Man thank you so much for this video. I saw that slot and ligned it up and held it with a screwdriver. What I didn't realize is that it was left handed thread. After watching this I got mine working just like new. Thanks again
For the last 18 months I've not let the lawn crew edge or use a weed eater in my back yard. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG I didn't like the fact that they just kept cutting the edge of the lawn further and further from the rock lining the flower beds and leaving bare ground. And the grass was trimmed or scalped several feet around trees, etc. It was a constant battle with them so I told them to just mow and no trimming. I have Zoysia grass so it grows pretty slow. Obviously after a while it could use some trimming. I'm in my 80's so I can't do much of it myself. Finally I decided that if I could find a lightweight battery powered trimmer I might be able to do some light trimming. I decided to buy the LST201 20V trimmer. And it works great for my needs. I have back yard with about 150' of flower beds and several trees to be trimmed. I can lightly trim the whole yard with a single charge! The grass I trimmed was only a few inches high but the trimmer was more powerful than I expected.
TYSM! I was having the same problem w bump stock and lack of videos! I knew how to restring but not how to take it apart. I was about to get another weedeater until I stumbled upon your video. Thank goodness you showed step by step how to put it back together lol! Works great now! I concur w using small amounts of string. Again, thank you soooo much for posting this!
Thanks for showing me how to get the head off my trimmer. I bought a new head and came straight to UA-cam to find instructions on changing it out. Your video had me finished in under 5 minutes. Thanks again!
Thank you so much! Mine has been sitting in the garage for several years now because I couldn’t figure it out - I got a gas trimmer after getting frustrated at how the manual was zero help (and at the time, you hadn’t made this video… nor had anyone else). Two or three minutes of fiddling and now it is back to work. Which is a good thing, because the gas mower was KO’d yesterday. Thanks again!
After watching your video, I was able to fix my Dewalt trimmer in 10 minutes and it now runs like it did the first time I used it. The advice about using shorter string per load is another great tip. Thanks
No manual, and no factory advice on this stringer head. Purchased on sale at Home Depot, and this is a different head than most DCST920 Trimmers. Thanks so much for putting this out there. Maybe I can get mine to advance now.
Im 13 years old and my neighbor needed help with his mower, so i fixed it and then he said something about a weedeater so i looked at it and it wasnt feeding right because the previous owner didnt know how to string it and it was all clogged with grass and a fish net, thanks to this amazing video right here i was able to get the weedeater fixed.
I spent a good hour messing with my strimmer trying to get it apart, and then another hour trying to find a video to fix what I’d done... absolute life saver!
You're a life saver. I was losing my mind trying to figure out how to restring my weed eater; I was beginning to believe I made a bad purchase. Thanks for the help.
Thank you Jason for taking the time and trouble to demonstrate the correct method for reloading the spool. Very much appreciated. I will look out for more of your calm, helpful, top tips. Cheers to you, Tim
You, my friend are a lifesaver. I bought mine, two years ago. I never could figure out how to take it apart, clean it and make it work again I thank you very much.
This is the beauty of UA-cam! I had this exact problem. Could figure out how to get the head off. Watched the video and no problem! Runs like new now. Many thanks Jason!
Great video, wasn't sure what rotation to wind new string. A tip for extended the string while in use is to pull and release the trigger. Then while the head is still spinning, but not being driven by the motor, bump it. Gives you more control over the feed and less wear on the unit.
Upgraded my Dewalt 20V DCST920 with an Echo Speed Feed 400 from Home Depot (local, here in Collingwood, ONtario). Easy to switch out directly, no need for all that included washer/spindle/nuts/bolts interface set that’s included. Most happy and grateful. I owe it all to the youtube content experts in this forum. Biggest thanks!
You are awesome! I bought my weed eater last year and the string lasted a long time. I looked in the manual which was totally confusing and I was just about to throw it out. Shouldn't be that much effort. You saved me! You did a wonderful job of explaining how to release the spool if I needed (which at this time I didn't need) and even how to restring it. DeWalt should thank you as do all the owners I see.
