  • Robert and Dean DeLeo from Stone Temple Pilots stopped by The Kevin & Bean Show this morning to talk about their search for a new singer for the band, Scott Weiland’s passing, and more. It’s a legacy they hope to continue since the passing of Scott Weiland and former vocalist Chester Bennington‘s inability to continue on with the band due to time commitments.

I like how Dean says his brother is one of the best bass players = because he is. He accents the songs so perfectly with his bass and doesn't over due it.

I read Scott Weiland's Not Dead and Not for Sale book and let me tell you something : just looking at the photos on the book, it hurts to see his physical deterioration through the years. And in the book, Scott exposes some life events that were just crazy - like in life threatening crazy.
Loved the guy as a singer, yet going on the road with him - that must have been a real challenge.

+Joe Medium I was thinking the same thing. I think Dean was going to break into tears. You can tell his heart was ripped out. He had to change the subject because he was on the verge of breaking down. I can only imagine how they felt the day they broke it off with Scott and then the how they felt the day they found out he was dead. At this point, I wish they would just hang up STP and let us remember the (good) past. This is coming from a guy who was 11 year old kid sitting in his room, glued to Core the week it came out.

You heard it right from their mouths; they want to continue making music under the STP name. Will it be the same without Scott? No. But you look at bands like Queen, AC/DC, Def Leppard and the Scorpions, all of whom have been through several line-up changes and are still making music and all of a sudden, STP marching on without Scott doesn't really look so bad.

IamLiterallyRetarded Alice in Chains is still good because they still have Jerry Cantrell. He was and is the engine and brains behind the sound. I think Jerry, Sean and Mike made a good decision with Duvall. They didn't go with a sound-alike but instead went with someone who could be an asset as a guitarist and songwriter.

Scott was very expressive!! especially in the Plush song video(what is he trying to express or say to the public?) Looks like anger or frustration at something or someone in his life that he could not manage on his own & should of gotten help for himself with the drug addiction that took him away at a young age. Another great one gone too soon because of drugs!! LONG LIVE STP!!

Aside from Queen, you guys are my all-time favorite band. But Scott wrote every lyric to every song on every STP album (before Chester). As much as I ADORE you guys, I just don't think I could bear to hear some random dude singing Atlanta, Piece of Pie, Big Bang Baby & all the others. Those songs just make me feel so much. I've lost all my favorites except for Chris Cornell. Shit, I'm STILL crying about Prince & Scott.

If Robert Dean and Eric ever see this, you really ought to make a video like Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum did with Velvet Revolver. I would totally apply if I had experience with a band of anywhere NEAR this caliber. But I assume I'm not alone in finding the VR process fascinating. I would be SO interested in seeing the videos and their process in this. You guys could totally market it, too. Don't settle for anything but the best, you guys are my faith in coming music. I love Scott's music but I *greatly* look forward to hear what's next for STP.

I dont know how all this is working out for the efforts put in to locate and select a vocalist/band member for the STP guys to work with as it stands today.
I loved Scott and saw him in one of his last days,....the performance one that pure last second chance and fate drew me to.
It was surreal as it opened up and concluded,...oh so quickly and such a memorable treat.
Little did I know but the feeling that hit me when he walked out onto that stage in NJ would indeed come back to haunt me when I heard the heart wrenching news of his untimely demise.
So much of what I saw, heard, and felt as it pertained to what wound up happening all clicked into perfect alignment in making sense,...if one could call it that.
Far be it from me to apply my ability of singing along with Scott that night from the front of the stage area to fill the role,...but something equally strange and "meant to be seen" happened just before the close of this open audition STP had called for.
The same person I was at the Wildabouts show with had been dining with me at a restaurant lounge in the greater Philadelphia area one nite about a month ago.
Were sitting there enjoying our moments, and then unusual for this place,....an entertainer starts up with some singer songwriter type tunes and begins to completely draw my attention away from eating. (nearly impossible)
I stopped eating and was just riveted at not just what I heard ,....but what I felt, more accurately KNEW,..like something that you werent supposed to know by never having seen it but by an overwhelming intuition.
I watched the guy perform,...there was a break,...I kept eating, he came back out, played a few more tunes, and finally I said to my dining companion,....wait here.
I gotta go say something to this guy.
I stood up, and in front of everyone watching,...( I was so choked up,...i could barely speak,..I was starting to cry,..but I needed to do this,...)
I go up to him right before he sets his guitar down for a break,....I look him right in the eyes, barely able to muster the words, and say to him: "play Plush".
Without any hesitation,...and I never met him before,...I dont know the dude,...he fucking KILLS that tune.
I KNEW it,...I had the very strong feeling that this guy could easily walk into that audition.
I explained to him why I approached,...what i thought, why I thought that,..and started to go on about there was this STP audition and its closed by now but YOU,..YOU ARE THE GUY.
I start insisting he needs to understand its not just what he played,..but that i knew he could do it, and that there was something at play, something that brought me there like the night i saw Scott play his next to last gig,.....I dont know why these things happen,... I dont fight it,..I just go along for the ride.
I tell him Im going to do everything I can to let the STP people know about him. I dont know them or know how,..but Im gonna try.
Well, as it turns out,...he tells me he DID IN FACT try out with a taped entry,....so, he got it in before the deadline.
The only thing is even though he handed it in well before he met me,....the STP people had mentioned somwhere they were down to the final few choices.
    They hadnt contacted him though.
It didnt phase me because I said thats good because I think once they pick the person,...something wont click as they get into it,...this isnt over.
Im telling you,...you are the guy.
If they dont wind up with you,...its everyones loss.
So,....I went home and for a few days tried to contact STP`s PR lady,...STP`s management,...all via email,....no answers or reply.
I gave my home phone, cell, email,...I have no horse in this race,..Im just some guy trying to tie the sneaker laces here.
All I felt they needed to do was to SEE HIM IN PERSON.
The thing he does wont come across on a home-made tape.
I wanted them to send one of their people to see this guy play at one gig,...Im sure they would see why.
Out of my pocket,...I would have paid to fly this kid out to Cali if need be,...Never met him,...dont want anything...just wanted them to see what I saw,...to see what he does....He writes, produces his material, has a CD, has the looks, and is available.
So,...there is someone out there,..I wont say his name on their social media or here,...but he is lost in the shuffle.
Sometimes,...we insulate ourselves to a degree we limit what can ever be.........I still think hes the guy.

