The dude plays guitar, bass, piano, and who knows what other instruments he knows, he is also a fairly good singer. Now I discover he's an awesome public speaker. Robert is god-like!
“So I was fuckin’ around with some chicken-pickin’ and ragtime, and came up with Plush, then laid down a badass bassline over top of that.” “I was just playing some bossanova and blues licks, and came up with Interstate Love Song, then wrote one of the most memorable bass parts of the 90s over top of that.” We get it, Robert. You’re really fucking good. Seriously though, loved every second of this and listening to him talk about his process and inspirations.
such an incredibly underrated bassist, songwriter, vocalist and musician in general - I always loved his backup vocals to Scott and he absolutely crushes basslines like Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart. I just always loved his feel and dynamics
WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW. First, I can't believe no comments thus far. Unless for some reason they are blocked, I hope to express some thoughts maybe others would say as well. First, Thanks to Robert for doing this event. 2nd, thanks to STP Legacy for posting this here, I have to say, Robert is my favorite bass player but hearing him play guitar, explain his song writing and even his family times is so cool to hear. What an even cooler friggin dude you are than I already thought you were, Robert.
Thank you again for posting this video. Having already been a big Robert fan, he has even cranked it up higher in my book after this down to earth display of his influences and skills.
I've lost count of how many times I've seen this interview...but each time I rediscover and reconfirm how great it is to listen to him. Typical of a great person, being so humble, I marvel every time at his way of explaining and communicating so much art that he carries inside.... love him ❤🎼🙏
Robert de leo i remember back in the 90s has so much personality and individuality. While the rest of the band look like rockers being in a rock band, robert look like a jazz player from the 1940s. His groove on stp's sound is very evident
I have watched this 6+ times easily, such a great humble and mind opening interview of the song writing approach. I wish more artists would do something like this, thanks Rob!
I would really love to see him do a demonstration for their song "Big Empty" Absolutely insane bass lines on that track. Robert's playing is pure genius.
I am 60 years old, with that being said, I can enjoy and appreciate his influences of past music and how he re-interpreted the sounds of the past music Into great hits! Robert is humble enough to appreciate music as a whole, just a flat genius!!! Thank you Robert!
Dean was so incredibly lucky to have a collaborator such as ROBERT DELEO♪♫ such a great Guitarist songwriter, and awesome bass player! They both worked so well together, plus all in STP
11:07 As a bass player first, this is very related to where I am currently in my music journey…Loved STP for a long time, now I really know the main reason why…New perspective…Thanks to this video…Will continue watching now…
He is such a cool guy and incredible bass player. That bass line on tripping on a hole in a paper heart is so hard to play with your fingers like that.
Love you Robert! Thx for sharing this video, I truly enjoyed it. The acoustic sessions and interviews are some of my favorites. You all have given us true gifts and memories over the years. Glad to see the legacy carried thru into the 2020's.
MY BELOVED WONDERFUL DELEO BROTHER 💘💘💘 How I'd like to meet him!!!! Thank you very much for this amazing gift 😄 I'll watch it on the next Friday. I was born on the third of May. This birthday will be MAGICAL, with my SPECIAL ONE 🌌
I didn't resist 😜 I watched it this afternoon and ammire MY GEORGEOUS IDOL with an INFINITE JOY and a CHILLING and an ECSTATIC PLEASURE 😋💓 WHAT A SUPERBE BIRTHDAY'S EVE 🎆🎉
Dude is slick, that’s for sure. Not being a core bassist, he really dug in and found the “essence” of what the bass is about, and oddly enough became a “quintessential bassman” and his bass is the engine that drove STP! The man is a grove master, with a super cool style.
Our bass player is from Jersey too. He practices bass at home by playing along to Rush. ..and he's always playing us stuff from his phone into the mic at rehearsal. Lol ( 28:50 )
Awesome video, love learning where the songs originated from. That being said, the action on that custom bass needs some serious adjustment. Way too much fret buzz.
I'm not so sure that it's fret buzz. Could just be a gain/EQ thing - especially since the buzz totally goes away when he changes to darker tone settings and/or a lighter touch. ..and increases when he's really digging in. If it were fret buzz, it would buzz no matter what. Rob is one of those players who uses a very bright, punchy, and slightly gritty tone. He also really digs in, so sometimes you can hear the string pop against the pole piece on that split P-style pickup. I've heard a lot of bass players sound like that on their own during soundcheck. But then as soon as the rest of the band is playing with them, the bass tone is absolutely killer. His bass would have to be in really, really, really bad shape to have THAT much fret buzz. ...and there's no way his tech (and builder of that bass) would have let him go onstage like that. For that much fret buzz, you'd either have a warped neck, multiple frets backing out of the board or a tech who literally doesn't know how to do a basic action adjustment. To me, it sounds more like brand new strings, a heavy right hand, and some gain on the high end. That's just his sound. It's why his bass has always cut through so well on STP records. You'll hear that fret buzz sound on their master tapes if you find some of his isolated tracks. I know that at very least, iso tracks for "Vaseline" are available online.
He used to work at Schecter, I believe, so I think it’s probably something else causing the buzz. He knows how to setup a bass. I know what you mean though because it is really buzzy for “Plush”.
He is the John Paul Jones of our generation. Superb player and writer.
Not just a genius bass player. A genius musician. And a decent human being.
Well said!
Absolutely!
That’s the truth
One of the best rock bassists to ever play. Robert doesn't get nearly enough credit and it's a shame. This guy is an amazing player
Without Robert Deleo, there would never have been STP
It was Robert's songwriting and his love of Ragtime that made those songs sound so great and made them stand apart.

Robert makes magic with bossa nova and apply to stp

AGREE!!!

Excellent presentation. He's not only a great player but a good speaker as well.
Funny how many of those riffs have become radio staples 20+ years on.

The goat!!!!!
What a class act this man is
A great musician right there folks
He is a great musician and above all, polite and handsome. STP's songs have a lot of Robert's contribution.
Dean was so incredibly lucky to have a collaborator such as ROBERT DELEO♪♫ such a great Guitarist songwriter, and awesome bass player! They both worked so well together, plus all in STP
They were both lucky to have each other as brothers, first and foremost above everything
"And so I just..." >
One of my favorite bass players and musicians

One of the best to ever do it!
Robert and dean are such kind guys!
The intro and the verse for Sour Girl is some of his best work imo

That acoustic sounds great!
That was so good!
What a cool guy.
I loved the video!
Bravo for the guy passing the mic to the audience!
I didn't resist 😜

WHAT A SUPERBE BIRTHDAY'S EVE 🎆🎉
wut?
That's gold!

No doubt
LOVE this!

I liked to play my phone through my pickups sometimes, cause my phone's speaker was way too quiet for everyone else to hear.
I really enjoyed this! Thank you Robert!
Rock God
Loved it.
Love this guy
How can he play a whole show plucking these strings like a mad man??
That wee bit at the end DOES make sense Robert..While you're still above that pinball hole..play while you can still play ;)
This guy is humble AF
Robert was and is the best bassist since the likes of John Paul Jones, John Endtwistle, Bill Wyatt etc...
We wanna hear the Romantics😂😂
Traduce lo por favor
So he created one of their most well known guitar riffs?
He created most of their well known guitar riffs. Robert wrote probably 70-80% of their music.
Subtitulada?
Yes
