1989-1994 Metallica is quite possibly the most powerful live juggernaut of a band Earth will ever know.
Think of it this way...it takes NINE motherfuckers in Slipknot to get kinda near the energy of 4 dudes and they stillllll aren't even in the same realm.
FACT: Jason Newstead alone has the vitality of 5 Grown Men

James Hetfield gave an awesome interview to Joe Rogan on his podcast and they touched on this concert. Said the military folks thought people in the mosh pit were fighting, so the military started beating the kids with batons. He also mentioned the helicopters flew so low the people in the helos were smacking people with batons as well. Since I'm a huge fan, I listened to the entire podcast and it was great. The Russia concert part blew my mind. James also said that by the time the concert ended, the military guys were taking off their uniforms to join in on the head banging.

@FirstDragonSlayer Well, I personally like cliffs better and his vocal style. Jason yells while cliff growls. 1985-1986 is when cliff did vocals on creeping death and I think sounds more evil than Jason’s. And the part where it’s just Jason playing bass and Lars during the die part, on cliffs few last shows they did that before Jason and it was just Cliff and Lars

I love this song! It is easily the best song on Ride the Lightning and IMO much more deserving of the title track status, but what do I know. Creeping Death is beefy and powerful, the same kind of raw muscle heard in "Disposable Heroes" on Master of Puppets. That is saying a LOT. Also Creeping Death was released as a single prior to the full album release. This live performance is truly epic but TBH I kinda wish you had reacted to the studio recording because I am curious about your "WTF is this song about??" feature for this song. Definitely some Biblical / religious themes here... I think another youtube channel has a priest and his metalhead son reviewing metal songs with religious themes, including "The God That Failed" from the Black Album, and others. Check it out. Thanks for another great video! Love the energy bro!

You need to hear the studio version of this song to really hear and appreciate the articulation of the guitars,(without the crowd noise)as well as 'hear' the lyrics, it's so well written, pretty much unmatched. One of my faves. This song is Biblical, it's about the Hebrews leaving their enslavement to Egypt, due to the ten plagues imposed ('by God's will') "So let it be written, so let it be done". In the tenth and final plague the angel (creeping death) killed the first born son in every Egyptian household (even that of the Pharaoh) He 'passed over' the households with the "Blood, lamb blood painted door, I shall pass!"
(After the death of his son(the final straw) the Pharaoh basically said 'gtfo' and take whatever tf, just leave, so the Hebrews took a bunch of silver and gold // this is not part of the song, but it's part of the story) Anyways. Peace! and /,,/ !

@Ryder Winfrey No, I don't think Cliff was the best just because he was in the original lineup. I think that because he could make a bass sound like nobody else, wrote and performed solos that sounded like guitar solos, and he didn't use a pick like a little bitch like Jason. Jason couldn't play those old songs anywhere near as well as Cliff. Don't believe me? Watch the old live shows and see for yourself. Robert is the only one they could even find that could even come close to playing those old songs like Cliff when Jason left, and even James, Lars, and Kirk agreed that those songs hadn't been played so well since Cliff was alive. Memory serves, they said that playing with Robert during the auditions felt like they were playing with Cliff.
Jason sucks and was a whiney little bitch who left the biggest band in the world to do his own little side project, which was awful, all because they didn't want him in a second band taking his focus away from Metallica. I respect those guys for that. They weren't willing to compromise and potentially hurt Metallica and disappoint fans just to appease Jason's ego about performing his own shitty songs.

Yeah, this video is the quintessential definition of Metallica's authority on stage in front of a crowd. They proved at this show that they had the world by the balls, and I'd argue they still do today.

I'm 53 and a Metallica fan since 1984. I love your videos and your passion for music/lyrics Alex. I'm not writing this to win a shirt or anything, just want to say how much I enjoy your videos and make some recommendations. Here are some Metallica song you would probably like; "I Disappear," from the movie Mission Impossible 2 is one of my favorites. Others are, 'Sad But True" "King Nothing," "The Unforgiven," "Battery," "Nothing Else Matters was a huge hit when it came out," "Until It Sleeps," "Harvester of Sorrow," "Hero of the Day, underrated great song not exactly heavy metal," "No Leaf Clover with The San Francisco Symphony" "My Friend Of Misery, great solo," "The Thing That Should Not Be," and the instrumental "The Call of Cthulhu," both inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," and the instrumental "Orion'" Also,"Whiskey in a Jar, "a great cover of a song by Irish rock band Thin Lizzy, the video has as of now over 80 million views. In the song "Don't Tread On Me," I like the West Side Story "America" guitar riff in the beginning. Metallica has so many great songs this is really only just a sample. Thanks for making the videos.

yea brah, saw them in 1985 at a joint called the aragon ballroom in chicago. witnessed many many bands from the underground back then. celtic frost, slayer, exodus, destruction etc...... wouldn't change it for anything. stuck to floor from the spilt beer, smoke everywhere, toilets looked fucked up, waiting in a alley on and on. I play because of Black Sabbath, Zep, Exciter, Metallica and Frost.

I'm only 19, and I was actually introduced to rock and metal before I can remember, but Mr. Crowley by Ozzy was the first one I do remember. First Metallica song I remember actively listening to was Whiskey In The Jar. I was out at my Grandpa's shop, sitting in the back of a broken down, rusty truck he was gonna work on, drinking a Sunkist and watching the sunset with him and my dad. I was six. That's probably the moment that defined me as a "metalhead".

80 years ago this month the Germans sent 4 million troops in to try and conquer Russia. They fought all through the winter and lost. 50 years later the USA sent Metallica and they did it in a day.

James Hetfield was master of all he surveyed from about 1989-1991. Strong contender during that period for greatest metal frontman ever.
Alex - obvious how much you enjoyed this. Check out "Blackened" from their 1989 Seattle show for more of the same but better (IMO).

Wasn't it like '92 or something, he blew it out touring for so long on The Black album? It was never quite the same again. He's better these days than he was like 10-15 years ago, but he's never been this amazing since that vocal injury.
