Hmmm…where is the source for this? Genuinely curious bc Black isn’t listed as a producer on the film. It wouldn’t be his decision or part to give although I’m sure he may have had influence. Casting decisions ultimately come down to the director and producers. Just because Black is the main star doesn’t make it his movie. Especially at that time in his career. Here’s the original quote: “Early in filming, an insecure Robert Tsai approached director Richard Linklater and tried to talk him out of letting him be in the movie because he felt he wasn't right for the role. Linklater responded that it was his very insecurity that made him exactly right for the role, and kept him in. Fittingly, Tsai's character, Lawrence, has a very similar conversation with Dewey Finn (Mr. S) about not feeling right for his role in the band.” Richard Linklater is the director which means he made that decision. Just want to give credit where it’s deserved. He’s also been nominated for 5 Oscars. Hope that helps!
My favorite Jack Black story is this: Judith Love Cohen, who helped create the Abort-Guidance System which rescued the Apollo 13 astronauts, went to work on the day she was in labor. She took a printout of a problem she was working on to the hospital. She called her boss and said she finished the problem and gave birth to Jack Black.

One thing I especially love about this film is how Dewey just wants everyone to feel good about who they are. Like, when Lawrence and Tamika open up to him about their insecurities, his response is literally just 'so what, who cares, you have talent, you're awesome', and when Billy wants to be the stylist instead of security, he just shrugs and goes 'okay' and lets the kid follow his passion. You absolutely nailed it at 19:11 when you talk about parents. I've been a guitar teacher for 25 years. I've had some of the most amazing students ever, but I've also had a lot of students that just weren't feeling it, and it was purely because their parents were pushing them into it. If it becomes apparent at an early stage that a child has no interest in a particular hobby, it's up to the parents to figure out what their interests are, and encourage them in the right direction. Great reaction, dude. I'm 45 now and I first saw this movie in my late 20s. It's one of my all time faves and I've seen it a million times. Personally I think it's aimed at adults just as much as kids, especially us adults that are still kids at heart.

Man, Jack Black is legitimately one of the coolest, most nice, down to Earth real one celebrities ever to have existed. The man is just a good human being. This movie is extremely good, largely because it's such a simple idea... and taps into the dreams we all had as kids. Wanting to be whatever it was and dreaming we really could. Before life got in the way for so many of us.
10000% yes to your question about us guitar players imagining a solo. Not always on the first listen but once you get in a groove you can literally hear it like you're playing.
I had a band many moons ago.. We did "communicate" like that sometimes (making noises of notes in inaginary instruments). My teacher "sang" along the notes (we use "Dó,Ré,Mi" instead of letters, but imagine something like.. "Ceeeee, Deeeee, Eeeeeee" being sang in its respective tones. (Yes, she knew by head how each note sounded).
Fun fact: the guy who played Ned is Mike White, a contestant on season 37 of Survivor. Also known as David Vs. Goliath, he was a runner-up on the show as well.
Cello is basically the bass form of violin. The tunings are different, but I cello is pretty similar to a stand-up bass. Also, the kids actually did know or learn their instruments. They did an anniversary reunion show back in 2013, where they all got together and performed a live show. It was pretty awesome, and they're all super talented.
I love this movie, it's not just the kids who learn and change for the better, it's Jack's character too. He learns responsibility and how to not spotlight hog, by making way for letting the kids take it when it's necessary too. I love even more that it was clearly a positive experience for them all in real life too.
As a songwriter and guitarist I absolutely love this movie. I haven’t seen this in a decade and I’m graduating college next year but I remember every line. So glad you watched this!
As someone who grew up on rock music, this movie IS amazing. The music, the kids, and just the overall story and message. If you're looking for another comedy music movie, I highly recommend the movie Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. It stars John C Riley as a musician but the way the movie is written and filmed it makes fun of all rock music sterotypes from about the 60's to about the 80's and I haven't seen a single reaction to it
36:11 I've met him in between shows of Tenacious D and he was genuinely one of the nicest people ever. He goes out of his way to treat everyone as if he was just an old friend. Never have heard a single bad thing about him ever before now, so I'm very curious as to where you heard that.
