I purchased the same unit, ran ok for probably the first 30 minutes of total use time. Started experiencing similar issues, would run a very few minutes and stop, with about a total of 60 minutes run time, smoke started coming from the motor and it shut down. Never ran again. I sent it back to DeWalt, they have repaired it and it's being shipped back to me. Hoping for better results when I get it back. I do like the tool, just hope it works. All the trimming I've done is light work no over grown tough grass or weeds.

My Dewalt has been a smoking pile of crap. From the string feed, to intermittent stopping and short battery life on one battery. I've had it for 4 years, don't use it that much, and I am gong to buy a different brand of trimmer. Thanks for making these videos, but at this point, trying to fix my Dewalt is like putting lipstick on a pig.

Have the same model now for five years and mine wouldn’t start the other day. Cold unit and fresh battery so no overheating. Will have to take it apart to see if I have a loose wire somewhere??? Otherwise has been a great trimmer for 5 years and I have a 175x200 lot.

Warning - Not using the shield could cause the trimmer line to extend too far and WILL cause the motor to overheat. The blade installed on the shield keeps the line at the correct length.

Yes, totally. I do notice I have to shorten the line fairly often.

I probably wouldn’t use it anymore to be honest. How old is it? Maybe contact DeWalt.

Yep definitely and with a heavy heart... not buying the Dewalt. Again thanks for the honest and thorough review.

Shane, Thanks for watching. I have a few DeWalt tools as well and they are pretty decent, but not impressed here. Definitely going gas next time.

I hate this model. I'm on my second XR trimmer and stopped working like the first one. Junk. I bought the 60v and it's great no issues going two years strong

This is a maintenance item listed in the manual. Mine has lasted almost 4 years but has suddenly stopped. Head ticks...

I have to take breaks with this product. Use it for 10 minutes, then take the battery off, blow it down to cool it off, super frustrating.

I have the 60v trimmer and it started smoking down by the trimmer head. Nothing is built to last anymore.

No kidding! I'm going gas next time, just for the amount I actually have to trim. The battery is so nice for its convenience, but if it's not working a good portion of the time, that's not convenient either.

my weed whacker did the same thing. Well, I opened it up and what I did was took a normal battery with two wires to the positive and negative and connected it straight to the motor to make sure my motor was still good and that it will stay spinning, which it did and I let it run for 30 seconds pulled on the trigger and stopped so I ran it again with the battery connected to the motor and let it run a little longer and then open it up to check the gears inside about half apound of grease was inside gears I don’t think that much grease shoulda😮 be in the gearbox actually created friction how much is it tried pulling the trigger again now it runs perfectly and doesn’t get hot. Thankfully save me from breaking down my whole Weedwhacker. You’ll know if you have a bad motor motors if you connect the battery to it and it stops running. p.s do not remove the guard. The string will get too long and they will wear your motor down and they will cause it to get hot and smoke so keep your guard on can’t stress enough.

No doubt! I agree, I just get so tired of the guard but I see it’s super important to have it on. I still think this thing is such garbage. Will be worth while for me investing in gas next time.

I have the Dcst920 model and took of my sheild after yrs without and now it is suddenly doing this as well. It gets hot at the top by the battery so i figured it was the motor at the top but now that i see this video i think the motor is at the bottom? I am so confused! What a piece of garbage if you just cant operate it without a shield? Now I have all these batteries and it was not even the batteries and i am stuck buying another dewalt if i want electric ha
