      This is why I love the Sixth Doctor more than any other. While I dislike the new series having made The Doctor essentially a god, he is nonetheless a being on another level than the species he protects. I feel that Colin Baker's portrayal was the most realistic one could have in that situation. He's a highly intelligent rogue alien from an advanced race that effectively goes around, fine-tuning the universe the way he wants it. How could he NOT have an ego?

      @@WindyREDPanda And this is why it’s better to let a new Doctor pick their own clothes. David Tennant wanted a long coat like Tom Baker, and he got a coat and he looked awesome in it! Meanwhile, Jon Pertwee wanted a modern suit for his Doctor, but was forced into the smoking jacket. Nothing against the cape of course, I like the cape, but I definitely think a modern suit would’ve worked great for the Doctor’s exile on Earth. THE GRINDING ENGINES OF THE UNIVERSE!
    THE CRUSHING BOREDOM OF ETERNITY!
    *insane laughter*
    The Doctor for a very brief moment goes mad upon realizing he can’t die, can outlive most of the people he cares about and the fleeting sense of adventure in the role of a hero will inevitably lose its luster at times.
    Sure, it is just the regeneration messing with him, but that split second lapse in sanity from what could be an existential crisis is still unsettling.

    As bad as the episode was, Colin Baker’s energy, ability, wit, charm and enthusiasm in the series and job really made it a must see. They did find a unique if not distinctive gimmick for the 6th Doctor as a manic, bipolar split persona instead of just the irritable shouty , unpleasant figure.

      I really wish they had kept up the manic bipolar persona, at least, have it come out in small outbursts like this throughout his run as the Doctor. That would tie in nicely with the whole Valeyard plot with a festering malevolence inside him that he needed to overcome in order to become the 7th Doctor.

    • @digipeeper
      @digipeeper 3 роки тому +16

      dibdap237 that’s what I finally said in the last 20 years after re-examining the Colin Baker era. In other words let Colin play himself as the 6th Doctor instead of JNT and Eric Seward writing the same loud irritable nonsense that just repels fans. They did it right in the comic strips with the much more whimsical character.
      Overall the subplot of the 6th Doctor wanting to be in isolation as a hermit. That is because the Spectrox really whacked the Doctors regeneration so hard that his nerves and personality needed actually healing to get it right.

    • @tomnorton4277
      @tomnorton4277 Рік тому +5

      @@digipeeper Name of the Doctor implied there's another reason why the 6th Doctor was so erratic. Granted, this idea was introduced long after Colin Baker's era but when the Great Intelligence jumped into the Doctor's Time Stream, Vastra specifically stated that one of the places where the Doctor died was Androzani. One of Clara's echoes no doubt prevented the Intelligence from doing enough damage to disable his regeneration but considering Peter Davison actually thought he was dying and Colin Baker suffered from bipolar disorder for a while, it seems the Intelligence got closer to destroying the Doctor than usual.

    There's a LOOOOT wrong with Twin Dilemma, but none of it is Colin, who is magnificent. It's just frustrating the writing does such an awful job of introducing his Doctor.
    Having the Doctor become erratic, dangerous even, that's fair enough. The problem is that there's then no real moment of redemption for him as the story concludes, particularly in terms of his relationship with Peri. He needs to re-establish her trust (and in doing so, that of the audience) and for reasons I can't fathom, the script instead just has him beome a little less unstable and then sort of stops Mestor - and even then, that's only through Azmael's sacrifice (The Doctor's entire plan is basically just to kill Mestor).
    What Twin Dilemma desperately needed was a genuine act of bravery from the Doctor, ideally to save Peri's life. Without that, his redemption doesn't feel earned. And given the decision to have this story conclude season 21, that meant this was the last impression people got of the new Doctor for almost a year, before his first full season began in 1985. And sadly, that meant a lot of people had already made up their minds, based purely on this story.

    • @NerdX151
      @NerdX151 4 роки тому +21

      Yeah, the story literally ended with the Doctor saying "I am the Doctor, whether you like it or not." It almost felt like the line was directed at the viewers. The writers were basically saying "We want this to be cancelled. Please stop watching the show"

      Are you guys forgetting the scene where the Doctor outright said "I must go to her!" when he realised Peri was in danger? Just after the regeneration, he starts to fall into short periods of paranoia, which he can't remember. At first they're disturbing and shocking, (trying to choke Peri) but they gradually become rather funny as comical as they lessen ( wanting to become a galactic hermit). Peri toughens up, too, fighting for the Doctor to get back to his old self. And he does recover in the end of this story. It's an interesting situation, the Doctor struggling to get back to being the hero from a period of near insanity. But it's often not appreciated by fans, which is sad because Colin and Nicola play it with a lot of commitment and energy.

    1. Colin Baker
    2. Sylvester McCoy
    3. Patrick Troughton
    4. Matt Smith
    5. Peter Capaldi
    But this is just my opinion.
    This story isn't great, but Colin Baker is the only thing that keeps the story from being 100% terrible. Personally, I like to consider Attack of the Cybermen the true first story for this Doctor, and that this story was just a bad dream that the Doctor had.