Saw Tenacious D last year at Blue Ridge Rock Fest. They do a whole tribute song to Roadies and named his whole crew from sound/lighting to guitar tech. Jack Black brought out his roadies to get an ovation. Seemed like a pretty gracious guy if you ask me but I never met him beyond the show.
Jack Black is a national treasure we need to protect this man at all costs! ❤ Also RIP Freddy Jones . Just found your channel and loving your reactions so far
I came here to say that about Kevin Clark. He was one of my biggest crushes after this movie came out lol so sad how he’s not here anymore, but he made a huge impact on a lot of people’s lives through the power of his role in this movie 🤍
My Aunt runs a preschool in the UK and when Jack Black was filming Gullivers Travels he enrolled his kids there for a while and she couldn't speak highly enough about how down to earth they all were, seems like a really fun guy!
"I've heard Jack Black's kind of an asshole" Whoa, where on earth did you hear that?! I've only ever heard that he's a total sweetheart (a weird sweetheart, but still!). Did he say or do something asshole-ish at some point that I missed?
What I love about this movie is that Dewey is a true rock and roll fan who loves music because it can inspire, not because of the "street cred" that comes with being in a rock band. And because his passion is genuine, he gives the kids space to get inspired and find the things they love and are passionate about. It's a silly concept and a goofy movie, but it has real messages about how the education system's focus on "achieving" can stifle creativity and neglect students' individuality. It's the only "inspirational teacher" movie I can stomach, because as Dewey teaches the kids to follow their passion and be confident in themselves, they are teaching him what it means to be responsible for himself and others. Plus Jack Black is just a joy.
I've never once heard Jack Black is an Arsehole! Dunno where you got that from. He seems to be one of the few people in Hollywood who's actually sincere and himself and not fake. The fact most of this film was ad-libbed and the kids are so happy is, I think, a testament to that. Kids aren't stupid and they'll call out fakeness and bullshit whenever they see it but you can see these kids love him and often can't hold in their laughter and delight
This came out when my 2nd son was this age group, so it doesn't take me to my childhood it brings me to theirs. Movies were made so parents could enjoy them also. Loved your reaction. Enjoy
This movie (as stupid as it seems) means so much to me. I saw it for the first time when I was five when my parents were watching it. I obviously didn’t really understand what was going on or the raunchy jokes but I loved the premise and my parents had raised me on classic rock. As I got older I always came back to this movie and I’ve seen it hundreds of times. I can probably quote it backwards and forwards. The movie still gives me chills and It’s still my favorite. This movie (as a kid) made me feel like I was capable of anything I put my mind to, and led me on to listen to the music I listen to today and have the massive respect I have for rock in general. Thank you for giving it a watch. 🎸🎶
This movie was actually made specifically for jack black. And he says it’s the movie he is most proud of. Also the director really wanted a explain song in it so him and the whole cast begged Led Zeppelin to have one of their songs in the movie. Also he had a hand in all the songs and the song they ended up singing for the contest was written by a band he saw while working on the movie and he asked them if they could write a song for the movie and they wrote it in less than a day. Oh and the band is called the Mooney Suzuki
Yeah the kids are playing for real. A few years ago there was a reunion concert, all these kids as adults and jack black. Defs look it up, its a feel good time.
As a young musician of 21 who grew up watching this movie often, I feel it has an accurate creative energy when they are writing music. I feel this same vibe of bouncing off of each others ideas when I'm writing music with my best friend!
