The only difference is that you usually aren't consciously aware of or don't think about the things that are unrealistic. Say what you will about the cheesiness of this movie but it holds such a special place in my heart. I entirely blame these movies for my love of puzzle games where just to do one task you’ve got to complete like five other things and gather items at like the beginning of the game that you end up not using until the very end because it’s the key to the final puzzle.
The pipe in the beginning of the movie is called a Meerschaum pipe. They were extremely expensive, as they were mainly made of expensive materials and EXTREMELY detailed, enough that it might take months, or over a year (back prior to the age of small electric engraving tools like we have Dremels) to make them without breaking off the thinner pieces.
My favorite Nick Cage movie is a tie between Gone in 60 Seconds and Con Air. I just can't choose between them. And honestly those are my two favorite movies period.
I'm from the Caribbean, there's plenty of opportunities to go treasure hunting. There are historical pirate maps, unexplored caves and sunken ships. The main thing deterring me from being a treasure hunter was spiders. Old shit is always covered in spiders. And dust, my asthma and dust is a no no.
Bro one of your best/funniest reactions to date. It was so dumb and I loved every bit of it! Also the scene where gates is geeking out over the declaration being back in the room where it was signed is something a lot of us history lovers relate to:connecting to the past.
OMG yes! I'm a civil war reenactor (my prof pic is actually me in my dance dress) and the connections between modern day and that history is one of my happy places.
Can't explain the joy I felt when I saw the thumb nail of you reacting to national treasure!! One of my favorites! Can you do the second one? They are also going to come out with the third!!
if he watches that one though he's also gotta see how to lose a guy in 10 days lol not a treasure movie but you can't have fools gold without how to lose a guy in ten days lol
The dad had a theory, that the legend was invented to keep the British occupied. But big hole in this theory. The British would know this giant pile of treasure had vanished recently. And if they didn’t know that, they would never believe it.
On those final thoughts, theres something about cheesy feel good movies being just that! They don't have to have the best plot or continuity or the best acting, they're just for fun. And this one is one of my all time faves for those reasons! Yes things just work out and yes the bad guys can't hit shots (like in any Hollywood movie ever!) but at the end of the day, it's still a fun ride!
I get what you are saying about it being a "bad movie" but a movie that always makes me feel so good I will never call bad. Whenever I'm sick these are go to for me (or lord of the ring). Makes me a little happier.
yeah in the movie the amount of 10 billion was said. 1% is still a hundred million split in half between him and Riley we assume is 50 million each. But yeah I think the whole part of him refusing 10% is to show his character was a nice, good guy that was in it more for the history and clearing his family name than money.. But let's be real if this was today that would be around 80 million each. I'd take that in heartbeat, that's still massive life changing for generations.
Absolutely. That is enough to cover at least two (possibly three) generations of Doctoral (that's at least 12-16 years) college tuition, not needing to work, and retirement with a very hefty inheritance. I'd take it. But then again, I'd be like Riley, just taking the offer first given.
The treasure was worth 10 billion, so 10% would be a 1 billion, which is way too much for a humble dude. Instead he accepted half of 1%, so around 50 mil, which is plenty 😂😂
@teddyray9336 Actually, if they get it through the angle of compensation for "pain and suffering" it's tax free. After all, he was almost killed and thrown in prison while trying to do a national duty.
The pyramids could be made by hand, and they were made by hand. They just spent a long time building it. We're kinda limited in how long we can spend building a building, but they could just go on building the same thing for a hundred years.
I'd like to recommend the Maze Runner trilogy, if it's something you'd be interested in reacting to. It's a classic dystopian set of movies that are just so incredible to get immersed into. Easily my favourite movies!
Fun fact: the outdoor parts of the 'artic circle' scene near the beginning was filmed at strawberry reservoir in Utah during winter. The crew had to clean up every scrap from the explosion so it didnt end up in the lake when the snow melted.
When you talk about killing people in a Disney movie, the high kill count in “The Three Musketeers” (1993) comes to mind. Good movie, you should give it a watch.
