Throwback Thursday: Amber vs Red Rear Turn Signals

  • Vehicles today are safer than ever before with passive and active safety features.
    However, a long time pet peeve with Motoring TV is why amber rear turn signals are not mandatory.
    One study by the NHTSA in 2008, said that amber (yellow) rear turn signals are up to 28% more effective in avoiding car crashes than red ones.
    When was the last time you saw an emergency vehicle that did not have amber turn signals?
    (This segment originally appeared on Motoring TV 2001 Episode 2)

    I totally agree with this guy. Red rear turn signals are stupid and pointless. I'll take it a step further and state that any flashing light on a car should be completely separate from all others including the front turn signals. For example early Japanese imports like late 70's and early 80's Corollas had amber rear signals and the front ones were in the bumper apart from the running lights and head lights.

      Definitely has to be said, especially as there are some Tesla, Jeep, and RAM models using a version of the "one lamp for braking and turning" design that uses switchback LEDs which are red for the brake lights but then change to amber for turning. This is a bit better but still stupid

      Dominic Fong Glad to see at least someone else gets it. Turn signal ambiguity in North America is quite a problem and it truly gets under my skin how little people give a shit about this. Outside North America, amber turn aignals are required. Only Americans have to deal with brands like Acura boasting about luxury and technology yet neglecting the Amber turn signal at the rear end

      @@reallyrandomrides1296 for me it’s quite the opposite. After being rear ended by someone that claimed that they couldn’t see my turn signal I’ll only buy a vehicle that has LED red turn signal/brake light combination lights. I had a 2017 Ford Explorer that had a LED brake light and incandescent amber turn signals. At night, upon braking the red LED brake lights are so bright that it virtually blinds and renders the incandescent amber turn signals useless. The lady that rear ended me claimed that she had no idea I was turning and t-boned me as she was trying to pass. I asked her why she didn’t stop and she stated she couldn’t see my turn signal. Amidst my anger I dismissed her claims. However, afterwards I noted she was right. Incandescent amber turn signals should be illegal. LED amber turn signals that are noticeably separated from the brake lights are better. But in my experience, red integrated brake light/turn signals are what most drivers in the United States are familiar with. Cheers.

    Even worse is seeing the 2019 Volvos (built in America now) with red rear turn signals after using amber for 40+ years in North America. What a disgrace, considering they built their otherwise excellent reputation on safety innovation and engineering. Other European and Japanese car companies are doing the same, even though in most other markets of the world this setup is illegal. And rightfully so, as Mr Kenzie points out the many shortfalls of the red turn signal set up.

      It seems Toyota has done the same. We have a 2006 Tundra with amber turn signals on the back, clear lens with amber bulb. However, on the road, I've seen some newer Tundras and other Toyota models that use red turn signals on the rear. In the case of Toyota, the turn signals are separate from the brake lights, I'm guessing so that in Europe, where legislation required amber rear turn signals, they can easily add amber turn signals. However, in north america, not only are red rear turn signals allowed, they are also allowed to share the functionality of a red tail light as both a brake light and turn signal. This is common on US makes.

      It's particularly ironic how they're doing this at the same time they switch to using LEDs for turn signals. If the 2000s told us anything, it's that LEDs should be making manufacturers stoked to include amber turn signals in the rear as they look completely colorless unless lit, the VERY look they were going for with the clear lenses and amber halogen design we were mostly stuck with back then. But now that LEDs are reliable and affordable, this should be a non issue, yet instead of embracing this they either just continue to use outdated, ugly halogen ones that still have a visible amber tinge inside the lenses when off or use LEDs but just make everything red in the rear.

  • @reallyrandomrides1296
    @reallyrandomrides1296 2 роки тому +4

    Today with many vehicles having LED taillights, at least the LEDs are might brighter and give that instant on/off effect which makes them more visible as turn signals, even if they're red. But, I don't understand why so many vehicle manufacturers insist on using red turn signals, whether as a separate bulb or combined with the brake lights. Some American cars that are sold overseas are equipped with amber rear turn signals to be compliant, but then they use red turn signals for the US and Canadian market. If they went to the trouble of making a version with amber turn signals, I don't see why they couldn't just install those on all vehicles.
    And then there are some, like VW and Audi which come to mind quickly, that are sold with amber rear turn signals in Europe, but those sold in the US and Canada have the red brake lights set up as turn signals, and the lens for the independent turn signal is unused. I heard the size of the amber turn signal was too small for US standards, so that's why they opted to just use the brake lights as turn signals. A better option would just be to make amber turn signals that are compliant for all markets, like they used to do.

      @reallyrandomrides1296 2 роки тому +1

      @@haroldbeauchamp3770 It's not that there are some people who are unable to discern a flashing light from a brake light, it's that under certain circumstances, like glare on a sunny day, or foggy and snowy days, and even on a clear day, a separate amber turn signal is better visible and catches people's attention better because there is much more contrast coming from a lens that is unlit then lit, versus one that is dimly lit and a bit brighter like when the full lighting system is on. And, if there's a separate brake light and a separate turn signal, to me it seems like that would be brighter and better visible, good at getting the attention of distracted drivers even on a clear day.

    Note to U.S. Legislators:
    1 - Trash the effective projected luminous lens area requirement (FMVSS 108 - Section 5.1.1.26)
    2 - Outlaw red turn signals and make amber ones mandatory!
    3 - DO IT NOW!!!
    The EPLLA requirement is outdated and has got to go! It actually sometimes forces car manufacturers to have shared compartments for brake lamp and turn signal, a safety hazard!

    This is important for front turn signals too. Most vehicles made over the last few decades have a combination bulb with a dimmer and a brighter filament, so the same light acts as a marker light when the full lighting system is turned on, and then flashes a bit brighter when a turn signal is activated. As someone else mentioned, back in the 1970s and 1980s, many Japanese cars, especially Toyotas which come to mind, had a separate amber lens in the bumper which was only used as a turn signal, nothing else, so it's got better contrast since it's on/off (not dimly lit, then a bit brighter for the turn signal). And, they're far enough from the headlights, which is good because the headlights are brighter and the turn signals being right next to the headlights are harder see, the contrast isn't as good. I've seen a few modern vehicles start using the older set up with a dedicated turn signal in the lower front bumper now.
    On my 2009 Tundra, I got high end Morimoto LED headlights, which also have white LEDs around the perimeter of the headlight with a switchback effect. As daytime running lights, or even as marker lights when the full lighting system is on, they're white. When a turn signal is on, they flash amber, and mine also has the sequential turn signal effect which makes them even more visible.
    Until 2013, Toyota Tundras had a separate amber turn signal in the rear tail lights (a white lens with an amber bulb). When the trucks were redesigned in 2014, they still kept a separate bulb for the turn signal, but it's now a red lens instead. That's a step backwards. A similar situation happened when the Tacoma pickup was redesigned too.

    In North America flashing amber lights indicate the front of the vehicle. It also indicates road service vehicles such as tow trucks or road maintenance vehicles such as graders or street sweepers. It also indicates to slow down and look and proceed when safe to do so at an intersection. Also including flashing amber lights as turn signal for the rear of the car may add to the confusion of uses already in place for flashing amber lights. 😮

    In the case of a large, American, classic car- that came with red rear turn signals standard- how would I retrofit it with amber rear turn signals; even if I wanted to?
    With my car there is only one double-filament bulb (each side), that fits into one bulb “bucket” each side. And each bulb handles brake lights, taillights, turn signals, and 4-ways.
    How would I even venture to isolate the turn signal wire in order to give it its own separate amber bulb, and its own bulb housing colored amber?
    It seems nearly impossible.
