I love that. Robin Williams of the guitar. I cannot count how many times I have zero'd in on his playing and eded up laughing!! Somewhere between comedy and advanced physics. Greg is one of a kind, and certainly one of the most unique guitar voices we have.

My Greg story: Heard him with his full band at the Frankfurt music fair in Germany years ago. They played some very sentimental intermission while Greg was talking to the audience about a very sad story. A friend that got really sick and unfortunately passed away, if i remember correctly. Everybody was in the mood to start bawling when he announced the following song in memory of him. Then they started to play the most hilarious, up tempo funny piece you could imagine. Like Greg does. I'll never forget this.
A guitar player so good, there are no words. Saw him a few times in very small bars. Stupid good. His son plays drums and is crazy good as well. Awesome to see him here. And well deserved.
Dear Rick. This project of yours deserves its own room in a Library of Congress or The Smithsonian. The breadth, the depth of knowledge, the variety of artists - mind blowing. He does his own thing, and he does it well. We need people like Greg. Not just Jimi and Eric. One thing I noticed in this video, his playing is so clean, I mean it is dead nuts perfect to my ears. No buzzing strings, no extra strings ringing out. Being a guitarist myself I can totally appreciate how difficult this clean of playing is. Then there's those crazy pre-bends he does. @@AnomalousAstro Your onto something there. Humor and happiness seem to inform almost every not he plays. However, when he gets deep, it is staggering how good he is.
Your comments remind me a bit of my reaction to Rick's Matteo Mancuso interview. Greg and Matteo may be very different in physique and demeanor, but it's clear they are both musical omnivores and can't help but spread their passion for their craft.
I know that most, if not all your subscribers enjoyed this interview Rick. But for those of us that made the annual Summerfest in Milwaukee, this has special meaning. No matter who the "Big Names" were playing during those 11 days of Beer, Food and Music, I always had to select the days to attend when Greg was playing on one of the smaller stages. That was pretty easy to do since sometimes he would play numerous days during the 'fest and sometimes more than on time per day! I'm 65 years old now and can appreciate him even more than my younger days. What a genius.
I found out my 18 year old Son also watches this Channel! Im 60 and been watching off/on for quite a while. He likes your reviews of modern music, and even more.
Great experiences: Being in a Guitar Center and engaging a 20-something in conversation, mentioning Rick's channel and it's an instant bond across generations. And I'm a >decade older than you are. In a world defaulting to insanity, music and the grace of muscians, is a life saver. All so beautifully documented, by Mr. Beato.
Glad he mentioned Blues Saraceno. He mostly produces these days but he is a phenomenal, often forgotten guitar player from the early 90s that alot of the great players hold in high regard.
I saw Blues Saraceno in 1990 with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA. He was awesome, but then, there was Jack and Ginger! Great show that I will never forget. Jack Bruce shook my hand as he walked in the front door.
I’m getting a kick out of the people who’ve been introduced to Greg through this video. A video that truly lives up to its name. And, yes, Greg is always at least this energetic and funny.
I opened for Greg Koch at Daryl's House 2 months ago - My entire band and I were MESMERIZED - his chops are out of this world!! We just stood there in awe for like 2 hours
Great interview Rick. I met the Gristle King at Tosa fest in Wisconsin. Huge Jeff Beck fan he is. I was wearing a Jeff Beck T shirt at the fest. All my hero's rolled into one ham hock. Beck, Page, Gatton . But he mastered their hero's too. Greg has a Beck's vid on you tube. Miss Jeff so much. Glad I actually met Greg and his kick ass son . Like Bonham with a thousand arms. He hits everything, lol
I saw Greg last year here in Florida (I think it was last year). Great gig! There is no other musician who is as free as Greg. His playing is a direct expression of his personality. He has reached the ultimate goal of an artist who wants to fully express himself with his medium. Other guitarists have a style, but Greg's playing is his personality on full display with nothing lost in the translation.
Been in awe of Greg for years but seeing this interview shows why he's such a great player: constant study/practice and being an extremely quick-witted guy. Others may grouse about his humor but that is who he is and he keeps the fun rolling in interviews and demos. Go Greg!
25:18 "So I got a book, 'Slide Guitar' by Arlen Roth - I told Arlen this, 'Arlen, I learned slide from you.' He's like, 'Yeah, you and everybody else.' I'm like, 'Okay, love you.' Don't get me wrong. That book is fantastic." I enjoyed hearing this, because Arlen was my college roommate, and I bought a Gristlemaster right after hearing Greg play one at the NAMM show a few years ago. At a different venue, Greg was kind enough to sign it for me, so it's a now genuine signature model.
This is my friend Dylan (his drummer's) father. I once played his rig and it was astronomical. Whenever they play around he always gets me guest list, and it's superb every time. Hats off greg and dylan.
