The Allman Brothers Band’s January 16, 1982 performance on the campus of the University Of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. The 1982 lineup by founding member Gregg Allman as well as guitarist Dickey Betts, and drummer Butch Trucks. Also featuring guitarist Dan Toler, bassist David Goldflies, keyboardist Mike Lawler and drummer David “Frankie” Toler. The Allman Brothers Band roll through nine songs, starting with “Jessica” and ending with “Ramblin’ Man.” Included within are such classics as “You Don’t Love Me,” “Blue Sky,” “Southbound” and “Whipping Post.”

Jesus, I came here to watch them perform Jessica and I ended up watching this whole gig. WOW!! What a band!! The best Whipping Post I've ever heard!!!!!!!
Agreed x2! I was born in '81 and agree wholeheartedly. Even after "hating" this music as a kid. My dad listened to them daily. And each day, I was reminded that I got my middle name the greatest guitar player to ever live, Howard Duane Allman. Back then, it meant nothing to me. I mean, it was the mid 80s. Duane & ABB weren't getting the recognition they get today. And I was a kid. I didn't understand the significance of being named after Skydog. Today, as an adult, I couldn't be prouder to be named after Duane. I'll brag about it to anyone who will listen, TBH 😆 This may sound weird but ABB has been a huge part of my life from the day I was born. So much so that I feel like Duane is the uncle I never got to meet. I feel that sort of connection to him. You know...kinda like the grandpa that, was killed in the war that, you never met, etc... And today, I play guitar because of Duane. I own a Goldtop because of Duane & Dickey, also. If you can't tell, I love me some Allman Brothers Band 😁❤️🎸 I know my dad is just tickled to death that I love his music now. I actually just got the album that was just released, The Final Note, for him a couple of days ago. When he opens it, I'll copy it to my pc and then to my phone to listen to in the truck. 😁 Ive done it with every other album I bought for him lately. Last one was Bear's Sonic Journals. The Grateful Dead sound guy bootlegged a show they played together and they released it as an album a couple years ago.
I saw the Dickey Betts band in Boston ..dont remember the year ...but it was at this nightclub called The Channel...the band finished ...and me and my brother were finishing up our last drink smoking a cigarette....out of this side door ...I assume a dressing room...walks Dickey Betts...he says ..Hey man...can I get a smoke of ya?...Shit ya.I light him a smoke...the three of us just standing there....Dickey says hey thanks man...walks away....My brother says to me...I thought you like Dickey Betts...You didnt say a word to him....I told him Dickey Betts is my idol...Then why didn't you say anything to him,,,,?.......I tried but I couldn't talk I was so starstruck left me speechless....true story

