You have to react to tiara andini "ngeluwihi, flip it up and janji setia"
The guy at the end was Leif, he's still looking for Thorfinn
Aaaaah I knew it! But couldn't remember the name! I was thinking about it afterwards 😂
The roman influence is that wales was the only surviving remnant of the roman britannia.
🤔
the interaction between Askeladd and the guy in the rowboat at the beginning of this episode is actually pretty interesting once you know a thing or two. for now, I'd summarize it as like... the guy knows he's not being hired to ferry all of Askeladd's men over the river (he says "I wonder how many days it'd take to get you all across" like he's not about to find out) but when Askeladd mentions his title, and who the letter is for, the ferryman demands no payment. he also notices that Askeladd speaks good English, but in an accent similar to that of the man's own home country. and his eyes linger on Askeladd's armor... which feels significant because we haven't really seen anyone else wear that style of armor throughout this whole show.
also, another comment already mentioned this, but Thorkell's deal with Thorfinn in the forest was that their group could have Canute, but Thorkell would be pursuing them. if they could keep Canute away from him, or at least give him a proper chase, then Thorkell would provide more information about Thors. basically Thorkell is treating this like a game. he's like a large energetic dog that got left alone in the house for too long and started destroying the furniture. Thorkell is the poster boy for "needs more enrichment in his enclosure."
also, Thorfinn is so grumpy and belligerent at this point, I love him, he's just this awful little ball of anger. he's my boy with behavioral issues. he really is like John Wick, if John Wick was a surly teenager surrounded by adults with other shit to worry about at the moment.
the conversation between the priest and Askeladd's men is probably the most important part of this episode. when the priest says "love" that's probably a poor way of translating what he's saying. he's most likely talking about "agape" which is described as the fatherly love of god for humans, as well as the reciprocal love of humans for god. but the actual traits that make this love distinct from other types we may think of, is that it is a selfless and unconditional care for others. and it's something that warrants the type of thought the priest is giving to it, because the word "unconditional" really does carry a lot of weight. regardless of crimes, regardless of appearance, regardless of wealth or status... there is no condition that would exempt a person from this kind of love.
it's almost to the point of being nonsensical to a person who is trying to functionally live in a world like this. that's probably why this type of love is ascribed to god... because god isn't here on earth. and of course Askeladd's men wouldn't understand this sort of thing. the way they think is very material, and their worldview is largely centered on themselves. it's not really uncommon to think of things in this way. but this does lend significance to what the priest is pursuing. it is difficult to describe, much less embody.
also 24:06 this scene means so much on a rewatch. I'm trying to figure out what I can say about it at this point. I guess what I will say, is that there's significance to Askeladd's memory flashing to Thors, and that line, "the more you fall for a man, the less things go how you want." and that's his justification for thinking that Canute might be able to become something someday.
oh, and Askeladd asks Gratianus "do you believe in the legend? the legend that Artorius will return from Avalon to the west, and restore the Britannia of old." just... put a pin in this. remember it was said.
in the end of the episode, because this is episode 12, we basically get a few shots that act as a sort of roundup of all the major players and where they're at. we get Thorkell, anticipating continuing to chase them, we have king Sweyn, aka Canute's father and the one who commands the Jomsviking, and we get to peek in on where Leif is... he's still looking for Thorfinn, like he promised. and he's checking the slave market, because selling the young men into slavery was the plan if Askeladd had captured the rest of the crew when he encountered Thors. so that's basically his best guess as to what happened to the kid. also, it's kind of a neat detail that Thorfinn is hyper vigilant to archers up on the hills... considering how all this began.
I can't wait for next episode... things are about to get _interesting._
I can always find you here, well I love reading these
@@shockhorn81 thanks for finding me, and reading my long posts! 😁
👀👀👀👀
Just an FYI we use the word "Love" to mean a lot of things interchangeable in the modern day but back then there were a lot more words to discover very different things we call "Love" the concept of love spread around by Christians was a relatively novel concept, they'll go more into it in future episodes.
Leif thought he saw Thorfin
Ah that was Leif!
You misremembering what Thorkell said, they were heading to the same place in pursuit of Canute Thorkell was saying that if Thorfin can win his challenge of successfully evading Thorkell and his Men until they get to camp he'll reward him with more info on his Father.
Ah of course!
Just a minor correction. Lief is NOT a Viking. He's explorer/trader/merchant. So he's not a fighter or pillager
or a rappist
Ah okay!
Thorfinn sniffing out the ambush like " *wait a minute i've been f-ed like this before* " ... remember when ? 😅
"random guy in a boat" lmao. That's Leif Eriksson all right
The goat
Adding some missed points that might be very light spoilers but are all shown or implied in this episode:
1. The Welsh look Roman because they are saying they are descended from Brittania, the Roman kingdom established on the British Isles, while the English are mainly descendants of Saxons that conquered that land from Brittania.
2. The ferryman is from Wales across the river, and says Askeladd speaks good English for a Dane, but has an accent from his country, implying that Askeladd would be originally Welsh.
3. When Askeladd refers to the legend of Artorius near the end and it shows the sword in the stone, this is implied to be the legend of King Arthur. Artorius was mentioned in previous episodes in a different context.
4. The man at the end is Leif Ericson from the early episodes, and that slave does look like Thorfinn, because Leif has been searching for Thorfinn to bring him home, like he promised his father before he died. Also Leif is not a Viking, but a merchant and explorer.
The guy from the boat, is Leif Ericson, who was looking at the Thorfinn lookalike
Of course!!!!! 🤯🤯
Although they are using the Japanese word "ai", which does mean love, a better translation might have been "grace", showing that the priest is talking about the kind of divine love central to Christianity.
