Talbot Horizon Brake Caliper Upgrade for VW Bug Beetle Brakes. Subaru STi VW Bug Beetle BEEFCAKE

Hi, welcome to #05 Talbot Horizon Front Brakes Upgrade for VW Bug Beetle. In this vid I'm showing how we fitted the Talbot Horizon front brake calipers to my 1972 VW Beetle. Its only a small performance upgrade over stock Bug calipers but a relatively easy swap if you can find some, heres how to do it. :-)
(If your looking for high performance gains there are other options now available on the market tho be careful not to overbrake the front of a bug, there isn't much weight up front and if not careful will just lock up).
Oh and I know I'm not going to get a job in Photoshop! was just a bit of fun LOL :)
I believe my Calipers are Talbot Horizon 1973-3 to 81. (Possibly also fitted on: Simca 1100 Ti 74 to 78, Talbot Rancho 77-6 to 81)
Though there does seem to be some confusion as to which to use. The Keith Seume book suggests using the later ones according to this site where you can see the differences.

For reference the porsche 944 rear brakes I mention are stock from early steel A arm setup. I think these changed after 86.

Great video, thanks! Would you happen to know any part numbers for these callipers? I checked the Keith sueme book, but no numbers or of which model they are off. Autodoc is listing some, but it's by engine size and year made between.

UPDATED. I think there is a thread on Volkszone which lists which can and can't be used. I think j used all the useful info from that in the description below. I have to say that really it's only a small upgrade and there are a few decent kits on the market now if can stretch to that such as the Wilwood setup. I'm planning to improve performance of these further by fitting a remote servo and will do a video as that upgrade as it happens. Thanks for watching 😊👍

I have the same calipers on my 1303 and they are a great upgrade, the braking is far better than stock. Do you tested the rear 944 brake pads on the talbot calipers? There isn't almost any good pad compound for talbot calipers, and of the 944 pads fits, that problem is solved

Yeah when I compared them they did look interchangeable. However there was more depth of braking material on the 944 pad so wasn't sure if this would cause problems. Thankyou for confirming the do fit and are interchangeable! Brill Tx :)
I personally didn't think they were a big upgrade. I'm not sure if this is down to the 944 master cylinder etc? However I'm currently saving for a brake servo which I'm told makes the brakes significantly more usable. I'll no doubt make a vid as soon as do that one :)

Which backing plate did you use? And can you add part numbers for the stuff you used?

The front brakes are all standard VW disc setup so I assume the backing plate is standard for that. It was many years ago I swapped to disc brakes and can't actually remember those details but can't see why it wouldn't just be standard kit. Re. the caliper, I added a bit more information in the description below the vid that might help. I never noticed any part numbers on the calipers but will take another look when next under the bug. :)

Hi bud, tbh I have absolutely no idea! I heard about that they 'fitted' about 10 years ago, went online and dropped on a set of NOS calipers cheap as chips! I was very lucky I think as I've never seen a Talbot Horizon since I was a kid I cant imagine there are many still around. I just had a quick look on ebay UK and couldn't see any on there, though this is an interesting article:

I wonder if there might be similar calipers from a Chrysler of that era over your side of the pond? or even a Peugeot 309 which is what replaced it as Peugeot owned the Talbot brand?
I also noticed this "Production of the Horizon continued in Spain and Finland until 1987". Hope that helps :)
Oh and PS, I noticed while looking on ebay for you different brake pad designs listed as Talbot Horizon. I'll try and find which caliper year mine is and update the description ASAP :)