When I had the DVD, I watched all the behind the scenes as well as the movie with commentary from the kids and I love it so much! Some fun facts that people might not know are that the bigger kid who played the roadie (Gabe, I think) and the little blonde girl Marta are now actually married. Also, Joey Gaydos Jr., who played Zack is a real prodigy whose dad was a famous musician, so when Jack Black was “teaching him” how to play guitar in the movie, he was actually better than they wanted, so they made him dumb it down to look like a kid who was actually learning. Also, Rest in Peace to Kevin Clark, who played Freddie. He was one of my biggest crushes and it’s so unfortunate what happened to him 😞 Thank you for appreciating this movie for what it is because I know it might be hard to relate to it as much as those of us who grew up with it, but I’m glad to see that it still put a smile on your face and you could feel how happy the kids got once they weee able to express themselves more freely. That’s what it’s all about🤍
That scene where Robert Tsai (cant remember his character's name) said he wasnt cool enough for the band was actually added to the movie because he really went to Richard Linklater and said he wasn't cool enough to be in the movie. Linklater told him his insecurity about being in the movie was exactly why he was perfect for the role. ❤
One of the moments is when he asks about the reasons to form a band with answers like getting wasted, chicks, or the suggestion for the groups name. The logical thing is to watch after this is "This Is Spinal Tap !" or Spïnal Täp
This was the first movie with that song or band in it. It is said that they only accepted their song being played in the movie because Jack Black and the crew asked with such passion
For those of us that play guitar, and solo in rock, yes, it’s often in our head already in some way. But a whole lot of the time it just sort of happens. And hope it’s recording ‘cause it might not come back again.
Even though she didn't get a bass solo, when I saw Tenacious D live in Chicago she was there. Jack Black mentioned her and had the whole place cheer for her and the shined a spotlight on the box she was in. It isn't a solo, but a great conciliation prize I guess. I would love to have The D call me out then have a few thousand people genuinely cheer for me.
Dude, back in my day we had a young male gym teacher (who knew no french) teach our advanced french class (3rd year). This was more believable than you could imagine believe back in those days. He'd hang out with all the jocks and teenage girls who crushed on him while calling the class an open period to do whatever we wanted as long as we didn't leave the classroom or attract the VPs/Principal's attention. It was wayyyy out of hand back then. It was like a bad episode of Saved By the Bell but it was our life, unfortunately.
9:30 I actually know of classically trained people looking down on anything that is not their cup of tea. From classical theater people who think popular plays are "plastic and commercial", to opera singers who think pop music is a waste, to musicians who think the electric guitar is the worst thing that ever happened to music. The best Mexican singer from the 20th century, José José, started his career in hiding because his father who was an opera singer would not allow anything but classical music in his house. (He still wanted to honor his father legacy, so although for his artistic name he was not using his last name, still used his father's name who was also José, that's why his artistic name is that, it's his and his father's name). I understand for years although José José was loved and admired by all Latin America, he was not in speaking terms with his father because he was singing something other than opera. So yes, there is people like that.
Okay so literally two weeks ago I was looking for reactions to this movie and there was almost none, now this week you’re the third reaction channel that I watch that’s reacting to it lmfao. Excited for you to watch all the way for the first time!
There's kids here who play instruments, orchestrate events, manage responsibilities, design clothes, and all get along and work together as a cohesive unit. AKA teacher taught these kids marketable skills. They're probably the only students there who could walk out of school and make money off the bat
I was also quite irritated the bass solo didn't happen, but that's due to the fact I play bass. Also you didn't catch that "No Vacancy" was Jack Blacks original band that kicked him out in the beginning.
I'm 29 and saw this back when it first came out. My dad was a big Rock and Metal fan, so my brother and I were always jamming to Zeppelin and AC/DC. Now all these years later I'm a teacher and my students call me Mr. S... It's such a trip to look back at this now!
32:58 I think you're misunderstanding something. the school didn't just start dialing random numbers hoping to find a teacher. the real Ned is a certified substitute teacher. the school has his resume. all his qualifications. the resume didn't have a photo attached. the principal called a known substitute teacher on their list and had that teacher come in to sub.
