Pretty sure any professional designer who utilizes the iPad Pro would have been happier with a 2x battery life and same form factor as last gen.
Not so sure, as it would mean more bulky but also heavier. You can always carry a power pack with you if needed, but at least that’s optional.

The real pros who take it onsite might appreciate the size and weight. And everyone can use a power bank anyway. Of course, there’s still a whole category of people who will want pro, sturdy and long lasting vs thin…

@@divyanshbhutra5071Wacom price is the same as an iPad Pro (for a quality one anyway) but then you lose the mobility and versatility. Personally, I almost exclusively use my iPad for Procreate. I’d love more battery life and I honestly don’t care how thick or heavy it is.
Or we're just still happy with our 2017 iPad Pro 10.5" that still is THE workhorse to have in your hands.
The only thing on my wish list is what Marques mentioned: flipping the Pencil to get an eraser function.
I definitely think the nano texture is for digital artists and that’s why it was added to the higher storage models!! I love to draw and digital plan on my iPad, so the texture would be nice, but not at the expense of buying a higher spec’d model! I’ll just stick to my 20 dollar textured screen protector instead!! 🤣🤣
Yes, a textured screen protector like the Rock Paper Pencil can work very well and has the advantage of being removable for those times when you want to see the full capability of the display.
The fact that even Marques knows that the Magic Keyboard is “ungodly expensive” warms my heart 🙏🏾

I will be upgrading to the new iPad Pro 13 from a 2nd generation iPad Pro 12.9. The 12.9 has developed an issue where touch randomly stops working and the battery drains rather quickly. The 12.9 was an upgrade from the original iPad, which means I am getting 7 years between upgrades. Hopefully, this new super thin iPad Pro will survive 7 years.
Thank you for an honest review, the pencil incompatibility it’s absolute garbage. Not spending $1000+ for a new iPad to replace my perfectly fine m2, but could’ve spent $150 in the new pencil with no problem. Greedy hits them back because im sure there’s a lot of people like me

I never thought of the camera bump but the bigger battery would have been a very welcome update. My M1 iPad have never really had that good of a battery and now it's pretty horrible. I have not seen a single person say "man these iPads are so thick, I need them thinner".
I’m rocking my 13 inch iPad Pro from 2018. Works flawlessly. If I have to upgrade at some time, I’ll buy a used m2 pro in 13 inch. They go for around $700.

I'm getting an iPad Pro 13 but with the normal screen and just putting a matte protector on it. Since I'm upgrading from a 4th gen, I'll probably notice a huge difference in display and power, plus I believe it has more RAM, which is always helpful.

As an artist, the pencil improvements were the highlight for me.
What I REALLY REALLY REALLY want is for Apple to make the pencil compatible with the iPhone. Then I can carry a pencil with me and doodle on my iPhone while I'm out and about. And then cloud transfer my sketches to the iPad to polish up

Same here, I'd love that feature. It's why I have a high end Samsung phone with S-Pen, for the pen option. I like the bigger iPad screen, more comfortable to draw but it would be awesome if it also works on iPhone.

When you realize they changed all the sizes from 12.9 inch to 13 inch or 10.9 to 11inch to "be more clean" when in reality you old magic keyboards are now obsolete and you need to buy some more

Go look at a side view of the last 4 iPhones. They do things like moving the lock button ever so slightly so the cases are incompatible

The wife bought me an iPad for Christmas about 11 years ago. I absolutely loved it. My daughter also absolutely loved it. We all have iPhones and MacBooks and we've never bought an iPad since. Every time a new one is launched, I say to myself, 'that looks amazing. I'd love to have one....but do I actually need one?'

I still have my 2018 iPad Pro and it still does it’s job greatly! Consuming content, editing photos on Lightroom, it’s amazing. Battery is still pretty good and I use it almost daily

Best update imo is that the base iPad now starts at 349 instead of the ridiculous 449. That’s what is going to benefit most people.
Hell yeah, to me this was the actual most interesting bit of this presentation.
349$ is really competitive and already does 90% of what most people use their iPad for, while not being as outdated in design and specs than the previous 9th gen. I would have gone for this one instead of the Air m1 at the time of the screen was similar.

I'm still using my iPad Pro 3rd gen with the a12x Bionic chip I bought new like 6 or 7 years ago. I'm still getting all the updates and it runs just as well as the day I got it with zero lag or stuttering doing anything. Hoping I can get another 5 years out of it.
The reason I love mkbhd vids is because 1. He sums up an hours event into a 10 minute video, and 2. He cuts through all the ads, claims, etc. of companies, and explains the real, practical impact of the upgrade....usually incremental. Thanks Marques

I’m still using an iPad Air 2 from 2014, it still works perfectly fine for watching videos and listening to music. It is still great for taking notes too. It even works for CAD software like onshape and fusion 360 (fusion 360 only lets you view files). It does absolutely everything I need it to, so there is no reason for me to upgrade it. New iPads won’t let me do anything more, mainly because the OS is the biggest limitation of iPads.