Just noticed I have texted you before to thank you for going to the trouble of making this video.. it’s been brilliant to recap as I had to replicate your cleaning and reassemble the motor just as you did. It’s saved time and acute frustration. Cheers to you Jason
This was perfect, thank you! I have struggled with that thing and given it more than my polite opinion more than once. With your video, I finally figured out why the pop-out was not working: had accumulated grass and junk crammed under the spindle. Went to the garage right after I watched this and ten minutes later I was weedwhacking away! Thank you!
We stuck the screw in the holes and stopped the bottom from moving but the top ridge will not turn clock-wise. At first we were just going to re-string but the outside hole would not line up with
So glad I found your video. I actually had an issue that I have yet to read about anyone else experiencing that involves the plastic piece you’re inserting at 2:32 (with the bolt set in it) and the housing it sits in. That piece was seized and would not turn, so despite cleaning out all of the grass, my string still wouldn’t advance. The bolt slid easily out of that plastic piece, but the plastic part was actually stuck in the housing you drop it into. I needed to whack it hard with a rubber mallet to remove it. Once I did that and reinserted it, the whole mechanism functioned again. Very odd since I don’t understand what caused it to stick. Anyway, thanks so much for the great video!
Thank you brother. I could not for the life of me find a video anywhere on how to take off the head. I have had trouble with the bump feed since I bought mine. This helped a ton. Also, nice garden!
This is a life saver, thanks for the video. The Dewalt instructions are awful, and most videos on here conveniently miss out the head removal hint, where the screwdriver is inserted into a small hole. Great job thanks.
Thanks for this. I never thought about grass blocking the bump action. I talked to another owner who found a plastic half sphere, like a door knob bumper, and glued it to the bottom bump unit. Now he can just slide the weed whacker across the ground, cutting at grass height, without gouging his lawn or tossing rocks and dust.
Thank you very much! I saw a different video where I was told to ratchet the housing to wind the string. Then I found you. Your video had me up and running in 5 minutes!
Thank you, Jason Sieberlich. My son knew the secret, as the helpful person at our hardware store showed him the secrets a couple years ago when he purchased the trimmer. He was out of town and I decided to do some trimming. You are an effective demonstrator and narrator, sir.
One of the better videos out there for the Dewalt trimmer. After mine coming off, I watched this video and decided to return it. I then purchased the Ryobi string trimmer. Comes with 18 volt battery. Also comes with spools already to go, just pop it on. Much lighter in weight only weighing 7.2 lbs. Used it tonight, and loved it!
Very helpful. Line jammed and your video helped me figure out how to take the whole assembly apart. My model is different, but the principle of looking for a slot above the housing to lock the drive train so you can unscrew the live head (clockwise) is the same for all models.
Extremely helpful video with some humor and humility to boot. Refreshing to know that it’s necessary to pound the top on at the end because it won’t snap otherwise. Well done sir.
This is the best video on the internet about this tool that has a different head then the others with the same part number. Thank you so much for this video.
Fantastic. Yes, I have the DeWalt DCM 561 P1S, 18v cordless strimmer, and the bump to get a bit more line out wasn't working. I found the slot and put in a screwdriver, and turned the bump head clockwise to remove it. Dismantled it and found tough bits of grass or straw lodged between every adjacent plastic component. No wonder the spool wouldn't slide in and out to enable more line to be released. Great job. Chris, in Twelveheads,Cornwall.
You sir are a lifesaver. My grandparents had this weed wacker when I visited them today. I tried doing some work done on their house. I needed to change the wire, but the cap was filled with dry grass. 👍
thank you for sharing this. i melted the 2 pieces togther at 1:29 i think from running it for way too long and seeing this video helped me realize i needed to hammer it out to break it free.
Jason, Dewalt ought to pay your for this instructional on how to fix bump head issues, and at the very least to know how to clean out the housing to unclog it from debris. I followed every step, and though it works much better, I haven't gotten the bump mechanism to work correctly. Cheers and thanks again.
Thank you for the video friend I tried for an hour to remove mine then realized i had the power of UA-cam and great made videos like yours for help , thumbs up to you
Enjoyed this video. I was having trouble getting the string to advance. Did not have any debris that needed to be cleaned out but did observe that the spool did not slide up and down and interact with the spring. Lubricated the metal center with silicon lubricant and made sure that the spool moved freely up and down the metal center piece and would reset readily with the spring. This solved my problem and the trimmer head works like new.