Since you are from Texas, it might interest you that Spider is played by Lucas Babin, who was elected as the District Attorney of Tyler County, where he serves to this day. He apparently has his eye on a Congressional seat, but this was quite surprising when I found this out.
i havent watched this movie in probably 10+ years and i can still remember all the words to the songs lol, i used to watch this movie on repeat as a kid
Alex would not have been able to appreciate this movie fully, if it weren’t for his former education in Rock N’ Roll music through his reaction channel. It’s pretty cool how everything comes together after such a long journey and then the payoff that follows is not only rewarding but legit entertaining.
where did you hear that jack black is an asshole?! i've literally never once even heard a hint of such a rumor, like ever. i've only ever heard good things about his personality and attitude
I was 22 when I watched this for the first time, I absolutely loved it and I still do. I can't even imagine the extra nostalgia effect it'd have if I had watched it when I was younger.
Can you imagine Alex's new show: "come with me on my first day at a weird job: Starbucks" "Alex's first" ahahaha Edit: 20:17 He put's cream on his hand. -Home remedy- When you get a mild burn (hot water, hot milk, etc) you can apply heavy cream on the wound to help it heal and it will help cool down the wound and you. If no cream available, milk also works as peeled onion (remoce the outer layer, slice onion and apply to wound) Still visit a doctor for proper treatment :P
Parents need to appreciate the beautiful, unique, amazing traits your kids have!! This is from a parent who many musicians call "Mom". Because I want to supprot and love them, and my adult daughter opened the door
There is an actual School of Rock after school program. Nationwide. They can take songs I never liked and make them sound good. Some of those kids are very talented.
I watched School of Rock live at the Hippodrome in Birmingham (UK) and it was amazing seeing the little ones playing their instruments and really getting into it. Makes such a good musical :)
you absolutely NEED to see the reunion concert.... sadly the actor playing Freddy (Kevin Clark) passed away after being struck by a car while riding a bike. The reunion concert hits hard in multiple ways.
All the kids are actually playing except the base player, which is why she wasn't featured with a solo during the credits. The behind the scenes are pretty cool and show how talented all the kids are.
@@vitokorunic3761 a base guitar is similar to a standard guitar. Some differences include being tuned to a lower octave and only having 4 strings. So a “base player” is just someone who plays a base guitar. ✌️🎃

The school head mistress is Joan Cusack, as in John’s sister. They are often in movies together, going back to 16 Candles even. Two of my favorites are the 80s classic Say Anything, which was John’s last role playing a teen. And Grosse Pointe Blank, a dark hit man comedy where she plays his assistant. Then, Jack Black and John Cusack played together in High Fidelity.

I bought this movie and showed it to my kids (12 and 9)... You hit the nail on the head about it hitting different for kids... Their interest in music just exploded. Definitely holds up 🤘
Yes. This movie came out right about the time Guitar Hero was happening. Totally turned my kids into little rockers. 🤘
The guy that played Zack got arrested 4x in 5 weeks for stealing guitars. True embodiment of “not hardcore unless you live hardcore” 😂
Bruhhhh wth
This is my first time back in a few months. You dont know me, but your content got me through the worst mental health I've ever struggled with. Stay pure. Much love.❤

❤❤❤
@fosstheboss31 glad to have you back with the family and a bit more settled within yourself honey. I also am just returning recently, so yeah I get it. Sending you much love and many hugs. 😉💜😎 #NYGenXBIKERLady
Rest in peace to the kid that played drums❤
Also lead guitarist got arrested a couple years ago for stealing a guitar😂
Yeah that was really sad. Going out like that from some kid running you over with their car.
omg i didn't expect this, IT'S MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!! thank you for reacting to it, alex, i truly appreciate your hard work!
I would also add from a drum perspective that it becomes a literal form of communication😂
Yes!! He also wrote this movie! 🙌
He was also one of the producers or directors of School of Rock as well :)
@@ChelseaSmiles40li69 yup! I remember watching the season and him mentioning it. It made me root for him less though (in the season).
He also was the creator of the HBO show White Lotus, which he won lots of awards.
@@ChelseaSmiles40li69 I think Richard Linklater directed School of Rock....
Jack black ain’t never been an asshole. He’s always been so kind to every co-star especially to his child stars
This movie is perfect. This choice was perfect. Jack Black's Magnum Opus is life changing
Yes, Jack Black has said this is the movie that he is the most proud of.
