    As a corporate video producer and audio engineer I have high expectations for how to videos. Too many are really garbage or drawn out lengthy productions that say nothingof use. HOWEVER, This video is presented well with informative information and is a true 5 star gem. I couldn't remember how to put new string on my trimmer. As soon as I began watching this it all came back to me. Although my cover took a little persuasion to get off due to the dirt inside, the basic concept was spot on. I ended up using a large pair of channel locks to help get the reel to move off of the spindle and past the locking mechanism. I just wish that You Tube had more videos of this quality and less fluff. Anyone can post a "video" to tell you how to do something, but most aren't worth the time spent to watch them. This one is worth every second.

    Great Video.
    I watched over a dozen videos.
    This is the only one that has the knob on the head like mine.
    I was able to replace the line quite easily once I knew how to do it.
    I have saved the link for when I replace the line again.
    Likely 10 years down the road.
    Thank you for the easy to follow steps and directions.😁

    There are many videos on this, so I suspect that many people are having problems. Some claim that you have to press the spool down t before turning clockwise. This one does not and that is in agreement with the manual that came with my trimmer. This is the best that I have seen and it works. Thank you

    Thx. I found that the no frills Bunnings cord I bought had a lot of memory in it and tended to spring everywhere when attempting to drop the spool
    Back in. I also found it easier to cut the end in an angle so it would fit into the holding notch (and there there seemed to be two notches, one being deeper and better to grip the start of the line.

    Is this the same technique for the DeWalt DCST925 20v Max string trimmer? I see some videos regarding the DCST920, but they load about 20" of string and simply fold it in half as they insert the string through the holes to each side of the head and then begin winding it onto the spool. Much different than what you show here. My DCST925 model does not have any tabs to the side, but has the lock indicator as you showed on this model you used. With me having rheumatoid arthritis, removal of the head to string it sure seems very hard at present. Maybe I am doing something very wrong though. This was about the only video which seemed to show how to set up the string changing as it likely should be done on my own model. The manual is worse than a Chinese camera manual in explaining such. It is also a mixture of French and English with the owner having to flip back and forth to see the very small photos which go with the text they are reading. DeWalt isn't all that much better at their website in providing pdf owner manuals, either. The lock indention on my own string trimmer is as black as the actual head, so it makes it difficult to read. Thanks for sharing the video, but I need to know if this works okay on my own model or am I watching the wrong video in trying to load it correctly. Thanks.

    I sure don't want to be contrary... I'd have good working wrists and hands if I haven't FOUGHT to get the spool to turn where the white nub clears that window, then it takes a heavy duty pair of scissors to slide under the edge and fight another 10 minutes to get the spool to come off. I've thought to spray some deep creep but that shouldn't be necessary...you proved it should turn. It's crazy and a huge turn-off trying to get a job done. I got stuck with the 40V that DeWalt evidently didn't care about it's customers that paid $250 for their brand. Is there any spool that will fit this 40V?

    I've had nothing but trouble with my new 13" string trimmer. The trimmer won't feed the line correctly except for about 3 min running time. Then it just spins with no line feeding through the holes. I take it apart, and have noticed the line seems pinched, I rewind it per these instructions and have tried others on youtube, reassemble, turn it on... same thing. I wind it loosely, I wind it tightly, same thing.... I have tried the bump feature and it might work- might not- before it spins again with no line feeding through the holes.
    Does anyone have any suggestions? I've written 2 notes to Dewalt Cust Serv but they have been really slow to respond. Thanks. (I have about 2 weeks before HD return policy expires)

That has never worked for me it only worked when I had it brand new out of the box. 2 years has gone by and everytime i try and the line breaks i just give up. id literally pay someone to spool it for me. im going to try the actual dewalt line and see if that makes any difference but i feel im just wasting my money buying dewalt line

    • @JONSDIY

      Yes. Wind the top one first. Then the lower. So you can use the pinch slot to hold the line out of the way as you wind the second one.

