This strait is known as the Babel-Mandeb, meaning "the Gate of Tears."
Cargo ships must navigate through this passage to reach the Suez Canal, a crucial waterway
The Suez Canal serves as a significant maritime chokepoint, highlighting its pivotal role in international commerce and navigation.
Ships from around the world traverse this strategic route, but the Houthi Militants have exploited this water way to attack shipping vessels.
Now, let’s examine different scenarios of how they execute these attacks.
Scenario 1:
If a ship is within 80 kilometers or 40 miles from land which is the desired range ,there is a possibility of the missile they would use to attack ships.
A Soviet-era P-21 with Solid Booster and liquid Fuel Anti-Ship Missile, produced during the Cold War, is employed for the attacking mission.
When launched, the first-stage booster fires off for 2 to 3 seconds, after which the second stage takes off.
It searches for a target using radar; when locked and ready, it can destroy a ship using a hollow shape charge warhead.
This has the potential to either destroy or sink a cargo ship if it hits at the right angle.
Scenario 2:
This scenario involves the use of a Soviet-era missile that was re-engineered by the Iranians, converting it into an anti-ship missile.
The converted SA-2 missile can be launched from within 45 kilometers or 28 miles from the target.
Take, for example, the US destroyer sailing through the Red Sea.
The Houthi forces fired three anti-ship ballistic missiles capable of traveling at a speed of Mach 3.5, along with two land attack cruise missiles in the Southern Red Sea over a 10-hour period that commenced at approximately 6:30 in the morning on December 26.
These actions create a psychological impact and disrupt trade routes.
Fortunately, the US destroyer's defense system kicks in and successfully destroys the incoming threats. As a result, there was no damage to ships in the area, and no injuries were reported.

I saw Chinese military experts analyzing that its terminal guidance is not active radar guidance, but most likely laser guidance. The reason is that when the terminal is located in a low-altitude, high-air-density environment and flies at a speed greater than mach5, it will produce ionization blackout, which will render the radar ineffective. The terminal speed of ballistic missiles will basically reach Mach 5 or above, which is why most ballistic missiles can only be used to attack fixed targets.

The "ionization blackout" scenario is not impossible to overcome. The Americans managed to do so over 60 years ago with the Sprint ABM (Mach 10+). It was able to receive radio command guidance during its flight.

Don't forget with the fact that the Red Sea Blockade is implemented by Yemen to force Israel quit it's genocide activity in Gaza. Hence they are only target ship that owned or bound to Israel but now since US and UK prefer to stop losing cargo by attacking Yemen than to save Palestinian lives, the fighters in Yemen now also targeting US and UK ships too.

To the people crying in the comments about this. Let me just get something clear. There have been over 150 TARGETED strikes against US and Coalition forces, of which 115 of them have been carried out since October of 2023. Commercial shipping with 0 affiliation to the Israel-Hamas conflict has been constantly harassed and even targeted by Houthi strikes. There have been multiple cases of US naval assets being attacked unprovoked and having to shoot down dozens of missiles and drones (i.e USS Carney DDG64), there have been previous strikes against the Houthis after insurgents attacked an American base in Erbil, Iraq to enforce the fact their warnings weren't to be taken lightly, of which there have been countless warnings that have all been ignored by the Houthi's with continued strikes against US and Coalition forces. It is absolutely within the Coalitions right to retaliate and unlike Israel, the US and UK have been using precision guided munitions to target ONLY radar installations, missile launch stations and weapon storage facilities (places of war that can be used to hurt people) with 0 civilian casualties. The fact that there have been this many attacks against Coalition forces without them retaliating is astounding and very long overdue.

The amount of fire power that would be leveled at the incoming missiles would be devastating. The enemy would have to launch HUNDREDS of LARGE caliber missiles (which they dont have) to do any damage. Those small munitions would maybe make decent hole that would be immediately sealed and repaired. Then the enemy gets to play battle ship with the US Navy. Now its OUR turn to throw some stuff at ya.. and I can tell you, they aren't ready.
True, US CSG's consist of 4 arleigh Burk class destroyers and one cruiser, both carry around 104-120 missiles(BGM-109, SM-6, SM-2 , SM-3, ESSM and rim not talking about the extensive network of CIWS) Basically even if one destroy is SAM dedicated, you will need to launch at least 100 missiles to penetrate a destroyer defence.

What might be needed is a anti drone system that can be mounted on a shipping container and moved by a helicopter so that as a ship moves in range the anti-drone shipping container is placed on that ship via helicopter and then is removed and placed on another ship (coming the other direction) once the ship carrying that anti-drone shipping container leaves harm's way.
One might call this Aerial Transportable Overhead Protection (ATOP) and the process Rent ATOP (a play on rent a cop).
I'm pretty sure that the USN are taking out drones with Combat Air Patrols, and if they get close enough, Phalanx gatling guns, and mini guns.
It's interesting but the problem is mainly linked to the cost of anti-drone missiles, oversaturation can guarantee the loss of a ship

A bit of context for those who repeat the "but the Houthis are not Yemen" line.
The Houthis coup in 2014 involved all of the Yemeni army that sided with them, except for the Republican Guard and 1st Armored Brigade who were under the control of their rivals of Al-Ahmar clan.
All these heavy equipment you see are not Iranian, rather Yemeni army armament. Iran just helps developing them a bit further with guidance kits.
So, the Houthis don't represent all of Yemenis for sure, and they took over the government by force, but the same applies to every dictator in the Middle East. This whole point is useless to mention and used for propaganda.

I might be wrong here, but I guess the intention is not to destroy a ship or even disable it. The Houthis just want to annoy the ships and create fear in the companies that navigate through the region.
