The greatest band in America & I was lucky enough to know Duane & Gregg when they practiced in Mama A's back yard & ally .What an amazing thing to see..They had the chops at 16 & 17 years old..I wasn't the only one hanging out in the ally ..When they played, all the neighborhood kids would sit in there yard & listen..🍑🍑 And i got storys ill never tell..LOL..RIP Brothers

I will never forget when this aired in '73 on Don Kirshners Rock Concert tv show. I had a little 3' reel to reel and set up a mic to the tv speaker to record the whole Saturday Night in Macon special . It featured Wet Willie outdoors, Then moved into the theatre for Marshall Tucker Band - who did a ripping version of 'Ramblin on my Mind' and finally the Allmans who were really spot on and super tight this night . I then transferred the recording onto cassette once I made that leap and it has been a treasured tape ever since. ABB was slowly emerging from the fog of Duane and Berry's passing. Fortunately bringing in Lamar and Chuck helped immensely.

@@sgg6927 Yeah, as I've heard he took it upon himself to really work on it and get good as a tribute to Duane. I'd have to say he succeeded in spades! I saw Duane, him and others play a glass slide on the second finger and that's how I've always played. It makes it easy to play chords too, you've got Chuck Berry rhythms there no problem plus most everything else.

I think that this band was THE miracle BAND in what they could produce as well as all their side antics. I mean anyone that plays must be astounded at the precision of the music, the two part lead guitar harmonies , and the whole thing that gave them their unrepeatable driving sound, topped off with this ultra phenomenal blues voice coming out of a white guy. Gregg Allman was born with an incredible head of blonde hair making the overall package that the girls would just faint over while the guys mouths would drop with the soaring ear splitting rock and roll blues. Those days appear to be mostly gone but hopefully they will be back in different configuration. No one should even attempt to copy this. It came to us and then left - leaving great memories of a better time for the world and for music.

@@greenman7612 Yes, that excellent '72 show is rare in that it featured the 'five man band', from right after Duane died, but before Chuck Leavell joined the group. It contains a mind-blowing early live rendition of 'Les Brers In A Minor' from side one of the brand new Eat A Peach LP. Leavell was a great addition, but he really changed the direction of the band's sound, starting with his first ABB album, Brothers and Sisters, released in 1973.

Interesting, this is 1973 and Betts is playing at that time a newer Les Paul Deluxe guitar with the smaller humbuckers. With his arsenal of vintage guitars at his disposal, it's nice to see Betts playing a newer guitar instead of an old one and he sounds great. It goes to show, the myth about old guitars sounding the best is only a myth. Someone like Betts could pick up new guitar straight off the assembly line at Gibson today and make it sound like a 1957-1960 Holy Grail Les Paul.

You've never heard of Chuck Leavell ? What kind of ABB fan are you ? He was the replacement for Duane. They decided that another guitar player was pointless and went with Chuck.

The live album, check the oil wipe the windows whatever it’s called is of their 1973 tour and it’s absolutely fantastic start to finish highly underrated. I like it better than Fillmore East, and they do a version of Elizabeth Reed that is just off the charts.

Live Ramblin’ Man on Wipe the Windows I think is better than the studio version on Brothers and Sisters. Betts kills it!

@ no doubt,Betts killed it on that… the whole album is solid. It’s more energetic and fresher sounding than Fillmore east …like Betts had been freed from constraints that maybe Duane put on him

Is Greg playing that aluminum body guitar that Grand Funk used to use?… you don’t see them very often… but I believe that’s a aluminum body and net guitar

correct, Mark Farner of GFR and Pete Haycock of Climax Blues Band are the only other people I've ever seen with them. They're junk.

Saw them the same year in Hartford, CT. Honestly, not a great show. They were just going through the motions. Dicky threw a hissy fit and walked off stage. Between Duane's death, the heroin and infighting, not a good time for the band. They did not play "Blue Sky" which is what I was waiting for, probably because Duane was not there for the trade off solo. Still love the band regardless.