Welcome to the thousands who are absolutely blown by his playing. Like utubehound69 said, He is a MONSTER player. One of the biggest most scary Monster players, yet his music has SO MUCH humor in it.
I had the privilege of seeing Greg play in a clinic setting in 2007, it just blew my mind. He's a fantastic guitarist and human being warm, funny and generous. Excellent interview!
I discovered Greg years ago when I thought I was ready for a new axe. Stumbled onto the Wildwood site and his demos. I quickly burned all my cheap guitars and realized I am never going to be called a "guitar player"! I watch, laugh and appreciate just how great he is as a player, entertainer and genuinely solid dude!
Greg is an absolute hoot/warped genius! Hung out with him at a Guitar Center in Clearwater, FL back in 2016. He's one of the best ever on guitar! Great job having him Rick!
I met Gristleman back in 2000 at Fender’s NAMM booth and since then seen him live a couple of times. During meet n greet I always thank him for how he always makes me a better player. His character and integrity are so special to my life Great family man and so much fun to hang with. I’m amazed just how much he has influenced my guitar skills and he makes me laugh so much
Man, you are in for some mind explosions. No one plays like that man. PLUS he is constantly cracking jokes. He was actually mild with Rick! He can get way over the top and have you laughing one minute then thinking "God! How is that possible!" He is one of the best guitarists we have.
So thrilled to watch this. I used to work at a studio in Milwaukee and Greg would come in to record. Non-stop laughter and joy while he was there. Enjoy seeing him play in town. So glad he’s getting more recognition. He’s so fun to watch play. Especially when he combines facial expressions with notes and somewhat mocks who he’s imitating. Love him.
Greg Koch has inherited the title of ‘Greatest Unknown Guitar Player’ from Danny Gatton. He is also a VERY GOOD teacher. I used to devour his tutorials on DVD. Tons of great, inspiring stuff and his humor and energy keep his instruction from becoming dry and dull. As you can see on this video, he has an encyclopedic knowledge of different guitar players’ individual styles and techniques. Hopefully he’ll develop a bigger fan base from Rick’s interview. He certainly deserves it.
Greg is amazing. So glad you got to interview him. His playing style is so killer and he’s super down to earth. I reached out to him about a guitar and he kindly responded to my question. He played my new LP Axcess.
Thank you Rick because I didn't know Greg Koch ! Can't wait to dig into his work, what a great guy. Yes, surely talented but he devoured every book and stills play everyday since he wakes up; his teen passion is intact.
In the UK we designate certain folks a "National Treasure" You had a fantastic interview with Rick Wakeman recently and he probably qualifies as one of our national treasures even with people who have never heard of Yes or Prog Rock. I would definitely put Greg Koch forward as one of the USA's national treasures even if he didn't play guitar amazingly - top marks mate!
I would absolutely agree with you, He needs to be better known, as he is one of the great guitarists on the planet as well as one of the most unique. You cannot watch and hear him play for more than a minute without smiling or laughing out loud.
Was not familiar with Greg, I think he is less known in Europe. But I loved every second of it! Super interesting. I would also love to see Eric Gales one day!
Just amazing!. Greg is where Im from . He worked at a music store that had 6 great guitar players. All killers of different styles. One day I was talking to one of them and he goes "ever see Greg play"? I was like "who's that". And he pointed to a guy in the store. So I went to see him a few weeks later in a local bar. Just to see the guy ascend to his current status is pretty cool. This guy has an endless well of musical chops.
Had the pleasure of meeting Greg before a show. What you see is what you get. A phenomenal down to earth guitar picker and great guy that harbors a plethora of Gristle tricks :)
Having seen Greg live once I have been a fan of his ever since. He’s an amazing guitarist in incredible human being and integrates his full personality within his playing and I love it.
I basically watch every video Rick is doing. Some stand out, depending on the artist he's interviewing. This one stands out like a lighthouse by any means. Greg fills every room with his sheer presence like no one else. What an extraordinary human being he is.
I met him at a demo he did in a very small music shop almost 20 years ago. chick'n pickin madness. he was quite humble then too. I remember him demoing all these zoo animal sounds with a pretty basic setup/all technique
I had the pleasure of meeting Greg and introducing him to our guests when he was a clinician for Fender. Our music store was so lucky to have him play for us. His knowledge, massive chops and humor were on full display for us that night. I’ve been a huge fan ever since!!
I recall seeing Greg in Melbourne Australia one very hot January in 2002 ish. It was 115F inside the venue, and he sizzled for an 90 minutes or more. And Greg was gracious enough to say hello in person at the tail of the show during bumpout. Larger than life on all fronts. Great interview, Rick.
