  • Update 3 Oct 18: I have replaced the valve cover gaskets with Victor Reinz part #'s 53658 and 53659 for left and right. I have paired these new, better gaskets with the cheap valve covers that I purchased from Amazon. The Amazon covers come with gaskets but the gasket included is poor quality and it began to leak after a few thousand miles. You can view the update video here: • Video
    Update 22Sep18: Well I've started to see some oil leaking from the valve covers so if you are in the market for new covers you may want to hold off for a bit until I have time to take mine off again. I plan to investigate to see if it is the cover or the gaskets. I think that the gasket has caused the leak but I am not positive at this point. I hope to have them fixed by next weekend and I will report back with my findings.
    This is part 1 of a 2-part series on replacing the ignition coils and valve/rocker cover on a VQ35DE engine. This engine is fitted to a number of Infiniti and Nissan vehicles as I've listed below. How do know if you need to replace your rocker cover gaskets? Easy, there will either be oil leaking around the gasket surface to the outside which will eventually find its way to your driveway or garage floor, or there will be oil pooling in one or more of your spark plug wells. In my case the oil was found in the #2 and #3 spark plug wells. Because the coil pack boots were impregnated with oil for several thousand miles I chose to replace them... all of them. It may not have been needed but they cost around a 100$ for a set of six off Amazon (link below) and I figured it was good insurance. Now I have 4 back-up coil packs in my parts bin.
    Parts Needed:
    Rocker Cover & Gaskets: a.co/h5LinIc
    (this version has the oil filler neck that sits up high as in the G35 and possibly other vehicles with the VQ35 engine - make sure you order the correct part for your application)
    Coil Packs: a.co/g9de7l7
    RTV Silicone: a.co/8yh00T3
    The VQ35DE is fitted to the following vehicles:
    North American
    2001-2004 Nissan Pathfinder- 240 hp (179 kW)

    Please subscribe to get a notification when part 2 (Installation) goes live. I'm currently in the editing process and I'll have it up in a few days. Also there will be a related video that will cover cleaning the intake plenum and installing a PCV breather oil catch can. Stay tuned for that in the days to come.

    JR, this video is great. How are the covers holding on? No leaks? Also, are the spark plugs seals rubber or hard plastic like the OEM?

    • @JRsGarage
      @JRsGarage  6 років тому

      They are doing well. I do have a small leak from the front left of the driver's side but I do not attribute it to the cover. I don't think I properly applied the RTV in the corner. Plug seals are much softer than the OEM they replaced.

    Nice video, but how did you get the passenger side cover off with the wiring harness in the way?
    I'm in the middle of doing this fix on my '06 G35 coupe (due to oil leaks on #4 & #5 plug tubes) and there's nowhere near enough slack/space for me to get the cover off even though I've disconnected all of the harness brackets. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @JRsGarage
      @JRsGarage  2 роки тому

      If I remember correctly I was able to move the harness out of the way enough to get the cover off. I believe the '06 engine has a different intake manifold so the wiring harness routing may be different and you may have to remove it or partly remove it.

    I am just curious why not remove the plenum first before the coil packs to give you more room?

    • @JRsGarage
      @JRsGarage  5 років тому +1

      I did the coil packs first to show the viewers that if you want to you can do that job without having to take off the plenum. But if you know you are going to also replace the valve covers, then removing the plenum first is definitely easier.

      I hesitate to link directly to the manual due to copyright infringement but if you type "infiniti g35 service manual" into google, the 3rd link that shows up for me is from "cardiagn.com" and that will take you to the pdf documents.

    Engine cover for the infinity mfx 35,was changed due to oiling engine, after putting new one ,and oil still coming out from the plugs,, and the new obtain there is no spring on seal , what is the problem , please enlightened me

    • @JRsGarage
      @JRsGarage  Рік тому

      I'm not sure what spring on the seal you are referring to. The spark plug holes should have rubber seals built into the new valve cover. Either it was installed incorrectly, it is defective or the surface was not cleaned properly prior to installing the new unit.

    I removed the 10 bolts and my valve cover is stuck. It seems everything is disconnected. Why is it stuck. Help

    • @JRsGarage
      @JRsGarage  5 років тому

      It could be that there was too much RTV used to seal it last time it was off or from the factory. Also the gaskets around the spark plug Wells may be tight. Lift straight up.

