      1) most people, relative to the amount of scientific knowledge available at the time, are superbly dumb and ignorant. 2) low iq. Humor and opinions. 3) clearly most people are not intelligent enough to become an addict then bounce back and reflect on it, let alone do actual research on what was going on. Lastly, attic room may not be a “disease” but it’s absolutely something. It changes everything and hijacks your person.

I wish I could meet with every billionaire and seduce them to the point where they will let me stick a needle with cocaine or heroin in their arm just a couple times and then they could spend their life saying that addiction is a choice. Until you are dependent on something or live with someone who has it, normies won't understand.

Scott Weiland was a brilliant and talented musician however the way he carried himself and spoke when he was clean was extraordinary. He was living proof that addiction was a disease, he wholeheartedly knew and believed what would happen if he started using again but yet he did over and over he started and stopped. Unfortunately he was able to fight the demons and was taken way to early. I just pray his son stays clean now and is able to keep those demons at bay.

Yeah I hear you the Dual diagnosis makes it very difficult especially the stigma attached to mental illness but about 15 yrs ago when I was in detox program (the worst I relapsed 2 days after I got out) I heard that they recently labeled drug addiction as a mental illness along with bi polar but I think the Bi polar label is a blanket term a long time ago it was called manic depression and it meant extreme highs and lows now it's just Bi polar disorder applied to anyone for whatever reason

Anyone that hasn't been in the deepest throws of addiction will NEVER understand the uncontrolable insanity. The insanity where a mother that clean and sober would die for their child but in the grasp of addiction would feed their fix before their baby, or stare harm to self or incarsaration and still do whatever it takes to get their drug or alcohol of choice. It takes a life long commitment once self admitting to ones self they are helpless to drugs/alcohol and changing people places, and things in theirs lifes, never becoming complacent because an addicts brain will lie, cheat and steal your life from you

I was sexually harassed. It was actually borderline sexual assault. I worked in a clinic. And one day out of the blue, the director smacked my ass and then made inappropriate comments saying “You’re butt sits up really high, I didn’t realize you were so tight. I meant to smack you on the back”. And did it in front of our co workers to. BRAZEN AND HORRIBLE. People, I’m completely with Scott here, because it was a woman. Not a man. And she was an out lesbian. In a relationship with one of the clinic’s nurses. And she sexually harassed me. And I did leave my job. But not for her. I ended up TAKING her job. Then went to work in state government. So there’s more than one way to get justice 🤣 Scott was so intelligent and very open about himself. He was brave. And a lyrical genius with a voice of such beauty of the likes not heard since Jim Morrison. He tried so hard to get through to them about the mind and perspective of an addict and what it was like on that side of the coin. None so deaf as those who refuse to hear. Of course we know now that addiction is a disease. And they have isolated the genomes that addicts have that are different from those that are not predisposed to addiction. Which is why one person can drink and not become an alcoholic and another person can have a drink and they are an alcoholic from moment on. Whether they get sober or not. Bill Mahr and Gurley Brown look and sound really stupid here knowing what we know now. Also, it’s the very thinking that I don’t need any help to get sober because it’s simply willpower that will save me is exactly how people never get passed their addictions and actually get sober!!! It’s that thinking that kills people!! Idiots.

  • @wickfields

Here is America’s problem now played out 19 years ago. A comedian and an author think their opinion on addiction is equivalent to that of an addictionologist, who’s spent thousands upon thousands of hours studying the disease, and an actual addict with all of his experience in that disease. Conjecture is not the colleague of expertise.

I have a really easy way to help people understand addiction. See how long you can go without any one of these things: food, hydration, using the bathroom, sleeping, breathing. And if you struggle to go without it or you give in, have your friends and family berate you and ask why you’re so weak. That’s what it feels like. That’s what Drew meant when he was talking about survival. It feels the same as a craving for water when you’re dehydrated. Like you’ll die without it. Not drinking water is a choice, in theory. But after long enough, if the water exists anywhere near you, your brain will force your body to consume it.
Yeah, it’s a choice whether you sip alcohol ever in your life. Sure. But most people who judge addicts have not avoided alcohol for their entire lives or at least know and respect people in their lives who have tried alcohol. The judgement needs to stop.