Around 2004 when I was 18 I really got into SRV, he’s still my guitar hero. I bought a Greg Koch instructional dvd on SRV. I knew he was the man as soon as he started playing. He’s so good and articulate that it almost takes the magic out of it.
I was at a street fair in Wauwatosa, Wi...probably 15 years ago ('tossa Days). I heard this blistering version of Jeff Beck's "Beck's Bolero" coming from somewhere up the street. Bingo!! The incredible Greg Koch was "laying the smack down" on the audience. Greg is an absolute maestro.
I only became aware maybe 7 years ago, and that is a shame, as he is an absolute monster player. What sets him apart, besides his ability to play basically anything, is the humor he brings to his playing. Everytime i catch him doing a Wildwood guitar demo or catch on his live shows recorded on UA-cam, I am smiling ear to ear.
I've been really trying for the last 25 or so years to get ONE really great tone. Greg on this one video had a couple hundred and he doesn't have a problem helping you to get it too. I'm gonna use this as a practic video and try some new techniques
Absolutely fabulous! Greg is one of my most favorite humans on the planet. I've had the pleasure of seeing him live many times over the years. A totally unique talent and I love what he does.
At first I thought this was a green screen with two separate viewpoints combined. Makes Rick look smallish! You can't get a feel for his size unless you see him next to a "normal" size person. And what a sense of humor. Great interview.
Only a week or so ago I was thinking Rick needs to get Greg Koch in. The dudes such a monster and has influenced my playing in the last few years. His chordal work is insane. Thank you Rick - Greg deserves all the accolades and sits among the best players. Super intelligent and very very witty.

When your hands are that big, i don’t think anything on guitar is off limits lol
Your comments remind me a bit of my reaction to Rick's Matteo Mancuso interview. Greg and Matteo may be very different in physique and demeanor, but it's clear they are both musical omnivores and can't help but spread their passion for their craft.
It’s good to hear mentions of Gatton and Buchanan, two DC treasures who are missed.
The police murdered ROY.
Greg is an encyclopedia of guitar. Breathtaking and funny.
I’m 64, and ditto to dat.
💯
Saraceno's Light Shade of Plaid changed my view of guitar forever. Middletown CT's musical hero!
The Wizard of Wauwatosa! Been following him since Greg Koch & The Tone Controls playing parties in peoples basements in West Allis and Milwaukee.
Me too!
@davidkeeley8473 He plays at the TosaFest summer festival in Wauwatosa.
I know he plays Summerfest.
I’m getting a kick out of the people who’ve been introduced to Greg through this video. A video that truly lives up to its name. And, yes, Greg is always at least this energetic and funny.
Brilliant, you cant help smile when you hear Greg play, thank you Rick & Greg......
I opened for Greg Koch at Daryl's House 2 months ago - My entire band and I were MESMERIZED - his chops are out of this world!! We just stood there in awe for like 2 hours
You are no slouch either lol. Awesome you got to hear him up close and personal.
Speaking to the amount of time he’s put into his craft is really the essence of learning any instrument. So good!
That book is fantastic."
I enjoyed hearing this, because Arlen was my college roommate, and I bought a Gristlemaster right after hearing Greg play one at the NAMM show a few years ago. At a different venue, Greg was kind enough to sign it for me, so it's a now genuine signature model.
And Mick Taylor ( who Greg mentions as his slide inspiration ) is one of Arlens slide guitar heros . I have the video where Arlen has him as a guest
This is my friend Dylan (his drummer's) father. I once played his rig and it was astronomical. Whenever they play around he always gets me guest list, and it's superb every time. Hats off greg and dylan.
Dylan is a beast on the drums
When Greg plays…I hear joy and fun.
OMG this guy is amazing.
That is so true. Another commenter said something like "humor is the gateway to his genius"
Rick, it’s much appreciated you interviewing Greg Koch. He is a wild man on guitar. I love how he is so adept at mixing things up.
Wow. I must live a sheltered life. I've never heard of this dude but I'm already a huge fan! Pure talent runs through his veins.
he's a monster player
He’s done a ton of promos for a variety of well-known guitar stores
J .D SIMO ON A LES PAUL NOW THATS WHAT ROCKS
Welcome to the thousands who are absolutely blown by his playing. Like utubehound69 said, He is a MONSTER player. One of the biggest most scary Monster players, yet his music has SO MUCH humor in it.
See him live and you’ll wonder why he isn’t mentioned with Beck, Hendrix, Fripp et al. He’s amazing.
Hands down the best channel on youtube
Absolutely…
Agreed 👍🏼
Especially music channels. Rick is turning into the documentarian of 20th century music and beyond.
And it's not close.
Greg is an awesome Milwaukee Music legend. As a fellow former Milwaukeean, River West, East Side, Endris Park, West Allis. He makes common sese to us.