Dickie Betts was a national treasure! His music has a natural feel to it that is so warm and heart felt. There is nothing but joy and love of music that comes from his writing and playing. We owe him a great wave of thanks for his creations and his life in music. Rest in the joy that you will be sorely missed by everyone you touched with your life and your music....
Dickey Betts was a superb guitarist. His sound was the result of a very highly skilled and nuanced technique that was rare, and he made it look so easy. He created his sustain with an unusually clean and warm tone from those Marshalls. Truly special.
Tell me about it, I jumped on that highway 20 years ago and havnt stopped going. On the other side of the world at the moment, talk about midnight rider.
So true! As a fellow axeman, I would love to get in his head for just 5 minutes to be able to authentically plagiarize some of his arrangements...pure genius!
Its on DVD......I was at this show ..... it was a free show @ UF in Gainesville, FL....., it was a beautiful day....about 15,000 ppl. A good time was hadby all!
I don’t think many people realize just how much influence Jerry Garcia had on his sound. You can definitely hear that Garcia style right at the beginning.
I was at this concert and it was incredible. There was nothing like the pure, raw energy of the sweet sound of the Allman Brothers on a beautiful, bright and sunny, cool day in January, at Florida’s major party school. Such good times.
Totally agree with these replys! The times outside. Bring my blanket carry my guitar, lie on the beach at Walden Pond with Thoreau in the pines! People you could trust, folks to love in their lives, if ever forever, to learn and dig what's, head for a highway to Stockbridge with Arlo! No cell phones, just talking together, no Facebook, being with others. To live, with my poetry and my songs, with Kris Kristoferson and Dylan, Joan Baez and John Prine. Country music and Coltrane and Brubeck, as jazz and the notes spiral down inward. Live it and love it forever!
No costume changes, no cursing (calling women names, etc), nothing but pure musicianship. They are an example of not only being a southern gentleman but also displaying it on stage. In other words, they are about the music and giving the fans a good show. Concerts like this never grow old. Never.
FIRST AND FOREMOST. THE ALLMAN BROS WERE NOT GENTLEMEN. THEY WERE ROWDY ALCOHOLICS WHO WENT HARD IN THE PAINT. But, beyond that Yeah no costume changes, but it just wasn't that kind of show. If there were costume changes, this wouldn't be any better or worse. If it does get worse for you, then that's just about your personal opinion that's totally divorced from anything one could call "pure." It's just weird cause I think this kind of attitude makes people not wanna pick up a guitar or maybe just live music instruments in general because all the OG's make it sound like all the best musicians have been born already and that there is a road map to being a "pure Performer." That attitude isn't inviting. There are a million reasons that more people are making electronic music, using mdi, and going less analog, but one of them is definitely that people who are really good at that stuff create a much kinder and less intimidating environment for newcomers. I've never heard an electronic musician talk about music in the way that you just did.
LOL, I talked my way into Boogie Balls (BYOB) from age 13 or 14. Not as entertaining as I heard the Halloween Ball at UF were, but Boogie Balls were crazy fun and the spilt alcohol would turn the floor polish into a slippery wet mess. My,kids are so boring in comparison. Guess I should be grateful, but I had a damn good time back in the day. Hate they’re stuck with Reality TV talent show & UA-cam/internet “stars”, auto-tune, and few instruments. And they don’t know the thrill a shared live music experience brought to us!
Well I'm 70 and first saw them in '70 in Melbourne, FL. Best damn southern band ever! Duane Allman was a master slide guitarist and I was mesmerized by his guitar technique. Those were the daze my friends...✌Peace!✌👍
I went to this concert. I was 13 years old. Man, this made an impression on me as a young person really getting into music at the time. Made a huge impression on me as a musician. This is how it's done. Incredible. Rest in peace,Dicky. You blew me away that day. Still do.
Seen the ABB several times throughout the late, late '70s and beyond... my only regret is to never have seen Duane live slidin' up and down that axe! There is no better band than ABB as far as I'm concerned... Peace!
i saw the Allman Brothers many times between 1991 and 2000. one that stands out is a free show at Mississippi State University. they have a natural outdoor amphitheater. Blues Traveler opened the show and John Popper jammed with the Allmans. Amazing watching Warren Haynes and Dickey Betts trying to outduel each other on guitar.
This show pieced me through my heart! Being a Gator from 1973-88, Gainesville and UF had so many great shows - from Tom Petty and Bob Seger playing at the Ratskeller and Dubs for $1, the Outlaws and Jimmy “Jesus” Buffett, Jessie Colin Young playing free on the Ritz Union lawn, Steve Forbert and others playing on SPE lawn, Savoy Brown, Commander Coty, Climax Blues Band and Pure Prairie League playing at the Halloween Balls, Billy Joel, Waylon Jennings, Cyndi Lauper, Elton John, Grand Funk, the Doobies, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Cash, Beach Boys, Harry Chapin playing for less than $5 at the Florida Gym (known as Alligator Alley), Dylan and Rolling Thunder on Florida Field ($8.75 which was pricey at the time), Ray Charles, Ginger Baker, Jerry Lee Lewis, Muddy Waters, Eric Burton, Spirit, Ike and Tina, B.B. King and Bromberg at the Great Southern Music Hall for less than $5, Steve Martin, Gamble Rogers, Dion, Brubeck at the Beef and Bottle, and I’m forgetting a whole lot more of great shows at that special time in life. This concert was right across the street from the dorm Hume Hall and the Shell had tremendous free shows like Karla Bonoff, Devo, Talking Heads, Warren Zevon, REM, Wendy and the Plasmatics, INXS, Charlie Daniels, the Ramones, Don Henley and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Gainesville and the University of Florida were idealistic during the 70’s and 80’s and a wonderful place to party, grow up and actually get a great education in school, life and music. Thank you Music Vault, and of course the Allman Brothers for this fabulous posting of a great show when the band was peaking. You made this old Gator feel like he was walking from the Band Shell after the show down Museum Road past Fraternity Road to party down with friends at Lake Alice. Thanks so much and Go Gators!
@Laura Delereyelle Dear Laura, Thanks for your reply. Gainesville and UF were so idyllic - it was a great place to learn and grow up into adulthood. I wrote a some words about those years in Hogtown called Neverland - it's about that moment in time - although the years have slipped by, those times are still precious even if though only memories now. I used to live out on Lake Santa Fe during graduate school, not to far from Keystone Lake, Buddy's Landing, Blue Water Bay and Chiapini's Gas Station which was across the street with the $0.25 beers - such a great area. When you create that time machine, save an extra seat for me! All the best and stay safe. Go Gators!!!
Nole here, but saw Zappa at alligator alley and Weather Report at Lake Alice field. Was always jelly how hogtown got so many concerts and Tally did not. We had our share but not the name acts like UF. 1978-1984 ish
@@jtborl John B, That Zappa show was great - I believe that was April 1980 in the old Florida gym, aka Alligator Alley. Such a tremendous guitarist and Frank was on fire that night - started with Chungas Revenge, ended with the Tony Allen cover Night Owl with twenty other songs in-between - from the Mothers (A Pound for Brown on the Bus, You Didn’t Try to Call Me, I Ain’t Got Bo Heart) to Joe’s Garage. During those years, you guys were kicking our tails on the gridiron but Hogtown was the rock n roll champs. Music like you mentioned transcend rivalries, even if only for a couple of hours. Thanks for the reminder of Phi Zappa Crappa! Best, rb