Thank you for the suggestion for lubricating the metal center with silicon and checking to see that the spool moves freely.Your verbal and visual instructions were easy to understand. Also like your suggestion of using short string lengths to avoid tangles in the head.
This is a good detailed video... I ditched all the DeWalt spools after trying all iterations of them... and went with the speed feed 400 from Echo/Shindaiwa... it's a direct fit, no adapters etc... and just works better and lasts longer. The dewalt design has a weak cap that you'll be wearing out quickly.
Great Video. Even DeWalt doesn't have a video showing how to bump and feed out more line, or how to clean the spool, which wasn't feeding out any line when I bumped it down, like my Walmart Trimmer always did.
A most useful video. Thank you. I'd once figured out how to load it, which isn't intuitive. I needed to clean it out and your video made it an easy demonstration.
I was only looking how to restring this model and cleaned it out after seeing what was in yours. Mine was wayyyy more gunked up and jammed full of grass than yours. I'm surprised mine was still spinning. Thanks a lot for the video!!
Bought one this past summer, could not figure out why the string would not advance. Same problem you showed plus it was strung wrong from the factory. This was a great help. Thank you
This is great, thank you very much! I got so frustrated trying to get the line feeder to work, I called Dewalt and told them the next stop for this thing was the trash. Apparently there is a better designed replacement head they'll send you for free. But without your video, I wouldn't know how to get it on there. Thanks!
Thank you so much! I have been struggling with mine as well! It kept getting hung up on itself like you said. I will now go clean it and start over! Thanks!!!!!1
Thanks so much. I was wondering for months how to remove the head. Also I sprayed a bit of WD40 in it to get things moving better. Have an awesome day.
Thanks from Ireland, I couldn't find any info on the stock head either. I was winding the string on as per your video but was fairly sure there had to be a different way as it seemed a bit clumsy. Was a bit surprised that this is actually the correct way. There you go!
Takes 2 screwdrivers to get a firm hold on the spool. One for the head (as shown in video) and one for the spool trim hole. Now you can get a firm hold to twist clockwise to take it off.
I just purchased a Dewalt trimmer yesterday. I like to tear things apart before actually using them just so I have an idea how things work before they break on me. To removed the factory string flinger, I just used the Hex key that was supplied with the unit for installing the handle and string guard.
Thanks - that was exactly my problem and you helped me fix it - and yes -I was equally frustrated on the lack of videos for this particular model! Got a like and subscribe from me !
Nice video Jason, I don't like to bump feed mine as it can damage the head/lawn so I've found that if you squeeze the top and bottom of the head together, finger and thumb, I can pull the line out till its clicks in the head , pull the slack out of the opposite line, and away you go .Repeat if not enough line comes out .👍👍😊 Same model but U.K.
There is almost no other information about this on the internet.. and the owners manual is of limited help... and some versions of the manual ( for the exact same model number) are useless since DeWalt made running design changes... This was very helpful.
Thank you for taking time to do the video I bought the weed wacker for my 85 year old dad he struggled for a long time with it they don’t seem to have the standard bump type anymore, the display one at Home Depot has it but you open the box and it’s this type!!! I called dewalt they were no help at all Thanks again!!
Thanks! I couldn't find a video that confirmed my model came off the way all the others did, and it was SO tough to get loose I wanted to be sure before I put the strap wrench on and forced it.
Thank you! Couldn’t figure out how to clean the weeds from behind the trimmer head. Had no idea that I have to use a screwdriver as a stopper. Great vid!
Good video, I've used mainly petrol Stihl strimmers & the heads all need a good clean out especially when cutting wet grass, this is my first electric & I've yet to use it, so this video will come in handy.....
Thank you for this vid! Very helpful. I couldn’t find anything on this trimmer head. The newer model is slightly different but this method still worked
As stated in an earlier comment, you don't have to remove the spool cap to reload line and if you hold the spool cap stationary and twist (wind) with the spool grip cover instead of vice versa, the line will wind smoother and you should be able to load more line without it getting in a bind.
Thanks for the video, was having the same problem with mine, took the head off and cleaned out the grass stuck in there and it works like it is supposed to now
Probably said this last year already, but this is the greatest video ever made.
Ha thank you.
