    Aside from red or yellow. USA needs ban intergrated stop/turn signal light. Just too damn confusing to tell apart when brakes are pressed intermittently. I really do think it's a hazard.

      The intergrated stop/turn signal combination is proven to be one of the safest applications for stopping and turning possible due to its simplicity. The use of a separate bulb for turn signals are marginally more dangerous as the bright red light is proven to overpower the less bright amber signal. Which is why at night, when someone hits the brakes, you see the red brake lights much brighter than you see the yellow turn signal.

      @@haroldbeauchamp3770 You are just plain wrong. A red break light wont grab a drivers attention who's in an adjacent lane. Even more so if it is the break light itself because it's not unusual for people to tap their breaks in traffic and you just ignore it. A different color sticks out and is proven to be much safer. Just because the break light might be a little brighter doesn't mean you won't see the amber light as well (see at 1:00).

    The effectiveness of Amber in the 2009 study was shown to be more statistically significant than the CHMSL study, yet they still aren’t mandatory. It’s so disappointing! If amber is required in the front, it should also be required for the rear.

    I also demand to know why German cars sold in North America now all have red rear indicator lights when they didn't used to? They're not red in their homeland.

    • @canto_v12
      @canto_v12 6 років тому +13

      Nicholas Smith there is a subtle technicality that causes this. RoW (rest of world) cars don't need to meet a turn signal "surface area" spec that the USDOT has. So in Europe, VW/Audi can leave a very thin amber bar for its rear blinkers, which are plenty bright when lit by high-output LEDs. But that doesn't meet the US spec, so rather than redesign the entire cluster, VWAG just programmed the entire brake light to blink on US cars. And they can skimp on a few expensive amber lenses and LEDs as a bonus.

    • @juanzingarello4005
      @juanzingarello4005 6 років тому +7

      That's a crock of crap. Have you seen the turn signal in the Tesla Model X and Toyota Avalon? A thin strip less than half an inch. Simply put, the Germans found an effective way to cut costs. Since the Americans can get away with it, why not them?

    • @Ezalian
      @Ezalian 5 років тому

      Not really because of 'very thin amber bar', but it's the "surface area" of where the indicator starts. The thing about Audi and other cars makers is that it does not pass DOT because of sequential turn signal. Each segment of the turn signal of minimum 2200 sq. mm should light up immediately at the start of the indicator to pass. So, actually they can get a pass on the turn signal if they don't do the sequential thing or they can do the sequential thing but in reverse like the new Toyota Avalon.

    • @H0704
      @H0704 5 років тому +1

      The first segment to light up has to be of a certain area, irrespective of whether it's sequential or not. And then there is another important thing: in the US, lights on a moving part of the vehicle (i.e. trunk lid) don't count toward that minimum surface area. That's why the European thin strip doesn't pass the US reqs, since you're only looking at the outer half. Take for example the X5. It has to have combined stop and turn signal because only together do those two outer small segments meet the area requirement. The alternative would be a rear light assembly of a far less sleek and esthetic design. Oh, and btw, it looks like the outer part of the Avalon turn signal is steady on and off, with only the inner trunk lid part doing the reverse sweep.

    You know why they use red instead of amber? Two less bulbs and too less pair of wires. It's a cost thing. It annoys me even more when companies like Mercedes put the amber bulb in but use the brake lamp as the turn signal instead.
    Also, I don't understand the final reason that Brian stated as to why automakers go with red. Because they don't want to risk it by doing something different? Some cars go from red to amber and vice versa during facelifts. All three American brands have used amber and red. There has never been a scenario where an automaker was sued because he had amber turn signals. Yet tests from the IIHS proved that the risk is greater with red. Wouldn't this go the other way around? Johnny B. Bucks got killed in an American C-Class for using a red turn signal that couldn't be recognized by Jack D. Ass who slammed into him. EVERYONE else is mandating amber. Why did you, Mercedes Benz decide to go red for this one country where Johnny was killed? Makes no sense. It's all about costs. That being said, I think we live in an age where everyone is trying to penny pinch here and there and the reason we see more red nowadays is for this reason.