Just saw Duane Betts Band-- Dickie's son, play a few months ago here in CA. He mentioned that Derek Trucks joins him on his next release💖 I love every era of The Allman Bros....🎸
Gainesville the best place in the world for a concert, and the best band for that show. Dicky has control of that instrument. The way he effortlessly goes from rhythm to the lead part is so smooth. He makes it look easy.
I worked at Paragon Agency in Macon, Georgia....The Allman Brothers were the best country rock band ever in my opinion....great talent came out of Macon, Georgia
Betts' song writing and arranging is also way under appreciated! He's the one who comes up with these really sophisticated two guitar harmony parts, and interesting rhythmic changes and band parts. It sounds so sweet and melodic. Deceptively complicated, actually. -- Appeals to the mass audience, rockers, and jazzers alike. Just Brilliant! Yeah, one of the best bands of all time -- at the top of their game.
I was born in 1963 and have been privileged to have grown up in an era to have enjoyed the greatest music of any generation and am still listening to it all.
40 years ago this was amazing, today it’s superb , and 40 years from now it will be breathtaking . Oh how we long for the simpler times. We are blessed to have experienced them.
I wasn't even born when this show took place, but good music transcends generations. It's amazing how good music can stand the test of time and continue to resonate with people, regardless of when they were born.
Dicky Betts!!!! the one and only!!! That was a free concert! they would come to Gainesville occasionally and free concerts. Rumor had it that Greg (while living in Sarasota, FL) had a few too many DUIs so his Community Service was giving free concerts in the state. Hence...this one. It was a fun day!!!

He has: he was instrumental in getting Eric Clapton to record Layla properly. The final version and recording only happened after he was invited to the studio. He is playing on the song (the original version of Clapton when still Derrick and the Dominos)
Check out the song “Dickey Betts” by The Dean Ween Group. A great homage to a great musician. And it was Duane that played the outro slide guitar on Layla.

This was my era of music I'm blessed....nothing today even comes close,
Agreed!
The Grateful Dead sound guy bootlegged a show they played together and they released it as an album a couple years ago.
amen to that....I saw the ABB in the Boston Garden in 73...dear Jesus....music is dead today

Saw him open for Hank Jr once in west Palm Beach fla. He can bend them strings, that's for sure, all of those guys were exceptional.!!
Dickey Betts was a superb guitarist. His sound was the result of a very highly skilled and nuanced technique that was rare, and he made it look so easy. He created his sustain with an unusually clean and warm tone from those Marshalls. Truly special.

Live it and love it forever!

