  • Hi, welcome to my 6th BEEFCAKE vid. I'm explaining how to have road legal ALL RED lenses here in the UK on your VW Bug Beetle. Enjoy :)

    For anyone wondering why I kept trying new lenses, its because I already had a broken repro lens in the garage I had tested it with so knew it would work and needed to find a pair the same, however not all lenses are equal!
    .......with thanks to MegaBug & CoolAir for your help with the lenses :)

    I've been thinking of exactly the same thing for my snowflake tail lights. Thanks for the confirmation, I was going to get some Green bulbs to test it before I saw your video

      I think you might struggle. The glass on the old flakes is pretty thick and especially if used with the diffuser I'm not surebif would be bright enough either. I'd love to know how you get on but have to be honest I don't think will work as for me inly worked with the cheap thin plastic lenses. Also there's little space in a snowflake for additional LED etc, so if are going to it go for the brightest thing you can find! Best of luck! 🙂👍

    I'm glad I stumbled across this as I am about to do exactly the same thing, well maybe. I managed to get some green LED BA15S lamps, however havent bought lenses yet. On cars pre 65, they are actually permitted to have red indicators at the rear and white at the front, I got pulled over for this in a 72 beetle many moons back and had to look it up. Just building another 72 that looks like a 65, and being a deep red car, red lenses would be the trick, however as you suggest, not all red lenses are equal! I have some really old tail lights which are a bit faded, in places on those the colour still looks red or in more worn bits, green!
    Think I might have to go back to the drawing board, but useful to know about the different lamp covers producing different results :)

      NP glad you found it useful. I was very disappointed the genuine lenses I had didn't work as we're lovely quality. It was only the cheapest of the cheap ones that it worked on. I have to warn you though, I was told the other day that they can hardly see my indicators in the day time. Filtering out part of the light spectrum does make them less bright, even with my addition of the LED in there too.
      I didn't know about the pre65 red indicator reg. Is that in the UK? Now I wish I'd kept those original lenses! LOL 😅

      @@PeoplesCar yeah if you look up the construction and use of act on vehicle lighting regs and also the mot tester handbook (might need to find an older one as it probably isn't covered) it said in there about it, not sure if someone might want to be funny though suggesting most vws came with orange indicating even with semifores!
      I've ordered some lenses from lime bug as they seem to all be much of muchness and will look into the brightness problem. I put led lamps in my camper as reversing lights and found that 7w is where its at brightness wise, as for colour, I have green led lamps but apparently the colour green can be the thing to make it work right, so maybe some trail and error!
      Thanks for the input though as it givese some stuff work on :)

    default turn signal bulb (7440) for my car is clear incandescent behind red lens.
    a video showing amber behind red lens looked amber
    got both Sylvania regular and silver star (brighter) but for me it just looked lighter shade of red, returned to store
    couldnt find a green 7440 incandescent bulb but found 7443 (still fits)
    my results for a 7443 green bulb behind red lens, it does have an yellow/amber appearance
    incandescent 600LM brightness: dim at night, useless in the day time
    (had to add load resister for LED to stop hyperflash)
    LED #1 1400LM brightness: twice as bright as incandescent but not as bright as other lights, but dim at day
    LED #2 2500LM brightness: ordered yesterday, waiting for it in the mail, ill update on the results.......

      @Peoples Car - aka Volkswagen they lied, 1 spot the ad said 2500 PER BULB, another spot it said 2800 PER BULB, when I got it and installed it, the brightness was the same as the 1400 bulb, I wrote them to complain, they said they meant 2800 PER SET, they tried talking me into a partial refund and keep the bulbs, I sent it back for a full refund

      In my experience they just remained red. Trick only works with the cheap lenses I found. The original high quality ones seem to remain red regardless what you shine through them or at least that's with the lenses I tried. Good luck :)

      No not at all. I suspect I'd be more likely to be pulled for them not being very bright tbh. Coppers don't seem to be bothered about old classics here. I've run with no front plate for years now. Maybe I've just been lucky. 😊👍

    I hab the same Problem with my US Car in Germany.... green Bulbs works good in the dark but in sunlight you can´t see anything. I also take extrem yellow LED´s, its better but not good enough in direct sunlight.

    • @PeoplesCar
      @PeoplesCar  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah I totally agree it's not ideal. The led do help give it a little extra but still not bright as an amber lend. I've been toying with the idea of creating an early heart style tail light out of my 1200 units to use for an indicator 😉

    Did you try a amber bulb behind the red lens?

    • @CarTravelSweden
      @CarTravelSweden Рік тому +1

      Yes you did I saw earlier in this thread.
      I also trieds amber behind a red lens on a US car, it remains red. But the red lens is very thick. So I dont know how some people get orange behind a red lens. It must be that the red lens is of a thinner material. But this dude managed to get a amber light. ua-cam.com/video/su1rZA_Z3HU/v-deo.html

    • @PeoplesCar

      Yeah it didn't work on either the thick or thin lens for me. Soz 👍

    • @PeoplesCar
      @PeoplesCar  Рік тому +2

      @@CarTravelSweden Hmmmm. I wonder if thats because the orange leds are so much brighter? Or possibly those lenses are designed with a thin red film or something? Really not sure. The major drawback is the brightness. Because filtering the green light through red means with the luminosity of the bulbs and led i have fitted, makes them less bright. I may have to revisit this and see ifbi can find some massive super bright LED and see how that works. Thanks 🙂👍

    The success of this approach depends critically on the spectral transmission of the red material. It works exactly like a low-pass audio filter. Blue light is equivalent to higher pitch, and red to lower pitch. Just where in the orange part of the spectrum the cutoff occurs determines the viability. A deeper red filter cuts off too much of the orange (and of course yellow, green and blue)
    The red hue must be leaning already to a slight orange in order that enough of the necessary shorter wavelengths can be passed.
    By adding a green light source, the light emitted from it has at least a good part of the red light attenuated, thereby helping to isolate and enhance the orange light that is passed. The result of this combination is a relatively narrow bandpass filter, centered more or less on the orange part of the spectrum. If the overlap between the two cutoffs (one for the light source and the other for the filter) is narrow and or not sharp, the resulting light intensity can be rather weak.
    Knowing beforehand the spectral characteristics of both the light source and the filter through which it is seen can allow to construct a working solution without having to first try anything out.

      Unfortunately I couldn't find my spectrometer! 😂 I jest but that's an awesome comment thankyou. I vaguely know about this stuff because I'm bit of a nerd and love science, plus the kids were asking me the other day why the sky is blue, but I bet many don't. The cheaper the lens the less dark and vivid the red colouration, and as you suggest leaning more towards orange. Many thanks 😁👍
