How Lancet Drone Works | Exploring Aerial Kamikaze Innovations

- Опубліковано 14 тра 2024
- The Lancet 3 is the largest model of the series of loitering weapons, sometimes known as suicide or kaamahkahzi drones.
Developed by the Zala Group, a subdivision of the Kalashnikov.
But What is the big deal with these Drones?
It's all about the financials!as it costs around 20 to $40,000 to produce them.
whereas the Kinzhal hyper sonic missile can cost around $10 million.
The bottom line is even when they are destroyed by anti-aircraft fire like the gehpard , it can still be produce in large numbers in a short amount of time.

Data is correct for Lancet 2, that is no longer in production. Lancet 3 has 5kg warhead and can operate for 1 hour, electronics were also modified, but there is no precise data on that. 3rd model has two subvariants, first 'classic' variant still requires catapult for a launch, 2nd variant has a launch tube and folding wings.
yes, and it works in tandem or swarm mode which means one Orlan can control 2 or more drones to hit different targets at the same time.
but this is not as dangerous as the Chinese chopper drones which Russia will soon get, which have two to more ATGM on it and can loiter just like a small attack helicopter but at smaller sizes.
The lunch tube one is very new and currently experimental
We discussed in Russian chat rooms two years ago that a copter drone with a pair of ATGMs could be very effective. It is enough to take off ten meters or go to some convenient position for launching. It's strange that no one thought of this before.

Electrical engineer here. This is a clever design to break up a nearly impossible problem in to subproblems which are rather easy to solve. The main drone has a motherboard on deck that makes split second trajectory calculations, and long range signal processes to rally a kamikaze to it. Once the kamikaze is in range, it downloads the trajectory and initiates final descent.
I don't really believe the Orleon is needed for Lancet operation. Orleon is a Gas powered and reusable drone and can stay way longer in Air so it makes sense to use it to select targets and then only launch Lancets, when Targets are found.

The LANCET is an independent kamikaze drone and it has no attachment to the Orlan-10. They mostly fly with ZALA AERO scout drones.
As anything military should be. Not with a lot of unnecessary bells and whistles, but cheap and reliable.
Orlan drone is not a Zala Aero product and it is not used as a spotter/designator drone for Lancets, they have their own spoters... Orlan is made in st.petersburg and it is used in combination with other weapons systems such as Krasnopol, Gmlrs, Umpk Fabs, etc...
Yes, orlan was partner for krasnopol and some heavy system, the lancet have his own partner called zala 412-16 .
The thing is that when you hear 20000-40000$ price - it is an export price for the outside buyers. Inside prices in contracts for the government might be way cheaper
No doubt.
The main thing is that the Lancet is made of our materials
there are chips (microcontrollers) MCST - 300nm - made in Samara or Zelenograd (the processor in it is probably not needed and yes, it is harmful)
A video camera (optics) and a matrix - Lomo (Russia)

Ukraine lost 33% of its artillery, making Lancet the BEST counter artillery system. Even during WW2, Soviets lost 3-4% of their artillery to Germans. Not to mention it's cost effectiveness. It's bloody effective!
It goes even so far. The moment an ukrainian artilley group gets to know about that Russians deploy a lancet unit close to them. They immediately stop shooting and leave the area. Interesting animation 👌 Regarding the engineering: first of all the wings are definitely not 90° angeled as seen in 1:17 after having a quick visual comparison my googling Lancet 3 myself. Its acutally almost star wars X-wing shaped graning it a lot of wing surface to keep those 12kg in the air. The brushless motor is way smaller it does not have that ridiculously oversized machinery inside the airframe seen in 2:45. On its place there probably are battery cells to act as counterweight for the shaped charge warhead.

Making these animations requires artistic gift
Next model on the go. Big constructive changes, redesigned launch system (optimised to mass start, and much faser unfolding speed) this must increase effectiveness against AA point defence targets.
It's one thing to talk about it, its another thing to watch countless videos of Lancets destroying Ukraine and NATO weapons systems.
To be noted, the lancet can and is often guided by visual from the operator. If a field unit has general coordinates then the lancet crew can fly. The orlan drone is often used by a completely separate crew, offering surveillance and target designation.

The price you mention is quite overestimated. My colleagues and I calculated the costs of the material that was identified in the Lancet. Engine 370USD identified by wreckage - Czech engine. The material for making the kite is laminate and acrylic resin. batteries for a flight time of 40 minutes, servomotors and control system commercial products from the model series. the warhead is a HEAT demolition charge costing a few tens of dollars. Warhead is NOT KZ-6, and it's simple to check. The weight of Lancet 3 warhead is listed as 12 kilos, KZ-6 total weight is 3 kilos, and 4.8 kilos with a weighted charge. It is more likely that Lancet 3 warhead is EFP and not HEAT due to successful strikes when detonation occurs as far as 5 meters away from the target. 12 kilos would be the correct weight for a beefy EFP warhead that can take out any modern armor regardless of ERA.

i wonder if you're going to make videos about the harop/harpy drones anytime.
If anyone wants to use your videos with credit for learning purposes what would be the legal way to do that?
Nice video! I believe that the main problem was the small and light war head, that's why they make it bigger and heavier always in proportion with the distance capabilities! What i noticed in various videos as i remember, is that lancet drones can attack in the motor area behind the tank, where is more vulnerable! So maybe there is a possibility of controlling the attack in the angle and place they prefer, at least in the final moments so its not fire and forget as an Orlans projectile but much more controlled by a human! What is your opinion?
Lancet is controlled by human and control signal is retranslated via Orlan. Few weeks ago there was an Interview with creator of lancet. He claimed that "self-guidance" is a relatively new feature of this drone which is now under testing.
.
You seem to have the warhead flipped by 180 degrees. Open end of cone needs to be towards target.
Does the propeller start spinning AFTER it leaves the catapult or before?
I believe it's after.
None of domestic production of the Russian MIC has US-level of markup, the companies are largely owned by the state and are only expected to make profit on their export variants. Kinzhal does not cost 10 million to produce and therefore it is not billed that high when "sold" to the Russian state. If you're planning on having a global power scale military, you are much better off structuring it like the Russians and the Chinese. With the US model you only get a vicious feedback loop of the MIC bribing politicians to rubber stamp ridiculous profit margins on ever dumber boondoggles.
Although everything about Lancet is secret it wouldn't be hard to find info about its weird wing configuration and explain it in your otherwise great presentation.