The power is there, but it’s still held back by in many little ways that make it a pain to use it as a laptop replacement.

There’s missing of ultra wide angle camera on the back. As an interior designer, ultra wide angle camera is a must have feature. We need that to capture interior space, and it’s great for direct annotation on it.

Their new iPhone app, due after WWDC, will rectify that. Apparently, anything taken on your iPhone will be available on the iPad for editing and rendering in real-time.
Completely agreed. This is the problem with reviewers only seeing the iPad by the lenses they insist on. They are trying to figure out how to make it a MacBook rather than seeing how people who have actually made this device useful in their lives are using it. I’m an Architect and use the Ultra wide angle all the time to capture construction progress and sketch out iterations on site. I now have to capture such moments via my phone, which isn’t an iPhone btw, then transfer and sketch. That camera wasn’t there for document scanning or general photography. I served a practical use in apps like morpholio.
To me, the big thing is that it seems they managed to make those ipads vastly more energy efficient. So the point of the M4 is exactly that, like Marques indicated in between. I think this is a big thing but none that would or should trigger a buy of course. In the PC world things go in the wildly wrong direction with every generation of graphics card being vastly more wasteful than the previous one. It is great to see that at least in some mobile application we see that it doesn't have to be that way. Yes I know, the performance of an 4090 isn't possible today without drowning it in electricity but the thing is that this peak performance is pushed way beyond diminishing returns.

My 2017 iPad still does its job. Watching, browsing, foto editing and document editing. Battery is becoming an issue but a power bank helps.

How are you not experiencing any slowdowns, hiccups? I was also using iPad 5th Gen until last year and the SoC was starting to show it’s age.
I use mine too, it is still very useful it only bugs with presentations etc, but if you don't need to rush, it a complete machine
the only reason I'm upgrading my 2018 is because I was broke when I bought it so it only has 64gb and I now work with large raw files in bulk 🫠

I love the new era od Marques not being impressed with boring half-baked products, the fact that he won't sugarcoat these products should be the bare minimum we expect of review videos, but I can't wrap my head around some people being angry that he is actually reviewing these products. Like, I showed someone his youtube channel and the person said "but he's paid by these companies to review these products, right? There is no way that he reviews these products, gives honest feedback, and only makes money through ad sense and brand deals, right?" Like, no, he literally gets crap from viewers for actually criticising what deserves criticism cuz he is authentic

As several people have already said, they need to find a way to merge MacOS and iPadOS so this becomes the de facto portable Mac with touch screens instead of messing about with the laptop range over a decade after many other manufacturers did that.

After two years of trying to make the original iPad Pro M1 work just sold it this year. I got MacBook Air. Everything is suddenly 1000% more functional.
The iPad is a fantastic tablet but other than artists I don’t understand why Apple wants it be so powerful.

That just means you bought the wrong kind of machine for your work. If you actually were trying to do things that needed a tablet, then when you switched to the MacBook, everything would have become 1000% less functional. Don't blame the iPad for that.

So great review, but am missing news about solving the side channel vulnerability. Also clear that buying a new one requires you to buy all new accessories as the old ones are incompatible. Conclusion: stick to what I have and don’t buy new one.
No Marques, it's not a complete spec bump, there is also spec loss. They removed the second camera (probably because of thickness), which could be used for creating spacial videos for Vision Pro. It's actually the first time they removed a feature from an iPad.

I don't think you wanna record video on a 11 or 13 inch tablet in the first place but sure, they could've kept it. At the same time they got data how these devices are used so I'm sure most of the time, "taken out" features are not actually that missed by the majority.

But my main point was a feedback for Marques not identifying/mentioning the removal of the second camera.
It is a spec loss and should be brought up for viewers to better make base their decisions.

Nanotexture is basically a 10 backs matte acreen protector on top (which i btw recommend for all tablets, its great!)

I would also like to add this since you forgot to include it in the video. The 256GB & 512GB variants of the Oled ipads have a 9 core cpu and 8GB of ram, while the higher end 1TB & 2TB variants have a 10 core cpu & 16GB of ram. Just wanna put that out there for those wondering what apple meant when they were saying "up to 10 core cpu" in the presentation yesterday.

@@joshuaisaacallan Indeed. An additional thing to note, is that, that extra core won't make enough of a difference, to warrant shelling out an additional 500-600 dollars to get a 1TB ipad. At most, those who fork over that premium will most probably be getting around 10-12% more multicore performance at most. As for the ram, it should've been at the base, 12GB. Doubling that of the iPhone 15 Pro, which has 6GB of ram.

