a better job at the "mastery" of ui, but at the same time it never made sense that you have to be out of stamina/ki for it to activate. cause...i mean, you're completely tired, how do you become ridiculously more powerful when you're tired? so I also like how the anime doesn't require you to be in a drained state to achieve ui.

In the manga Kale and Caulifa are as strong as the SHOULD BE, that’s what I like about it
Kale in the manga can hardly qualify as a character.
Well yeah, it was based off of the real life phenomenon known as the flow state
Plus he also used it as a way to gi e goku one final lesson (since goku has moved on to being taught by whis)
@@jeremiahbennett3004 Isn't it based off of Mushin? Flow state is when you're "in the zone" and you focus all your energy (both physical and mental) on a task at hand, while Mushin (Empty Mind) is basically the opposite where you don't focus on anything.
@@MercuryAlphaInc idk, the flow state to me is when you just do things really well without even thinking, but yours makes even more sense tbh
Yeah, this is something you would expect someone of Roshi's age and status to be able to do. Being able to react in a second is something usually taught in Martial Arts.
Roshi's manga moment is the only thing that justifies his inclusion in the ToP. It serves Goku's journey to achieving Ultra Instinct, and it's cool.
Spittin

Too bad the anime and video game teams didn't get the memo. Now, everyone thinks of UI as more than what it really is.
The anime still made it a state of mind, they just didnt emphasize it as much
@@SabeNo-rh7mb unfortunately.
The version that gets the most sales and exposure to the general audience?), people everywhere still see it as another power-up and are gonna keep seeing it that way. Anime gohan actually had development tho not just power progression and him just being goku he had a character and we got wholesome family moments with him videl and pan which really shows his character in much better light
I prefer anime Gohan because he actually develops instead getting a power boost and calling it a day

Trunks had a much better exit, in the anime version, I meant to say.
Awesome, honestly the last manga arc has been really good. At least for me.
It's been really improving fast now that the manga is the only base instead of having to split it between two mediums.
@MAID IN HEAVEN FAN 🅥 No about the Cerulean arc I believe. Moro ended up meh in the end imo, but the current one seems solid

I liked Kale being a secret badass
Max Holloway

Also what "marketing ploy?" I'm still waiting for my Caulifla merch!
I think the way the super manga does far more justice for the Goku black saga than the anime does the fight between vegito blue and fused Zamasu is incredible I recommend you check it out in the manga
i loved how easily vegito was defeating zamasu and how he cut zamasu's hands off
@Martin Toledo just like it should be ( The Chad fusion being on top the whole fight)
Yeah, Vegito was better in the manga, I still wish he wasn't included in this arc though.
@@tonymishima8657 I'm still curious if they still go off of toriyamas bullet point notes and go from there.
@@calladus123 If the anime comes back, they'll probably just base it off of the manga. But the manga itself is not made from bullet point notes. The writers discuss it beforehand, and Toriyama is still lead the author of the story.
What kind of restrictions are you talking about would you mind elaborating
I legit HATED Super until the manga. Like you said, it feels more consistent with less chefs in the kitchen. The fights are (in general) better choreographed and characters feel more like themselves. For me, the anime didn't really hit its groove until the TOP, but I think the Moro arc is WAY more interesting than anything that came before it - both anime and manga.
I think even I might wanna check it out now after watching this.
And loved how, in the manga, Goku never uses it until he tries it against Jiren, who knocks him off saying "that's not the way you'll beat me", Which leads to Roshi scolding Goku and teaching him UI
even the anime version is masterpiece
I believe that in the Maga made Fused Zamasu able to regenerate properly unlike the Anime
Personally I like the idea that Ultra instinct has more to do with the fighter skill and experiance then power level.
Bully Maguire to Gohan: You're an embarrasment.
Trunks' rage form, was a Toei creation, that's why it wasn't in the manga.
I like Gohan vs Kefla. But it would be better if the detail of the fight is shown.
For me, it's just about everything. Manga is just a better media than anime, especially when the studio animating it is Toei.
AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
manga and animation are two different mediums with entirely different strengths. while i agree the DBS manga is better, you're making a bit of a broad statement, considering the animators were forced to work on a weekly crunch with very little pre-production. the manga was given a monthly schedule, and not to mention it was able to look at the anime with hindsight and avoid making the same mistakes.
All that being said, i think the anime handled the Tournament of Power better than the manga lmao. Just seems like Toyotaro got told to wrap it up early