Thank you for this post. I used it to 'fix' my trimmer. I hated that DeWalt until I learned how to clean and load it from your video.. now I love it.
Man thank you so much for this video. I saw that slot and ligned it up and held it with a screwdriver. What I didn't realize is that it was left handed thread. After watching this I got mine working just like new. Thanks again

This guy is GREAT!!!!! Goes the extra mile. Makes it easy enough for an old ma n like mr
Thank you
Still helping people 4 years later brother. Thank you! 👍🏻
I couldn't find anything to show how to do this but your video! As a widow, I so appreciate your video. Thanks Jason
I was almost ready to just maylay my dewalt trimmer, but i found your video and it saved the trimmers life. Great video
I've received a fair few of these comments. They make me happier than I would have anticipated. So, thanks for commenting and glad it was helpful.

This was helpful. I could not find a video that clearly explained how to align eyelet. Thank you !!!
You, my friend are a lifesaver. I bought mine, two years ago. I never could figure out how to take it apart, clean it and make it work again I thank you very much.
Excellent.
One of my favorite U toobs. Very helpful and (probably unintentionally) funny. Thank'ee kindly.
Lol thank you.
Many thanks Yours is the only one that addressed the issues with the Dewalt
Glad it helped
your video fixed my trimmer in 10 min thanks for posting this useful info
Glad it helped!
These videos are why I love UA-cam. Thank You Sir!
This is the beauty of UA-cam! I had this exact problem. Could figure out how to get the head off. Watched the video and no problem! Runs like new now. Many thanks Jason!
You are very welcome
Read tge instructions you got with the tool I did its all covered 😉
I too spend my days leaving self important comments on UA-cam.
Thank you for your video....great .

Thank you so much! Even going back to the store they could not help me with this! The video hit the spot and saved me a lot of money.
I just bought the same line trimmer and couldn’t work out why the line had stopped bumping out.
Awesome walk through, thanks for putting this video up
You are welcome and glad it was helpful.

Awesome

@@dalewalters7649 Mine was stuck on pretty tight also... I had to grab the outer edges with both hands and yes, turned clockwise.

Thank you and thank you. I did the same thing and was only able to find what I did buried in some forum. Glad it was helpful.
Thank you the directions that I have don't even go with my Dewalt trimmer. I so appreciate this!!!!!
Same. It's why I made the video after I found it in some forum. Glad it was helpful.
Good Job Jason, your right this right now is the best video for this string trimmer ! !
This is a life saver, thanks for the video. The Dewalt instructions are awful, and most videos on here conveniently miss out the head removal hint, where the screwdriver is inserted into a small hole. Great job thanks.
Thanks Jason Very helpful vid
Incredibly valuable. This process is not intuitive, and this video made it all possible. THANK YOU!
Agree, definitely not intuitive (gee thanks, Dewalt!). I'll be a-savin' this video.
Awesome. I appreciate that.
One of the better videos out there for the Dewalt trimmer. After mine coming off, I watched this video and decided to return it. I then purchased the Ryobi string trimmer. Comes with 18 volt battery. Lol. Thank you.
This is the best video on the internet about this tool that has a different head then the others with the same part number. Thank you so much for this video.
Fantastic. Yes, I have the DeWalt DCM 561 P1S, 18v cordless strimmer, and the bump to get a bit more line out wasn't working. You sir are a lifesaver. My grandparents had this weed wacker when I visited them today. I tried doing some work done on their house. I needed to change the wire, but the cap was filled with dry grass. 👍
Glad to help someone help someone else.
thank you for sharing this. i melted the 2 pieces togther at 1:29 i think from running it for way too long and seeing this video helped me realize i needed to hammer it out to break it free.
Jason, Dewalt ought to pay your for this instructional on how to fix bump head issues, and at the very least to know how to clean out the housing to unclog it from debris. I followed every step, and though it works much better, I haven't gotten the bump mechanism to work correctly. Cheers and thanks again.
Amazing. I have the 40 v modelDCST990 and it has this head. None of the Dewalt materials explained how to do this. Thank you.
Good to know some other troubleshooting options.
Thanks guy, I had the same trouble and your video was the only on to show me, I didn’t see that little hole. Thanks again.