Well said. And so very true.

Thanks for your reply.

@@jtborl John B,
That Zappa show was great - I believe that was April 1980 in the old Florida gym, aka Alligator Alley.

Saw this line up with Bonnie Bramlett in '79 Bozeman Montana! The best! I like every line up this band has ever had. Miss them so much!
Completely concur.
I wasn't even born when this show took place, but good music transcends generations. It's amazing how good music can stand the test of time and continue to resonate with people, regardless of when they were born.
So special to see at 3:33 😇✝️☮️😇😇🎼🙌✌️🎤🎹🥁🌍🎵🎶🪽♈🪶🕰️🕊️🙏🙏🎸😇
The guitar gods have gained another legend in heaven. We'll miss you Dickey..
"One Way Out > Southbound" WOOOOOHEEEE 🔥💨 Fills my soul!
Wow duel guitar work phenomenal. Now time for some Thin Lizzy!!
+Lauren Curry When I was a kid we used to watch the Allman Brothers play at the local armory in Sarasota for 75 cents! That was a looong time ago...My best friend dated Duane. (Hey, she looked 18! lol) A few years later, as a student at UF, we used to listen to Tom Petty play for free on campus. He was in a band called Mudcrutch, as I recall and hosted some very fun parties...
wow, crazy stuff!!!
Hey, I remember Mudcrutch at the Plaza of the Americas on the UF campus, Halloween night, 1971. It was called the "Freaker's Ball". A lot of crazy costumes, etc. Gave a whole new meaning to higher education!
Free concert for DUI punishment, ,,, uhh,, No way,,, NO WAY, # love ya anyway,,,,,
Lauren Curry.
grew up with these guys their music, in the late 1960´s, we were teenagers, but fel in love with this southern USA rockmusic! My younger brother (died 9 years ago) saw them in Holland / Hilversum live, I was´nt in the position to go, I still regret that, R.I P. Dicky, thank God we have still your excellent guitarplay and your music in social media and on tape!!
I was there in January 16th 82 . 25 then - now 67 years old . Seems like yesterday in so many ways . If you live in bliss - life is a flash ! Favourite band along with the Rolling Stones . Best concert band ever (Allman Brothers ) . Played 5 1/2 hours routinely ......
One of the greatest bands of all time! Dickie Betts needs more recognition as one of music's best guitarist !!
He has: he was instrumental in getting Eric Clapton to record Layla properly. The final version and recording only happened after he was invited to the studio. He is playing on the song (the original version of Clapton when still Derrick and the Dominos)
@@jaapvandersijp4203 sorry man it was duane allman who played on layla.
Check out the song “Dickey Betts” by The Dean Ween Group. A great homage to a great musician. And it was Duane that played the outro slide guitar on Layla.
Please !! :-) He's up there with Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, David Gilmour, Robben Ford, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Neal Schon, Larry Carlton, etc !!!
Only two guitarists I ever wanted to be like: Eric Clapton & Dicky Betts. That's including all the other greats such as Gary Moore, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc. etc.
Growing up around Macon Ga in the late seventies and eighties was great fun. Can't name all the great bands I was blessed to see.
Southern Rock will never die
Wish i'd seen this ABB. First show was 90 and this is much better.
R.I.P. GREG ALLMAN 5/27/17--- THANKS FOR THE MUSIC......
I saw Greg at the Portland Blues fest the July before he died. His voice wasn’t as strong (how could it be?) but every bit as soulful. Ain’t nobody better than the Allman Brothers.
Where is Jomo?
@@farleygranger very cool man. I wish I was there.
@@farleygranger What was Watkins Glen like? 600,000 people. Must have been a highlight and much better than Woodstock. And only three bands , but the best live bands.
@AllanBriggs I think in a perfect world I’d rather see Zappa than the Band, along with the Dead/Brothers, but agree what a show!! @farleygranger do tell
Southern rock will never loose its place in music history. Thank you to all those that paved the way.
Gregg didn't like to be called a Southern rock band. He preferred to be known as a blues band.
If we keep on down the path we're on, there won't be music history, or any other history before this century is out. History requires that there still be humans on the planet.

@@AbbyNormal777 And you are certain of this - how? He told you?
Seen them at least 4 times and am still morning😢