I love this movie! Sure, it's not Oscar worthy, but it's so much fun- like you said. I've watched it a couple of times. Always a few good laughs. Riley is great!
I love this, Book of Secrets, and the Lord of the Ring trilogy so much that when I'm feeling crappy or need a comfort sound to get to sleep, I'll put them on
Hope you do the sequel. I love what it says about Riley's character that in the last scene he's wearing a fancy suit because he's all rich now, but he's still wearing baggy jeans.
This is the kind of movie that needs to be made nowadays. There is some humor in it, but it is not a comedy. It has a heart, and a sense of adventure. It has action and suspending moments, but it isn't gory or scary, so even kids could see it. It is original idea, but feel familiar at the same time. It dared to be wholly what it supposed to be, a cheesy adventure flick, without any self deprecating meta humor or winks to the camera. It is something that would never get green lit in modern Hollywood, which is a shame.
This is my fav Nick Cage movie and one of my fav movies as I’m a history nut. Riley really isn’t given enough credit when he is pretty smart and helpful.
Alexandria scrolls would be my downfall. To leave knowledge from that time period, it could shed so much light on history that is shrouded in myths and legends, or just forgotten altogether.
Wow Alex, dude...this movie is- FUN, plus you have moments of real History info within it! Plus, the fact that it's an Adventure that takes place in America. No need to go to 10 Countries to sort things out. Not that I don't enjoy one that does at times. I've seen this movie over the years a few times, I enjoy they have to figure out clues to get the Reward. 😊 The blond British dude, Ian was played by - Sean Bean, well known for having been in- Lord of the Rings, and later as Ned Stark, of Winterfell in GOTs!
That moment at 26:04 when Nic pulls the glove off with his teeth and it is just a big middle finger to his dad for breaking the news that he no longer has the Silence Dogood letters. 🤣

I love this movie. Yes, it is cheesy and totally unrealistic but it's a fun ride! As a history buff, I loved all the historical tidbits. For the record, the fates of the 56 men who signed the DOI was just as horrific as Ben listed at @ 15:20. Five of them were imprisoned and tortured to death. Some died from wounds during the Revolutionary War. Two had their sons held as ransom during the war. Two others had their sons die during the war. Quite a few had their homes pillaged and burned to the ground. Many had to take their family and go in to hiding. One, John Hart, was driven from his dying wife's bedside and forced to flee. His children had to flee also. He had to live in the woods for a year and never saw his children again. Another signer's wife was imprisoned and tortured to death. She died after a few months. Prior to the war, most of them were merchants, lawyers and land owners and the majority would die in poverty. We remember the ones who became presidents and statesmen but the majority paid heavily for signing the DOI. They really did pledge everything and now, 247 years afterward, we have this great movie to watch. Seems like a good trade off! :)
Did you know that not all the signatures were placed on the DOI until August 2nd? The portrait of all the signers in Independence Hall was a fiction by the artist, wanting to make a grandiose piece of art. In truth, the signers got to it whenever they stopped in Philadelphia. So the last to sign it, Charles Carroll (yes, he was real, not just a fictional character for the movie benefit) didn't sign the DOI until he arrived in Philadelphia on August 2nd, 1776. And another little tidbit; there were two reasons why John Hancock's signature is so huge. 1: he was the first to sign it, so he had a ton of space, 2: he was a very bold and ostentatious man, he wanted his signature to be big and able to be read by any and everybody.
One of favourite ever movies. The main reason I became interested in History. I never cared at all until I realised that so many important things have happened thanks to this. Plus I think being the Know-it-all in the room is fun. BTW that’s Ned Stark, so he ain’t wish Jamie Lannister.
Turns out the REAL National Treasure was Nic Cage himself. The movie may suck and be cheesy as all hell but if it's got Nic Cage you'll watch it and have a good time regardless. As for my fave NC movie? I'd have to go with "Gone In 60 Seconds", would love to see you react to that at some point.