    I keep seeing reviews from people that say the spool wont stay on and keeps falling off. Is this just people not understanding how to lock it back into place or is this a legitimate issue?

    • @JONSDIY
      @JONSDIY  7 років тому +2

      sinnedam. I think it stems from not originally knowing how to get it to open. And when prying it open they damage the little notches. I can see it being an issue then. I have had mine 6 months now without an issue. But who am I to claim their defaults are not legit? I love mine!

    • @Billllyubbda
      @Billllyubbda 7 років тому +4

      No, it's been a pain for me. It is locked in place as shown in this and other videos ,but then by the will of God, just comes off. So back to locking it in place and again, not staying locked. Very frustrating. Love the tool hate the locking system. My guess, many may come to know this issue do to no fault of their own. But 4th try seems to be working now. This video is very clear on how to install the new string. Well done.

    • @JONSDIY
      @JONSDIY  7 років тому +3

      Thanks for the feedback Bill, your comment makes me think I should not whack it on the ground so hard when releasing more string. I thought that the locking mechanism was a bit small and since it was plastic could eventually wear down. A tool should not have to be treated delicately.

    Good tutorial but I am NOT a big fan of replacing the line on a trimmer but I'll do it because I have to. I'd much rather Dewalt make the trimmer spool with the line already professionally installed. I've done this twice and the line always kinks up and won't feed. I end up having to rewind it once or twice before it takes. Lousy way to run a railroad. Not like Dewalt to take the cheap way out but it is what it is. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably buy a Ryobi or one of the brands that makes the spool loaded & ready for bear.

    • @JONSDIY
      @JONSDIY  6 років тому +3

      Marilyn/Dennis I feel your pain. But what I have learned is that if you let the string hang down and wrap it with the natural curve(bend) of the string you will not run into the problem you are having. When you go against the natural bend then the string expands inside the spool and twists causing problems. I got this bit of wisdom from Doc Durant himself. :-)

      Thanks John. I wound it the same day I posted and only had to rewind it
      once. It took. Probably heeded your advice without knowing it lol.

      What a lot of people don't know or just don't tell you is ALL DeWalt cordless string trimmers as of June 5th, 2019 come with a much better string trimmer quick load type spool head like this one www.dewalt.com/products/accessories/outdoor-accessories/dewalt-quickload-replacement-spool-head/dwo1dt995 DWO1DT995 DEWALT QuickLoad™ Replacement Spool Head
      NOT the POS original one that looks like this www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-Replacement-Head-and-0-080-in-Line-for-Cordless-Battery-Operated-Bump-Feed-String-Grass-Trimmer-Lawn-Edger-DWO1DT980/302366383 The following comment I made above on May 25th, 2019 says "What a POS trimmer head! WT# was the engineer that designed this POS thinking! I bought one of those old style POS heads on the 20V Brushless model & I hate it so much I want to smash TF out of it with a sledgehammer! Now everyone should know why DeWalt changed to a speed loader type trimmer head on the newer string trimmers they make! I bought mine (P/N DCST920P1 on Homedepot.com June 7th, 2018 with the DeWalt DCBL720B 20V Brushless blower in a kit for $199.00 for both w/4Ah 20V battery & charger + tax & free S&H. It is now May 25th, 2019".

      You'll spend quadruple the price if they went to prespooled heads. I had a trimmer like that and basically went through one spool each week and they cost about 4 bucks a head. At that price, I could have a whole spool 225 ft in a month. But like you I just bought dewalt brand line for the first time since the original line that came with it, since I had minor issues with non dewalt brand line so figured I'd pay up for it. Just used it yesterday and I have the same problem as you if not worse, every 6' one side or both binds up or breaks off and doesn't spool out and I have to remove the head and lead it back out again and go another 6'. Very frustrating and cannot figure out for the life of me what the problem is, I restring it exactly like the video and it still isn't working.

      I’ve tried spoiling loose, spooling tight, following the natural curve, and I only get about five minutes of trimming before the line breaks and I have to remove the spool to unpinch the line - EVERY TIME! What am I doing g wrong?