  • @ZekeMagnum
    @ZekeMagnum 6 років тому +1

    Hwo do I know if I need to replace the entire valve cover or just the gasket? I had oil inside the spark plug wells on like 3 or 4 out of 6 wells

    • @JRsGarage
      @JRsGarage  6 років тому +2

      If you have oil leaking into any of the spark plug wells you need to change the entire valve cover on that side. The gaskets for the spark plug wells are built into the cover. If you have oil only leaking on the exterior of the engine than you can get away with just changing out the edge gasket.

    • @ZekeMagnum

      What do you think the job at a mechanic would cost? In case I am not willing to spend a day or probably even 2 on the job myself?

    • @JRsGarage
      @JRsGarage  6 років тому

      I'm not sure but I would assume they would charge 4-5hrs for the job at $50-70 per hour for labor could cost you from $200 - $350. then you have to add the parts cost from the dealer which is much more than you can find on Amazon. But that's just a guess.

    • @ZekeMagnum
      @ZekeMagnum 6 років тому

      I called my local mechanic shop and they quoted me ish 1.000 euros incl part and labor. That is 300 euros per Valve cover with the gasket of course each, so 600 for parts and another 350-400 for labor. I am not replacing such a valuable and important part with some aftermarket copy, so for me it is worth paying 350 euros for someone else to do it than standing there for 1-2 days getting extremely frustrated and might break something

    Hi great video mate i wonder if you can help me please i am looking for valve covers ang gaskets for a nissan skyline 2001 engine model VQ30DD I HAVE TRIED LOOKING FOR THE PARTS BUT NOT HAVING ANY LUCK. THE CAR IS IN THE UK AND IT WAS IMPORTED FROM JAPAN 6 YEARS AGO. THANKS BRIAN

      You can find the gaskets and covers here: nissan.epc-data.com/skyline/hv35/6820-vq30dd/engine/111/ Looks like they may be quite expensive. You may want to go to the local Nissan dealer and see if they can get them for a better price. Also, there may be other Nissan engines that use the same valve covers that were sold in the UK, such as the VG30DE or VQ30DE. You can also try: www.nipponautospares.com/

    Bro how did you take off the hose that connects the two valve covers located in the front ?
    I cant take it off!!!!!

    • @JRsGarage
      @JRsGarage  4 роки тому

      Use some pliers to grab the rubber right where it overlaps the tube going into the valve cover. Don't squeeze too hard or you'll break it. Now twist the pliers so that you break the seal that's been formed by the rubber hose. After the seal is broken you should be able to pry it off with a flat head screwdriver.

    • @alecparkes5036

      sliding a pick up the hose should also break the seal

    What intake and tb is that?

    • @JRsGarage
      @JRsGarage  3 роки тому +1

      TB is stock. The intake tube is similar to this: www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Air-Intake-Hose-Pipe-Kit-Filter-for-Nissan-350Z-3-5L-V6-2003-2006/402561021147?fits=Model%3A350Z&hash=item5dba81b4db:g:4OgAAOSw89BfaFiY
      but mine didn't come with the filter and other bits, just the tube. I connected it between the MAF and TB to remove the oddly shaped stock one. Added a bit of intake noise but I like it. I covered it with thermal tape and there is a K&N filter in the stock air box.

    I trust that your knowledge is viable, so there’s a G35 Coupe for sale locally for 3250. The only thing wrong with the car is that it needs a new valve cover gasket and a new AC compressor. The owner already has a new compressor and just hasn’t installed it. Given all of these factors, I need a reliable car that will make a 512 miles trip about 4 times a year (#College Lyfe). Is this a good investment?
    Edit: the car has 137k miles

    • @JRsGarage
      @JRsGarage  6 років тому +1

      I'd say that's a pretty good price and fairly low to normal mileage depending on the year (03-05). My 03 has about 15k less miles and I would trust it to drive cross country and back. Any service records available? Take it to a garage and spend ~50 bucks to get a pre-purchase inspection. If the owner won't let you do that he's probably hiding something.

  • @TheRebuilt1

    • @hiddenkard3101

      No. valve covers are cheap. Gaskets are even cheaper. Got mine for 20. Btw G35 aren't 900 bucks. That's the price of wheels and tires or a used engine.