The battle between GoDs & Gohan’s showings were highlights for me.
Honarable mention to Roshi vs Jiren. Best fight

By Arc it would be:
I still think Roshi and his pseudo UI was sick because it showed off his experience and mastery of martial arts
#12 was best, something about Roshi knowing a weird version of UI is os damn cool. He still had something left to show Goku, and that was derived from a lifetime of training. So im here for it.

Which led to:
Reason 15: Kale doesn't go berserk because Caulifla was paying attention to Goku, and become a walking joke as a result.
I preferred the anime version, of TOP, but definitely, the female Saiyans, were better in the manga, I agree with everything you said there.

Trunks putting super sayain 3 goku on the back foot in just super sayain 2 was nice
I would add the Perfected Super Saiyan Blue, i liked the concept of the transformation being mastered.
Also, the all "im not a namekian, I'm the reincarnation of the demon King Piccolo" was dope
Id argue inexperience, since its a technique that he would rarely ever have a need to use it.
It shouldn't have taken long enough for him to grab Mai is the implication. Beerus instantly Melted Zamasu while Goku's took a while.
Huh? Gohan beat 73, then in their 2nd fight, both Gohan and Piccolo beat him, they defeated that pink henchmen, but Moro was giving him energy.
@@j04370859 The showcase of their strategies and increased strength was great. The issue was Saganbo effortlessly beat them both without taking a scratch but then gets powered up even more before getting taken out in 1 combo by Goku without him even having to try.

(Jackie Chun for example)
If anything.. he did DRUNKEN MASTER Style! Wich is...infact... kinda like ultra instinct. "Letting your body move in a way you would do if drunk, thus being unpredictable and going with the notions"
So if really focussed..
Psuedo-UI Roshi is awesome no matter what day of the week it is.
0:17 I still have that copy of the first volume that you signed for me at MCM Expo a few years back, dunno if you remember but I was a Lucio cosplayer :D
Ah, yes! That was a cool cosplay. Lucio ended up being the character I was best at when I played that game.
From what I understand, the writers didn’t want the manga to be the same as the anime since the anime came first. So they tweaked a bunch of stuff so it’s not the same thing but follows the same arcs.
Super needs an ultra or atleast ssblue lvl human that makes gohan realise he can get as strong as goku and vegeta again.
Gohan vs Kefla, felt more logical, than the Goku vs Kefla fight in the anime, but neither fights made sense.
From now on Manga Gohan shall be known as Mangohan
the GoD's fight should have definitely been in the anime.
Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super created a contradicting canon timeline in a nutshell.
I love watching your videos instead of fixing my upload schedule, thank you for making such great content
Honestly my favorite thing that a lot of people skip over is the fact that caulifla is only a super saiyan, it makes much more sense this way
The thumbnail nail pic XD
Maseko you got no chill.
They won’t be heavily changed because the anime isn’t ahead of the manga like it was for the first part of Super.
The manga is ahead this time, it won't be changed too much.
Roshi's version of UI, wasn't the problem, it was him taking on Jiren. Honestly, the writer should've had him fighting someone else, not Jiren.
I like Goku using Hakai. People forget Goku can see a move and copy it from Dragon Ball
The way Gohan was treated through half the Buu arc and all of Super is downright criminal.
I do kinda like roshi's "ultra instict lite"
me too i liked it, it helped goku to get closer to ui
Always wonder why they gave gohan theirs yamcha ish hair style wish he kept the cell sega hair style
There was a side chapter in the manga where gohan said that he usually uses the gravity training room to train
That's OK. You do you :)
Master roshi was strong enough to blow up a Moon in dragonball. So I didn’t see a problem with roshi use ign some kind of UI.