This movie is an 11/10 but Tenacious D POD is God Tier for me.
This is my Favorite movie probably.
It’s hard to pick but this is definitely top 3.
Takes me back. 🤙
Seemed like a pretty gracious guy if you ask me but I never met him beyond the show.
everything about the movie is real, that the musician kids really do play their instruments and the singers are singers
Ned was played by Mike White, the writer of the movie. He’s behind the show White Lotus, and was on Survivor and the Amazing Race. Love that guy
My Aunt runs a preschool in the UK and when Jack Black was filming Gullivers Travels he enrolled his kids there for a while and she couldn't speak highly enough about how down to earth they all were, seems like a really fun guy!
Yes, they were actually playing. The guy who played Zach actually taught Jack Black how to play those two songs Mr S tried to teach Zach in the movie
"Why has my daughter become obsessed with David Geffen?" made me laugh out loud!
😂😂😂😂
"I've heard Jack Black's kind of an asshole" Whoa, where on earth did you hear that?! I've only ever heard that he's a total sweetheart (a weird sweetheart, but still!). Did he say or do something asshole-ish at some point that I missed?
Right? I’ve never heard anything about him, except that he’s totally cool.
Jack Black is the funny badass we all need. What I love him the most for is the Kung Fu Panda movies. The fourth film is in production.
Jack Black is so incredibly talented and yes, the kids in this movie were playing the instruments. And a kick ass soundtrack to boot.
This film is an underrated classic glad your reacting to it.
35.20 Nah, those aren't the cigarette van guys, its Dewey's band from the beginning. "Spider" is the jackass in the leather sleeves XD
I have never once heard of anyone saying Jack Black was an asshole lol. Never heard anything but good things about him
Yeah, it gave me whiplash when I heard him say that lmao
I've never heard anyone refer to Jack Black as 'an asshole'. The exact opposite actually. He's got a great reputation.
I’m twelve I play guitar, and this movie is my absolute jam
Especially as a rock loving kid this hit different
I grew up with classic rock so it warms my soul to see Dewey bring passion to teaching the kid's potential this way.
Jack and the kids had a reunion a few years back and they performed the song again. It was so heartwarming to watch
I’m sorry to do this to you, but it was a 10 year reunion. Which means it was almost 10 years ago. 😬
@@Makawav wow 10 years. I'm so old
@@PhoenixRayneRock lol. Like I said, I’m sorry. I felt it too.
I gotta watch that now
They're doing the 20 year reunion soon.
I was also quite irritated the bass solo didn't happen, but that's due to the fact I play bass. Also you didn't catch that "No Vacancy" was Jack Blacks original band that kicked him out in the beginning.
Now you need to see the School Of Rock musical with Alex Brightman. Ugh sooo good!
Rock + Jack Black + kids = gold! Such a great movie regardless if this is a kids movie or not. The classic rock in this movie is amazing.
I'm 29 and saw this back when it first came out. My dad was a big Rock and Metal fan, so my brother and I were always jamming to Zeppelin and AC/DC. Now all these years later I'm a teacher and my students call me Mr. S... It's such a trip to look back at this now!
My kids had me watching this movie once a week... it's GREAT tho! 💚
i can recite every dialogue in this movie up to this day since its release in the theaters. the way ive wtched this on dvd for hundred times 😭
I love how you're not opposed to crossing lines with your comedy, keep it up dude this channel f*cking rules lmao
The bass solo actually got cut but she says in the commentary that she actually had a solo
This was my childhood movie, it introduced me to rock and metal bands. I’ve rewatched this like 7 times already lmao
32:58 I think you're misunderstanding something. the school didn't just start dialing random
numbers hoping to find a teacher. the real Ned is a certified substitute teacher. the school has
his resume. all his qualifications. the resume didn't have a photo attached. the principal called
a known substitute teacher on their list and had that teacher come in to sub.
