@@Salomon_G Thinking about the songs in the context of James's life, I'd say this one can be connected to his time in rehab in 2001/2, as it's about him facing himself and dealing with his own personal issues.

Hetfield grew up with parents who were Christian scientists and it was forced on him and his siblings leading to a lot of conflict. His dad walked out on them when James was 13. He didn’t even leave a note or letter. Then his mum passed away when he was 16 because she refused treatment for her illness due to their beliefs that god will heal her. Therefor he was a pissed off young man which you can understand why. He wrote his feelings towards his religion in the song “The God that Failed” on the black album. (Which you should do as it’s terrifically written). After he got sober in 2003 he said he found god again, but not necessarily a Christian or abrahamic god. More of a guardian angel or god that he has his own relationship with. Sorry for waffling on but I hope this sheds some light on his background.

I feel like the unforgiven series of songs are very personal to James Hetfield. It seems like he laid his soul out for all to see with these songs. He wrote them at the different phases of his life, that seem to match his personal story. It takes a brave person to bare their soul in this way. I also think that there is definitely a connection with the church in all the music.
I really enjoyed that you reviewed all three of these songs. I routinely listen to all three consecutively. Through music, we can always take what we need from it.

As a metal head that didn't take Christ seriously until I was a married adult, it is awesome to find someone actually giving the music I love a chance from our family. Most of the time when I pull into the parking lot at church blaring this style I just get either disgusted grimaces or curious glances and not many want to know what it was. for you make me remember the things me and my family went/are going through.

All that talk about being lost around 16-18 minutes reminds me of an old Mitch Hedberg line: "If i ever get lost in the woods, i'll build a cabin.... I used to be lost, but now i live here", or something close to that.

  • @teebird6952

Someone on the comments for Unforgiven II nailed it. The first song is about the inability or unwillingness to forgive "them", the second is about "you", and this is about "me". Knowing Hetfield's past, the theme of forgiveness is clearly very personal to him.
Personally I grew up on the first two, but as I've gotten older, part 3 touches me the most, and feels far deeper lyrically, and is the one I listen to the most.
I'm oddly satisfied that you both liked it. Keep up the good work.

I have a very naive point of view. I believe in "us", you know, i believe in the great things our species could achieve if we put all of that negative stuff aside for at least one moment (xenophobia, racism, etc.), and realize that without unity there's no survival for us on this planet. Maybe one day right? xD

Thank you guys so much for your thoughtful reactions. This is exactly what makes UA-cam such a powerful platform. Thoughtful reactions that make people think. I have never really been a fan of digging into lyrics. I usually gauge my interest/fandom of a band purely on the instrumentation. I will negect ridiculous lyrics like say Cannibal Corpse or satanistic bands cause I just think they are going for the "shock" effect. I am not a religious person thou so I would do the same for Christian bands like say stryper. If I hear junk lyrics, I will completely disregard them. I do however find your religious commentary about these songs that I love very interesting.
Vin, do not give up on opeth! They are one of my favorite bands and they have a lot to offer. They are not everyone's "cup of tea" but, if you give them a chance, there's a lot to uncover. Blackwater Park and Still Life are thier best albumns IMO. Songs I'd like you to react to are, in no particular order:
    Demon of the fall
    Bleak
    Harvest
    Deliverance
    Hope leaves
    Isolation years
    The lotus eater
    Burden
    The devil's orchard
    Famine
    Sorceress
I'm also a huge fan of Gojira and am thirlled with your recent reactions to them. Please check out more from this amazing band. Reactions I'd like to see:
    Love
    Esoteric surgery
    Born in winter
    The shooting star
    The cell
Keep up the great work. I'm a recent subscriber and will be watching. Thanks again.

This song is something they would write with Cliff Burton.. has that Sanitarium type of arrangement, and reminiscent of that intro from Fight Fire with Fire.. you know, that classical vibe thingy. The Unforgiven 1 and 2 are something they would write without the Cliff influence.