Luke's top 3 anime will be Attack on Titan, Hunter x Hunter, and Vinland Saga. Calling it now!
I still think he’s going to love bleach when he sees it
Depends on how well they'll adapt Re:Zero S3 imo
Thats just the correct top 3.
👀👀👀
LET'S GOOOO! WE'RE FINALLY HALFWAY DONE WITH SEASON 1 & I CAN'T WAIT FOR U TO CHECKOUT THE REMAINING HALF (specially the last episode of course) 💪🏼
But am wayyy more excited about SEASON 2, You're in for some Brilliant Character Drama 🛐
I’m so excited for season 2 reaction aswell!
As a history buff who loves ancient history and everything roman, seeing the bireme and the roman armor was a complete nerdgasm moment
I think Luke missed the part where the narrator was explaining that the descendants of Rome live in Wales. That's why they look like Roman's. 👍
12:00 "Technically. Legendary Swedish Viking King Bjorn Ironside heard of Rome, and wanted to seize it’s riches. So he and a fellow Viking named Hastein, planned the invasion, which was much like the plan that the Spartans had in the Trojan war. So Bjorn and Hastein led a raiding party, occasionally stopping along the way at other cities asking for directions to Rome. When Bjorn and his band of berserkers reached Italy, they found the ancient city of Luna, which was fortified like Rome".
One of my favourite people on UA-cam is back with Vinland Saga!! Love you man
❤️❤️
It is him from ages ago. He is just older. Lief
Episode 12!!! Halfway through season 1.....can't wait to see your reactions to the masterpiece of a finale🔥🔥🔥
5:37 Year 1013 lasts for previous 3 or 4 episodes.
20:22 You might regret those words.
23:10 Its real. Only religions had word love and it was mostly reserved for worshiping God. Relationship love between couples developed in like 12th or 13th century France. Troubadours of Provence.
27:45 Not recognizing Leif. Bad Luke. At least he didn't say something like ''Is that Thorfinn's sister?''. 28:50 There is hope for Luke!!!
only 12th century?
pretty sure it existed in atleast 5th century
@@RenderingUser
What was happening in 5th century that had connection with love? I mentioned troubadours as somebody who promoted romantic love in 12th century.
@@matijamaksan4344 I'm pretty sure there's decent understanding of love dude to religion. Even for people.
They are dressed like romans. But tell me when did you notice that Askeladd has been wearing same type of armour this whole time?
You are right, it is true that the attire of Gratianus is wrong. That is the Hollywood rendering of a first century parade armor of a Roman officer, not the armor of a XI century Welsh warrior. Although it is true that the lords of Wales claimed that their power came from the Roman usurper Magnus Maximus, those claims were unsubstantiated and, more important, the Roman material culture disappeared from Wales during the V century. Welsh warriors were different from Gratianus. Even the name Gratianus is in Latin, instead of being in Cymru, the Celtic language of Wales, as the names recorded in the historical documents.
Take that as a liberty taken by the author of the manga, loosely based on the historical claims made by Welsh lords. By the way, have you noticed that Askeladd has a Roman cuirass too?
That said, it is not true that at the start of the XI century Rome (in the sense of the Roman empire) was long gone. What was gone was the Western part of the empire, but the Eastern part fared quite well at the time of this story thanks to emperor Basil II. Of course, the capital city was not Rome, but New Rome (Nova Roma), also known as Constantinople, or Miklagard in Old Norse.
yeah the random guy on the boat, yeah very good
Ragnar is the type of man which goes by car to gym for a 5 min walk and to shopping too (but not for grocery):))
Leif is back! Sad he did not find Thorfinn. That was a very good ending and I want the next episode now:) Welsh people traitors... And very shady Askeladd...
Love your opinion of canute at this point. I had the same opinion at my first watching of this show. I wonder whether he's going to get any character development though...🤔
Evil vikings of Wales? Yes, it checks.
All I can say is that Canute has so much in store for you...
There is no unified Scandinavia until 300 years in the future from storys point so no Canute was not it :D
Such a vibe to watch you
13:30 subber was spoilering, he says Thorfinn and askellad but taking askellad as a sidequest.
I've said this before, but if your forgetting things like major characters/plotlines and names (names are more understandable though tbf lol) then nobodies gunna blame you if you cut back on the amount of shows your watching at the same time, but also again, I understand its your livelihood and a mans gotta grind. its just unfortunate that so many things slip by, or a big reveal gets met with a "huh?".
NEW EPISODE HOORAYYY!
That's not the random guy, it's Leif!!
that king arthur reference tho....
Y'know, I bet Luke would really like Monster.
26:29 you’ll definitely see him develop
That "khmm", was there more epic way to end this episode?)
Season 2 make vinland enter my second anime betwern my favorties shows
The word the priest uses for love is supposed to be related to religious worship, not simple and plain love which is why Askeladd's men don't recognise it, it's not that they literally don't know what love is they just aren't used to the term the priest uses to talk about it. The oldest Norse translation of the Bible was on the 13th century (at least that I was able to look up) so that may play a part on it.
RAID REDEMPTION, if you like non stop action with minimal plot.
though the main character has a thing for legs. dude just hates kneecaps.
when is Vinland saga, all op and ending reaction
The reason Canute is the way he is is implied to be because Ragnar has been overprotective in his upbringing.
Rewatching this reminded me of how well built the characters are due to the change that Thorfinn and Canute had. I can't wait for Luke to see that.
first!
Askeladd is originally welsh. And Wales was the last bastion of Roman culture in the British Isles (at least they claimed so), after Saxons conquered Britain
That's still to be revealed in the coming episodes.
Spoiler.
Please edit or delete the first part
Do you mind editing? At this point that is only lightly implied.