Your “DO YOU WANT A HUG?!” caught me so off guard & made me laugh so loud! 😂😂😂
Since you are from Texas, it might interest you that Spider is played by Lucas Babin, who was elected as the District Attorney of Tyler County, where he serves to this day. He apparently has his eye on a Congressional seat, but this was quite surprising when I found this out.
I remember the hype when this film when it came out, the teachers at school kept playing it no movie days so I guess they liked it too XD
i havent watched this movie in probably 10+ years and i can still remember all the words to the songs lol, i used to watch this movie on repeat as a kid
Alex would not have been able to appreciate this movie fully, if it weren’t for his former education in Rock N’ Roll music through his reaction channel.
It’s pretty cool how everything comes together after such a long journey and then the payoff that follows is not only rewarding but legit entertaining.
RIP to the actor that played Freddie Jones, his name was Kevin Clark. He was a drummer in the Chicago music scene in a kickass band called Dread Wolf
where did you hear that jack black is an asshole?! i've literally never once even heard a hint of such a rumor, like ever. i've only ever heard good things about his personality and attitude
Fun fact: This was one of my go-to movies during my teens when I played video games. I've seen this movie at least 200 times.
I think i actually Squeed when i read you were checking this out, what a GREAT combo! Made my day, you rock!!
I was 22 when I watched this for the first time, I absolutely loved it and I still do. I can't even imagine the extra nostalgia effect it'd have if I had watched it when I was younger.
Can you imagine Alex's new show: "come with me on my first day at a weird job: Starbucks" "Alex's first" ahahaha
Edit: 20:17 He put's cream on his hand. -Home remedy- When you get a mild burn (hot water, hot milk, etc) you can apply heavy cream on the wound to help it heal and it will help cool down the wound and you. If no cream available, milk also works as peeled onion (remoce the outer layer, slice onion and apply to wound)
Still visit a doctor for proper treatment :P
Parents need to appreciate the beautiful, unique, amazing traits your kids have!! This is from a parent who many musicians call "Mom". Because I want to supprot and love them, and my adult daughter opened the door
I haven't started yet and I already know I'm going to love this reaction
"I've never seen Kung Fu Panda"
You... fucking... what?? Dude, get on it, absolutely fantastic movies
There is an actual School of Rock after school program. Nationwide. They can take songs I never liked and make them sound good. Some of those kids are very talented.
32:01 I said the same thing when Dewey had the wrong choice of words
Yoo another great movie choice! You're killing it Alex :)
I watched School of Rock live at the Hippodrome in Birmingham (UK) and it was amazing seeing the little ones playing their instruments and really getting into it. Makes such a good musical :)
Such a hilarious and entertaining film. A classic.
you absolutely NEED to see the reunion concert.... sadly the actor playing Freddy (Kevin Clark) passed away after being struck by a car while riding a bike. The reunion concert hits hard in multiple ways.
All the kids are actually playing except the base player, which is why she wasn't featured with a solo during the credits. The behind the scenes are pretty cool and show how talented all the kids are.
What's a "base" player?
@@vitokorunic3761 a base guitar is similar to a standard guitar. Some differences include being tuned to a lower octave and only having 4 strings. So a “base player” is just someone who plays a base guitar. ✌️🎃

"Shallow Hal" was filmed in my city. A crew member of mine was Jason Alexander's personal assistant while he was here. Great movie!
Don't worry the bassist got her solo at the reunion
The school head mistress is Joan Cusack, as in John’s sister. They are often in movies together, going back to 16 Candles even. Two of my favorites are the 80s classic Say Anything, which was John’s last role playing a teen. And Grosse Pointe Blank, a dark hit man comedy where she plays his assistant. Then, Jack Black and John Cusack played together in High Fidelity.
Grosse Point Blank is fantastic
They guy who played Spider (the guy in the small shirt) is now the district attorney of Tyler County, Texas lol
Yes Alex! Drake and Josh was my favourite show as a kid 🤟 loved Zoey 101 too 😊
My boyfriend and I still watch Drake & Josh as a comfort show when we wanna relax or even during dinner sometimes lol