Great time. I love that guy and his playing. Watch Wildwood like it’s must see TV…🎉
His character and integrity are so special to my life
Great family man and so much fun to hang with. I’m amazed just how much he has influenced my guitar skills and he makes me laugh so much
Thank you for the light hearted fun approach and the clean language that all of the friends and family can enjoy watching.🎉
Had never heard of this player but I am extremely impressed by his talent...and his humor! Have never laughed this much during a Beato interview.
If you like his humor you'll definitely want to check out his outtakes on the Wildwood Guitars channel. Dude is hilarious!
Size-wise yes but more Frodo > Tom Bombadil.
Check out his albums like Strat got your tongue or his countless videos with Wildwood Guitars from Colorado. your mind will be crushed trust me ❤
Man, you are in for some mind explosions. No one plays like that man. PLUS he is constantly cracking jokes. He was actually mild with Rick! He can get way over the top and have you laughing one minute then thinking "God! How is that possible!" He is one of the best guitarists we have.
I literally only know him from gear reviews but, Greg has a personality as big as he is, for sure.
Always a pleasure, would drink beer with.
Great interview. Stayed long 1 hour & 4 minutes. Learned alot from this interview. Congratulations Rick!
Holy smokes this was fun!
Never heard of Greg before but this was a smile end to end
I hope he does get more recognition. He has been blowing minds for 30 years!!
I was happy to hear Greg mention Danny Gatton as one of his influences. Great interview and great player.
And sell more Telecaster gristlemasters!
Greg is amazing. So glad you got to interview him. His playing style is so killer and he’s super down to earth. I reached out to him about a guitar and he kindly responded to my question. He played my new LP Axcess.
He mentioned ‘Doyle Dykes’ who is an INCREDIBLE guitarist. Rick, you really should interview him.
@@ronwilliams1094 I was living up in Big Bear California up in the mountains and Doyle Dykes came and played for our church was so cool
@ Isn’t he amazing?!?!
Doyle is scary good!
Attended a workshop of his in Cape Town .. astounding!
He's so random, funny, creative, brilliant and unique. Love GK
Having seen Greg live once I have been a fan of his ever since. He’s an amazing guitarist in incredible human being and integrates his full personality within his playing and I love it.
you said it right at the start, Rick, one of the greatest guitarist in the world. Greg is an absolut Meister.
I basically watch every video Rick is doing. Some stand out, depending on the artist he's interviewing. This one stands out like a lighthouse by any means. Greg fills every room with his sheer presence like no one else. What an extraordinary human being he is.
The joy in his playing reminds me of Time Pierce.
TIM , MAN, HE DESERVES THE RECOGNITION BC HE'S SUCH A TREASURE -THERE'S AN EDIT FEATURE ON THE RIGHT
@@Shoshi770NYCmaybe you could use it to stop yelling your comment...
👑King Gristle!!! 🎸Fantastic interview Rick! 😃👍
Never heard of him, but my lord, this guy is amazing. How effortlessly he does everything. Very inspiring. Hats off. I need to go practice now…….
Same... I really need to look more into this guy.
How is that possible?!
Oh man, I am soooo glad you did this! I always loved this guy's work. He's such a charismatic character, and so talented as a player. Epic!
Great to see so much actual playing during an interview. Especially for someone like myself learning guitar in my old age. So much to learn.
I think he still lives in Tosa.
His style and tone remind me of Jeff Beck and Roy Buchanan.
I love Greg's Playing. So much character. You are right, Rick, his personality really comes out in his playing!
I've never even seen this man or heard him play before watching this, but I've come to a single conclusion: Holy Scheiße, this guy is awesome.
Welcome to interweb💂🏻♀️
Seeing him live was the best guitar playing I’ve ever seen.
Welcome to the family ….party
@@skatarest77I saw him on the day Jeff Beck died in OKC, he opened his show with “Parted as Lovers” just incredible
GRISTLE IS THE WORD
What an inspiration! Thank you Rick and Greg, for making the blues that much brighter. Love this interview.
Im loving this, I had no idea of who he was sadly. What a great player!!
Greg is the best! I have been waiting for this interview for a very long time.
This is the video we have all been waiting for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been really trying for the last 25 or so years to get ONE really great tone. Greg on this one video had a couple hundred and he doesn't have a problem helping you to get it too. I'm gonna use this as a practic video and try some new techniques
What an outstanding player! Great interview as always, couldn’t believe over an hour passed by so quickly but with so much knowledge packed in .
The one UA-cam guitar guy that definitely needed interviewed on the channel.
Greg is more of a guitar player that happens to also be on UA-cam .
21:28 That was just so beautiful! This man's a huge hunk of talent! Big, gentle and awesome! Thank you Rick!
mind boggling instrumentalist..an absolute guitar hero.. and personality to suit.. bravissimo