I got their album Purple somehow when I was a teenager and going through some rough shit but man, I never took that thing out of the CD player. I remember busting the wind shield out of my car by punching it and meatplow was jamming loudly lol
The girl I was with at the time was terrible and I despise her now! She also got fat and ugly which is fitting since it matches her soul. 😂
Hard but also good times. I’ve loved stp ever since tho. It’s crazy how amazing Scott was even dealing with his terrible drug and other problems he still shined that bright. But yea, everybody in the band was impressive to me.
I think their new singer is doing well but there is no replacing Scott. He was damaged and that’s why he was so good. RIP I was really sad when he passed.

Maybe they want to explore what this band sounds like with a little Funk synthesizer or or organ. I love the opening jam on Tiny Music From The Vatican Gift Shop the synthesizer and Roberts bass funk. Dean is a badass guitarist they don't really need another guitarist but a dedicated eccentric poet Morrison or Scott without the excessive substances. It's about the music man painting the air with sound like Picasso or Dali or James Brown or Mick Jagger.

There is a band called Shinedown Smith & Myers who did an amazing tribute. The lead singer gave something extra special, they should contact him.

Scott's drugs over-took his mind and this is why he ruined a great relationship with his band and his family. The guy was a smokin' entertainer when he was in the right frame of mind, but when he was on drugs, he developed a serious attitude problem and a negativity problem that ultimately ended his life. It's a real shame and I know why Dean and Rob continue on the legacy of STP. Cheers Dean, Robert and Eric, you guys deserve the best. Make sure you play "And So I know" with your new lead singer.

Yea, it's not like Nirvana where Kurt literally wrote everything. The DeLeo brothers & Erik come up with the music. Scott was an amazing singer/frontman/lyricist but STP is the sum of it's parts, it was never just Scott as the sole creative output. It's like when AIC fans get mad cause the band continued without Layne. These people want to make music and perform for their fans, there's nothing wrong with that. I can't imagine what it was like for them to be as successful as they are and to watch their friend and bandmate just spiral. On a side note, the newest STP album is really good, listened to a few tracks last night and was really enjoying it. Hope to catch them live someday.

They need a poet, a charasmatic baritone low tenor if he smokes a little weed and drinks a little it's okay....nothing more. A singer rooted in R & B Plant, Cornell, Vedder, Morrison, Bowie a howler a moaner a groaner, maybe plays a little rhythm guitar maybe a little blues harmonica an eccentric flashy playboy who's not sold on the hype. Who just loves music and wants to push the envelope but also knows how to pull back. A Lover.

I realize some think STP should die w/Scott. I don't think Scott would agree, and the DeLeo brothers certainly don't. I don't know who they've got now, if anyone, but Dean, Eric and Robert obviously have a lot of stuff still in them. And I'd love to hear more. Will STP be the same without Scott? No way. But the 3 surviving members were more than just the band behind Scott Weiland.

STP was a well-oiled rock machine and at the top of the heap in 94-96, there has been nothing even close to this high quality of musicianship and writing in the last 25 years. All we consistently have now is a surplus of crap flooding the airwaves as present-day so-called musicians flush the music business further and further down into the rockstar wanna be shitter, not to mention talentless RAP which is another disturbing subject all in itself.