      The cost effective thing does not go up anymore nowadays because there are a lot of new cars on the road with led indicators, also cars are becoming so expensive that cost effectiveness of using red turn signals is peanuts. It proves that there are more accidents in America because of the confusion of red turn signals that insurance companies are much better off with amber turn signals... Much cheaper because of less accidents. Europe is just proof of that and America just won't admit it.
      There is just one big major f-ing reason..
      It's all about esthetics! Esthetics are more important to America than safety...

    1:16 That would have been true, if not European car manufacturers, specifically German ones. They deliberately change their taillights with already existing amber turn signals to red ones for US market. On some Audis and BMWs I even saw amber light emitting LEDs disengaged in the rear taillights and an additional wire went to stop lights to make them blink as turn signals.
    So you have to firstly develop and assemble ‘full spec’ taillight with amber lights and then secondly you have to rearrange them.
    Why the hell all that if amber turn signals are perfectly legal???
    Just put the European spec taillights and they’ll do the job perfectly!
    So why then do they change from amber to red?

LED lighting has had a major impact on the effective of rear turn signals and safety. The NHTSA study was flawed as the data didn’t include input from the elderly, color blind, or brand new drivers. The newest data includes these drivers and proves the absolute safest turn signals are one blinking LED light. The integrated brake/turn signal combination utilizing LED lights was easier for the elderly and color blind to see. It’s scientifically proven and common sense. The most confusing and least safe style was the LED brake light and incandescent amber turn signal. Elderly and color blind stated that the very bright LED brake lights overpowered the less bright incandescent amber turn signal and they were unable to tell the turn signal was on. Another interesting and very safe example can be found on some Ram and Jeep vehicles. Where the LED brake light switches from red to amber when the turn signal is turned on. Very cool technology.

    This is another one of those "only in the US" abnormalities.
    Wasn't there a story about an american auto manufacturer pushing for red rear indicator/brake lights integration because it made their design look better?
    Regardless, the prevalence of red siganl lights is something that ***US car manufacturers advocated for (one of "the big three" if I remember well) and it has been, in my opinion, the most idiotic thing any car manufacturer has done (along with electric seatbelts, oy!). Ever since I was a kid (53 now) i cannot remember a single car my dad owned that did not have amber turn signals. And I only remember because our dad used to be an auto tech all his life and had his own "mechanic shop." My brother and I learnt about cars early on thanks to him.
    Only two of the cars I've owned did not have amber signal lights, and I rigged the assemblies to have separate RED brake lights **and separate* AMBER turn signal lights. It's not difficult. And for those trying to make a point of how bright the different colour bulbs are -- that's a moot point because of current LED technology.
    The rest of the world is on-board with a **logical and safe standard.** And there are multiple studies (google them) with plenty of data as to the better effectiveness and safety advantages of amber signal lights.
    But, litigious and absurdly individualistic US always wants to beat to its own drum, even if it's deafeningly stupid. 😉

    Feels like the most cruicial explanation is left out. US standards require a minimum size of 50 cm2 in the US for turnsignal. While the rest of the world use tiny LED-stripes, to get the right lumen required, US still demand a specific size for turn signals. The 50 squrare millimeters can only be achieved by letting the whole lamp flash instead. Trends are of course playing a vital role, like when cars managing the required size in yellow space, still use the red signals, but the core for last years shift for red, has to to with LED-taillights.

    • @exoticcar5482

      Another scenario: you're approaching from back-left, other car has broken left tail light, you do not have direct line of sight to front of other car. How do you know that left turn signal isn't on?
      50 cm² is 50 square centimeters.
      50 square millimeters would be laughably easy... That's closer to size of mirror mounted indicators (also known as side repeaters) in some modern cars.

    Call me contrarian, but I actually do think there is a legitimate reason beyond style not to have amber turn signals here in the United States. Unlike European roads, American roads are considerably larger and more frequented at night-thus, it makes sense to pick a wavelength that retains its visibility at longer ranges. Amber, though more visible within close range-is blinding when too close whereas red is sufficient without burning the retinas (excluding those LEDs that do not know the definition of too many lumens).
    The issue emerges due to the design shift. Turn signals used to flip the switch completely on and off, including at night-however, recently they only change the intensity. Separated brake and turn signals are supposed to fix this, but in my opinion convey too much information. I do not need to know if you are braking and turning-the dominant action is sufficient for my reaction. Furthermore, the combined signals when both are active have a wavelength canceling effect in which the turn signal is blocked by the brake-though this could be intended, the intensity is unpleasant and distracting.