I think they just use binned chips for the cheaper. Binned chips are ones that have more defects. So instead of throwing them away, they just disable the parts that aren't working@@johannesssssssss

The bump in screen brightness should help (But not overcome) the problem of using the tablets outdoors. I always have to turn facing away from the sun or find a bit of shade to work outdoors.
One thing my new M4 iPad can do that the ones before couldn’t is playback 5k H 264 video!! Runs smooth on this iPad

Hi team! Please test the nano texture in direct sunlight in the review video! I use my iPad outside to control audio consoles remotely and I really need the brightest screen and the least glare. Appreciate the great content!
For the art people:
No the new air doesn't have a 16gb RAM option for procreate layers. You'll still need to go the pro if you want the most layers possible.
M4 Pro up to 512 GB only has 8 GB RAM. Pricey to go for 16 GB.

very strange. Etched glass was a tradeoff with the steam deck that a lot of people had mixed feelings on because it grayed the OLED blacks a little.
They could've done the same thing on the S24 Ultra but no, apple make it worse on the iPad

I totally get what you are saying with the “spec bump”… and that makes complete sense if you have the previous version.. but for me (and probably most people) I have an iPad that’s 6 or so years old and it’s a massive improvement. I feel that is Apple’s bread and butter, The periodical consumer. Not everyone can afford to buy the latest and greatest every time Apple drop a new device.

Honestly, I’ve been wanting to go full iPad for productivity and creative work for years and years. This might actually be the time for me to do it. Get rid of my 14” M3 Max 14c/30c for one of these.
Also it’s great that my Ridge wallet from 2018 is just as good as the day I bought it. Especially after they sent me a new cash strap and some replacement screws since a couple backed out over the years.

I don't know anyone that wanted the iPad Pro to be thinner. Most people have some sort of case on the iPad for protection, to carry it or use it in the field, which is a similar thickness to the device itself. Using the existing chassis or even making it a mm or two thicker to provide greater battery life, more ports, encompass the camera bulge or even more robust overall to negate the need for a case would be much more useful I feel.
They probably just don’t want to give you more and make it look expensive
That's the first thing I thought. I have a pretty chunky case and I don't want a thinner pro, I want a more powerful pro. I like that they make them super powerful because they last longer that way.
I like the approach of a thinner iPad. My Pro is really heavy and bulky with the Magic Keyboard attached to it all the time.
With as powerful as they’re making these processors, they can’t upgrade the battery. It’s the main reason people will need to upgrade these in ~4 years. Everything else is really future proof.
Apple thinks a 8-11 screen on time from battery (depending on use) is good enough. Can’t say I disagree.
Actually the single biggest announcement today was that Final Cut for iPad can edit clips directly off a USB-C drive, rather than having to import them into the stupid siloed app arrangement. This has been the single biggest issue with using these things in an actually productive way. I’d expect further changes in the next iPad OS around this which will FINALLY remove the great, stupid barrier of iPad productivity. Quite surprised Marques didn’t mention this at all.
How many people doing video editing are doing it on their iPads vs. a MacBook Pro or even a MacBook Air though?

I still have my 2018 iPad pro and that has got more power than I ever need.
It's an amazing device, don't get me wrong, but it's so infuriating too because a few rather simple software features (primarily individual foulders or files on the homescreen, but also a denser app layout) would make it just that much better. (There are of course also "bigger" features that I'd love to see, but I'd be more than happy if I got those mentioned above first.

Although i say this because it seems to be apples approach to advertise to artists with iPads as of late. Which we know is not the best mode for creation. That and due to the annoyance of having to carry both my MacBook and Huion tablet in my backpack, the idea of having an iPad as my workhorse sounds nice, but since it's so limited… i ended up selling the one i had. At one point, I used my iPad and sidecar, and it was alright, but there's no incentive for developers to think about iPad screen size for desktop applications UI. So putting it all on one for developers to have this in mind and making my backpack load smaller would be nice
Logically speaking, why would they implement a macOS into the Ipad? Wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of buying a Macbook and the Ipad?

I kind of expected that was the direction they were going to go when they switched it to the M1. It’s even closer now. And it’s the only way I’d be upgrading mine at this point. The M1 otherwise has everything I need, other than a new battery, because I’ve used mine so much I’ve actually managed to tank it. It has like 40-50% of the capacity it had when I bought it.
I’m also curious to see what the longevity of the new tandem OLED screens are. Did Apple manage to solve burn-in? If not, that’s just one more reason to stick with my micro-LED screen.
@@ignatiusloyolamulti1186 why not? microsoft does it with their surface line, I guess you could make the argument that Windows is on every manufacturer's Computers, but still even a bare bones macOS would probably be sufficient.