Oh my gosh! Thank you for this. I was losing it trying to figure out the restringing … happily back in the yrd. Thank you.
I was only looking how to restring this model and cleaned it out after seeing what was in yours. Mine was wayyyy more gunked up and jammed full of grass than yours. I'm surprised mine was still spinning. Thanks a lot for the video!!
Your video saved me!!! Searching everywhere, thank goodness I found your video!
Glad to hear it was helpful.
Thanks for sharing. My DeWalt trimmer was giving me grief. Your video helped. Thanks again and shout out from Dallas, TX.
126,179 views. Obviously a common problem on a common trimmer. Thank you for making this video.
Lol yes. Thank you
Bought one this past summer, could not figure out why the string would not advance. Same problem you showed plus it was strung wrong from the factory. This was a great help. Thank you
Glad to help.
Thank you. Your video was far more helpful than the manual and other sources I found online. Thanks for helping others out.
Glad it's helpful.
Thanks Jason, great video. Solved my issue. I like Dewalt products, and this one concerned me, but your content puts me in a better place.
This is great, thank you very much! I got so frustrated trying to get the line feeder to work, I called Dewalt and told them the next stop for this thing was the trash. Thanks so much. I was wondering for months how to remove the head. Also I sprayed a bit of WD40 in it to get things moving better. Have an awesome day.
I got tired of doing this and replaced the stock head with the Dewalt quickload head. Works 1000 times better!
Thank you very much for the video! I had the same problem after 10 mins in some high grass and weeds. Your video helped me fix the issue in 5 mins!
Thanks Jason I just ran out of string on mine and wasn't sure what the process instilled . You made it look simple enough too!
Thank you for this! Was extremely helpful! Had a ton of plastic “thread” from weed block fabric wrapped around the spindle!
Thanks from Ireland, I couldn't find any info on the stock head either. I was winding the string on as per your video but was fairly sure there had to be a different way as it seemed a bit clumsy. Was a bit surprised that this is actually the correct way. There you go!
This was the video I was looking for with that same head. I do appreciate the content on the trimmer!
Takes 2 screwdrivers to get a firm hold on the spool. One for the head (as shown in video) and one for the spool trim hole. Now you can get a firm hold to twist clockwise to take it off.
I just changed mine while watching your video. Excellent job and you made it so simple. Thank you!
I just purchased a Dewalt trimmer yesterday. I like to tear things apart before actually using them just so I have an idea how things work before they break on me. To removed the factory string flinger, I just used the Hex key that was supplied with the unit for installing the handle and string guard.

You’re a genius. I’m subscribing based on this alone. You were spot on about all the other videos featuring the other head.
There is almost no other information about this on the internet.. and the owners manual is of limited help... and some versions of the manual ( for the exact same model number) are useless since DeWalt made running design changes... This was very helpful.
DEWALT just have ZERO instructions on most of their products... makes me want to change to a brand that is helpful
Awesome! Happy it was helpful.
Great vid!
Your video saved me time in figuring how to change line & clean it,,,thank you
Thanks, I was sitting here trying to figure it out. UA-cam and you saved the day.
Great video. I was able to get the trimmer working in just a few minutes after watching the video.
thank you so much I was having a difficult, after watching your video thanks God I know how to restring now. Really appreciate it.
Good video, I've used mainly petrol Stihl strimmers & the heads all need a good clean out especially when cutting wet grass, this is my first electric & I've yet to use it, so this video will come in handy.....
This just saved my life thank you!
thank you for making this video. I had the exact same problem and you showed me how to fix it. Great video well presented. Again, thank you.
Thank you for this video. Perfect instructions for even a single lady to do.
Awesome. You are welcome.
Lifesaver here! Thanks for the vid she is back in service now.
Thank you thank you so much. Two hours struggling then I gave up and found your video. Success.
Thanks for the video,it took me longer to type this than it did to replace the head of my trimmer
Thanks my dude!! I've been cooking up the string wrong the last 3 years..
Thanks Jason, exactly what I was looking for . Worked exactly the same on my 60v. Agree, all the other vids seem to be for a different head.
Thank you!!! I was getting so frustrated trying to figure this out. Using shorter pieces is the best tip. Mine 2as constantly getting bound up.