Garbage? How dare you even suggesting it could be garbage! It is damn a cool series that deserves a sequel for THAT page! (you'll know when you watch the 2nd movie)
The pyramids were made by a pully system they found spiraling inside of the walls kinda like a tunnel. There's a documentary on the guy who figured it out and he had to jump thru hoops to break down a wall. When they did they found the pully system. It super dope
So happy you are finally putting this movie on your roster. The show that they made as a follow up to the two movies is amazing and I recommend watching it after finishing the second movie. So amazing
I've been hearing more and more about a third one that centers around Been and Abigail's daughter being the next Gates treasure hunter. She's supposedly insanely amazing at puzzles like Ben, but has the sensibilities of Abigail
I honestly loved this movie. History is a passion of mine, and this goes back to a time where people made movies for the intent of entertaining people with a good story; not forsake that story with woke propaganda and then spit on potential ticket buyers before the movie is even released. EDIT: To answer your question about the pyramids being man made, yes they were. It would take roughly fifteen or thirty years to construct one, and it would thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of slaves to build them. Egypt did have a system for measurement and calculation along with vast materials to build primitive cranes and pulleys. Remember, they considered the pharaohs to be gods in human form, so no expense was spared when it came to building their tombs.
It’s a simple movie, yet it contains a great combination to make it really interesting to watch and enjoy. I’ve always loved the National Treasure movies because of the history, plans, and of course, characters with a bit of charm and comedy. Definitely some of the best movies that are fairly old. They are especially good now that Disney has been putting more nails into their coffin almost every movie now.
I visited the national archives in DC last year and was PLEASANTLY surprised to see their gift shop with national treasure paraphernalia (including a Declaration of Independence with a secret code using a black light on the back - which I definitely bought). They also had the Silence Dogood letters which I was very tempted to buy. I freaking love this movie (and the second one).

National treasure is literally a national treasure lol it’s the perfect way to describe it. Good story, fun characters, always a good time.
If you’re doing older movies, like this, I would suggest and the Sorcerers Apprentice. It’s one of my favorite childhood movies with Nicolas Cage!
I love the journey of inspiration for that movie.
I love this one, I remember when I was in cinema on it ahh 😁
I was looking for this
Oh damn yeah that one’s really good
Nicholas Cage getting to live out his Harry Dresden cosplay and I love it
My favorite line is:
Riley: What do you do with them?
Ben Gates (Nicholas Cage being Nicholas Cage): YOU LOOK THROUGH THEM!!!!!
Have you played Myst and its sequels? Brilliant puzzle games from the 90s that recently got VR releases. I highly recommend them!
Actually one of my favourites, i hope you will do the second one aswell. And i hope you liked this one. Good work 👍
My favorite Nick Cage movie is a tie between Gone in 60 Seconds and Con Air. I just can't choose between them. And honestly those are my two favorite movies period.
I REALLY liked this movie as a kid and I still do
Same ❤
I'm from the Caribbean, there's plenty of opportunities to go treasure hunting. There are historical pirate maps, unexplored caves and sunken ships. The main thing deterring me from being a treasure hunter was spiders. Old shit is always covered in spiders. And dust, my asthma and dust is a no no.
This should be the top comment 😂
Gone in 60 seconds is a great Nick Cage movie. Also, Con Air.
"How does it make you like that excited?" Its called Patriotism and a real love for history and your families history.
That concept is so lost on people these days, it's sad
The nostalgia this movie holds
Bro one of your best/funniest reactions to date. It was so dumb and I loved every bit of it!
Also the scene where gates is geeking out over the declaration being back in the room where it was signed is something a lot of us history lovers relate to:connecting to the past.
OMG yes! I'm a civil war reenactor (my prof pic is actually me in my dance dress) and the connections between modern day and that history is one of my happy places.
After growing up I've realized that Nicolas Gage was the real treasure all along.
Can't explain the joy I felt when I saw the thumb nail of you reacting to national treasure!! One of my favorites! Can you do the second one? They are also going to come out with the third!!