@TeddyLeppard Honestly I'd say macbooks are strangely reasonably priced at this point, spec-spec comparison they're overpriced; but the longevity / build quality are worth the premium imo. My 2017 macbook air still manages all day battery and is in decent shape, where other companies go out of their way to make their laptops fragile

I bought a used 13" iPad Pro from 2018 a few years ago. Same resolution and refresh rate as the new one! Runs everything I can throw at it like a champ!
I take it you do not run Davinci Resolve or Final Cut.
@@GaryAbbott With iPadOS so locked down those apps are basically useless. I edit videos w/ premiere on a real computer. Any motion tracking, video reencoding, compositing etc cannot be done on an iPad.

I still like my ipad with the A12Z chip...around 2019 it still rocks.
I haven't had a new ipad since the original Mini came out, it's insane how far ipads have come in all these years. I've just never really had any use for one. For me personally, ipad improvements are just a preview of what might be possible for the next iphone. Will be really interesting to see if they try to make those thinner like these ipads, if they will be able to make them strong enough to not bend

@@joelhubeny7554theres no game using mesh shading on mobile, only one recently was the alan wake 2 iirc. Ray tracing will probably be very weak since to properly ray trace you need a fuckton of cores which this doesnt have

Also anyone smart enough to know and be excited about raytracing has had it for 8 years with Nvidia or 5 years with AMD. This product is aimed at only the people foolish enough to stick with Apple software.
I use a 2017 10.5-inch iPad for work (I do illustrations and tattoos) and for home entertainment. Up until the new iPads came out, I hadn’t even thought about replacing it because the battery life is still amazing and the screen is still bright. Basically, it’s been a perfect device for the past seven years. I remember when it first came out, people thought it was overpowered. So, all this to say that its power is probably more about future-proofing for software developments rather than an immediate need.

Wish they’d make an option that doesn’t have the back camera so we don’t have that back bump that will require you to get a case so it’ll sit flat.
Also it’d be great with all this power if they’d let you work your music library like iTunes so I can fix track titles and activate “skip when shuffling” without having to boot up my desktop.

I agree. 😂I had ordered the M4 with the nanotexture glass and didn't think any reviews would come out this rapidly. Cancelled and resent my order with the texture taken off. I would've maybe ruined the screen right out of the box by wiping it down I guess.

I’m sure folks will try that out and see how much force it takes to bend it also, there are always some loons looking to try to break it, but I’m thankful for it in order to know how fragile these things are 😂🤷♂️

I feel like with CPU and SOC technology we are and have been very much at the point of diminishing returns for pretty much everyone. To most people the difference between this iPad and one from 4 years ago is not going to be noticeable. And on computers this has been going on for a while longer. There are 12 year old computers that could serve most people just fine.
Bought the first Pro when it came out, good time to upgrade.. may make sense to any that have bought one in the last few years but massive jump for anyone with an older model like me

Seems pretty obvious, but Mike Hurley pointed it out about half a day earlier. In-fact he suggested they do it exactly this way months ago. (And obviously some engineer years before that thought it up.) Guess it is obvious.
All the thoughtful discussions about why the camera hadn't moved yet were about the inside hardware. It seemed certain that if they somehow put the camera on the side where the pencil connected, there were a lot of changes taking place, hidden from view. But yeah, it's nice that someone pointed it out aloud because other reviewers totally missed it

In this case, putting it on the opposite side doesn't work well because keyboards and stuff cover that side and it would be awkward to tuck stuff in and like... anyone who wants to pay $200 for the new pencil is probably going to want the new screen anyway. Like, yeah, if they really wanted to, they probably could have made it work, but it's relatively reasonable.

Well, remember it needs a very special microfiber cloth to clean the screen or it will ruin it. (and cost $800 to replace). And guess what microfiber is only going to be allowed? The Apple only one, that they will change at minimum $50 for. I also would not be suprised if not using the special Apple only cloth to clean the screen will void your Warranty as well.

When you look at the footage of the new iPad in profile (eg 10:17), it appears warped. For example, it doesn’t lie flat on the table in the demo room when Marques is doodling.

M2 iPad Pro owner here: literally no one needs any of these upgrades aside from the efficiency bonus. Apple keeps playing the specs game but the OS makes the upgrades worthless.
Same with m1. The mini led is still nice. Oled is better but I don’t think that much better. It is great on the phone. But going to the iPad Pro m1 12.9 it is not that much different. It is super bright and it looks great.

longevity? The M1 pro and air will have similar longevity. Battery degradation will probably kill them before anything else... and don't tell me you can have battery replaced by Apple because they go out of their way to refuse the service (I talk by experience, my 2017 pro has less than 3 hours battery life and they say it's still 87% and no amount of money will convince them to do a battery service, and it will be obsolete this year with no more battery service allowed)
The previous pencil was very accurate and great for drawing. Every artist I talked to wanted the eraser option, but no one wanted any of the new features they developed.