Okay I had to post another comment about this review. I posted my last comment while you all were still actually talking about the Metallica song and then continued listening through the rest of the video where you all actually went off on the tangent of forgiveness. When you all make it to the point where you talked about separating institutional Christianity and God I was thrilled at the way that you are actually went about discussing that. I don't know if you all have really discussed that on other videos some of the videos that I've watched from you all I'll have to admit seems like they were getting a little long-winded and I would just go to the next video so I can see how you all were reacting about the next song. So now after hearing the rest of the conversation through this video I feel like I need to go back and watch all the others all over again. You all are amazing keep doing what you're doing.

For another "suite" of songs, you should check out The Four Seasons album by Wintersun. Four tracks, each one named for and inspired by the seasons. The darker side of the seasons, of course ;) The genre is an awesome blend of black metal, folk metal, and melodic death metal.

You guys should check out Love and Death or Brian 'Head' Welch's solo songs.
Specifically i recommend Chemicals or Save Me From Myself.

Enjoying your reactions. I think you would enjoy the lyricism of Dark Tranquillity. I recommend their song "of melancholy burning".

I just got back from vacation, so I'm a little late to this party... but it looks like you trusted me on Unforgiven III and it paid off. Maybe you'll trust me again? Try Metallica - Call of Ktulu, Low Man's Lyric, Fixxxer and All Nightmare Long

Hey guys, i'm new to your gig but i must say, i love it! I know that you get several requests for songs to react but e prefer the songs that you (Vin) don't know too. Check Halo On Fire, it's from Metallica's last album. For me, it's a beautiful peace of art. Keep it up, you guys are great. Awesome.

Personally I agree with you pal, 1, 3, 2 is my list. Next up - I think that some songs off of the “...And Justice For All” would be perfect for you, such as the song’s sake, And Justice For All, then also Harvester of Sorrow, One, Dyer’s Eve, To Live is to Die, and The Frayed Ends of Sanity

Off of a different album is the Black Album, that has some other gems including the first Unforgiven.. my personal faves are Sad But True, Wherever I May Roam, Don’t Tread on Me, and The God that Failed

If you can find the time, I'd love to hear your thoughts on "Orgasmatron" by Motorhead. I think the lyrics will spark off an interesting conversation.

Not a metal request, but can you do They'll Need A Crane by They Might Be Giants. After tonight that song perfectly encapsulates where I am, and it would mean a lot to me. It's a vaguely folky indie rock song.

As you are both Christian, I'd love to see you react to Mercyful Fate "The Oath" with lyrics. They are one of the very first Black Metal bands but opera style vocals from King Diamond.

1, 3, 2 for me too, but that may change over time. I find the 3rd Unforgiven more and more relatable as I get older. Tough to beat the first one though.

By the way, I am a die hard Metallica fan, and most of the ideas you picked out of the lyrics were done on purpose by James Hetfield. He might not be a lyricist in the traditional sense, but he is a very VERY deep dude. More of a poet I would say.

  • @TheRockpit

The Unforgiven series was not about exestential world type stuff, it's rooted deeply within singer James Hetfield's own head and his relationships with people and family, particularly his parents. The third song is post-rehab and how he has managed to deal with those relationships now with a new perspective on life

Did you know that there was a cult called the new dawn or a golden dawn? It was the cult of alister crawley, who had the theme " do which thou wilt and it shall be the whole of the law " ! I think he is speaking of that cult. He found himself in that cult? Maybe?

  • @outlaw_math
    @outlaw_math 6 років тому

Something that is pretty much straight forward and suits you guys very well it's Metallica's Moth Into Flame. Would be awesome to see your debate about the theme of that song. About the songs that have this story driving lyrics or theme, you guys should really react to something from Iron Maiden, they have lots of song just about that style of writing.
    I recommend:
    Hallowed be thy Name
    Run to the Hills
    The Trooper.
Also react to Motorhead's Brotherhood of Man when time comes to react to them. KEEP IT METAL!