Im sure you're planning on watching the sequel. Another feel good treasure movie is Fools Gold with Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson.
Yes!!! Love Fool's Gold❤
if he watches that one though he's also gotta see how to lose a guy in 10 days lol not a treasure movie but you can't have fools gold without how to lose a guy in ten days lol
I love this fun movie. This and “Sahara” are both fun historical action films…while being less than historically accurate 😂
One of the few roles where Sean Bean's character didn't die 😅
Got arrested though
The dad had a theory, that the legend was invented to keep the British occupied.
But big hole in this theory. The British would know this giant pile of treasure had vanished recently. And if they didn’t know that, they would never believe it.
I laughed out loud when you said that one guy looks like a wish Jaime Lannister, when that is Ned Stark
Yeah, it's campy, but it's not poorly constructed. It accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do.
The dad is played by Jon Voight, who’s Angelina Jolie’s dad and plays her dad in the Tomb Raider films. They re worth a watch too
yeah in the movie the amount of 10 billion was said.
Actually my favorite movie. I love history, I love treasure hunting, and I love Nic Cage, put it all together and you make the best thing ever for me.
The treasure was worth 10 billion, so 10% would be a 1 billion, which is way too much for a humble dude. Instead he accepted half of 1%, so around 50 mil, which is plenty 😂😂
50 mil is no joke😭
@teddyray9336 Not even that much money in the world when treasure comes into the equation lol. With 50 mill, you could buy out the IRS lol.
*Alex left the chat at the 1 billion part
@teddyray9336 Actually, if they get it through the angle of compensation for "pain and suffering" it's tax free. After all, he was almost killed and thrown in prison while trying to do a national duty.
@@xejelah i suffer everyday in my 9 to 5 job, can i go tax free too?
National Treasure Part 2 is also very entertaining and the Sorcerer's Apprentice.
When you talk about killing people in a Disney movie, the high kill count in “The Three Musketeers” (1993) comes to mind. Good movie, you should give it a watch.
I love national treasure, it’s a bit silly but when it came out I was the age where it all felt so realistic, and the music is fire
I love this movie! Sure, it's not Oscar worthy, but it's so much fun- like you said. I've watched it a couple of times. Always a few good laughs. Riley is great!
I love this, Book of Secrets, and the Lord of the Ring trilogy so much that when I'm feeling crappy or need a comfort sound to get to sleep, I'll put them on
A little cheesy, sure, but fun. And I don't care who you are, that treasure room reveal with that music is great.
Hope you do the sequel.
I love what it says about Riley's character that in the last scene he's wearing a fancy suit because he's all rich now, but he's still wearing baggy jeans.
The audacity to compare Ned Stark to Jaimie Lanister 😂😂
and he doesn't die in this one
This is the kind of movie that needs to be made nowadays. There is some humor in it, but it is not a comedy. It has a heart, and a sense of adventure. It has action and suspending moments, but it isn't gory or scary, so even kids could see it. It is original idea, but feel familiar at the same time. It dared to be wholly what it supposed to be, a cheesy adventure flick, without any self deprecating meta humor or winks to the camera. It is something that would never get green lit in modern Hollywood, which is a shame.
I love both of them. They are fun, can't ask for more than that.
And... the digital camera story explains so much about his behavior...
This is a feel good movie for me. The Da Vinci Code and the 2 sequels would be pretty rad to see.
This is my fav Nick Cage movie and one of my fav movies as I’m a history nut. Riley really isn’t given enough credit when he is pretty smart and helpful.
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid, it’s probably the reason I grew to love history so much.
Can you just imagine finding old armors from the King Arthur era, Alexandria scrolls, egyptians sarcophagus... Good Lord, I would cry.
Alexandria scrolls would be my downfall. To leave knowledge from that time period, it could shed so much light on history that is shrouded in myths and legends, or just forgotten altogether.
Kind of funny Alex. You mentioned Jamie Lannister and you missed it by a Ned Stark. When did you figure out this tidbit of the actor?