He did the best he could with the poor costuming and sub par writing choices by producer John Nathan-Turner, neither of which Baker had any control over. I think it's sad that he basically got made a scapegoat for the show's problems. That being said, he did have a few really good episodes, such as "The Two Doctors" (which saw the return of Patrick Troughton and Frazier Hines) and the entire "Trial of a Time Lord" arc.

    A very fine actor doing his best with material that was often subpar and some shockingly stupid creative choices imposed upon him by the production team. Plus the unprofessional behaviour of a BBC Controller who publicly criticised a BBC production which was starved of funds and sabotaged by the broadcasters mismanagement. Mr Baker was an absolute professional under trying circumstances. He did some great work, as you can see above. What might have been? Many thanks to Big Finish for giving Colin Baker the opportunity to fully explore his interpretation of this beloved character.

    • @tost6956

      Season 22 is anything but 'subpar', it's one of the best in the show's history. Where is the insight here? How is this different to any other comment you'd see on any other comment section in any online content vaguely related to the 6th doctor. You can parrot the portentous phrase 'what might have been?' to your heart's content - but what do you want? Well I don't know - what might have been?

    • @defanged9630
      @defanged9630 5 років тому +2

      @@tost6956 Please read my comment again. "Material that was often subpar" That is a general statement, in relation to Mr Baker's era. I thought it was obvious that a lot of Mr Baker's era was solid with some great material and one story that is arguably a stone cold classic. However, there are many moments and a couple of complete stories that do not work.
      Season 22 is indeed, a very strong season with at least one outright classic story. The very prescient "Vengeance on Varos." The season is also littered with misjudgements. The Cryons of "Attack of the Cybermen" are painfully panto, just ridiculous and let's not get into "Timelash". Change is at the heart of the programme's longevity. Both in front and behind the scenes. That should have happened in 1984. It didn't.
      We're told that the Producer's job was a poison chalice that no one wanted to touch. Perfectly understandable when budgets are shrinking, BBC production practices are outdated and you have a Controller who trashes the programme, complaining that it's outdated and it's production values do not hold up to U.S. shows. Something he could and should have done something about. His answer was to put the programme on a 18 month production hiatus. What might have been? A new production team and a broadcaster working with Colin Baker, rather than against him.
      A move to single camera (16mm film) production with the improved visuals that it allows. A 10 x 50 min Season, co-financed by a international production partner. Sound familiar? Would it have been a tough change? Absolutely, but not impossible. That didn't happen. The programme struggled on with talented people trying to do the best with what they had. Mr Baker was replaced. A new Script Editor tried, admirably to rebuild the programme.It was cancelled. the fans kept the spark alive and the rest is history. It is possible to love the programme while also recognising and commenting on what doesn't work.

      @@defanged9630 All the scenes of Colin Baker & Faith Brown are perfectly written & performed.
      DW is better than any other programme, so by copying other programmes (shooting on jittery, dusty 16mm film with muffled audio, & mismanaging the budget & slowing down the pace to a halt by producing single-part, 50-minute stories), would not improve DW, it would do the reverse.
      Look at Star Trek TNG. They blew their budget on film, a massive ship interior & a massive cast, so there was no budget left for them to "explore new world" or "seek out new civilisations". All they did all day was heart-to-heart scenes between stiff, humourless cardboard cutouts.
      Instead of wishing that DW was a boring, American Star Trek spin-off, just watch one of those boring, American Star Trek spin-offs.

    • @defanged9630
      @defanged9630 Рік тому +1

      @@FreeAssange Thanks for Your response. Firstly, 16mn film is not inherently dusty or jittery. Those issues are introduced by poor camera maintenance and older telecine technology. The "Spearhead From Space" blu-ray shows the gorgeous results of shooting on film. Muffled audio? Audio is always recorded separately. Mixing, dubbing in post before conforming to the picture. Muffled audio is not related to film.
      Star Trek:TNG is rightly regarded as a worthy successor to the original series. However it is not perfect. The first two seasons are rough as the series had a rotating roster of writer's who found Gene Roddenberry's concept of a perfected humanity, a nightmare to write for. The series finally hit its' stride in its' third season and produced some of the best science fiction on television. They didn't blow their budget on 35 mm film. That format was the crux of U.S. television production until the 21st century shift to digital production. CBS Paramount brilliant HD remastering of the series shows the fantastic results of shooting on 35 mm. Your description of ST:TNG, better reflects modern Star Trek under Alex Kurtzman's guiding hand. Re-working DW into 45-50 minute episodes does not slow down the pace. Quite the opposite. Exhibit A, the revived series. Yes, we agree DW is the best programme on TV. Just, without the panto, please.

      I’ve never heard anybody critique *this* specific scene, though. As good as this scene and some of the other ones are, people generally dislike TTD because of the rest of the story (ie. the space police stuff and the annoying twin geniuses) rather than this bit, so it’s kind of disingenuous to say that people have poor taste and point to this scene as an example of that, when this isn’t even the part of the episode that people have a problem with in the first place.

I haven't actually seen Arc of Infinity tbh and I wasn't aware that it had *that* bad of reputation, the only criticisms I've heard about it are of the pointless section taking place in Amsterdam, so I guess I'll have to give it a watch. In terms of the new series, I'm not really sure to be honest. It would most likely be a 12th Doctor episode, but even then the number of choices are vast (Twice Upon a Time, In the Forest of the Night, Hell Bent, The Magician's Apprentice to name a few).