19:36 Alex you are too funny my man 😂
Wow Alex, dude...this movie is- FUN, plus you have moments of real History info within it!
My favorite Nic Cage movie is probably a three-way tie between this one, Next, and Gone in 60 Seconds.
Love this movie, hope you'll watch the second one as well! It's such a shame they never made a third one.
That moment at 26:04 when Nic pulls the glove off with his teeth and it is just a big middle finger to his dad for breaking the news that he no longer has the Silence Dogood letters. 🤣
yes, Alex...believe it or not, there is such a thing as 'too much money' for one person, or even two or more!
Especially a super humble person that wasn't looking for money. Been was looking to bring the thousands of years of history back into the world for people to learn from
Movies like this are what they are: pure entertainment. Whether it makes sense entirely or not, it's just fun. Movies aren't like that as much as they used to be, and they need to get back to that.
It's Amazing not garbage. I never fail to watch some of it when I stumble across it on TV. I am surprised you even asked the ❓ Compared to some of the Marvel movies you watched over the past few months especially the newer ones 💩this movie is a 🤬 masterpiece 😳
That was the most high tech cellphone when this was recorded sir, this was filmed in 2003 and released in 2004. Twenty years ago, this was all high tech 😂.
Now you’ve got to watch the 2nd one!! It’s surprisingly great too. I know that they are a little far fetched but they are just so much fun 😊 I hope they do a 3rd and final one yet…
They're supposed to have a 3rd one that showcases Ben and Abigail's daughter as the next treasure hunter of the family.
Now I just need him to watch 2008 speed racer
And gone in 60 seconds 😂😂
"This creepy Eastern European dude"... he's English, Sean Bean is English.
My favourite Nick Cage films are Con air and Kick ass
One of favourite ever movies. The main reason I became interested in History. I never cared at all until I realised that so many important things have happened thanks to this. Plus I think being the Know-it-all in the room is fun. BTW that’s Ned Stark, so he ain’t wish Jamie Lannister.
Dude the cinematography in this movie is TOP NOTCH and I will fight ANYONE who says otherwise
This film proves that nonsense can still be fun and entertaining. I really like this movie =)
The pyramids were made by a pully system they found spiraling inside of the walls kinda like a tunnel. There's a documentary on the guy who figured it out and he had to jump thru hoops to break down a wall. When they did they found the pully system. It super dope
Love this one! The story concept for the second one was good too, but the villain was poorly written.
what kind of vibe does 'Treasure Hunter' give off. Someone who doesn't want to admit they are a grave robber
So happy you are finally putting this movie on your roster. The show that they made as a follow up to the two movies is amazing and I recommend watching it after finishing the second movie. So amazing
I’m sorry what?! I did not know that there was a show created from this! I am so glad I read this comment!
Ned stark really went straight after this debacle. Love the flick tho. Anabelle is gorgeous
Well, if my friend said they were a treasure hunter, I’d find it 100% cooler than being a UA-cam reactor, so there’s that. Lmao
Damn. You still watched it though lol.
Love these movies. I wish they would have made a part 3.
Yes. This. I was hoping someone would have explained the whole pyramids thing.
'I don't know why I do the things I do'. Well the comment about finding the video tape of your parents gives us some insight into that. LOL
An absolutely insane premise, taken just seriously enough to get us invested, with great characters.
"What happens if you're almost there" ... I like to think of it as that we're already there, all the time.
One of my all time favorites! Great movie!!
Guy contemplating on the bench was thinking "was her leaving me, the worst thing.......?"
39:07 that's hilarious that you called out the ending like that. 😂😂😂 Had me dying. Great video 👍
2:50 Present! 🙋🏾♀️ 🤣🤣🤣
Both, actually. It has a very memorable soundtrack I still hum sometimes. And some of the ideas were cool.
31:35 how does it make them that excited? Would you not be excited bringing a historical document that founded our country and freedom to the place it originated?
It's like stepping back in time
